Multivariate isotonic regression theory plays a key role in the field of statistical inference under order restriction for vector valued parameters. Two cases of estimating multivariate normal means under order restricted set are considered. One case is that covariance matrices are known, the other one is that covariance matrices are unknown but are restricted by partial order. This paper shows that when covariance matrices are known, the estimator given by this paper always dominates unrestricted maximum likelihood estimator uniformly, and when covariance matrices are unknown, the plug-in estimator dominates unrestricted maximum likelihood estimator under the order restricted set of covariance matrices. The isotonic regression estimators in this paper are the generalizations of plug-in estimators in unitary case. 相似文献

In this paper we consider robust parameter estimation based on a certain cross entropy and divergence. The robust estimate is defined as the minimizer of the empirically estimated cross entropy. It is shown that the robust estimate can be regarded as a kind of projection from the viewpoint of a Pythagorean relation based on the divergence. This property implies that the bias caused by outliers can become sufficiently small even in the case of heavy contamination. It is seen that the asymptotic variance of the robust estimator is naturally overweighted in proportion to the ratio of contamination. One may surmise that another form of cross entropy can present the same behavior as that discussed above. It can be proved under some conditions that no cross entropy can present the same behavior except for the cross entropy considered here and its monotone transformation. 相似文献

We establish the Stein phenomenon in the context of two-step, monotone incomplete data drawn from , a (p+q)-dimensional multivariate normal population with mean and covariance matrix . On the basis of data consisting of n observations on all p+q characteristics and an additional N−n observations on the last q characteristics, where all observations are mutually independent, denote by the maximum likelihood estimator of . We establish criteria which imply that shrinkage estimators of James-Stein type have lower risk than under Euclidean quadratic loss. Further, we show that the corresponding positive-part estimators have lower risk than their unrestricted counterparts, thereby rendering the latter estimators inadmissible. We derive results for the case in which is block-diagonal, the loss function is quadratic and non-spherical, and the shrinkage estimator is constructed by means of a nondecreasing, differentiable function of a quadratic form in . For the problem of shrinking to a vector whose components have a common value constructed from the data, we derive improved shrinkage estimators and again determine conditions under which the positive-part analogs have lower risk than their unrestricted counterparts. 相似文献

We propose a class of robust estimates for multivariate linear models. Based on the approach of MM-estimation (Yohai 1987, [24]), we estimate the regression coefficients and the covariance matrix of the errors simultaneously. These estimates have both a high breakdown point and high asymptotic efficiency under Gaussian errors. We prove consistency and asymptotic normality assuming errors with an elliptical distribution. We describe an iterative algorithm for the numerical calculation of these estimates. The advantages of the proposed estimates over their competitors are demonstrated through both simulated and real data. 相似文献

Inference on the largest mean of a multivariate normal distribution is a surprisingly difficult and unexplored topic. Difficulties arise when two or more of the means are simultaneously the largest mean. Our proposed solution is based on an extension of R.A. Fisher’s fiducial inference methods termed generalized fiducial inference. We use a model selection technique along with the generalized fiducial distribution to allow for equal largest means and alleviate the overestimation that commonly occurs. Our proposed confidence intervals for the largest mean have asymptotically correct frequentist coverage and simulation results suggest that they possess promising small sample empirical properties. In addition to the theoretical calculations and simulations we also applied this approach to the air quality index of the four largest cities in the northeastern United States (Baltimore, Boston, New York, and Philadelphia). 相似文献

A finite sample performance measure of multivariate location estimators is introduced based on “tail behavior”. The tail performance of multivariate “monotone” location estimators and the halfspace depth based “non-monotone” location estimators including the Tukey halfspace median and multivariate L-estimators is investigated. The connections among the finite sample performance measure, the finite sample breakdown point, and the halfspace depth are revealed. It turns out that estimators with high breakdown point or halfspace depth have “appealing” tail performance. The tail performance of the halfspace median is very appealing and also robust against underlying population distributions, while the tail performance of the sample mean is very sensitive to underlying population distributions. These findings provide new insights into the notions of the halfspace depth and breakdown point and identify the important role of tail behavior as a quantitative measure of robustness in the multivariate location setting. 相似文献

The maximum asymptotic bias of an estimator is a global robustness measure of its performance. The projection median estimator for multivariate location shows a remarkable behavior regarding asymptotic bias. In this paper we consider a modification of the projection median estimator which renders an estimate with better bias performance for point mass contaminations (the worst situation for the projection median estimator). Moreover, it achieves the lowest bound for an equivariant estimate for point mass contaminations. 相似文献

This paper is concerned with the problem of estimating a matrix of means in multivariate normal distributions with an unknown covariance matrix under invariant quadratic loss. It is first shown that the modified Efron-Morris estimator is characterized as a certain empirical Bayes estimator. This estimator modifies the crude Efron-Morris estimator by adding a scalar shrinkage term. It is next shown that the idea of this modification provides a general method for improvement of estimators, which results in the further improvement on several minimax estimators. As a new method for improvement, an adaptive combination of the modified Stein and the James-Stein estimators is also proposed and is shown to be minimax. Through Monte Carlo studies of the risk behaviors, it is numerically shown that the proposed, combined estimator inherits the nice risk properties of both individual estimators and thus it has a very favorable risk behavior in a small sample case. Finally, the application to a two-way layout MANOVA model with interactions is discussed. 相似文献

A weighted multivariate signed-rank test is introduced for an analysis of multivariate clustered data. Observations in different clusters may then get different weights. The test provides a robust and efficient alternative to normal theory based methods. Asymptotic theory is developed to find the approximate p-value as well as to calculate the limiting Pitman efficiency of the test. A conditionally distribution-free version of the test is also discussed. The finite-sample behavior of different versions of the test statistic is explored by simulations and the new test is compared to the unweighted and weighted versions of Hotelling’s T2 test and the multivariate spatial sign test introduced in [D. Larocque, J. Nevalainen, H. Oja, A weighted multivariate sign test for cluster-correlated data, Biometrika 94 (2007) 267-283]. Finally, a real data example is used to illustrate the theory. 相似文献

We propose a new class of rotation invariant and consistent goodness-of-fit tests for multivariate distributions based on Euclidean distance between sample elements. The proposed test applies to any multivariate distribution with finite second moments. In this article we apply the new method for testing multivariate normality when parameters are estimated. The resulting test is affine invariant and consistent against all fixed alternatives. A comparative Monte Carlo study suggests that our test is a powerful competitor to existing tests, and is very sensitive against heavy tailed alternatives. 相似文献

Composite and pairwise likelihood methods have recently been increasingly used. For clustered data with varying cluster sizes, we study asymptotic relative efficiencies for various weighted pairwise likelihoods, with weight being a function of cluster size. For longitudinal data, we also study weighted pairwise likelihoods with weights that can depend on lag. Good choice of weights are needed to avoid the undesirable behavior of estimators with low efficiency. Some analytic results are obtained using the multivariate normal distribution. For clustered data, a practically good choice of weight is obtained after study of relative efficiencies for an exchangeable multivariate normal model; they are different from weights that had previously been suggested. For longitudinal data, there are advantages to only include bivariate margins of adjacent or nearly adjacent pairs in the weighted pairwise likelihood. 相似文献

In this article, we consider a model check test for linear processes with infinite variance. As a test statistic, we employ the portmanteau test with trimmed residuals. It is shown that the limiting null distribution of the test is a chi-square distribution. Simulation results are provided for illustration. 相似文献

Parameters of Gaussian multivariate models are often estimated using the maximum likelihood approach. In spite of its merits, this methodology is not practical when the sample size is very large, as, for example, in the case of massive georeferenced data sets. In this paper, we study the asymptotic properties of the estimators that minimize three alternatives to the likelihood function, designed to increase the computational efficiency. This is achieved by applying the information sandwich technique to expansions of the pseudo-likelihood functions as quadratic forms of independent normal random variables. Theoretical calculations are given for a first-order autoregressive time series and then extended to a two-dimensional autoregressive process on a lattice. We compare the efficiency of the three estimators to that of the maximum likelihood estimator as well as among themselves, using numerical calculations of the theoretical results and simulations. 相似文献

For independently distributed observables: Xi∼N(θi,σ2),i=1,…,p, we consider estimating the vector θ=(θ1,…,θp)′ with loss ‖d−θ‖2 under the constraint , with known τ1,…,τp,σ2,m. In comparing the risk performance of Bayesian estimators δα associated with uniform priors on spheres of radius α centered at (τ1,…,τp) with that of the maximum likelihood estimator , we make use of Stein’s unbiased estimate of risk technique, Karlin’s sign change arguments, and a conditional risk analysis to obtain for a fixed (m,p) necessary and sufficient conditions on α for δα to dominate . Large sample determinations of these conditions are provided. Both cases where all such δα’s and cases where no such δα’s dominate are elicited. We establish, as a particular case, that the boundary uniform Bayes estimator δm dominates if and only if m≤k(p) with , improving on the previously known sufficient condition of Marchand and Perron (2001) [3] for which . Finally, we improve upon a universal dominance condition due to Marchand and Perron, by establishing that all Bayesian estimators δπ with π spherically symmetric and supported on the parameter space dominate whenever m≤c1(p) with . 相似文献

The purpose of this paper is, in multivariate linear regression model (Part I) and GMANOVA model (Part II), to investigate the effect of nonnormality upon the nonnull distributions of some multivariate test statistics under normality. It is shown that whatever the underlying distributions, the difference of local powers up to order N−1 after either Bartlett’s type adjustment or Cornish-Fisher’s type size adjustment under nonnormality coincides with that in Anderson [An Introduction to Multivariate Statistical Analysis, 2nd ed. and 3rd ed., Wiley, New York, 1984, 2003] under normality. The derivation of asymptotic expansions is based on the differential operator associated with the multivariate linear regression model under general distributions. The performance of higher-order results in finite samples, including monotone Bartlett’s type adjustment and monotone Cornish-Fisher’s type size adjustment, is examined using simulation studies. 相似文献

We consider the problem of deriving the asymptotic distribution of the three commonly used multivariate test statistics, namely likelihood ratio, Lawley-Hotelling and Bartlett-Nanda-Pillai statistics, for testing hypotheses on the various effects (main, nested or interaction) in multivariate mixed models. We derive the distributions of these statistics, both in the null as well as non-null cases, as the number of levels of one of the main effects (random or fixed) goes to infinity. The robustness of these statistics against departure from normality will be assessed.Essentially, in the asymptotic spirit of this paper, both the hypothesis and error degrees of freedom tend to infinity at a fixed rate. It is intuitively appealing to consider asymptotics of this type because, for example, in random or mixed effects models, the levels of the main random factors are assumed to be a random sample from a large population of levels. For the asymptotic results of this paper to hold, we do not require any distributional assumption on the errors. That means the results can be used in real-life applications where normality assumption is not tenable. As it happens, the asymptotic distributions of the three statistics are normal. The statistics have been found to be asymptotically null robust against the departure from normality in the balanced designs. The expressions for the asymptotic means and variances are fairly simple. That makes the results an attractive alternative to the standard asymptotic results. These statements are favorably supported by the numerical results. 相似文献

This paper treats the problem of estimating positive parameters restricted to a polyhedral convex cone which includes typical order restrictions, such as simple order, tree order and umbrella order restrictions. In this paper, two methods are used to show the improvement of order-preserving estimators over crude non-order-preserving estimators without any assumption on underlying distributions. One is to use Fenchel’s duality theorem, and then the superiority of the isotonic regression estimator is established under the general restriction to polyhedral convex cones. The use of the Abel identity is the other method, and we can derive a class of improved estimators which includes order-statistics-based estimators in the typical order restrictions. When the underlying distributions are scale families, the unbiased estimators and their order-restricted estimators are shown to be minimax. The minimaxity of the restrictedly generalized Bayes estimator against the prior over the restricted space is also demonstrated in the two dimensional case. Finally, some examples and multivariate extensions are given. 相似文献

Partially linear regression models with fixed effects are useful tools for making econometric analyses and normalizing microarray data. Baltagi and Li (2002) [7] proposed a computation friendly difference-based series estimation (DSE) for them. We show that the DSE is not asymptotically efficient in most cases and further propose a weighted difference-based series estimation (WDSE). The weights in it do not involve any unknown parameters. The asymptotic properties of the resulting estimators are established for both balanced and unbalanced cases, and it is shown that they achieve a semiparametric efficient boundary. Additionally, we propose a variable selection procedure for identifying significant covariates in the parametric part of the semiparametric fixed-effects regression model. The method is based on a combination of the nonconcave penalization (Fan and Li, 2001 [13]) and weighted difference-based series estimation techniques. The resulting estimators have the oracle property; that is, they can correctly identify the true model as if the true model (the subset of variables with nonvanishing coefficients) were known in advance. Simulation studies are conducted and an application is given to demonstrate the finite sample performance of the proposed procedures. 相似文献
