Thermotropic liquid‐crystalline (LC) semirigid polyesters based on three terphenyl analogues of 1,3,4‐thiadiazole (2,5‐diphenyl‐1,3,4‐thiadiazole)s (DPTD) linking undecamethyleneoxy chain at different substituted positions were synthesized from three disubstituted (4,4′‐, 3,4′‐, and 3,3′‐) dioxydiundecanols of DPTD and four diesters, and the relationships between polymer structures and LC and optical properties were investigated. DSC measurements, texture observations, and wide‐angle X‐ray analyses revealed that the polymers composed of DPTD moiety having a more linear molecular structure and 1,4‐phenylene unit or short aliphatic chain tend to exhibit LC smectic C and/or A phases. The following observations were made: (1) the emergence of smectic C and/or A phases in all the polymers on the basis of 4,4′‐disubstituted DPTD, (2) formation of enantiotropic smectic C and/or A phases in the polymers containing a 1,4‐phenylene unit in the main chain, (3) formation of a more stable smectic C phase in the polymers having a short aliphatic [(CH2)4] chain, and (4) a decrease of the mesomorphic property of the polyesters in the order of 4,4′‐DPTD > 3,4′‐DPTD > 3,3′‐DPTD. Solution and solid‐state ultraviolet–visible and photoluminescent spectra indicated that all the polyesters display maximum absorbances and blue emissions arising from the DPTD moiety, whose peak maxima were shifted to lower wavelengths in the order of 4,4′‐DPTD > 3,4′‐DPTD > 3,3′‐DPTD as well as the aforementioned LC property. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Liquid‐crystalline, segmented polyurethanes with methoxy–biphenyl mesogens pendant on the chain extender were synthesized by the conventional prepolymer technique and esterification reaction. Two, side‐chain, liquid‐crystalline (SCLC) polyurethanes with mesogens having spacers of six and eight methylene units were prepared. The structures of the mesogenic units and SCLC polyurethanes were confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and 1H NMR. Polymer properties were also examined by solubility tests, water uptakes, and inherent viscosity measurements. Differential scanning calorimetry studies indicated that the transition temperature of the isotropic to the liquid‐crystalline phase decreased with increasing spacer length. Wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction (WAXD) studies revealed the existence of liquid‐crystalline phases for both SCLC polyurethanes. Polarized optical microscopic investigations further confirmed the thermotropic liquid‐crystalline behaviors and nematic mesophases of both samples. Thermogravimetric analysis displayed better thermal stabilities for both SCLC polymers and indicated that the presence of mesogenic side chains may increase the thermal stability of segmented polyurethanes. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A set of poly[ω‐(4′‐cyano‐4‐biphenyloxy)alkyl‐1‐glycidylether]s were synthesized by the chemical modification of the corresponding poly(ω‐bromoalkyl‐1‐glycidylether)s with the sodium salt of 4‐cyano‐4′‐hydroxybiphenyl. New high‐molecular‐weight side‐chain liquid‐crystalline polymers were obtained with excellent yield and almost quantitative degree of modification. All side‐chain liquid‐crystalline polymers were rubbers soluble in tetrahydrofuran. The characterization by 1H and 13C NMR revealed no changes in the regioregular isotactic microstructure of the starting polymer and the absence of undesirable side reactions such as deshydrobromination. The liquid crystalline behavior was analyzed by DSC and polarized optical microscopy, and mesophase assignments were confirmed by X‐ray diffraction. Polymers that had alkyl spacers with n = 2 and 4 were nematic, those that had spacers with n = 6 and 8 were nematic cybotactic, and those that had longer spacers (n = 10 and 12) were smectic C and showed some crystallization of the side alkyl chains. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of main‐chain, thermotropic, liquid‐crystalline (LC), hydrogen‐bonded polymers or self‐assembled structures based on 4,4′‐bipyridyl as a hydrogen‐bond acceptor and aliphatic dicarboxylic acids, such as adipic and sebacic acids, as hydrogen‐bond donors were prepared by a slow evaporation technique from a pyridine solution and were characterized for their thermotropic, LC properties with a number of experimental techniques. The homopolymer of 4,4′‐bipyridyl with adipic acid exhibited high‐order and low‐order smectic phases, and that with sebacic acid exhibited only a high‐order smectic phase. Like the homopolymer with adipic acid, the two copolymers of 4,4′‐bipyridyl with adipic and sebacic acids (75/25 and 25/75) also exhibited two types of smectic phases. In contrast, the copolymer of 4,4′‐bipyridyl with adipic and sebacic acids (50/50), like the homopolymer with sebacic acid, exhibited only one high‐order smectic phase. Each of them, including the copolymers, had a broad temperature range of LC phases (36–51 °C). The effect of copolymerization for these hydrogen‐bonded polymers on the thermotropic properties was examined. Generally, copolymerization increased the temperature range of LC phases for these polymers, as expected, with a larger decrease in the crystal‐to‐LC transition than in the LC‐to‐isotropic transition. Additionally, it neither suppressed the formation of smectic phases nor promoted the formation of a nematic phase in these hydrogen‐bonded polymers, as usually observed in many thermotropic LC polymers. The thermal transitions for all of them, measured by differential scanning calorimetry, were well below their decomposition temperatures, as measured by thermogravimetric analysis, which were in the temperature range of 193–210 °C. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Novel liquid‐crystalline alternating conjugated copolymers [ P(P(6)CN‐alt‐Cz) and P(P(6)CN‐alt‐MeP) ] with phenylene and carbazolylene or phenylene with methyl substitution onto the main chain have been synthesized through palladium‐catalyzed Suzuki coupling reactions. The influence of the incorporation of carbazolylene and the substituted phenylene into the main chain on the thermal, mesomorphic, and luminescent properties has been investigated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetry, differential scanning calorimetry, polarized optical microscopy, ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy, photoluminescence (PL), and cyclic voltammetry. These polymers show highly thermal stability, losing little of their weights when heated to 360 °C. The conjugated copolymers exhibit liquid crystallinity at elevated temperature. The existence of the chromophoric terphenyl core endows the copolymers with high PL and the polymer P(P(6)CN‐alt‐Cz containing carbazolylene unit can emit more pure blue light. All the copolymer films with low band gaps about 2.3–2.4 eV undergo reversible oxidation and reduction processes, significantly lower than the band gap of poly(p‐phenylene). © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We examine some of the structural aspects that influence the mesomorphic behavior of liquid‐crystalline dimeric epoxy resins with imine groups in the mesogens. We synthesized two new series of monomers and compared them with previously synthesized monomers. Compared with previously studied series, the imine group in the new monomers is oriented differently with respect to the ether and ester groups linked to the end of the mesogenic unit. Our results confirmed the importance of polarization of the mesogenic groups and the presence of an ester group in the inner position in the formation of smectic mesophases. By curing with primary and tertiary amines, we demonstrate that these two requirements are necessary if liquid‐crystalline thermosets are to be obtained with different degrees of order. These studies were carried out with differential scanning calorimetry, polarized optical microscopy, and X‐ray diffraction. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We synthesized novel epoxy‐terminated monomers on the basis of imine groups with spacers of different lengths between mesogens and reactive groups and examined their mesogenic properties. Their reaction with primary aromatic diamines and tertiary amines was carried out to investigate the formation of liquid‐crystalline thermosets. We explored how the curing conditions and the structures of the monomers and amines affected the formation of ordered networks. The special symmetry of a 1,5‐disubstituted naphthalene unit in the central core led to nematic mesophases in the pure liquid‐crystalline epoxy resins, and thermosets with locked nematic textures were obtained in all cases, regardless of the length of the spacer. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Three series of semiflexible and rigid main‐chain polyesters containing photoreactive mesogenic units derived from p‐phenylenediacrylic acid (PDA) and cinnamic acid have been synthesized by high‐temperature polycondensation. The thermal and mesomorphic properties of the polymers have been determined. The photochemical behavior of polymer P‐[1]‐T, which contains a PDA unit, has been studied both in solution and in films. In solution, [2+2] photocycloaddition, E/Z photoisomerization, and photo‐Fries rearrangement can take place. In contrast, the dominant process in spin‐coated films is the [2+2] photocycloaddition reaction, which causes crosslinking of the polymer. In films, the photochemistry and induction of anisotropy are strongly influenced by the aggregation of the PDA phenylester unit. A dichroism of about 0.2 has been induced in films by irradiation with linearly polarized UV light, and thus the capability of these films to induce optical anisotropy and align liquid crystals has been demonstrated. Liquid‐crystalline cells have been made with polarized irradiated films of P‐[1]‐T as aligning layers. A commercial liquid‐crystalline mixture has been used for this study, and a similar liquid‐crystalline order determined by polarized Fourier transform infrared to a commercial cell with rubbed polyimide as an aligning layer has been detected. Because of crosslinking of the irradiated P‐[1]‐T photoaligning layer, the photoinduced anisotropy is stable at high temperatures, and the liquid‐crystalline molecules are insoluble in the irradiated polymer. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The structures and properties of liquid‐crystalline polymers containing laterally attached p‐terphenyl and p‐pentaphenyl have been studied. In contrast to their mesogenic groups, that is, p‐terphenyl and p‐pentaphenyl, the polymers have much lower crystallinity and also lower nematic‐to‐isotropic transition temperatures. The significant depression in crystallinity can be attributed to flexible chain segments laterally attached to the oligo p‐phenylene rods, which prevent close packing of the rods and thus disrupt the crystallization. The destabilization of the liquid‐crystalline phase is due to the diluting effect of the flexible polymer backbones; that is, the concentration of the mesogenic groups is reduced. The polymer containing p‐pentaphenyl can still exhibit good solubility in common solvents and emit light at about 402 nm in the solvent tetrahydrofuran. In the solid state, the emission redshifts to 418 nm, which is fairly close to the blue‐light emission. An interdigitated packing structure of mesogenic groups has been proposed to represent the structure of the polymer in the oriented state. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The effects of different surface modifications on the adhesion of copper to a liquid‐crystalline polymer (LCP) were investigated with X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, contact‐angle measurements, and pull tests. High pull‐strength values were achieved when copper was sputter‐deposited onto plasma and reactive‐ion‐etching (RIE)‐pretreated LCP surfaces. The values were comparable to the reference pull strengths obtained with laminated copper on the LCP. The adhesion was relatively insensitive to the employed feed gas in the pretreatments. The surface characterizations revealed that for RIE and plasma treatments, the enhanced adhesion was attributable to the synergistic effects of the increased surface roughness and polar component of the surface free energy of the polymer. However, if the electroless copper deposition was performed on RIE‐ or plasma‐treated surfaces, very poor adhesion was measured. Good adhesion between the LCP substrate and electrolessly deposited copper was achieved only in the case of wet‐chemical surface roughening as a result of the creation of a sufficient number of mechanical interlocking sites, together with a significant loss of oxygen functionalities, on the surface. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The anisotropic mechanical properties of the thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) in situ reinforced with thermotropic liquid‐crystalline polymer (TLCP) fibers were investigated by uniaxial, strip‐biaxial, and equibiaxial tensile measurements. The in situ composite sheets were prepared from an immiscible blend of a TLCP, Rodrun LC3000, and a TPE, styrene‐(ethylene butylene)‐styrene (SEBS) triblock copolymer, by a melt extrusion process. The uniaxial orientation of the TLCP fibers in the TPE matrix generated during processing yielded a significant mechanical anisotropy in the composites. The biaxial tensile measurements clearly demonstrated the anisotropic mechanical properties of the composites: The modulus in the direction parallel to the machine direction (MD) was considerably higher than that in the transverse direction (TD), even at large deformations; in equibiaxial stretching, the yield strain in the MD was smaller than that in the TD; the composite containing 10 wt % of TLCP exhibited the highest mechanical anisotropy among the composites, with 0–30 wt % TLCP. The latter result was in accord with the SEM observation that the composite with 10 wt % of TLCP possessed the best fibrillar morphology and the highest degree of uniaxial orientation of the TLCP fibers. The yield strains in uni‐ and biaxial elongation for the composite containing 10 wt % of TLCP were almost the same as those for the neat styrene‐ethylene butylene‐styrene. The TLCP phase with good fibrillation did not appreciably alter the original yielding characteristics of the elastomer matrix. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We used readily available commercial reagents and well‐known procedures to synthesize a series of aromatic imine mesogenic diglycidylester compounds with dimeric architectures. The compounds obtained were characterized by spectroscopic techniques. Their liquid‐crystalline behavior was examined by differential scanning calorimetry, hot‐stage polarized optical microscopy (POM), and wide‐angle X‐ray scattering (WAXS) and related to the different structures that varied in the length of the central spacer. All the compounds exhibited nematic mesophases with the exception of the dimer with a three‐methylene central spacer that did not reveal liquid‐crystalline character. We investigated the crosslinking of the synthesized compounds and obtained liquid‐crystalline thermosets (LCTs) with several primary aromatic diamines in stoichiometric ratios or a tertiary amine as a catalyst. The curing processes were measured by calorimetry, and the thermal stability of the LCTs was evaluated by thermogravimetry. The ordered character of the LCTs was confirmed by POM and WAXS. Finally, the mechanical characterization of the LCTs obtained was examined by dynamic mechanical thermal analysis. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Terephthaloyl chloride was reacted with 4‐hydroxy benzoic acid to get terephthaloylbis(4‐oxybenzoic) acid, which was characterized and further reacted with epoxy resin [diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA)] to get a liquid‐crystalline epoxy resin (LCEP). This LCEP was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectrometry, 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and polarized optical microscopy (POM). LCEP was then blended in various compositions with DGEBA and cured with a room temperature curing hardener. The cured blends were characterized by DSC and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) for their thermal and viscoelastic properties. The cured blends exhibited higher storage moduli and lower glass‐transition temperatures (tan δmax, from DMA) as compared with that of the pure DGEBA network. The formation of a smectic liquid‐crystalline phase was observed by POM during the curing of LCEP and DGEBA/LCEP blends. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Hydrogen‐bonded aromatic–aliphatic polyester–amides (PEAs) were prepared by solution/melt polycondensation of aromatic–aliphatic amidodiols 1,4‐bis(4‐hydroxybutyramide)benzene (BHBB), 1,4‐bis(5‐hydroxy pentamide)benzene, 1,4‐bis(6‐hydroxyhexamide)benzene, 1,4‐bis(4‐hydroxybutyramidexylene), 1,4‐bis(5‐hydroxypentamidexylene, 1,4‐bis(4‐hydroxybutyramide)benzene, and 1,4‐bis(6‐hydroxyhexamidexylene) with terephthaloyl chloride/dimethyl terephthalate. Aromatic–aliphatic amido diols were prepared by the aminolysis of γ‐butyrolactone, δ‐valerolactone, and ?‐caprolactone with aromatic diamines such as paraphenylene diamine and paraxylene diamine. The monomers and polymers were characterized by chemical analysis (hydroxyl value and elemental analysis), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, 1H NMR, and 13C NMR. The thermal‐ and phase‐transition behaviors of the polymers were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry in combination with hot‐stage optical microscopy. Crystallinity of polymers was examined with wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction. The polymers exhibited liquid crystallinity with layered structures formed by self‐organization of the hetero intermolecular hydrogen‐bonded networks indicating smectic phases except for PEAs prepared from BHBB. The hydrogen atom of the phenyl‐substituent group forces the neighboring carbonyl groups out of plane of the rings preventing formation of layered structures in the case of BHBB. The PEAs retained intermolecular hydrogen bonding even in the mesomorphic state, and variations in the hydrogen‐bonded lamellae/micelles might be responsible for the variations from one smectic to another texture. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Injection‐molded blends composed of two liquid‐crystalline polymers (LCPs) based on 60/40 p‐hydroxybenzoic acid/ethylene terephthalate (R3) and 73/27 p‐hydroxybenzoic acid/2,6‐hydroxynaphthoic acid (VA) copolymers, respectively, were obtained across the whole composition range. The two amorphous phases of the blends contained only slight amounts of the minority component, and the occurrence of some chemical reaction, mainly at high VA contents, was detected by Fourier transform infrared. Synergisms in the modulus of elasticity and in the tensile strength were seen in most of the blend compositions. The largest synergism was in the 50/50 R3/VA blend, which showed a modulus of elasticity 26% higher than that of either of the two components and a 17% positive deviation in the tensile strength with respect to the rule of mixtures. The different orientation of the LCPs in the blends explains the differences in the mechanical behavior. However, contrary to previous works on LCP blends and despite the almost complete immiscibility, the observed negative volume of mixing appears to be the main parameter that determines the synergistic mechanical behavior. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We reacted various dimeric, liquid‐crystalline epoxy–imine monomers, differing in the length of the central aliphatic spacer or the dipolar moments, with heptanedioic acid. The resulting systems showed a liquid‐crystalline phase in some cases, depending on the dimer and on the reaction conditions. The systems were characterized with respect to their mesomorphic properties and then were submitted to dynamic mechanical thermal analysis in both fixed‐frequency and frequency‐sweep modes in the shear sandwich configuration. The arrangement in the liquid‐crystalline phase seemed to be mainly affected both by the polarization of the mesogen and by the reaction temperature, which favored the liquid‐crystalline arrangement when it was lying in the range of stability of the dimer mesophase. In agreement with other recent literature data, dynamic mechanical thermal analysis results suggested that the presence of the mesogen directly incorporated into the main chain increased the lifetimes of the elastic modes both in the isotropic phase and in the liquid‐crystalline phase with respect to side‐chain liquid‐crystalline elastomers and that the time–temperature superposition principle did not hold through the liquid‐crystalline‐to‐isotropic transition. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The solution‐phase behavior of three main‐chain viologen polymers, which are composed of isomeric xylyl units and triflimide as a counterion, was studied in methanol, dimethylformamide, acetonitrile, and dimethyl sulfoxide as solvents microscopically under crossed polarizers. Each of them exhibited a lyotropic lamellar phase in both polar protic and aprotic solvents. Their C* for the formation of biphasic solutions (1–5 wt %) and concentrations (20–30 wt %) for the lyotropic solutions in methanol was much lower than those in polar aprotic solvents (20–71 and 60–81 wt %, respectively). Their high solubility, high C* for the formation of biphasic solutions, and high concentrations for the formation of lyotropic solutions in polar aprotic solvents were related to the significant reduction of strong ionic interactions between triflimide and 4,4′‐bipyridinium ions in each of these viologen polymers. They were the first examples of viologen polymers that exhibited a lyotropic phase in polar aprotic solvents. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We studied the curing processes of several series of dimeric liquid‐crystalline epoxyimine monomers with 2,4‐toluene diisocyanate (TDI) alone or with added catalytic proportions of 4‐(N,N‐dimethylamino)pyridine. We obtained isotropic materials or liquid‐crystalline thermosets with different degrees of order, which depended on the structures of the monomers. To fix ordered networks, we had to do the curing in two steps when TDI was used alone as the curing agent. However, when a tertiary amine was added in catalytic proportions, the ordered networks were fixed in just one step. In this way, we were able to fix both nematic and smectic mesophases. The significance of the polarization of the mesogen for obtaining liquid‐crystalline thermosets was demonstrated. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. New thermotropic liquid crystalline (LC) hyperbranched (HB) polyesters containing 2,5‐diphenyl‐1,3,4‐thiadiazole (DTD) unit as mesogen in the interiors were prepared at various mole ratios (A2/B3) by melt and solution polycondensations of a dioxydiundecanol of DTD (A2) and 1,2,3‐propanetricarboxylic acid (B3) via the A2 + B3 approach and their LC and optical properties were investigated. FTIR and 1H‐NMR spectroscopies indicated that all the expected HB polyesters, which show good solubilities in organic solvents, are produced without gelation during the polymerization. Among them, the HB polymer prepared in the mole ratio of A2/B3 = 3/2 by the solution polycondensation had the highest inherent viscositiy. DSC measurents, polarizing microscope observations of optical textures, and X‐ray analyses suggested that the LC properties of HB polymers depend on the polymerization methods and the feed mole ratios. In the HB polymers prepared using the melt polycondensation, only the polymer prepared in the mole ratio of A2/B3 = 3/1 formed a highly‐ordered, tilted, crystal‐like smectic phase, but all the polymers prepared by the solution polycondensation formed highly‐ordered, tilted, smectic phases. Solution and solid‐state UV‐vis and photoluminescent (PL) spectra indicated that the HB polymers show maximum absorbances and blue‐light emission on the basis of the DTD unit, where the Stokes‐shifts were observed, probably because of intermolecular aggregation effects © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
