The flow-induced vibrations of two elastically mounted circular cylinders subjected to the planar shear flow in tandem arrangement are studied numerically at Re=160. A four-step semi-implicit Characteristic-based split (4-SICBS) finite element method is developed under the framework of the fractional step method to cope with the vortex-induced vibration (VIV) problem. For the computational code verification, two benchmark problems are examined in the laminar region: flow-induced vibration of an elastically mounted cylinder having two degrees of freedom and past two stationary ones in tandem arrangement. Regarding the two-cylinder VIVs in shear flow, the computation is conducted with the cylinder reduced mass Mr=2.5π and the structural damping ratio ξ=0.0. The effects of some key parameters, such as shear rate (k=0.0, 0.05, 0.1), reduced velocity (Ur=3.0–18.0) and spacing ratio (Lx/D=2.5, 3.5, 4.5, 8.0), are demonstrated. It is observed that the shear rate and reduced velocity play an important role in the VIVs of both cylinders at various center-to-center distances. Additionally, in comparison with the single cylinder case, a further study indicated that the gap flow has a significant impact on such a dynamic system, leading it to be more complex. The results show that, the performances of ‘dual-resonant’ are discovered in the shear flow. A valley is formed in transverse oscillation amplitude of DC for each spacing ratio when Ur is about 6.0. For the X–Y trajectories of the circular cylinders, figure-eight, figure-O and oval shape are obtained. Finally, the interactions between cylinders are revealed, together with the wake-induced vibration (WIV) mechanism underlying the oscillation characteristics of both cylinders exposed to shear flow. Besides, the “T+P” wake pattern is discovered herein.

Vortex-induced vibrations (VIV) of two side-by-side elastically supported circular cylinders in a uniform flow with the Reynolds number of 100 are numerically investigated by using the immersed boundary method. The cylinders are constrained to oscillate in the cross-flow direction with a center-to-center spacing ratio T/D ranging from 2 to 5. The structural damping is set to zero to enable large vibration amplitudes in the range of reduced velocity Ur=310. It is found that the proximity of the cylinders does not have a significant impact to the lock-in region and cylinder responses, except at a small spacing ratio of T/D=2. The critical spacing ratio is determined as T/D=4 and beyond that the interaction between the cylinders is negligible. The following six near-wake patterns are observed; the irregular pattern, in-phase flip-flopping pattern, out-of-phase flip-flopping pattern, in-phase-synchronized pattern, antiphase-synchronized pattern and the biased antiphase-synchronized pattern. These patterns are plotted in a plane of Ur and T/D, together with approximate borderlines to distinguish one region from the others. The time histories, spectral features and wavelet transform contours of drag and lift forces are presented to elucidate the mechanisms of the in-phase and out-of-phase flip-flopping phenomena. It is established that the in-phase flip-flopping stems from the long-short near-wake pattern and its low-frequency flip-over, whereas the out-of-phase pattern originates from the large vortex shedding from the fictitious bluff-body with an augmented characteristic length.

The effect of free-stream turbulence on vortex-induced vibration of two side-by-side elastic cylinders in a cross-flow was investigated experimentally. A turbulence generation grid was used to generate turbulent incoming flow with turbulence intensity around 10%. Cylinder displacements in the transverse direction at cylinder mid-span were measured in the reduced velocity range 1.45<Ur0<12.08, corresponding to a range of Reynolds number (Re), based on the mean free-stream velocity and the diameter of the cylinder, between Re=5000–41 000. The focus of the study is on the regime of biased gap flow, where two cylinders with pitch ratio (T/D) varying from 1.17 to 1.90 are considered. Results show that the free-stream turbulence effect is to enhance the vortex-induced force, thus to restore the large-amplitude vibration associated with the lock-in resonance. However, the enhancement is significant at a different Strouhal number (St) for different pitch ratios. When the spacing between two cylinders is relatively small (1.17<T/D<1.50), the enhancement is significant at St≈0.1. When the spacing is increased, the Strouhal number at which the enhancement is significant shifts to St≈0.16. This enlarges the range of reduced velocity to be concerned. An energy analysis showed that free-stream turbulence feeds energy to the cylinder at multiple frequencies of vortex shedding. Therefore, the lock-in region is still of main concern when the approach flow is turbulent.

A free-vibration experiment was conducted to examine flow-induced vibration (FIV) characteristics of two identical circular cylinders in side-by-side arrangements at spacing ratio T (=T/D)=0.1–3.2, covering all possible flow regimes, where T is the gap spacing between the cylinders and D is the cylinder diameter. Each of the cylinders was two-dimensional, spring mounted, and allowed to vibrate independently in the cross-flow direction. Furthermore, an attempt to suppress flow-induced vibrations was undertaken by attaching flexible sheets at the rear stagnation lines of the cylinders. Based on the vibration responses of the two cylinders, four vibration patterns I, II, III and IV are identified at 0.1≤T<0.2, 0.2≤T≤0.9, 0.9<T<2.1 and 2.1≤T≤3.2, respectively. Pattern I is characterized by the two cylinders vibrating inphase, with the maximum amplitudes occurring at the same reduced velocity Ur=10.47 almost two times that (Ur=5.25) for an isolated cylinder. Pattern II features no vibration generated for either cylinder. Pattern III exemplifies the occurrence of the maximum vibration amplitude of a cylinder at a smaller Ur and that of the other cylinder at a higher Ur compared to its counterpart in an isolated cylinder. Pattern IV represents each cylinder response resembling an isolated cylinder response; the vibrations of the two cylinders are, however, coupled inphase or antiphase. Linking maximum vibration amplitudes to fluctuating lift forces acting on fixed cylinders reveals that fluid–structure interactions between two fixed cylinders and between two elastic cylinders are not the same, even though vibration is not significant. As such, while two fixed cylinders generate narrow and wide wakes at 0.2≤T<1.7, two elastic cylinders do the same for a longer range of T (0.2≤T<2.1). The flexible sheets effectively suppress FIV of the two cylinders in patterns III and IV, and reduce the vibration amplitude in pattern I. For the effectively controlled cases (patterns III and IV), the flexible sheet of each cylinder folds into a semicircle at the base, forming two free edges.

The flow interference between two circular cylinders, one stationary and the other free to oscillate in the transverse direction, are studied numerically at Re=150. The incompressible Navier–Stokes equation in two space dimensions, an assumption that is expected to be valid at the considered Re, is solved by the characteristic-based-split (CBS) finite element method using the T4/C3 MINI triangular element. The center-to-center spacing between the two cylinders is fixed at 4D, where D is the cylinder diameter. The angle of incident flow, α, with respect to the line through the two cylinder centers, varies within the range from α=0° to 90°. For the elastically mounted cylinder, the reduced mass considered is Mr=2.0; the structural damping coefficient is assigned to be zero, which encourages high amplitude oscillations. For each α, the computations are conducted for a wide range of reduced velocities, Ur. The flow interference is examined by scrutinizing (i) the frequency characteristics of the vortex shedding and oscillation; (ii) the dynamic response of the oscillating cylinder, including the amplitude of displacement, the drag and lift force characteristics and the phase relationship between the lift and the displacement series; and (iii) the flow response in terms of the instantaneous vorticity field. It was found that the flow interference type is significantly affected by the angle of the incident flow. As the cylinder is oscillated outside of the region of the wake behind the stationary cylinder (α≥30°), it behaves similarly to its isolated counterpart. In contrast, if the cylinder is partially or entirely submerged within the upstream wake (α<30°), then both the flow and body responses are substantially modified due to the vigorous interaction between the upstream wake and the oscillating cylinder; the response therefore belongs to the wake-induced regime. The Ur range associated with the higher amplitude response is significantly shifted toward a higher Ur. The maximum vibration amplitude builds up to a significantly higher level, even increasing the Ur far beyond the resonance regime. In general, the wake flow associated with the wake-induced vibration (WIV) regime appears to be more unperiodic than does that corresponding to the vortex-induced oscillation regime. It is also revealed that both the vortex-cylinder and the shear layer-cylinder interaction mechanisms are responsible for the characteristics of the responses of oscillating cylinder. The larger momentum required for the higher oscillation amplitude is obtained from the duration of the energy transfer from the fluid to the cylinder, which is ascribed to the phase lag between the lift force and the cylinder displacement.

Two-dimensional numerical simulations of flow past two unequal-sized circular cylinders in tandem arrangement are performed at low Reynolds numbers (Re). The upstream larger cylinder is stationary, while the downstream cylinder has both one (transverse-only) and two (transverse and in-line) degrees of freedom (1-dof and 2-dof, respectively). The Re, based on the free stream velocity U and the downstream cylinder diameter d, varies between 50 and 200 with a wide range of reduced velocities Ur. The diameter of the upstream cylinder is twice that of the downstream cylinder, and the center-to-center spacing is 5.5d. In general, for the 1-dof case, the calculations show that the wake-induced vibrations (WIV) of the downstream cylinder are greatly amplified when compared to the case of a single cylinder or two equal-sized cylinders. The transverse amplitudes build up to a significantly higher level within and beyond the lock-in region, and the Ur associated with the peak amplitude shifts toward a higher value. The dominant wake pattern is 2S mode for Re=50 and 100, while with the increase of Re to 150 and 200, the P+S mode can be clearly observed at some lower Ur. For the 2-dof vibrations, the transverse response characteristics are similar to those presented in the corresponding 1-dof case. The in-line responses are generally much smaller, except for several significant vibrations resulting from in-line resonance. The obvious in-line vibration may induce a C (chaotic) vortex shedding mode for higher Re (Re=200). With regard to the 2-dof motion trajectories, besides the typical figure-eight pattern, several odd patterns such as figure-double eight and single-looped trajectories are also obtained due to the wake interference effect.

This paper presents a numerical study of three-dimensional (3-D) laminar flow around four circular cylinders in an in-line square configuration. The investigation focuses on effects of spacing ratio (L/D) and aspect ratio (H/D) on 3-D flow characteristics, and the force and pressure coefficients of the cylinders. Extensive 3-D numerical simulations were performed at Reynolds number of 200 for L/D from 1.6 to 5.0 at H/D=16 and H/D from 6 to 20 at L/D=3.5. The results show that the 3-D numerical simulations have remedied the inadequacy of 2-D simulations and the results are in excellent agreement with the experimental results. The relation between 3-D flow patterns and pressure characteristics around the four cylinders is examined and discussed. The critical spacing ratio for flow pattern transformation was found to be L/D=3.5 for H/D=16, while a bistable wake pattern was observed at L/D=1.6 for the same aspect ratio. Moreover, a transformation of flow pattern from a stable shielding flow pattern to a vortex shedding flow pattern near the middle spanwise positions of the cylinders was observed and was found to be dependent on the aspect ratio, spacing ratio, and end wall conditions. Due to the highly 3-D nature of the flows, different flow patterns coexist over different spanwise positions of the cylinders even for the same aspect ratio. It is concluded that spacing ratio, aspect ratio, and the no-slip end wall condition have important combined effects on free shear layer development of the cylinders and hence have significant effects on the pressure field and force characteristics of the four cylinders with different spacing ratios and aspect ratios.
