Let Qn denote the n-dimensional hypercube. In this paper we derive upper and lower bounds for the crossing number v(Qn), i.e., the minimum number of edge-crossings in any planar drawing of Qn. The upper bound is close to a result conjectured by Eggleton and Guy and the lower bound is a significant improvement over what was previously known. Let N = 2n be the number of vertices of Qn. We show that v(Qn) < 1/6N2. For the lower bound we prove that v(Qn) = Ω(N(lg N)c lg lg N), where c > 0 is a constant and lg is the logarithm base 2. The best lower bound using standard arguments is v(Qn) = Ω(N(lg N)2). The lower bound is obtained by constructing a large family of homeomorphs of a subcube with the property that no given pair of edges can appear in more than a constant number of the homeomorphs.  相似文献

How do we most quickly fold a paper strip (modeled as a line) to obtain a desired mountain-valley pattern of equidistant creases (viewed as a binary string)? Define the folding complexity of a mountain-valley string as the minimum number of simple folds required to construct it. We first show that the folding complexity of a length-n uniform string (all mountains or all valleys), and hence of a length-n pleat (alternating mountain/valley), is O(lg2 n). We also show that a lower bound of the complexity of the problems is ??(lg2 n/lg lg n). Next we show that almost all mountain-valley patterns require ??(n/lg n) folds, which means that the uniform and pleat foldings are relatively easy problems. We also give a general algorithm for folding an arbitrary sequence of length n in O(n/lg n) folds, meeting the lower bound up to a constant factor.  相似文献

This article deals with random walks on arbitrary graphs. We consider the cover time of finite graphs. That is, we study the expected time needed for a random walk on a finite graph to visit every vertex at least once. We establish an upper bound ofO(n 2) for the expectation of the cover time for regular (or nearly regular) graphs. We prove a lower bound of (n logn) for the expected cover time for trees. We establish new lower bounds on the complexity of the following basic geometric problem, attributed to John Hopcroft: Given a set ofn points andm hyperplanes in $\mathbb{R}^d $ , is any point contained in any hyperplane? We define a general class ofpartitioning algorithms, and show that in the worst case, for allm andn, any such algorithm requires time Ω(n logm + n 2/3m2/3 + m logn) in two dimensions, or Ω(n logm + n 5/6m1/2 + n1/2m5/6 + m logn) in three or more dimensions. We obtain slightly higher bounds for the counting version of Hopcroft's problem in four or more dimensions. Our planar lower bound is within a factor of 2O(log*(n+m)) of the best known upper bound, due to Matou?ek. Previously, the best known lower bound, in any dimension, was Ω(n logm + m logn). We develop our lower bounds in two stages. First we define a combinatorial representation of the relative order type of a set of points and hyperplanes, called amonochromatic cover, and derive lower bounds on its size in the worst case. We then show that the running time of any partitioning algorithm is bounded below by the size of some monochromatic cover. As a related result, using a straightforward adversary argument, we derive aquadratic lower bound on the complexity of Hopcroft's problem in a surprisingly powerful decision tree model of computation.  相似文献

We show new lower and upper bounds on the maximum number of maximal induced bipartite subgraphs of graphs with n vertices. We present an infinite family of graphs having 105n/10 ≈ 1.5926n; such subgraphs show an upper bound of O(12n/4) = O(1.8613n) and give an algorithm that finds all maximal induced bipartite subgraphs in time within a polynomial factor of this bound. We give a hierarchy of semidefinite upper bounds for the maximum size A(n,d) of a binary code of word length n and minimum distance at least d. At any fixed stage in the hierarchy, the bound can be computed (to an arbitrary precision) in time polynomial in n; this is based on a result of de Klerk et al. (Math Program, 2006) about the regular ∗-representation for matrix ∗-algebras. The Delsarte bound for A(n,d) is the first bound in the hierarchy, and the new bound of Schrijver (IEEE Trans. Inform. Theory 51:2859–2866, 2005) is located between the first and second bounds in the hierarchy. While computing the second bound involves a semidefinite program with O(n 7) variables and thus seems out of reach for interesting values of n, Schrijver’s bound can be computed via a semidefinite program of size O(n 3), a result which uses the explicit block-diagonalization of the Terwilliger algebra.    Abstract. A flipturn transforms a nonconvex simple polygon into another simple polygon by rotating a concavity 180° around the midpoint of its bounding convex hull edge. Joss and Shannon proved in 1973 that a sequence of flipturns eventually transforms any simple polygon into a convex polygon. This paper describes several new results about such flipturn sequences. We show that any orthogonal polygon is convexified after at most n-5 arbitrary flipturns, or at most
well-chosen flipturns, improving the previously best upper bound of (n-1)!/2 . We also show that any simple polygon can be convexified by at most n 2 -4n+1 flipturns, generalizing earlier results of Ahn et al. These bounds depend critically on how degenerate cases are handled; we carefully explore several possibilities. We prove that computing the longest flipturn sequence for a simple polygon is NP-hard. Finally, we show that although flipturn sequences for the same polygon can have significantly different lengths, the shape and position of the final convex polygon is the same for all sequences and can be computed in O(n log n) time.  相似文献

We relate the sequence of minimum bases of a matroid with linearly varying weights to three problems from combinatorial geometry: k -sets, lower envelopes of line segments, and convex polygons in line arrangements. Using these relations we show new lower bounds on the number of base changes in such sequences: Ω(nr 1/3 ) for a general n -element matroid with rank r , and Ω(mα(n)) for the special case of parametric graph minimum spanning trees. The only previous lower bound was Ω(n log r) for uniform matroids; upper bounds of O(mn 1/2 ) for arbitrary matroids and O(mn 1/2 / log * n) for uniform matroids were also known. We study the space complexity of refuting unsatisfiable random k-CNFs in the Resolution proof system. We prove that for Δ ≥ 1 and any ϵ > 0, with high probability a random k-CNF over n variables and Δn clauses requires resolution clause space of Ω(n1+ϵ). For constant Δ, this gives us linear, optimal, lower bounds on the clause space. One consequence of this lower bound is the first lower bound for size of treelike resolution refutations of random 3-CNFs with clause density Δ ≫ n. This bound is nearly tight. Specifically, we show that with high probability, a random 3-CNF with Δn clauses requires treelike refutation size of exp(Ω(n1+ϵ)), for any ϵ > 0. Our space lower bound is the consequence of three main contributions: (1) We introduce a 2-player Matching Game on bipartite graphs G to prove that there are no perfect matchings in G. (2) We reduce lower bounds for the clause space of a formula F in Resolution to lower bounds for the complexity of the game played on the bipartite graph G(F) associated with F. (3) We prove that the complexity of the game is large whenever G is an expander graph. Finally, a simple probabilistic analysis shows that for a random formula F, with high probability G(F) is an expander. We study asymptotically fast multiplication algorithms for matrix pairs of arbitrary di- mensions, and optimize the exponents of their arithmetic complexity bounds. For a large class of input matrix pairs, we improve the known exponents. We also show some applications of our results:(i) we decrease from O(n~2 n~(1 o)(1)logq)to O(n~(1.9998) n~(1 o(1))logq)the known arithmetic complexity bound for the univariate polynomial factorization of degree n over a finite field with q elements; (ii) we decrease from 2.837 to 2.7945 the known exponent of the work and arithmetic processor bounds for fast deterministic(NC)parallel evaluation of the determinant, the characteristic polynomial, and the inverse of an n×n matrix, as well as for the solution to a nonsingular linear system of n equations; (iii)we decrease from O(m~(1.575)n)to O(m~(1.5356)n)the known bound for computing basic solutions to a linear programming problem with m constraints and n variables.  相似文献

This paper gives an upper bound for the average running time of Batcher's odd–even merge sort when implemented on a collection of processors. We consider the case wheren, the size of the input, is an arbitrary multiple of the numberpof processors used. We show that Batcher's odd–even merge (for two sorted lists of lengthneach) can be implemented to run in timeO((n/p)(log(2 + p2/n))) on the average,1and that odd–even merge sort can be implemented to run in timeO((n/p)(log n + log p log(2 + p2/n))) on the average. In the case of merging (sorting), the average is taken over all possible outcomes of the merge (all possible permutations ofnelements). That means that odd–even merge and odd–even merge sort have an optimal average running time ifnp2. The constants involved are also quite small.  相似文献

In this paper we consider an optimization version of the multicommodity flow problem which is known as the maximum concurrent flow problem. We show that an approximate solution to this problem can be computed deterministically using O(k(ε −2 + logk) logn) 1-commodity minimum-cost flow computations, wherek is the number of commodities,n is the number of nodes, andε is the desired precision. We obtain this bound by proving that in the randomized algorithm developed by Leighton et al. (1995) the random selection of commodities can be replaced by the deterministic round-robin without increasing the total running time. Our bound significantly improves the previously known deterministic upper bounds and matches the best known randomized upper bound for the approximation concurrent flow problem. Abstract. We show that n arbitrary circles in the plane can be cut into O(n 3/2+ɛ ) arcs, for any ɛ>0 , such that any pair of arcs intersects at most once. This improves a recent result of Tamaki and Tokuyama [20]. We use this result to obtain improved upper bounds on the number of incidences between m points and n circles. The motivating problem for this paper is to find the expected covering time of a random walk on a balanced binary tree withn vertices. Previous upper bounds for general graphs ofO(|V| |E|)(1) andO(|V| |E|/d min)(2) imply an upper bound ofO(n 2). We show an upper bound on general graphs ofO( |E| log |V|), which implies an upper bound ofO(n log2 n). The previous lower bound was (|V| log |V|) for trees.(2) In our main result, we show a lower bound of (|V| (log d max |V|)2) for trees, which yields a lower bound of (n log2 n). A complete partition of a graph G is a partition of its vertex set in which any two distinct classes are connected by an edge. Let cp(G) denote the maximum number of classes in a complete partition of G. This measure was defined in 1969 by Gupta [19], and is known to be NP-hard to compute for several classes of graphs. We obtain essentially tight lower and upper bounds on the approximability of this problem. We show that there is a randomized polynomial-time algorithm that given a graph G with n vertices, produces a complete partition of size Ω(cp(G)/√lgn). This algorithm can be derandomized. We show that the upper bound is essentially tight: there is a constant C > 1, such that if there is a randomized polynomial-time algorithm that for all large n, when given a graph G with n vertices produces a complete partition into at least C·cp(G)/√lgn classes, then NP ⊆ RTime(n O(lg lg n)). The problem of finding a complete partition of a graph is thus the first natural problem whose approximation threshold has been determined to be of the form Θ((lgn) c ) for some constant c strictly between 0 and 1. We give a worst-case (n2/log n) lower bound on the number of vertex evaluations a deterministic algorithm needs to perform in order to find the (unique) sink of a unique sink oriented n-dimensional cube. We consider the problem in the vertex-oracle model, introduced in [18]. In this model one can access the orientation implicitly, in each vertex evaluation an oracle discloses the orientation of the edges incident to the queried vertex. An important feature of the model is that the access is indeed arbitrary, the algorithm does not have to proceed on a directed path in a simplex-like fashion, but could jump around. Our result is the first superlinear lower bound on the problem. The strategy we describe works even for acyclic orientations. We also give improved lower bounds for small values of n and fast algorithms in a couple of important special classes of orientations to demonstrate the difficulty of the lower bound problem.  相似文献

Let ℬ be a set ofn arbitrary (possibly intersecting) convex obstacles in ℝ d . It is shown that any two points which can be connected by a path avoiding the obstacles can also be connected by a path consisting ofO(n (d−1)[d/2+1]) segments. The bound cannot be improved below Ω(n d ); thus, in ℝ3, the answer is betweenn 3 andn 4. For open disjoint convex obstacles, a Θ(n) bound is proved. By a well-known reduction, the general case result also upper bounds the complexity for a translational motion of an arbitrary convex robot among convex obstacles. Asymptotically tight bounds and efficient algorithms are given in the planar case. The study of simple stochastic games (SSGs) was initiated by Condon for analyzing the computational power of randomized space-bounded alternating Turing machines. The game is played by two players, MAX and MIN, on a directed multigraph, and when the play terminates at a sink vertex s, MAX wins from MIN a payoff p(s)∈[0,1]. Condon proved that the problem SSG-VALUE—given a SSG, determine whether the expected payoff won by MAX is greater than 1/2 when both players use their optimal strategies—is in NP∩coNP. However, the exact complexity of this problem remains open, as it is not known whether the problem is in P or is hard for some natural complexity class. In this paper, we study the computational complexity of a strategy improvement algorithm by Hoffman and Karp for this problem. The Hoffman–Karp algorithm converges to optimal strategies of a given SSG, but no non-trivial bounds were previously known on its running time. We prove a bound of O(n2/n) on the convergence time of the Hoffman–Karp algorithm, and a bound of O(20.78n) on a randomized variant. These are the first non-trivial upper bounds on the convergence time of these strategy improvement algorithms.  相似文献
