The following block–comb/graft copolymers of styrene (S), isoprene (I), and butadiene (B)—PS‐b‐(PB‐g‐PB), PS‐b‐(PB‐g‐PB)‐b‐PS, (PB‐g‐PB)‐b‐P2VP, (PS‐g‐PB)‐b‐(PI‐g‐PS), (PS‐g‐PB)‐b‐(PI‐g‐PS)‐b‐(PB‐g‐PI), (PS‐g‐PB)‐b‐(PI‐g‐PS)‐b‐(PB‐g‐PI)‐b‐(PI‐g‐PS)‐b‐(PS‐g‐PB), and (PS)2(PB‐g‐PB) [where PS is polystyrene, PB is polybutadiene, P2VP is poly(2‐vinylpyridine) (2VP), and PI is polyisoprene]—were synthesized with the macromonomer strategy and anionic polymerization high‐vacuum techniques. The synthetic approach involves the synthesis and block copolymerization of styrenic macromonomers in situ without isolation. The prepared samples were characterized by size exclusion chromatography with a differential refractometer detector, size exclusion chromatography with a two‐angle laser light scattering detector, and NMR spectroscopy. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Well‐defined ω‐cholesteryl poly(n‐hexyl isocyanate) (PHIC–Chol), as well as diblock copolymers of n‐hexyl isocyanate (HIC) with styrene, PS‐b‐PHIC [PS = polystyrene; PHIC = poly(n‐hexyl isocyanate)], and triblock terpolymers with styrene and isoprene, PS‐b‐PI‐b‐PHIC and PI‐b‐PS‐b‐PHIC (PI = polyisoprene), were synthesized with CpTiCl2(OR) (R = cholesteryl group, PS, or PS‐b‐PI) complexes. The synthetic strategy involved the reaction of the precursor complex CpTiCl3 with cholesterol or the suitable ω‐hydroxy homopolymer or block copolymer, followed by the polymerization of HIC. The ω‐hydroxy polymers were prepared by the anionic polymerization of the corresponding monomers and the reaction of the living chains with ethylene oxide. The reaction sequence was monitored by size exclusion chromatography, and the final products were characterized by size exclusion chromatography (light scattering and refractive‐index detectors), nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, and, in the case of PHIC–Chol, differential scanning calorimetry. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Cationic emulsions of triblock copolymer particles comprising a poly(n‐butyl acrylate) (PnBA) central block and polystyrene (PS) outer blocks were synthesized by activator generated by electron transfer (AGET) atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). Difunctional ATRP initiator, ethylene bis(2‐bromoisobutyrate) (EBBiB), was used as initiator to synthesize the ABA type poly(styrene‐bn‐butyl acrylate‐b‐styrene) (PS‐PnBA‐PS) triblock copolymer. The effects of ligand and cationic surfactant on polymerizations were also discussed. Gel permeation chromatography (GPC) was used to characterize the molecular weight (Mn) and molecular weight distribution (MWD) of the resultant triblock copolymers. Particle size and particle size distribution of resulted latexes were characterized by dynamic light scattering (DLS). The resultant latexes showed good colloidal stability with average particle size around 100–300 nm in diameter. Glass transition temperature (Tg) of copolymers was studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. ABCBA‐type pentablock copolymers of methyl methacrylate, styrene, and isobutylene (IB) were prepared by the cationic polymerization of IB in the presence of the α,ω‐dichloro‐PS‐b‐PMMA‐b‐PS triblock copolymer [where PS is polystyrene and PMMA is poly(methyl methacrylate)] as a macroinitiator in conjunction with diethylaluminum chloride (Et2AlCl) as a coinitiator. The macroinitiator was prepared by a two‐step copper‐based atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). The reaction temperature, ?78 or ?25 °C, significantly affected the IB content in the resulting copolymers; a higher content was obtained at ?78 °C. The formation of the PIB‐b‐PS‐b‐PMMA‐b‐PS‐b‐PIB copolymers (where PIB is polyisobutylene), prepared at ?25 (20.3 mol % IB) or ?78 °C (61.3 mol % IB; rubbery material), with relatively narrow molecular weight distributions provided direct evidence of the presence of labile chlorine atoms at both ends of the macroinitiator capable of initiation of cationic polymerization of IB. One glass‐transition temperature (Tg), 104.5 °C, was observed for the aforementioned triblock copolymer, and the pentablock copolymer containing 61.3 mol % IB showed two well‐defined Tg's: ?73.0 °C for PIB and 95.6 °C for the PS–PMMA blocks. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Three linear pentablock quintopolymers (l‐SIDMV), where S is polystyrene (PS), I polyisoprene‐1,4 (PI), D poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS), M poly(tert‐butyl methacrylate) (PtBuM), and V poly(2‐vinylpyridine) (P2VP), were synthesized by anionic polymerization high vacuum techniques. The approach involves the following: (a) The synthesis of living triblock terpolymer PS‐b‐PI‐b‐PDMSLi and diblock copolymer P2VP‐b‐PtBuMK by sequential polymerizations of the corresponding monomers with sec‐BuLi and benzyl potassium, respectively; and (b) The selective linking of the living triblock terpolymer with the chlorosilane group of 2‐(chloromethylphenyl)ethyldimethylchlorosilane (CMPDMS), followed by linking of the living block copolymer with the remaining chloromethyl group of CMPDMS. Molecular characterization carried out by size exclusion chromatography, membrane osmometry, solution (in CDCl3 or d8‐toluene) and solid‐state 1H‐NMR spectroscopy indicated a high degree of molecular and compositional homogeneity. Differential scanning calorimetry results on the precursors and final polymers were discussed. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 46: 3938–3946, 2008  相似文献

We have designed and synthesized rod–coil–rod triblock copolymers of controlled molecular weight by two‐step nitroxide‐mediated radical polymerization, where the rod part consists of “mesogen‐jacketed liquid crystalline polymer” (MJLCP). The MJLCP segment examined in our studies is poly{2,5‐bis[(4‐methoxyphenyl)oxycarbonyl]styrene} (MPCS) while the coil part is polyisoprene (PI). Characterization of the triblock copolymers by GPC, 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopies, TGA, DSC confirmed that the triblock copolymers were comprised of microphase‐separated low Tg amorphous PI and high Tg PMPCS blocks. Analysis of POM and 1D, 2D‐WAXD demonstrated that the triblock copolymers formed nematic liquid crystal phase. Morphological studies using TEM indicated the sample formed lamellar structure. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 45: 5949–5956, 2007  相似文献

Among three cyclopentadienyl titanium complexes studied, CpTiCl2(OEt), containing a 5% excess CpTiCl3, has proven to be a very efficient catalyst for the ring‐opening polymerization (ROP) of L ‐lactide (LLA) in toluene at 130 °C. Kinetic studies revealed that the polymerization yield (up to 100%) and the molecular weight increase linearly with time, leading to well‐defined PLLA with narrow molecular weight distributions (Mw/Mn ≤ 1.1). Based on the above results, PS‐b‐PLLA, PI‐b‐PLLA, PEO‐b‐PLLA block copolymers, and a PS‐b‐PI‐b‐PLLA triblock terpolymer were synthesized. The synthetic strategy involved: (a) the preparation of OH‐end‐functionalized homopolymers or diblock copolymers by anionic polymerization, (b) the reaction of the OH‐functionalized polymers with CpTiCl3 to give the corresponding Ti‐macrocatalyst, and (c) the ROP of LLA to afford the final block copolymers. PMMA‐g‐PLLA [PMMA: poly(methyl methacrylate)] was also synthesized by: (a) the reaction of CpTiCl3 with 2‐hydroxy ethyl methacrylate, HEMA, to give the Ti‐HEMA‐catalyst, (b) the ROP of LLA to afford a PLLA methacrylic‐macromonomer, and (c) the copolymerization (conventional and ATRP) of the macromonomer with MMA to afford the final graft copolymer. Intermediate and final products were characterized by NMR spectroscopy and size exclusion chromatography, equipped with refractive index and two‐angle laser light scattering detectors. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Valorization of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) waste has been achieved using glycolysis. The resulting diols were employed for the synthesis of triblock copolymers by atom transfer radical polymerization using copper (I) bromide and (1,1,4,7,10,10)‐hexamethyltriethylenetetramine as catalyst system. Macroinitiator was obtained after depolymerization of PET waste followed by functionalization of the obtained glycolysate with 2‐bromoisobutyrate bromide. Polymerization of styrene (S) and glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) has been achieved leading to PS‐b‐PETG‐b‐PS and (PS‐stat‐PGMA)‐b‐PETG‐b‐(PS‐stat‐PGMA) triblock copolymers. Best results were obtained at 100 °C. At this temperature, termination reaction were negligible and the measured number‐average molar mass of the product increased linearly with monomer conversion in agreement with the theoretical Mn with low polydispersity products achieved. Polymers were also characterized by 1H NMR. This work presents a original valorization of PET waste as (PS‐stat‐PGMA)‐b‐PETG‐b‐(PS‐stat‐PGMA) copolymer could be used as heat curable coatings. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Styrenic single and double star‐tailed macromonomers were synthesized by selective reaction of living homo/miktoarm stars with the chlorosilane groups of 4‐(chlorodimethylsilyl)‐ and 4‐(dichloromethylsilyl)styrene, respectively. The in situ anionic homopolymerization of macromonomers with sec‐BuLi and copolymerization with butadiene and styrene, led to single/double homo/miktoarm star‐tailed molecular brushes and combs, as well as a block copolymer consisting of a linear polystyrene chain and a double miktoarm (PBd/PS) star‐tailed brush‐like block. Molecular characterization by size exclusion chromatography, size exclusion chromatography/two‐angle laser light scattering, and NMR spectroscopy, revealed the high molecular/compositional homogeneity of all intermediate and final products. These are only a few examples of the plethora of complex architectures possible using the above macromonomers. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Poly(dimethylsiloxane)‐containing diblock and triblock copolymers were prepared by the combination of anionic ring‐opening polymerization (AROP) of hexamethylcyclotrisiloxane (D3) and nitroxide‐mediated radical polymerization (NMRP) of methyl acrylate (MA), isoprene (IP), and styrene (St). The first step was the preparation of a TIPNO‐based alkoxyamine carrying a 4‐bromophenyl group. The alkoxyamine was then treated with Li powder in ether, and AROP of D3 was carried out using the resulting lithiophenyl alkoxyamine at room temperature, giving functional poly(D3) with Mw/Mn of 1.09–1.16. NMRPs of MA, St, and IP from the poly(D3) at 120 °C gave poly(D3b‐MA), poly(D3b‐St), and poly(D3b‐IP) diblock copolymers, and subsequent NMRPs of St from poly(D3b‐MA) and poly(D3b‐IP) at 120 °C gave poly(D3b‐MA‐b‐St) and poly(D3b‐IP‐b‐St) triblock copolymers. The poly(dimethylsiloxane)‐containing diblock and triblock copolymers were analyzed by 1H NMR and size exclusion chromatography. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A new methodology is successfully used for the concurrent synthesis of three different copolymers; diblock, triblock, and three‐armed star‐block copolymers of styrene and isoprene via the living anionic polymerization with control over the molecular weight and weight fractions of each block. The room temperature polymerization process has resulted in the well defined linear and radial block copolymers, when the living di‐block of poly(styrene‐b‐isoprene) was coupled using cheap and readily available malonyl chloride as a novel coupling agent giving nearly 100% yield. The resulting block copolymers have narrow polydispersity index (PDI = 1.01–1.09) with a good agreement between the calculated and the observed molecular weights. The results are further supported by fractionation of the block copolymers by reversed‐phase temperature gradient interaction chromatography (RP‐TGIC) technique followed by size exclusion chromatography (SEC). © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Main‐chain imidazolium‐functionalized amphiphilic block copolymers (PIL‐b‐PS) consisting of polyionic liquid (PIL) and polystyrene (PS) blocks have been first synthesized by condensation polymerization combined with nitroxide‐mediated free radical polymerization (NMP). The di‐functional imidazolium‐based ionic liquid (IL) having both hydroxyl and ester end groups was synthesized through Michael addition between imidazole and methylacrylate (MA) and further quaternization by 2‐chloroethanol. The HTEMPO (4‐hydroxy‐2,2,6,6‐tetramethyl‐1‐piperidinyloxy) terminated polyionic liquid (HTEMPO‐PIL) as the hydrophilic block was prepared by condensation polymerization of di‐functional imidazolium IL and HTEMPO at a certain ratio. The hydrophobic PS block was synthesized by controlled radical polymerization of styrene using HTEMPO‐PIL through NMP, resulting PIL‐b‐PS block copolymers. The structure of block copolymers obtained has been characterized and verified by FTIR, 1H NMR, and size exclusion chromatography analyses. In addition, the morphology and size of the micelles formed by PIL‐b‐PS block copolymers in water were investigated by transmission electron microscopy and dynamic light scattering. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. With the aim of creating highly branched amphiphilic block copolymers, the primary amine end groups of the poly(propylene imine) dendrimers DAB‐dendr‐(NH2)8 and DAB‐dendr‐(NH2)64 were converted to 2‐bromoisobutyramide groups. Poly (styrene‐btert‐butyl methacrylate) (PS‐b‐PtBMA) was synthesized by ATRP from the eight end group initiator, and poly(styrene‐btert‐butyl acrylate) (PS‐b‐PtBA) was synthesized from the 64 end group initiator. The tert‐butyl groups were removed to produce poly(styrene‐b‐methacrylic acid) (PS‐b‐PMAA) and poly(styrene‐b‐acrylic acid) (PS‐b‐PAA). Comparison of size exclusion chromatography (SEC) absolute molecular weight analyses of the polystyrenes with calculated molecular weights showed that the eight end group initiator produced a polystyrene with about eight branches, and that the 64 end group initiator produced polystyrene with many fewer than 64 branches. The PS‐b‐PtBA materials also have many fewer than 64 branches. The PS‐b‐PAA samples dissolved molecularly in DMF but formed aggregates in water even at pH 10. AFM images of the PS‐b‐PtBAs spin coated from THF and DMF onto mica showed aggregates. AFM images of the PS‐b‐PAAs spin coated from various mixtures of DMF and water at pH 10 showed flat disks and worm‐like images similar to those observed with linear PS‐b‐PAAs. Use of a PS‐b‐PAA and a PS‐b‐PMAA as templates for emulsion polymerization of styrene produced latexes 100–200 nm in diameter. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Anthracene‐functionalized oxanorbornene monomer and oxanorbornenyl polystyrene (PS) with ω‐anthracene end‐functionalized macromonomer were first polymerized via ring‐opening metathesis polymerization using the first‐generation Grubbs' catalyst in dichloromethane at room temperature and then clicked with maleimide end‐functionalized polymers, poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG)‐MI, poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA)‐MI, and poly(tert‐butyl acrylate) (PtBA)‐MI in a Diels–Alder reaction in toluene at 120 °C to create corresponding graft copolymers, poly(oxanorbornene)‐g‐PEG, poly(oxanorbornene)‐g‐PMMA, and graft block copolymers, poly(oxanorbornene)‐g‐(PS‐b‐PEG), poly(oxanorbornene)‐g‐(PS‐b‐PMMA), and poly(oxanorbornene)‐g‐(PS‐b‐PtBA), respectively. Diels–Alder click reaction efficiency for graft copolymerization was monitored by UV–vis spectroscopy. The dn/dc values of graft copolymers and graft block copolymers were experimentally obtained using a triple detection gel permeation chromatography and subsequently introduced to the software so as to give molecular weights, intrinsic viscosity ([η]) and hydrodynamic radius (Rh) values. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of polystyrene‐b‐(poly(2‐(2‐bromopropionyloxy) styrene)‐g‐poly(methyl methacrylate)) (PS‐b‐(PBPS‐g‐PMMA)) and polystyrene‐b‐(poly(2‐(2‐bromopropionyloxy)ethyl acrylate)‐g‐poly(methyl methacrylate)) (PS‐b‐(PBPEA‐g‐PMMA)) as new coil‐comb block copolymers (CCBCPs) were synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). The linear diblock copolymer polystyrene‐b‐poly(4‐acetoxystyrene) and polystyrene‐b‐poly(2‐(trimethylsilyloxy)ethyl acrylate) PS‐b‐P(HEA‐TMS) were obtained by combining ATRP and activators regenerated by electron transfer (ARGET) ATRP. Secondary bromide‐initiating sites for ATRP were introduced by liberation of hydroxyl groups via deprotection and subsequent esterification reaction with 2‐bromopropionyl bromide. Grafting of PMMA onto either the PBPS block or the PBPEA block via ATRP yielded the desired PS‐b‐(PBPS‐g‐PMMA) or PS‐b‐(PBPEA‐g‐PMMA). 1H nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and gel permeation chromatography data indicated the target CCBCPs were successfully synthesized. Preliminary investigation on selected CCBCPs suggests that they can form ordered nanostructures via microphase separation. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. A series of novel four‐arm A2B2 and A2BC and five‐arm A2B2C miktoarm star polymers, where A is poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS), B is polystyrene (PS), and C is polyisoprene (PI), were successfully synthesized by the combination of chlorosilane and benzyl chloride linking chemistry. This new and general methodology is based on the linking reaction of in‐chain benzyl chloride functionalized poly(dimethylsiloxane) (icBnCl–PDMS) with the in‐chain diphenylalkyl (icD) living centers of PS‐DLi‐PS, PS‐DLi‐PI, or (PS)2‐DLi‐PI. icBnCl–PDMS was synthesized by the selective reaction of lithium PDMS enolate (PDMSOLi) with the chlorosilane groups of dichloro[2‐(chloromethylphenyl)ethyl]methylsilane, leaving the benzyl chloride group intact. The icD living polymers, characterized by the low basicity of DLi to avoid side reactions with PDMS, were prepared by the reaction of the corresponding living chains with the appropriate chloro/bromo derivatives of diphenylethylene, followed by a reaction with BuLi or the living polymer. The combined molecular characterization results of size exclusion chromatography, 1H NMR, and right‐angle laser light scattering revealed a high degree of structural and compositional homogeneity in all miktoarm stars prepared. The power of this general approach was demonstrated by the synthesis of a morphologically interesting complex miktoarm star polymer composed of two triblock terpolymer (PS‐b‐PI‐b‐PDMS) and two diblock copolymer (PS‐b‐PI) arms. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Atom transfer radical polymerization conditions with copper(I) bromide/pentamethyldiethylenetriamine (CuBr/PMDETA) as the catalyst system were employed for the polymerization of tert‐butyl acrylate, methyl acrylate, and styrene to generate well‐defined homopolymers, diblock copolymers, and triblock copolymers. Temperature studies indicated that the polymerizations occurred smoothly in bulk at 50 °C. The kinetics of tert‐butyl acrylate polymerization under these conditions are reported. Well‐defined poly(tert‐butyl acrylate) (PtBA; polydispersity index = 1.14) and poly(methyl acrylate) (PMA; polydispersity index = 1.03) homopolymers were synthesized and then used as macroinitiators for the preparation of PtBA‐b‐PMA and PMA‐b‐PtBA diblock copolymers in bulk at 50 °C or in toluene at 60 or 90 °C. In toluene, the amount of CuBr/PMDETA relative to the macroinitiator was important; at least 1 equiv of CuBr/PMDETA was required for complete initiation. Typical block lengths were composed of 100–150 repeat units per segment. A triblock copolymer, composed of PtBA‐b‐PMA‐b‐PS (PS = polystyrene), was also synthesized with a well‐defined composition and a narrow molecular weight dispersity. The tert‐butyl esters of PtBA‐b‐PMA and PtBA‐b‐PMA‐b‐PS were selectively cleaved to form the amphiphilic block copolymers PAA‐b‐PMA [PAA = poly(acrylic acid)] and PAA‐b‐PMA‐b‐PS, respectively, via reaction with anhydrous trifluoroacetic acid in dichloromethane at room temperature for 3 h. Characterization data are reported from analyses by gel permeation chromatography; infrared, 1H NMR, and 13C NMR spectroscopies; differential scanning calorimetry; and matrix‐assisted, laser desorption/ionization time‐of‐flight mass spectrometry. The assembly of the amphiphilic triblock copolymer PAA90b‐PMA80b‐PS98 within an aqueous solution, followed by conversion into stable complex nanostructures via crosslinking reactions between the hydrophilic PAA chains comprising the peripheral layers, produced mixtures of spherical and cylindrical topologies. The visualization and size determination of the resulting nanostructures were performed by atomic force microscopy, which revealed very interesting segregation phenomena. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. True model linear poly(styrene‐b‐dimethylsiloxane) PS‐b‐PDMS copolymers were synthesized by using sequential addition of monomers and anionic polymerization (high‐vacuum techniques), employing the most recent experimental procedures that allow the controlled polymerization of each monomer to obtain blocks with controlled molar masses. The model diblock copolymers obtained were analyzed by using different techniques, such as size‐exclusion chromatography, 1H NMR, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, small angle X‐rays scattering (SAXS), and wide angle X‐rays scattering (WAXS). The PS‐b‐PDMS copolymers obtained showed narrow molar mass distribution and variable PDMS content, ranging from 2 up to 55 wt %. Compacted powder samples were investigated by SAXS to reveal their structure and morphology changes on thermal treatment in the interval from 30 to 200 °C. The sample with the highest PDMS content exhibits a lamellar morphology, whereas two other samples show hexagonally packed cylinders of PDMS in a PS matrix. For the lowest PDMS content samples, the SAXS pattern corresponds to a disordered morphology and did not show any changes on thermal treatment. Detailed information about the morphology of scattering domains was obtained by fitting the SAXS scattering curves. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. 4‐Hydroxythiophenol (HTP) grafted poly(styrene‐b‐acrylic acid) (PS‐b‐PAA) block copolymers (BCPs) (PS‐b‐PAA‐g‐HTP) was synthesized using the esterification reaction between the carboxyl groups and hydroxyl groups. Self‐assembly behavior of the graft copolymer in 1,4‐dioxane/water was investigated. Assemblies of different morphologies, porous, and bowl‐shaped structures, could be easily prepared. A possible mechanism for the formation of the porous and bowl‐shaped structures was discussed. The present study showed a facile method for the preparation of functionalized PS‐b‐PAA BCPs, which could easily self‐assembly into novel structures in aqueous solution. These assemblies may be used to generate new functional materials. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part B: Polym. Phys. 2016 , 54, 1551–1557  相似文献

Novel block–graft copolymers [poly(styrene‐b‐ethylene‐co‐butylene‐b‐styrene)‐g‐poly(tert‐butyl acrylate)] were synthesized by the atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of tert‐butyl acrylate (tBA) with chloromethylated poly(styrene‐b‐ethylene‐co‐butylene‐b‐styrene) (SEBS) as a macromolecular initiator. The copolymers were composed of triblock SEBS as the backbone and tBA as grafts attached to the polystyrene end blocks. The macromolecular initiator (chloromethylated SEBS) was prepared by successive hydrogenation and chloromethylation of SEBS. The degree of chloromethylation, ranging from 1.6 to 36.5 mol % according to the styrene units in SEBS, was attained with adjustments in the amount of SnCl4 and the reaction time with a slight effect on the monodispersity of the starting material (SEBS). The ATRP mechanism of the copolymerization was supported by the kinetic data and the linear increase in the molecular weights of the products with conversion. The graft density was controlled with changes in the functionality of the chloromethylated SEBS. The average length of the graft chain, ranging from a few repeat units to about two hundred, was adjusted with changes in the reaction time and alterations in the initiator/catalyst/ligand molar ratio. Incomplete initiation was detected at a low conversion; moreover, for initiators with low functionality, sluggish initiation was overcome with suitable reaction conditions. The block–graft copolymers were hydrolyzed into amphiphilic ones containing poly(acrylic acid) grafts. The aggregation behavior of the amphiphilic copolymers was studied with dynamic light scattering and transmission electron microscopy, and the aggregates showed a variety of morphologies. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
