We apply the Kalman Filter to the analysis of multi-unit variance components models where each unit's response profile follows a state space model. We use mixed model results to obtain estimates of unit-specific random effects, state disturbance terms and residual noise terms. We use the signal extraction approach to smooth individual profiles. We show how to utilize the Kalman Filter to efficiently compute the restricted loglikelihood of the model. For the important special case where each unit's response profile follows a continuous structural time series model with known transition matrix we derive an EM algorithm for the restricted maximum likelihood (REML) estimation of the variance components. We present details for the case where individual profiles are modeled as local polynomial trends or polynomial smoothing splines.  相似文献

We present a simple proof of the resolvent estimates of elliptic Fourier multipliers on the Euclidean space, and apply them to the analysis of time-global and spatially-local smoothing estimates of a class of dispersive equations. For this purpose we study in detail the properties of the restriction of Fourier transform on the unit cotangent sphere associated with the symbols of multipliers. In this article we study global-in-time Strichartz estimates for the Schrödinger evolution corresponding to long-range perturbations of the Euclidean Laplacian. This is a natural continuation of a recent article [D. Tataru, Parametrices and dispersive estimates for Schrödinger operators with variable coefficients, Amer. J. Math. 130 (2008) 571-634] of the third author, where it is proved that local smoothing estimates imply Strichartz estimates. By [D. Tataru, Parametrices and dispersive estimates for Schrödinger operators with variable coefficients, Amer. J. Math. 130 (2008) 571-634] the local smoothing estimates are known to hold for small perturbations of the Laplacian. Here we consider the case of large perturbations in three increasingly favorable scenarios: (i) without non-trapping assumptions we prove estimates outside a compact set modulo a lower order spatially localized error term, (ii) with non-trapping assumptions we prove global estimates modulo a lower order spatially localized error term, and (iii) for time independent operators with no resonance or eigenvalue at the bottom of the spectrum we prove global estimates for the projection onto the continuous spectrum.  相似文献

For complex linear homogeneous recursive sequences with constant coefficients we find a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of the limit of the ratio of consecutive terms. The result can be applied even if the characteristic polynomial has not necessarily roots with modulus pairwise distinct, as in the celebrated Poincaré’s theorem. In case of existence, we characterize the limit as a particular root of the characteristic polynomial, which depends on the initial conditions and that is not necessarily the unique root with maximum modulus and multiplicity. The result extends to a quite general context the way used to find the Golden mean as limit of ratio of consecutive terms of the classical Fibonacci sequence.  相似文献

We consider an initial-boundary value problem for a nonlinear equation of Sobolev type with variable coefficient multiplying the power-law nonlinearity. We obtain sufficient conditions for both time-global and time-local solvability. In the case of local (but not global) solvability, we find two-sided estimates for the lifespan of the solution in the form of quadrature formulas and indicate special cases in which a closed form of these estimates is possible.  相似文献

We consider a spatially extended reaction-diffusion-convection system with a marginally stable ground state and a spatially localized amplification. We are interested in solutions bifurcating from the spatially homogeneous ground state in the case when pairs of imaginary eigenvalues simultaneously cross the imaginary axis. For this system we prove the bifurcation of a family of invariant tori which may contain quasiperiodic solutions. There is a serious difficulty in obtaining this result, because the linearization at the ground state possesses an essential spectrum up to the imaginary axis for all values of the bifurcation parameter. To construct the invariant tori, we use their invariance under the flow which manifests in a condition in PDE form. The nonlinear terms of this resulting PDE exhibit a loss of regularity. Since the linear part of this PDE is not smoothing, an adaption of the hard implicit function theorem (or Nash-Moser scheme) and energy estimates will be used to prove our result.  相似文献

We find a lower bound for the entropy dissipation of the spatially homogeneous Landau equation with hard potentials in terms of the entropy itself. We deduce from this explicit estimates on the speed of convergence towards equilibrium for the solution of this equation. In the case of so-called overmaxwellian potentials, the convergence is exponential. We also compute a lower bound for the spectral gap of the associated linear operator in this setting.  相似文献

In nonmodular invariant theory of finite groups, the invariant ring is always a direct summand of the full polynomial ring. This is no longer generally true in modular invariant theory, but nevertheless interesting examples are known where this happens. We give useful characterisations of the direct summand property in terms of the image of a twisted transfer map. For example, for p-groups acting in characteristic p the direct summand property holds if and only if the image of the ordinary transfer is a principal ideal; and in that case the group is generated by transvections. We also extend some known results in the nonmodular case to where only the direct summand property is assumed, e.g., the invariant ring is always generated by its elements of degree at most the order of the group.  相似文献

We consider the third‐order Claerbout‐type wide‐angle parabolic equation (PE) of underwater acoustics in a cylindrically symmetric medium consisting of water over a soft bottom B of range‐dependent topography. There is strong indication that the initial‐boundary value problem for this equation with just a homogeneous Dirichlet boundary condition posed on B may not be well‐posed, for example when B is downsloping. We impose, in addition to the above, another homogeneous, second‐order boundary condition, derived by assuming that the standard (narrow‐angle) PE holds on B, and establish a priori H2 estimates for the solution of the resulting initial‐boundary value problem for any bottom topography. After a change of the depth variable that makes B horizontal, we discretize the transformed problem by a second‐order accurate finite difference scheme and show, in the case of upsloping and downsloping wedge‐type domains, that the new model gives stable and accurate results. We also present an alternative set of boundary conditions that make the problem exactly energy conserving; one of these conditions may be viewed as a generalization of the Abrahamsson–Kreiss boundary condition in the wide‐angle case. In this paper, we study the stability of symmetric collocation methods for boundary value problems using certain positive definite kernels. We derive lower bounds on the smallest eigenvalue of the associated collocation matrix in terms of the separation distance. Comparing these bounds to the well-known error estimates shows that another trade-off appears, which is significantly worse than the one known from classical interpolation. This paper deals with the critical case of the global smoothing estimates for the Schrödinger equation. Although such estimates fail for critical orders of weights and smoothing, it is shown that they are still valid if one works with operators with symbols vanishing on a certain set. The geometric meaning of this set is clarified in terms of the Hamiltonian flow of the Laplacian. The corresponding critical case of the limiting absorption principle for the resolvent is also established. Obtained results are extended to dispersive equations of Schrödinger type, to hyperbolic equations and to equations of other orders.  相似文献

LetK be a complete ultrametric field of characteristic zero whose corresponding residue field k is also of characteristic zero. We give lower and upper bounds for the size of linearization disks for power series over K near an indifferent fixed point. These estimates are maximal in the sense that there exist examples where these estimates give the exact size of the corresponding linearization disc. Similar estimates in the remaining cases, i.e. the cases in which K is either a p-adic field or a field of prime characteristic, were obtained in various papers on the p-adic case [5, 18, 35, 42] later generalized in [28, 30], and in [29, 31] concerning the prime characteristic case.  相似文献

Summary The finite element discretization of many elliptic boundary value problems leads to linear systems with positive definite and symmetric coefficient matrices. Many efficient preconditioners are known for these systems. We show that these preconditioning matrices can also be used for the linear systems arising from boundary value problems which are potentially indefinite due to lower order terms in the partial differential equation. Our main tool is a careful algebraic analysis of the condition numbers and the spectra of perturbed matrices which are preconditioned by the same matrices as in the unperturbed case.  相似文献

We study the persistence of quadratic estimates related to the Kato square root problem across a change of metric on smooth manifolds by defining a class of “rough” Riemannian-like metrics that are permitted to be of low regularity and degenerate on sets of measure zero. We also demonstrate how to transmit quadratic estimates between manifolds which are homeomorphic and locally bi-Lipschitz. As a consequence, we demonstrate the invariance of the Kato square root problem under Lipschitz transformations and obtain solutions to this problem on functions and forms on compact manifolds with a rough metric. Furthermore, we show that a lower bound on the injectivity radius is not a necessary condition to solve the Kato square root problem.  相似文献

The objective of this paper is to study a highly general model system of nonlinear equations that describe propagation of nerve impulses in a cell. We prove time-local existence of a classical solution, derive sufficient conditions for the existence of a time-global solution, and consider the question of eventual smoothing of discontinuous initial values. The large-time asymptotic expansion of the solutions of the Cauchy problem is constructed. In many cases known methods of detecting oscillations of arithmetic error terms involve certain smoothing pro‐cedures. Usually an application of the smoothing operator does not change significantly the order of magnitude of the error under consideration. This is so for instance in the case of the classical error terms known in the prime number theory. The main purpose of this paper is to show that the situation for primes is not general. Considering the error term in the asymptotic formula for the Euler totient function we show that just one application of an integral smoothing operator changes situation dramatically: the order of magnitude of drops from x to √x (© 2010 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Sufficient conditions on the kernel and the grandizer that ensure the boundedness of integral operators with homogeneous kernels in grand Lebesgue spaces on ? n as well as an upper bound for their norms are obtained. For some classes of grandizers, necessary conditions and lower bounds for the norm of these operators are also obtained. In the case of a radial kernel, stronger estimates are established in terms of one-dimensional grand norms of spherical means of the function. A sufficient condition for the boundedness of the operator with homogeneous kernel in classical Lebesgue spaces with arbitrary radial weight is obtained. As an application, boundedness in grand spaces of the one-dimensional operator of fractional Riemann–Liouville integration and of a multidimensional Hilbert-type operator is studied.  相似文献
