A review of the medical literature concerning the psychological, physical, and vocal effects of premenstrual syndrome reveals a wide range of significant effects for the female singer and a larger number of proposed treatments. A survey was conducted to evaluate the frequency and severity of 67 general physical and psychological symptoms and 20 vocal symptoms experienced by 104 female singers. The variables of age, menstrual history, voice type, and performing experience were examined. The average number of general symptoms was 33 and the average number of vocal symptoms three. The most frequently reported general symptom was abdominal bloating, while the most frequently reported vocal symptom was difficulty in singing high notes. The subjects reported that symptoms occurred with moderate regularity and severity. At age 35 symptoms decreased in number and severity.  相似文献

We have evaluated the relationship between voice change and premenstrual syndrome (PMS) by comparing acoustic measurements made during the follicular phase and the premenstrual phase. Twenty-eight women were followed for 2 months for this study. Each participant was asked to produce an /a/ sound for 5 seconds at the midfollicular phase of the menstrual cycle and then 2-3 days before menstruation. Each voice sample was stored and analyzed by the Dr. Speech Science program. The voice data collected from all subjects during the two phases were compared. After that, the subjects were divided into a PMS-positive and PMS-negative group according to the criteria cited in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV); the voice data from each group were compared separately between the two phases. There was no significant difference in the acoustic parameters between the two phases in all subjects (N = 28). In the PMS-positive group (N = 16), jitter was significantly increased during the premenstrual phase compared to the follicular phase (p = 0.048). The patient's PMS score was not correlated with the severity of voice change. We conclude that the change of voice parameter was objectively identified in the PMS-positive group, therefore more careful voice habituation is required during the premenstrual phase in that group.  相似文献

The purposes of this project were to discover (1) if the speaking fundamental frequency (SFF) levels of professional singers differ significantly from those of nonsingers and (2) if the age-related SFF patterns are similar for these two classes of individuals. Sixty professional singers and 94 nonsingers were recorded reading the first paragraph of the “Rainbow Passage;” both males and females were included. Three paired groups (young, middle, and old age) were studied; they were selected on the basis of health and age. The professional singer groups were further divided by a binary voice classification system, specifically that of soprano/alto for women and tenor/baritone for men. It was found that the sopranos and tenors exhibited significantly higher SFF levels then did the age-matched nonsingers, whereas the altos and baritones did not differ significantly from the controls. Relationships within the performer groups were mixed. For example, there appeared to be a systemic trend for the sopranos and tenors to exhibit higher SFF levels than the altos and baritones. Finally, although the nonsinger SFF levels varied significantly as a function of age, those for the professional singers did not.  相似文献

The purpose of the present study was to provide data on the intensitycharacteristics of young adult speakers in terms of conversational intensity level, conversational intensity range, and available intensity range. Subjects included 20 males and 20 females, ages 20–30 years. Each subject was asked to read the Rainbow Passage at a conversational intensity level, as softly as possible without whispering, and as loudly as possible, on 2 separate days 1 week apart. The second and third sentences of the three readings on both days were analyzed for various intensity parameters. Results revealed a conversational intensity level of 70.42 dB for males and 68.15 dB for females. When male and female intensity measures were compared, few statistically significant differences were found. Further, when intensity measures for the first and second readings were compared, few significant differences were found.  相似文献

SUMMARY: Acoustic pharyngometry evaluates the geometry of the vocal tract with acoustic reflections and provides information about vocal tract cross-sectional area and volume from lip to the glottis. Variations in vocal tract diameters are needed for speech scientists to validate various acoustic models and for medical professionals since the advent of endoscopic surgical techniques. Race is known to be one of the most important factors affecting the oral and nasal structures. This study compared vocal tract dimensions of White American, African American, and Chinese male and female speakers. One hundred and twenty healthy adult subjects with equal numbers of men and women were divided among three races. Subjects were controlled for age, gender, height, and weight. Six dimensional parameters of the speakers' vocal tract cavities were measured with acoustic reflection technology (AR). Significant gender and race main effects were found in certain vocal tract dimensions. The findings of this study now provide speech scientists, speech-language pathologists, and other health professionals with a new anatomical database of vocal tract variations for adult speakers from three different races.  相似文献

Including those patients that were the subject of our previous report in 1990 (1) a total of 52 patients with unilateral vocal fold paralysis have been managed by combined surgical medialization and nerve-muscle pedicle reinnervation. The technique has been modified only slightly since 1985, when the first such surgery was performed. Short- and long-term voice results determined by a panel of sophisticated listeners are reported, as well as details of patient selection and complications. Better functional results were noted than were observed with surgical medialization alone, and long-term deterioration of the voice improvement initially achieved was prevented with this technique.  相似文献

The aim of the study was to identify the acoustic correlates of female teachers' subjective voice complaints by recording their voices in their working environment. The subjects made recordings during lessons (N = 10) and breaks (N = 11). The subjects were divided into 2 groups: those with few voice complaints (FC group) and those with many voice complaints (MC group). The speech sample made in the breaks was maximally sustained /a/, from which fundamental frequency (F0), jitter, and shimmer were analyzed. The classroom samples were analyzed for F0, sound pressure level (SPL), and F0 time (the active vibration time of the vocal folds). Additionally, an index for assessing voice loading is presented. The results revealed a tendency of the MC group to have higher F0 and lower SPL and perturbation values than the FC group. The index values correlated moderately with the subjective vocal complaints.  相似文献

Acoustic measures provide an objective means to describe pathological voices and are a routine component of the clinical voice examination. Because the voice sample is obtained using a microphone, microphone characteristics have the potential to influence the values of parameters obtained from a voice sample. This project examined how the choice of microphone affects key voice parameters and investigated how one might compensate for such microphone effects through filtering or by including additional parameters in the decision process. A database of 53 normal voice samples and 100 pathological voice samples was used in four experiments conducted in an anechoic chamber using four different microphones. One omnidirectional microphone and three cardioid microphones were used in these experiments. The original voice samples were presented to each microphone through a speaker located in an anechoic chamber, and the output of each microphone sampled to computer disk. Each microphone modified the frequency spectrum of the voice signal; this, in turn, affected the values of the voice parameters obtained. These microphone effects reduced the accuracy with which acoustic measures of voice could be used to discriminate pathological from normal voices. Discrimination performance improved when the microphone output was filtered to compensate for microphone frequency response. Performance also improved when spectral moment coefficient parameters were added to the vocal function parameters already in use.  相似文献

Objective

Assessment of the voice-change progress of 20 girls (12–13 years) over 1 year by observing changes in speaking fundamental frequency (SFo), voice range, and register pitch breaks in the context of weight, height, voice training, and self-perception.

Study Design

One-year longitudinal collective case study.

Method

Twenty girls were recorded at the beginning and end of a year; nine girls were recorded another three times. SFo, vocal range, and characteristics were analyzed and interactions between these data assessed against weight and height to indicate pubertal development, and to test the hypothesis that changes in weight, height, SFo, and pitch breaks were related. Effects of training and the girls' self-perception of their voice use were also assessed.

Results

Vocal characteristics changed as the girls passed through different weight ranges. During 47.5–52.4 kg (called band 2) and 52.4–57.5 kg (band 3), there was progressive contraction of vocal range and in some girls a slight rise in SFo between recording times 1 and 5. Both high- and low-pitch breaks were present in 45% of girls' voices. Girls in band 4 (<57.5 kg) had an increased vocal range, and pitch breaks in vocal-range areas that indicated the development of adult vocal registers. In this study, voice-trained girls were heavier, had higher SFo, used wider speech-range inflection, had a higher vocal range, and greater voice-use confidence; all girls lost confidence in their voice use over the year.

Conclusions

In this longitudinal study of twenty 13-year-old girls, voice changes in SFo, vocal range, and pitch-break frequency were synchronous with certain weight ranges. Girls with training registered higher maximum phonational frequency and were more confident in their voice use than girls without training.  相似文献

This study was designed to investigate objective voice quality measurements in unilateral vocal fold paralysis (UVFP) by eliminating intersubject variability. To our knowledge this is the first report objectively analyzing paralytic dysphonia as compared to the same voice before onset of UVFP. The voices of two male subjects were prospectively recorded before and after the onset of iatrogenic UVFP (thoracic surgery). The following acoustic measurements of the vowel /a/ were performed using the CSL and MDVP (Kay Elemetrics): jitter, shimmer, harmonics-to-noise ratio, cepstral peak prominence, the relative energy levels of the first harmonic, the first formant and the third formant, the spectral slope in the low-frequency zone (0-1 kHz and 0-2 kHz), and the relative level of energy above 6 kHz. Distribution of spectral energy was analyzed from a long-term average spectrum of 40 seconds of text. Laryngeal aerodynamic measurements were obtained for one patient before and after onset of paralysis using the Aerophone II (Kay Elemetrics). Pitch and amplitude perturbation increased secondary to UVFP, while the harmonics-to-noise ratio and the cepstral peak prominence decreased. A relative increase in the mid-frequency and high-frequency ranges and a decrease in the low-frequency spectral slope were observed. Mean airflow rate and intraoral pressure increased, and glottal resistance and vocal efficiency decreased secondary to UVFP. The findings of this self-paired study confirm some but not all the results of previous studies. Measures involving the fundamental and the formants did not corroborate previous findings. Further investigation with vocal tract modeling is warranted.  相似文献

This study explores resonance strategies used for the belting style and associated vocal fold vibratory patterns, for the vowels /e/, /a/, /i/, and /u/ on G4 and B4-flat. Acoustic spectra of belted vowels and their unoptimized, \"speech-like\" equivalents were compared. Vocal fold vibratory patterns were quantified using electroglottography. Results show that /a/ is inherently suitable for belting and requires no adjustment. For /e/, F2-H5 tuning was observed. For /i/, F1 was detuned from H1, enhancing also H2. For /u/, both F1 and F2 were raised to accomplish F2-H3 tuning. These results show that the loud, bright sound of the belting style is achieved by the implementation of resonance strategies that enhance higher harmonics. Electroglottography revealed that resonance strategies also result in raising the closed quotient (CQ) above 52%, an apparent threshold value for belting.  相似文献

Measures of the SFF, vocal intensity, phonational range, and habitualpitch level are reported for 39 professional singer and 39 nonsinger females, who were divided into three age groups (young, middle, and old age), with the professionals further divided into sopranos and altos. Each read the “Rainbow Passage” and spoke extemporaneously, from which measures of the SFF and vocal intensity were calculated; phonational range and habitual pitch levels were also determined. No significant differences were noted between the reading and speaking tasks. The SFF and intensity levels were significantly higher for the professionals in comparison to the nonsingers, but only for certain age groups. Moreover, whereas the nonsinger SFF levels varied significantly as a function of age, those for the professional singers did not. Although trends occurred, no significant differences were found for the mean phonational range or habitual pitch levels when the professionals and nonsingers were compared.  相似文献

This investigation studied the effect of a systematized vocal warm-up procedure on voices with disorders. There were 4 subjects with voice disorders. To optimize vocal function a systematized vocal warm-up system was developed by the author for singers and nonsingers alike. Subjects were asked to practice the vocal warm-up exercises daily, with weekly monitoring in the studio. Data from independent raters and subjects' self-ratings were compared to and corroborated with computer analysis of audio samples. Results indicated significant improvement in subjects' voices that were increasingly maintained over time.  相似文献

Objective

To study the effects of voice treatment including brief voice therapy for 12 months in two groups of voice patients: organic and functional.

Design and Methods

A clinical prospective follow-up study with repeated measurements in five phases: medical session, first voice therapy session, last voice therapy session, and 6 months and 12 months after voice therapy. The mean number of voice therapy sessions was 3.4. The main outcome measures were the Voice Activity and Participation Profile (VAPP) and the Symptom Questionnaire.Of consenting patients (n = 141) with chronic voice disorders, 46 dropped out during follow-up. Ninety-five patients formed the study group. Forty-one of them received only voice therapy, but the rest of them received combined treatment (medication, amplifiers, and voice massage), but also experienced life events affecting voice. Patients with any laryngeal pathology formed the organic group (n = 47), others had a functional voice disorder.

Results

Using the improvement criterion that the change of the VAPP score should exceed standard error of measurement, the percentage of individual patients achieving improvement was 47% in the mild, 59% in the moderate, and 75% in the severe disorder groups. Effect size for VAPP total score was 0.89. The positive effect continued to progress after the therapy ended. Patients with functional or organic voice disorder improved almost equally, although minor findings indicate that functional patients benefited more.

Conclusions

Voice treatment had a progressive effect for 1 year in half of our patients. No statistical difference was found between the functional and organic patient groups.  相似文献

The fluorescence emitted from the gamma-ray-irradiated polyallyl diglycol carbonate upon illumination by the 346 nm UV radiation is studied. The fluorescence spectra show two distinct phenomena, the variation of fluorescence wavelength and intensity with received irradiation dose. These variations are found to be correlated to the change in the dielectric constant and the change in absorption. The dielectric constant is measured at three guiding frequencies, while the absorption is predicted with the reflected first and second diffractions of the excitation monochromator. The results support the donor-bridge-acceptor molecular origin of the fluorescence.  相似文献
