The H‐bonding of carbonyl groups on a series of methacrylate polymers with silanols on fumed silica was studied with transmission FTIR. The set included poly(alkyl methacrylates) with alkyl groups, (n‐CnH2n+1) of n = 1, 2, 4, and 12 and poly(benzyl methacrylate). Shifts in the vibrational frequencies for bound carbonyl groups (of ~20 cm?1 lower than those found in the bulk) were observed in the adsorbed polymer samples. A series of samples with different adsorbed amounts (varying from 0.5 to 2.0 mg m?2) of each polymer was prepared to determine the effect of the side chain on the H‐bonding. The fractions of bound carbonyls, p, for each of the methacrylate polymers studied, were calculated from a model based on the ratios of the absorption coefficients of the bound to free carbonyl resonances, X (= αbf). The X values were determined from linear regressions of the ratios of the free to bound carbonyl intensities as a function of the amounts of adsorbed polymer, Mt. The bound fractions, p, were observed to decrease with increase in adsorbed amounts and with increase in the lengths of the side chains of the methacrylate polymers, except for poly(lauryl methacrylate) (PLMA). PLMA has a very low glass transition temperature (Tg) and is likely rubbery on the surface, whereas the other polymers are likely glassy at ambient temperature. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Through the Stille coupling polymerization, a series of soluble acceptor/donor quinoxaline/thiophene alternating conducting polymers with a hole‐transporting moiety of carbazole as a side chain ( PCPQT ) has been designed, synthesized, and investigated. The UV–vis measurement of the charge‐transferred type PCPQT s of different molecular weights with low polydispersity exhibits a red shifting of their absorption maximum from 530 to 630 nm with increasing chain length (Mn: from 1100 to 19,200). The HOMO and LUMO energy levels of PCPQT can be determined from the cyclic voltammetry measurement to be ?5.36 and ?3.59 eV, respectively. Solar cells made from PCPQT/PCBM bulk heterojunction show a high open‐circuit voltage, Voc of ~0.75 V, which is significantly higher than that of a solar cell made from conventional poly(3‐hexyl thiophene)/ PCBM as the active polymer PCPQT has lower HOMO level. Further improvements are anticipated through a rational design of the new low band‐gap and the structurally two‐dimensional donor–acceptor conducting polymers. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Polyaddition of an α‐azide‐ω‐alkyne monomer by Cu(PPh3)3Br catalyzed 1,3‐dipolar cycloaddition was thoroughly studied as a model system to investigate the orthogonality of this click chemistry process. Indeed, loss of chain‐end functionality and occurrence of side reactions have a tremendous impact on the molar mass of polymers obtained by step growth polymerization. Particularly, SEC, 1H, and 31P NMR experiments have highlighted the occurrence of a Staudinger side‐reaction between azide chain‐ends and PPh3 from the copper(I) catalyst that dramatically alters Mn of the resulting polytriazoles. A significant enhancement of Mn could be achieved by using an alternative catalyst and optimized experimental conditions, that is, dilution and reaction time. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A terpyridine‐functionalized alkoxyamine unimolecular initiator was used for the nitroxide‐mediated controlled living radical polymerization of n‐butylacrylate, N,N‐dimethylacrylamide, 4‐vinylpyridine, 2‐vinylpyridine, and isoprene. For the former three monomers, the kinetics were studied. All polymerizations resulted in well‐defined polymers having a single terpyridine ligand at the chain end and narrow polydispersity indices. The obtained polymers are valuable building blocks for metallo‐supramolecular polymers. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 43: 6331–6344, 2005  相似文献

Liquid crystalline block copolymers (LCBCPs) are fascinating for their combining molecular level liquid crystalline orders and microphase separated multidomain morphologies. Here in this article, a series of PEG‐containing side‐chain discotic LCBCPs of PEG‐bPmn with variant spacer length m = 6, 10 and degree of polymerization (DP) of discotic LC block from n = 10 to 45, have been well‐synthesized via reversible addition‐fragmentation chain‐transfer (RAFT) polymerization. The RAFT process mediated by macromolecular chain transfer agent (macroCTA) shows remarkable monomer concentration dependence. The influence of the introduced PEG block on the nano‐scale microphase‐segregation and mesophase organization is closely related to the side‐chain triphenylene (TP) discogens stacking mode dependent on the spacer length. Wherein, the PEG‐bP6n series with a six‐methylene spacer exhibit consistent microphase separation with slightly disturbed yet ordered columnar structures. While for PEG‐bP10n series with a longer ten‐methylene spacer, the columnar organization in the copolymers is even improved in contrast with the low order of randomly TP stacking in their corresponding homopolymers. This work offers a viable and inspiring pathway for controlled synthesis of block copolymers with bulky side groups, as well as enhances in‐depth understanding of the hierarchical superstructure organization in discotic units involved complex block copolymers. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of comb‐type polycarbosilanes of the type [Si(CH3)(OR)CH2]n {where R = (CH2)mR′, R′ = ? O‐p‐biphenyl? X [X = H (m = 3, 6, 8, or 11) or CN (m = 11)], and R′ = (CF2)7CF3 (m = 4)} were prepared from poly(chloromethylsilylenemethylene) by reactions with the respective hydroxy‐terminated side chains in the presence of triethylamine. The product side‐chain polymers were typically greater than 90% substituted and, for R′ = ? O‐p‐biphenyl? X derivatives, they exhibited phase transitions between 27 and 150 °C involving both crystalline and liquid‐crystalline phases. The introduction of the polar p‐CN substituent to the biphenyl mesogen resulted in a substantial increase in both the isotropization temperature and the liquid‐crystalline phase range with respect to the corresponding unsubstituted biphenyl derivative. For R = (CH2)11? O‐biphenyl side chains, an analogous side‐chain liquid‐crystalline (SCLC) polysiloxane derivative of the type [Si(CH3)(O(CH2)11? O‐biphenyl)O]n was prepared by means of a catalytic dehydrogenation reaction. In contrast to the polycarbosilane bearing the same side chain, this polymer did not exhibit any liquid‐crystalline phases but melted directly from a crystalline phase to an isotropic liquid at 94 °C. Similar behavior was observed for the polycarbosilane with a fluorocarbon chain, for which a single transition from a crystalline phase to an isotropic liquid was observed at ?0.7 °C. The molecular structures of these polymers were characterized by means of gel permeation chromatography and high‐resolution NMR studies, and the crystalline and liquid‐crystalline phases of the SCLC polymers were identified by differential scanning calorimetry, polarized optical microscopy, and X‐ray diffraction. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of novel soluble polythiophene derivatives containing triphenylamine moiety were synthesized by Grignard metathesis (GRIM) method. The structures of the polymers were characterized and their physical properties were investigated. High molecular weight (Mn up to 25,800 g/mol) and thermostable polymers were obtained. The absorption spectra demonstrated that the absorption wavelength of the polymers could be tuned dramatically by introducing thiophene units in the main chain of the polymers. Photoluminescence spectra indicated that there was intramolecular energy transfer from the side chain to the main chain, and the maximum emission was red‐shifted gradually with the increase of thiophene units in the main chain. Cyclic voltammetry displayed that the polymers possessed relatively high oxidation potential, which promised good air stability and high open circuit voltage for photovoltaic cells application. Finally, bulk heterojunction photovoltaic devices were fabricated by using the polymers as donors and (6,6)‐phenyl C61‐butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) as acceptor. The maximal open circuit voltage of the photovoltaic cells reached 0.71–0.87 V and the power conversion efficiencies of the devices were measured between 0.014% and 0.45% under white light at 100 mW/cm2. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Developing new materials with unique properties for nanotechnology applications, in general, and supramolecular polymers, in particular, lie at the heart of much ongoing research. In line with these efforts, we have been exploring polymers containing terpyridine (terpy) in the side chain. Here we report a new monomer that effectively undergoes reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer polymerization (RAFT) to yield high‐molecular‐weight (Mn) polymers with narrow polydispersity (PDI). The monomer is an N‐succinimide activated ester of p‐vinyl benzoic acid. Under RAFT conditions, poly(N‐succinimide p‐vinylbenzoate)s were generated, with Mn ranging between 44 and 61 kDa and PDI of 1.03–1.07. One of these homopolymers was reacted with an amine functionalized terpy, creating a new homopolymer containing terpy ligands on every monomer. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of side‐chain liquid‐crystal polymers, poly[6‐[4‐(4′‐n‐alkyl benzoateazo)phenoxy]‐hexylmethacrylate]s (PMAzoCOORm, m = 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, 14, and 18) have been prepared by two synthetic methods. The chemical structure of the monomers was confirmed by 1H NMR and mass spectrometry. The molecular characterizations of the polymers were performed with 1H NMR and gel permeation chromatograph. The phase behaviors of polymers were investigated by the combination of techniques including differential scanning calorimetry, polarized optical microscopy, and small‐angle X‐ray scattering. For m = 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6, the polymers exhibited a monosmectic A phase in which the smectic layer period was almost identical to the side‐chain length. In addition, for m = 2, 3, 4, and 5, they presented the monosmectic C phase in low temperature; moreover, the tilt angle increased from 23.3 to 40.5°. For m = 8, 10, 14, and 18, the polymers showed a bilayer smectic A phase in which the layer spacing was larger than a fully extended side chain but less than two extended chains. On the other hand, for the clearing point, with the increasing of m, it first decreased, and then increased. All of these indicated that the length of alkyl tails played an important role in the phase behaviors of these polymers. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. A series of OEGylated poly(γ‐benzyl‐l ‐glutamate) with different oligo‐ethylene‐glycol side‐chain length, molecular weight (MW = 8.4 × 103 to 13.5 × 104) and narrow molecular weight distribution (PDI = 1.12–1.19) can be readily prepared from triethylamine initiated ring‐opening polymerization of OEGylated γ‐benzyl‐l ‐glutamic acid based N‐carboxyanhydride. FTIR analysis revealed that the polymers adopted α‐helical conformation in the solid‐state. While they showed poor solubility in water, they exhibited a reversible upper critical solution temperature (UCST)‐type phase behavior in various alcoholic organic solvents (i.e., methanol, ethanol, 1‐propanol, 1‐butanol, 1‐pentanol, and isopropanol). Variable‐temperature UV–vis analysis revealed that the UCST‐type transition temperatures (Tpts) of the resulting polymers were highly dependent on the type of solvent, polymer concentration, side‐ and main‐chain length. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. For the synthesis of aromatic polyesters with defined molecular weights and narrow molecular weight distributions (MWDs), we investigated the chain‐growth polycondensation of active amide derivatives of 4‐hydroxybenzoic acid, 1a and 1b , having an octyl or 4,7‐dioxaoctyl side chain, respectively. To suppress the transesterification of the polymer backbone with the monomer, the polymerization of 1 was carried out in tetrahydrofuran (THF) at −30 °C in the presence of initiator 2 and Et3SiH/CsF/18‐crown‐6, which generated a hydride ion as a base in situ. The number‐average molecular weight (Mn) of poly 1a was controlled, and narrow MWDs were maintained, until the [ 1a ]0/[ 2 ]0 feed ratio was 14.3 (Mn ≤ 3500), whereas that of poly 1b was controlled until the feed ratio was 30 (Mn ≤ 7250). The difference stemmed from the higher solubility of poly 1b in THF. This chain‐growth polycondensation was applied to the synthesis of a diblock copolyester of 1a and 1b of a defined architecture. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. π‐Conjugated polymers, PTOTBT , PTEHTBT , and PTt‐BTBT , composed of benzothiadiazole as an electron accepting unit and terthiophene as an electron donating unit in the backbone were prepared. PTOTBT , PTEHTBT , and PTt‐BTBT contained side chain groups of n‐octyl, 2‐ethylhexyl, and t‐butyl groups, respectively. Solubility, optical and thermal properties of the polymers showed strong dependences on their side chain groups. PTEHTBT having 2‐ethylhexyl groups in the side chain exhibited absorption maximum (λmax) at longer wavelength (565 nm) than PTOTBT (534 nm) and PTt‐BTBT (495 nm). PTOTBT showed higher thermal stability than the others. The prepared polymers were employed to polymer solar cells (PSCs) with a configuration of ITO/PEDOT‐PSS/polymer: PC61BH/LiF/Al. Power conversion efficiency of the PSC‐based on PTEHTBT was 1.32%. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem, 2011  相似文献

Fluorinated alcohols were used as surface modifying agents, through chain transfer mechanism in cationic UV curing of an epoxy system. The fluorinated alcohols were able to induce surface modification already at very low concentration (below 1 wt %). It has been shown that the surface modification depended on the concentration of the fluoroalcohols, on the length of the fluoroalkyl chain, and on the length of the methylene spacer between the fluorinated chain and the OH group. The strong increase on hydrophobicity in the presence of the synthesized fluorinated alcohol, CF3(CF2)9(CH2)10OH, was attributed to the higher fluorocontent of the chain as well as to a self‐organization effect. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Herein, we investigate the influence of spacer length on the homoassociation and heteroassociation of end‐functionalized hydrogen‐bonding polymers based on poly(n‐butyl acrylate). Two monofunctional ureido‐pyrimidinone (UPy) end‐functionalized polymers were prepared by atom transfer radical polymerization using self‐complementary UPy‐functional initiators that differ in the spacer length between the multiple‐hydrogen‐bonding group and the chain initiation site. The self‐complementary binding strength (Kdim) of these end‐functionalized polymers was shown to depend critically on the spacer length as evident from 1H NMR and diffusion‐ordered spectroscopy. In addition, the heteroassociation strength of the end‐functionalized UPy polymers with end‐functionalized polymers containing the complementary 2,7‐diamido‐1,8‐naphthyridine (NaPy) hydrogen‐bond motif is also affected when the aliphatic spacer length is too short. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The conformational characteristics of a comb‐like side‐chain liquid crystal polysiloxane (SCLCP), dissolved in deuterated chloroform, were evaluated by small‐angle neutron scattering (SANS) measurements over a wide q range. SANS studies were carried out on specimens with constant backbone length (DP = 198) and variable spacer length (n = 3, 5, and 11), and with constant spacer length (n = 5) and variable DP (45, 72, 127, and 198). The form factor P(q) at high q was analyzed using the wormlike chain model with finite cross‐sectional thickness (Rc) and taking into account the molecular weight polydispersity. The analysis generated values of persistence length in the range lp = 28–32 Å, considerably larger than that of the unsubstituted polysiloxane chain (lp = 5.8 Å), with contour lengths per monomer comparable to the fully‐extended polysiloxane backbone (lm = 2.9 Å). This indicates a relatively rigid SCLCP chain due to the influence of the densely attached mesogenic groups. The SCLCP with n = 11 is more flexible (lp = 28 Å) than those with n = 3 and n = 5 (lp = 32 Å). The cross‐sectional thickness increases with spacer length, Rcn0.21±0.02 (3 ≤ n ≤ 11), and the contour length per monomer decreases with increasing spacer length, lmn?0.35±0.01. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Poly(2‐alkyl‐2‐oxazoline)s (PAOx) exhibit different crystallization behavior depending on the length of the alkyl side chain. PAOx having methyl, ethyl, or propyl side chains do not show any bulk crystallization. Crystallization in the heating cycle, that is, cold crystallization, is observed for PAOx with butyl and pentyl side chains. For PAOx with longer alkyl side chains crystallization occurs in the cooling cycle. The different crystallization behavior is attributed to the different polymer chain mobility in line with the glass transition temperature (Tg) dependency on alkyl side chain length. The decrease in chain mobility with decreasing alkyl side chain length hinders the relaxation of the polymer backbone to the thermodynamic equilibrium crystalline structure. Double melting behavior is observed for PButOx and PiPropOx which is explained by the melt‐recrystallization mechanism. Isothermal crystallization experiments of PButOx between 60 and 90 °C and PiPropOx between 90 and 150 °C show that PAOx can crystallize in bulk when enough time is given. The decrease of Tg and the corresponding increase in chain mobility at T > Tg with increasing alkyl side chain length can be attributed to an increasing distance between the polymer backbones and thus decreasing average strength of amide dipole interactions. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. When the flexible terminal substituent changes from butoxy to hexyloxy or longer, smectic C (SC) liquid crystalline phase was firstly reported to develop from a kind of mesogen‐jacketed liquid crystalline polymer (MJLCP) whose mesogenic side groups are unbalancedly bonded to the main chain without spacers. A series of MJLCPs, poly[4,4′‐bis(4‐alkoxyphenyl)‐2‐vinylbiphenyl(carboxide)] (nC2Vp, n is the number of the carbons in the alkoxy groups, n = 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, and 12) were designed and synthesized successfully via free radical polymerization. The molecular weights of the polymers were characterized with gel permeation chromatography, and the liquid crystalline properties were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry, polarized light microscopy experiments, and 1D, 2D wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction. Comparing with the butoxy analog, the polymer with unbalanced mesogenic core and shorter flexible substituents (n = 2, 4) keeps the same smectic A (SA) phase, but other polymers with longer terminal flexible substituents (n = 6, 8, 10, and 12) can develop into a well‐defined SC phase instead of SA phase. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The orientation of the side‐chain liquid‐crystalline polymers (LCP) containing phenylbenzoate mesogenic groups in the magnetic field was examined with 2H NMR spectroscopy. The influence of the degree of polymerization as well as the length of the methylene tail group (n = 1–4) have been established. The decrease of the order parameter S of the LCPs with an increased length of the tail group was found. The order parameter S of LCPs does not depend on the degree of polymerization. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 40: 2044–2048, 2002  相似文献

Hydrosilylation of olefin groups at poly(ethylene glycol) chain ends catalyzed by Karstedt catalyst often results in undesired side reactions such as olefin isomerization, hydrogenation, and dehydrosilylation. Since unwanted polymers obtained by side reactions deteriorate the quality of end‐functional polymers, maximizing the hydrosilylation efficiency at polymer chain ends becomes crucial. After careful investigation of the factors that govern side reactions under various conditions, it was related that the short lifetime of the unstable Pt catalyst intermediate led to the formation of more side products under the inherently dilute conditions for polymers. Based on these results, two new chelating hydrosilylation reagents, tris(2‐methoxyethoxy)silane (5) and 2,10‐dimethyl‐3,6,9‐trioxa‐2,10‐disilaundecane (6), have been developed. It was demonstrated that the hydrosilylation efficiency at polymer chain ends was significantly increased by employing the internally coordinating hydrosilane 5. In addition, employment of the internally coordinating disilane species 6 in an addition polymerization with 1,5‐hexadiene by hydrosilylation reaction yielded a polymer with high molecular weight (Mn = 9300 g/mol), which was significantly higher than that (Mn = 2600 g/mol) of the corresponding polymer obtained with non‐chelating dihydrosilane, 1,1,3,3‐tetramethyldisiloxane. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The synthesis and characterization of novel first‐ and second‐generation true dendritic reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) agents carrying 6 or 12 pendant 3‐benzylsulfanylthiocarbonylsulfanylpropionic acid RAFT end groups with Z‐group architecture based on 1,1,1‐hydroxyphenyl ethane and trimethylolpropane cores are described in detail. The multifunctional dendritic RAFT agents have been used to prepare star polymers of poly(butyl acrylate) (PBA) and polystyrene (PS) of narrow polydispersities (1.4 < polydispersity index < 1.1 for PBA and 1.5 < polydispersity index < 1.3 for PS) via bulk free‐radical polymerization at 60 °C. The novel dendrimer‐based multifunctional RAFT agents effect an efficient living polymerization process, as evidenced by the linear evolution of the number‐average molecular weight (Mn) with the monomer–polymer conversion, yielding star polymers with molecular weights of up to Mn = 160,000 g mol?1 for PBA (based on a linear PBA calibration) and up to Mn = 70,000 g mol?1 for PS (based on a linear PS calibration). A structural change in the chemical nature of the dendritic core (i.e., 1,1,1‐hydroxyphenyl ethane vs trimethylolpropane) has no influence on the observed molecular weight distributions. The star‐shaped structure of the generated polymers has been confirmed through the cleavage of the pendant arms off the core of the star‐shaped polymeric materials. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
