This communication reports the development of an efficient three‐component visible light sensitive photoinitiator system for the cationic ring‐opening photopolymerization of epoxide monomers and epoxide functional oligomers. The photoinitiator system consists of camphorquinone in combination with a benzyl alcohol to generate free radicals by the absorption of visible light. Subsequently, the radicals participate in the free radical chain induced decomposition of a diaryliodonium salt. The resulting strong Brønsted acid derived from this process catalyzes the cationic ring‐opening polymerization of a variety of epoxide substrates. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Three‐component initiators generally include a light‐absorbing photosensitizer, an electron donor that is often an amine, and the third component, which is usually an iodonium salt. To characterize the role of diphenyl iodonium chloride (DPI) in three‐component photoinitiator systems containing methylene blue (MB) as the photosensitizer, a systematic series of electron donors was used. The Rhem–Weller equation was used to verify the thermodynamic feasibility for photo‐induced electron transfer from the electron donors to the MB. Comparison of the photopolymerization rates of each two‐component initiator system (containing the photosensitizer and amine) to those of the corresponding three‐component system (with the addition of (DPI) allowed fundamental information regarding the role of the DPI to be obtained. It was concluded that the DPI enhances the photopolymerization kinetics in two ways: (1) it consumes an inactive MB neutral radical and produces an active phenyl radical, thereby regenerating the original methylene blue, and (2) it reduces the recombination reaction of the MB neutral radical and amine radical/cation. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Silyl glyoxylates are proposed here as high‐performance photoinitiators (PIs) for the hybrid polymerization of cationic and radical monomers. Recently, silyl glyoxylates were reported as a new class of high‐performance Type I photoinitiators for free radical polymerization under air upon exposure to different near‐UV and blue LEDs. In this article, we report this new class of photoinitiators to initiate cationic polymerization in combination with an iodonium salt. This system can also be used to initiate simultaneously free radical and cationic polymerizations, for example, for the free radical/cationic hybrid polymerization and for the synthesis of interpenetrating polymer networks. The system silyl glyoxylate/iodonium exhibits excellent polymerization performances and exceptional bleaching properties compared to other well established photoinitiators (e.g., camphorquinone). Furthermore, a hybrid monomer is also introduced in this article (2‐vinyloxyethoxyethyl methacrylate [VEEM]) leading to a huge improvement of the mechanical properties of the final polymer through hybrid polymerization. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A range of novel cationic star‐like polymers (Star‐P(MeDMA)s) were synthesized through atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) by core‐first method, using a β‐cyclodextrin initiator with 21 initiation sites (21Br‐β‐CD). Methyl chloride‐quaternized 2‐(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate (MeDMA) was polymerized in an aqueous medium using 21Br‐β‐CD, Cu(I)Br, and 2,2′‐dipyridyl as an initiator, catalyst, and ligand, respectively. The effects of polymerization temperature and monomer/initiator ratios on the degree and kinetics of polymerization were investigated. The molecular weights, hydrodynamic sizes, and charge densities of the quaternized polymers were characterized using gel permeation chromatography (GPC), dynamic light scattering (DLS), and colloidal titration, respectively. The results demonstrated that the moderate aqueous solubility of the 21Br‐β‐CD initiator had significant impact on the physicochemical properties of the obtained star polymers. The polymerization of 500/1/2/5 ([M]0/[I]0/[Cu(I)0/[L]0]) at 90 °C for 6 h was found to be the best condition to synthesize the proposed cationic star polymer with well‐defined structures in aqueous medium. The nonlinear relationship between the apparent charge density and the particle size of the cationic star polymers was further revealed by GPC and DLS measurements. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. New systems for the visible‐light‐induced polymerization of cationic resins working through a free‐radical‐promoted process are presented. They are based on a photoinitiator (camphorquinone, isopropylthioxanthone, Eosin), a silane, and a diphenyl iodonium salt, the new compound being the silane. The overall efficiency is strongly affected by the silane structure. The rates of polymerization and final percent conversion are noticeably higher than those obtained in the presence of already studied reference systems. Moreover, contrary to previously investigated free‐radical‐promoted cationic polymerizations, oxygen does not inhibit the process and an unusual enhancement of the polymerization kinetics is found in aerated conditions: such an observation seems to have never been reported so far. The excited state processes and the role of oxygen as revealed by laser flash photolysis are discussed. The particular behavior of the silyl radicals is outlined. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of superhydrophobic poly(methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane, MPTS‐b‐2,‐2,3,3,4,4,4‐heptafluorobutyl methacrylate, HFBMA)‐grafted silica hybrid nanoparticles (SiO2/PMPTS‐b‐PHFBMA) were prepared by two‐step surface‐initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (SI‐ATRP). Under the adopted polymerization conditions in our previous work, the superhydrophobic property was found to depend on the SI‐ATRP conditions of HFBMA. As a series of work, in this present study, the effects of polymerization conditions, such as the initiator concentration, the molar ratio of monomer and initiator, and the polymerization temperature on the SI‐ATRP kinetics and the interrelation between the kinetics and the surface properties of the nanoparticles were investigated. The results showed that the SI‐ATRP of HFBMA was well controlled. The results also showed that both the surface microphase separation and roughness of the hybrid nanoparticles could be strengthened with the increase of the molecular weight of polymer‐grafted silica hybrid nanoparticles. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of poly(amino (meth)acrylate) brushes, poly(2‐(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate) (PDMAEMA), poly(2‐(diethylamino)ethyl methacrylate) (PDEAEMA), poly(2‐(dimethylamino)ethyl acrylate) (PDMAEA), poly(2‐(tert‐butylamino)ethyl methacrylate) (PTBAEMA), has been synthesized via surface‐confined controlled/living radical polymerizations using surface‐confined initiator from silane self‐assembled monolayers (SAMs) on silicon (Si) wafer substrates. Chemical methods and efficacies for two types of living radical polymerization, atom transfer radical (ATRP) and single electron transfer (SET‐LRP), are described and contrasted for the surface confined polymerization of poly(amino (meth)acrylate)s. Effects of solvent, catalyst/ligand system, and temperature on polymerization success were examined. Chemical compositions after each reaction step were characterized with FTIR spectroscopy, contact angle goniometry, and X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy while the SAM and polymer brush thicknesses were measured with spectroscopic ellipsometry. For the first time, this study demonstrates successful surface‐confined polymerization of a series of poly(amine (meth)acrylate) brushes from Si‐SAM substrates using a copper metal electron donor catalyst. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A benzophenone‐naphthalimide derivative (BPND) bearing tertiary amine groups has been developed as a high‐performance photoinitiator in combination with 2,4,6‐tris(trichloromethyl)‐1,3,5‐triazine or an iodonium salt for both the free radical polymerization (FRP) of acrylates and the cationic polymerization (CP) of epoxides upon exposure to near UV and visible LEDs (385–470 nm). BPND can even produce radicals without any added hydrogen donor. The photochemical mechanisms are studied by molecular orbital calculations, steady state photolysis, electron spin resonance spin trapping, fluorescence, cyclic voltammetry and laser flash photolysis techniques. These novel BPND based photoinitiating systems exhibit an efficiency higher than that of the well‐known camphorquinone‐based systems (FRP and CP) or comparable to that of bis(2,4,6‐trimethylbenzoyl)‐phenylphosphineoxide (FRP at λ ≤ 455 nm). © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of kinetic experiments were conducted involving visible‐light activated free radical polymerizations with three‐component photoinitiators and 2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA). Three‐component photoinitiator systems generally include a light‐absorbing photosensitizer (PS), an electron donor and an electron acceptor. To compare kinetic efficiency, we used thermodynamic feasibility and measured kinetic data. For this study, 5,10,15,20‐tetraphenyl‐21H,23H‐porphyrin zinc (Zn‐tpp) and camphorquinone (CQ) were used as the PSs. The Rehm‐Weller equation was used to verify the thermodynamic feasibility for the photo‐induced electron transfer reaction. Using the thermodynamic feasibility, we suggest two different kinetic mechanisms, which are (i) photo‐reducible series mechanism of CQ and (ii) photo‐oxidizable series mechanism of Zn‐tpp. Kinetic data were measured by near‐IR spectroscopy and photo‐differential scanning calorimetry based on an equivalent concentration of excited state PS. We report that the photo‐oxidizable series mechanism using Zn‐tpp produced dramatically enhanced conversions and rates of polymerizations compared with those associated with the photo‐reducible series mechanism using CQ. It was concluded from the kinetic results that the photo‐oxidizable series mechanism efficiently retards back electron transfer and the recombination reaction step. In addition, the photo‐oxidizable series mechanism provides an efficient secondary reaction step that involves consumption of the dye‐based radical and regeneration of the original PS. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Cu(0)‐mediated living radical polymerization was first extended to acrylonitrile (AN) to synthesize polyacrylonitrile with a high molecular weight and a low polydispersity index. This was achieved by using Cu(0)/hexamethylated tris(2‐aminoethyl)amine (Me6‐TREN) as the catalyst, 2‐bromopropionitrile as the initiator, and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) as the solvent. The reaction was performed under mild reaction conditions at ambient temperature and thus biradical termination reaction was low. The rapid and extensive disproportionation of Cu(I)Br/Me6‐TREN in DMSO/AN supports a mechanism consistent with a single electron transfer‐living radical polymerization (SET‐LRP) rather than activators generated by electron transfer atom transfer radical polymerization (AGET ATRP). 1H NMR analysis and chain extension experiment confirm the high chain‐end functionality of the resultant polymer. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. For the first time, ligand‐free Cu(0)‐mediated polymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) was realized by the selection of ethyl‐2‐bromo‐2‐phenylacetate as initiator at ambient temperature. The polymerization can reach up to 90% conversion within 5 h with dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) as solvent, while keeping manners of the controlled radical polymerization. Extensive investigation of this system revealed that for a well‐controlled Cu(0)‐mediated polymerization of MMA, the initiator should be selected with the structure as alkyl 2‐bromo‐2‐phenylacetate, and the solvent should be DMSO or N,N‐dimethylformamide. The selectivity for solvents indicated a typical single‐electron transfer‐living radical polymerization process. Scanning for other monomers indicated that under equal conditions, the polymerizations of other alkyl (meth)acrylates were uncontrollable. Based on these results, plausible reasons were discussed. The ligand‐free Cu(0)‐mediated polymerization showed its superiority with economical components and needless removal of Cu species from the resultant products. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Polystyrene (PSt) with end‐terminal bromine (Br‐PSt‐Br) was synthesized by the atom transfer radical polymerization of styrene with the difunctional initiator 1,2‐bis(2′‐bromobutyryloxy)ethane in combination with CuBr and bipyridine. The Br‐PSt‐Br reacted with silver perchlorate at −78 °C, and the resulting macromolecular initiator was used to initiate the polymerization of tetrahydrofuran. Triblock poly(tetrahydrofuran)‐polystyrene‐poly(tetrahydrofuran) (PTHF‐PSt‐PTHF) diol was obtained after propagation at −15 °C. The conversion of the polymerization was measured by gas chromatography. The structures of the triblock copolymer PTHF‐PSt‐PTHF diol were characterized by 1H NMR and gel permeation chromatography. The mechanism of cationic ring‐opening polymerization is discussed. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci A: Polym Chem 38: 337–344, 2000  相似文献

New three‐component photoinitiating systems consisting of a cyanine dye, borate salt, and a 1,3,5‐triazine derivative were investigated by measuring their photoinitiation activities and through fluorescence quenching experiments. Polymerization kinetic studies based on the microcalorimetric method revealed a significant increase in polymerization rate when the concentration of n‐butyltriphenylborate salt or the 1,3,5‐triazine derivative were increased. The photo‐induced electron transfer process between electron donor and electron acceptor was studied by means of fluorescence quenching and SrEt change of the fluorescence intensity. The experiments performed documented that an increase of the n‐butyltriphenylborate salt concentration dramatically increases the rate of dye fluorescence quenching, whereas the increasing of the 1,3,5‐triazine derivative concentration slows down the consumption of the dye. We conclude that the primary photochemical reaction involves an electron transfer from the n‐butyltriphenylborate anion to the excited singlet state of the dye, followed by the reaction of the 1,3,5‐triazine derivative with the resulting dye radical to regenerate the original dye. This reaction simultaneously produces a triazinyl radical anion derived from the 1,3,5‐triazine, which undergoes the carbon‐halogen bond cleavage yielding radicals active in initiation of a free radical polymerization chain. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Surface‐confined atom transfer radical polymerization was used to prepare gold nanoparticle–poly(methyl methacrylate) core–shell particles at elevated temperature. First, gold nanoparticles were prepared by the one‐pot borohydride reduction of tetrachloroaurate in the presence of 11‐mercapto‐1‐undecanol (MUD). MUD‐capped gold nanoparticles were then exchanged with 3‐mercaptopropyltrimethoxysilane (MPS) to prepare a self‐assembled monolayer (SAM) of MPS on the gold nanoparticle surfaces and subsequently hydrolyzed with hydrochloric acid. The extent of exchange of MUD with MPS was determined by NMR. The resulting crosslinked silica‐primer layer stabilized the SAM of MPS and was allowed to react with the initiator [(chloromethyl)phenylethyl] trimethoxysilane. Atom transfer radical polymerization was conducted on the Cl‐terminated gold nanoparticles with the CuCl/2,2′‐bipyridyl catalyst system at elevated temperature. The rates of polymerization with the initiator‐modified gold nanoparticles exhibited first‐order kinetics with respect to the monomer, and the number‐average molecular weight of the cleaved graft polymer increased linearly with the monomer conversion. The presence of the polymer on the gold nanoparticle surface was identified by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Covalently bonded layered silicated/polystyrene nanocomposites were synthesized via atom transfer radical polymerization in the presence of initiator‐modified layered silicate. The resulting nanocomposites had an intercalated and partially exfoliated structure, as confirmed by X‐ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. The thermal properties of the nanocomposites improved substantially over those of neat polystyrene. In particular, a maximum increase of 35.5 °C in the degradation temperature was displayed by these nanocomposites. Additionally, the surface elastic modulus and hardness of these nanocomposites were more than double those of pure polystyrene. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. By combining frontal polymerization and radical‐induced cationic polymerization, it was possible to cure thick samples of an epoxy monomer bleached by UV light. The effect of the relative amounts of cationic photoinitiator and radical initiator was thoroughly investigated and was related to the front's velocity and its maximum temperature. The materials obtained were characterized by quantitative conversion also in the deeper layers, not reached by UV light. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The reverse atom‐transfer radical polymerization (RATRP) technique using CuCl2/2,2′‐bipyridine (bipy) complex as a catalyst was applied to the living radical polymerization of acrylonitrile (AN). A hexasubstituted ethane thermal iniferter, diethyl 2,3‐dicyano‐2,3‐diphenylsuccinate (DCDPS), was firstly used as the initiator in this copper‐based RATRP initiation system. A CuCl2 to bipy ratio of 0.5 not only gives the best control of molecular weight and its distribution, but also provides rather rapid reaction rate. The rate of polymerization increases with increasing the polymerization temperature, and the apparent activation energy was calculated to be 57.4 kJ mol?1. Because the polymers obtained were end‐functionalized by chlorine atoms, they were used as macroinitiators to proceed the chain extension polymerization in the presence of CuCl/bipy catalyst system via a conventional ATRP process. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. An efficient and novel one‐pot process is developed to immobilize the atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) initiators onto the surface of fully pyrolyzed carbon hard spheres (CHSs) via a radical trapping process from the in situ thermal decomposition of bis(bromomethylbenzoyl)peroxide. The CHSs do not require any additional preparative treatment prior to the initiator immobilization. Styrene and methyl methacrylate are polymerized onto initiator‐immobilized CHSs by surface‐initiated atomic transfer radical polymerization (SI‐ATRP). Samples are characterized using Fourier transform infrared, thermogravimetric analysis, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. These methods of characterization confirmed that all the CHSs are coated with a uniform layer of grafted polymer. This efficient, one‐pot immobilization of ATRP‐initiators represents an exceptionally simple route for the rapid preparation of various polymer‐coated carbon‐based nanomaterials using SI‐ATRP. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Naphthalimide‐phthalimide derivatives (NDPDs) have been synthesized and combined with an iodonium salt, N‐vinylcarbazole, amine or 2,4,6‐tris(trichloromethyl)‐1,3,5‐triazine to produce reactive species (i.e., radicals and cations). These generated reactive species are capable of initiating the cationic polymerization of epoxides and/or the radical polymerization of acrylates upon exposure to very soft polychromatic visible lights or blue lights. Compared with the well‐known camphorquinone based systems used as references, the novel NDPD based combinations employed here demonstrate clearly higher efficiencies for the cationic polymerization of epoxides under air as well as the radical polymerization of acrylates. Remarkably, one of the NDPDs (i.e., NDPD2) based systems is characterized by an outstanding reactivity. The structure/reactivity/efficiency relationships of the investigated NDPDs were studied by fluorescence, cyclic voltammetry, laser flash photolysis, electron spin resonance spin trapping, and steady state photolysis techniques. The key parameters for their reactivity are provided. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. Chem. 2015 , 53, 665–674  相似文献

Monodisperse polystyrene microspheres with diameters of 200–500 nm were prepared by dispersion polymerization with microwave irradiation with poly(N‐vinylpyrrolidone) as a steric stabilizer and 2,2′‐azobisisobutyronitrile as a radical initiator in an ethanol/water medium. The morphology, size, and size distribution of the polystyrene microspheres were characterized with transmission electron microscopy and photon correlation spectroscopy, and the formed films of the polystyrene dispersions were characterized with atomic force microscopy. The effects of the monomer concentration, stabilizer concentration, and initiator concentration on the size and size distribution of the polystyrene microspheres were investigated. The polystyrene microspheres prepared by dispersion polymerization with microwave irradiation were smaller, more uniform, and steadier than those obtained with conventional heating. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
