The synthesis and mesomorphic properties of six monomers and six side‐chain liquid‐crystal polymers with a chiral center are described. The polysiloxanes were prepared by the hydrosilation of monomers with poly(hydromethylsiloxane)s. Most of the polymers exhibit a wide range of the chiral smectic C phase (SmC*). © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci A: Polym Chem 38: 1609–1617, 2000  相似文献

Fluorinated copolyimides derived from 4,4′‐oxydiphthalic anhydride (ODPA) with 4,4′‐oxydianline (ODA) and trifluoromethyl‐containing aromatic diamines have been synthesized and characterized. The trifluoromethyl‐containing diamines include 2,4‐diamino‐3′‐trifluoromethylazobenzene, 2,4‐diamino‐1‐[(4′‐trifluoromethylphenoxy) phenyl] aniline, 3,5‐diamino‐1‐[(4′‐trifluoromethylphenoxy) phenyl] benzamide, 3,5‐diamino‐1‐[(3′‐trifluoromethyl) phenyl] benzamide, 1,4‐bis(4′‐aminophenoxy)‐2‐(3′‐trifluoromethylphenyl) benzene, 3,5‐diaminobenzenetrifluoride, 4,4′‐diamino‐4″‐(p‐trifluoromethyl phenoxy) triphenylamine, and 4‐[(4′‐trifluoromethylphenoxy) phenyl]‐2,6‐bis(4″‐aminophenyl)pyridine. Strong and flexible copolyimide films, produced by casting the polyamic acid solution followed by thermal imidization, exhibited great thermal stability and high mechanical properties. The polyimides had an ultraviolet–visible absorption cutoff at 330–340 nm and pretilt angles as high as 20° for nematic liquid crystals, making them great potential candidates for advanced liquid‐crystal display applications. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A polymer‐dispersed liquid‐crystal (PDLC) film was prepared from UV‐curable acrylic, thermally curable epoxy, and a liquid‐crystal (LC) mixture with a fixed LC content of 40 wt %. The UV irradiation and heat treatments were in sequential steps. At first, a phase diagram of a binary mixture of LC (E63) and epoxy [diglycidyl ether of polypropylene glycol (DER736)] was established to understand their miscibility. Then, the phase‐separation temperatures and morphologies of pre‐UV‐cured films with different equivalent DER736/dicyandiamide (DICY) molar ratios were observed. Finally, the polymerization‐induced phase‐separation behavior and morphology of the PDLC film were studied by real‐time observation while the film was maintained at 130 °C under the microscope. The results showed that the acrylic network would not affect the phase‐separation behavior of the E63/DER736 mixture. In both thermally induced and polymerization‐induced phase separations, the undissolved DICY particles acted as nucleation agents and were capable of inducing E63 to separate out early. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Three series of semiflexible and rigid main‐chain polyesters containing photoreactive mesogenic units derived from p‐phenylenediacrylic acid (PDA) and cinnamic acid have been synthesized by high‐temperature polycondensation. The thermal and mesomorphic properties of the polymers have been determined. The photochemical behavior of polymer P‐[1]‐T, which contains a PDA unit, has been studied both in solution and in films. In solution, [2+2] photocycloaddition, E/Z photoisomerization, and photo‐Fries rearrangement can take place. In contrast, the dominant process in spin‐coated films is the [2+2] photocycloaddition reaction, which causes crosslinking of the polymer. In films, the photochemistry and induction of anisotropy are strongly influenced by the aggregation of the PDA phenylester unit. A dichroism of about 0.2 has been induced in films by irradiation with linearly polarized UV light, and thus the capability of these films to induce optical anisotropy and align liquid crystals has been demonstrated. Liquid‐crystalline cells have been made with polarized irradiated films of P‐[1]‐T as aligning layers. A commercial liquid‐crystalline mixture has been used for this study, and a similar liquid‐crystalline order determined by polarized Fourier transform infrared to a commercial cell with rubbed polyimide as an aligning layer has been detected. Because of crosslinking of the irradiated P‐[1]‐T photoaligning layer, the photoinduced anisotropy is stable at high temperatures, and the liquid‐crystalline molecules are insoluble in the irradiated polymer. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We report on the structures and electro‐optical properties of epoxy/acrylic polymer‐dispersed liquid‐crystal (PDLC) films. A thermal stimulated current (TSC) analysis was used to investigate the physical structures of PDLC. In the TSC spectrum of PDLC, three relaxation peaks were observed: the glass transition of the liquid crystal, the glass transition of the polymer matrix, and the ρ transition. The ρ transition represents the discharge behavior of space charges, and its intensity increased as the curing time and content of the curing agent dicyandiamide (DICY) increased. The pre‐UV‐cured films with different DICY contents were thermally cured at 130 °C for various periods. The electro‐optical properties of PDLC, such as the contrast ratio and switching voltage, increased as the curing time of DICY, the content of DICY, or both increased. As the ambient temperature increased from 10 to 40 °C, the contrast ratio and switching voltage of PDLC gradually decreased. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Two series of vinyl‐terminated, side‐chain liquid‐crystalline polyethers containing 4,4′‐biphenyl and 2,6‐naphthalene moieties as mesogenic cores with several contents of vinyl crosslinkable groups were synthesized by chemically modifying poly(epichlorohydrin) with mixtures of saturated and vinyl‐terminated mesogenic acids. In most cases the degree of modification was over 90%. The polymers were characterized by chlorine analysis, IR and 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopies, viscometry, size exclusion chromatography/multi‐angle laser light scattering, and thermogravimetric analysis. The liquid‐crystal behavior of all the synthesized polymers was examined by differential scanning calorimetry, polarized optical microscopy (POM), and X‐ray diffraction on mechanically oriented samples. The crosslinking of most polymers was done by peroxide‐type initiators, which generally led to liquid‐crystal elastomers. The mesophase organization was maintained on the crosslinked materials, as confirmed by POM and X‐ray diffraction. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We report on the morphological and thermal properties of polymer‐dispersed liquid crystals (PDLCs) fabricated with frontal‐polymerization‐induced phase separation (FPIPS). Frontal polymerization is characterized by a rapid‐conversion, high‐temperature, and large‐thermal‐gradient environment. A comparison is made between the morphological and thermal properties of PDLCs fabricated with FPIPS and traditional thermal‐polymerization‐induced phase separation. Characterization includes differential scanning calorimetry to probe the glass and nematic‐to‐isotropic transitions and scanning electron microscopy to evaluate the phase‐separated morphology. In addition, the frontal temperatures and velocities are reported for PDLCs fabricated with frontal polymerization. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The photoinitiated polymerization of 2-chloro-1,4-phenylene bis[4-[6-(acryloyloxy)hexyloxy]benzoate] (1M) was studied. The monomer 1M exhibited a broad nematic phase between 24.9 and 113.7 °C on a DSC cooling scan. It was oriented in its nematic phase at a substrate coated with polyimide and unidirectionally rubbed with a nylon cloth. During polymerization, the ordering of the liquid–crystal molecules was fixed, yielding a uniaxially crosslinked network. The clear liquid–crystal networks (LCNs) exhibited a birefringence between 0.14 and 0.19, depending on the polymerization temperature. Finally, a nonmesogenic diluent, tetra(ethylene glycol)diacrylate, was mixed with 1M, subsequently decreasing the birefringence of the obtained LCNs. The LCNs containing nonmesogenic diluent exhibited not only a smaller birefringence but also a weaker birefringence dispersion in the visible region. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Ternary blend fibers (TBFs), based on melt blends of poly(ethylene 2,6‐naphthalate), poly(ethylene terephthalate), and a thermotropic liquid‐crystal polymer (TLCP), were prepared by a process of melt blending and spinning to achieve high‐performance fibers. The reinforcement effect of the polymer matrix by the TLCP component, the fibrillar structure with TLCP fibrils of high aspect ratios, and the development of more ordered and perfect crystalline structures by an annealing process resulted in the improvement of the tensile strength and modulus for the TBFs. An increase in the apparent crystallite size with the spinning speed was attributed to the development of larger crystallites and more ordered crystalline structures in the annealed TBFs. The birefringence and density of the TBFs increased with increasing spinning speed, the TBFs becoming more oriented and the crystal packing becoming more enhanced. The molecular orientation was an important factor in determining the tensile strength and modulus of the TBFs. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A well‐defined structure liquid crystal heptakis [6‐deoxy‐6‐(1‐H‐1,2,3‐triazol‐4‐yl)(methyl)6‐(4‐methoxybiphenyl‐4′‐yloxy) hexanoyl]‐β‐cyclodextrin (H6B‐β‐CD) was synthesized from propargyl 6‐(4‐methoxybiphenyl‐4′‐yloxy) hexanoate (P6B) and heptakis (6‐deoxy‐6‐azido)‐β‐cyclodextrin ((N3)7‐β‐CD) by click reaction. The chemical structure of H6B‐β‐CD was confirmed by 1H NMR, FTIR, and MALDI‐TOF MS. The thermal stability of the compound was investigated by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The liquid crystalline behavior was studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), polarizing optical microcopy (POM), and wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction (WAXD) measurement. These investigations have shown that the supramolecular structure of H6B‐β‐CD are consisted of a large scale ordered lamellar structure and a small scale ordered structure (SmE) at low temperature region. As the temperature increases, the small scale structure becomes disordered relatively in the first instance, from smectic E to smectic A. Then, the lamellar structure collapses and nematic phase and isotropic phase are observed in sequence. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 48: 2838–2845, 2010  相似文献

An Erratum has been published for this article in Journal of Polymer Science Part A: Polymer Chemistry (2003) 41(23) 3862 A new series of combined‐type, azobenzene‐based organophosphorus liquid‐crystalline polymers were synthesized, and their photoisomerization properties were studied. The prepared polymers contained azobenzene units as both the main‐chain and side‐chain mesogens. Various groups were substituted in the terminal of the side‐chain azobenzene mesogen, and the effects of the substituents were investigated. All the polymers were prepared at the ambient temperature by solution polycondensation with various 4‐substituted phenylazo‐4′‐phenyloxyhexylphosphorodichloridates and 4,4′‐bis(6‐hydroxyhexyloxy) azobenzene. The polymers were characterized with gel permeation chromatography, Fourier transform infrared, and 1H, 13C, and 31P NMR spectroscopy. Thermogravimetric analysis revealed that all the polymers had high char yields. The liquid‐crystalline behavior of the polymers was examined with hot‐stage optical polarizing microscopy, and all the polymers showed liquid‐crystalline properties. The formation of a mesophase was confirmed by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The DSC data suggested that mesophase stability was better for electron‐withdrawing substituents than for halogens and unsubstituted ones. Ultraviolet irradiation studies indicated that the time taken for the completion of photoisomerization depended on the dipolar moment, size, and donor–acceptor characteristics of the terminal substituents. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Field‐emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) was used to monitor pinecone‐like Cu(II) crystal growth on polymeric fibers for various growth times. In FESEM images, Cu(II) complexes and Cu(OH)2 crystal growth on poly(acryloamidino ethylene amine) and poly(acryloamidino diethylenediamine) were observed. Up to an elapsed time of 16 min, crystal growth was observed in only one direction. However, after an elapsed time of 20 h, pinecone‐like crystals covered the entire surfaces of the synthesized polymers. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X‐ray diffraction, and X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy were used for analysis. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Side‐chain liquid‐crystalline polymers (SCLCPs) as nucleating agents for high‐density polyethylene (HDPE) were investigated. For this purpose, the molecular architectures of four different vinyl monomers with liquid‐crystalline properties were designed and prepared with 1‐butanol, 1‐pentanol, 4‐hydroxybenzoic acid, hydroquinone, and acryloyl chloride as the starting materials through alkylation and acylation reactions. The corresponding polymers were synthesized by homopolymerization in 1,4‐dioxane with benzoyl peroxide as the initiator at 60 °C. Both the monomers and the synthesized polymers were characterized with elemental analysis, Fourier transform infrared, and 1H NMR measurements. Differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, and hot stage polarized optical microscopy were employed to study the phase‐transition temperature, mesophase texture, and thermal stability of the liquid‐crystalline polymers. The results showed that all the polymers had thermotropic liquid‐crystalline features. Being used as nucleating agents, SCLCPs effectively increased both the crystallization temperature and rate and, at the same time, raised the crystallinity for HDPE. In comparison with common small‐molecule nucleating agents, such as 1,3:2,4‐dibenzylidenesorbitol, SCLCPs are more efficient and are indeed excellent nucleating agents for HDPE. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. New well‐defined brush polypyromellitimides with n‐octyloxy and n‐dodecyloxy side chains were prepared by two‐step polycondensations of 3,6‐di(n‐alkyloxy)pyromellitic dianhydrides with various conventional aromatic diamines. Their structures and properties were investigated and compared with those of polyimides without the side chains. The alkyloxylated poly(amic acid)s had inherent viscosities of 0.45–1.09 dL/g. The polyimides showed enhanced solubility in organic solvents and had layered structures in the solid state. As the side‐chain length increased from n‐octyloxy to n‐dodecyloxy, the extent of layered structure formation increased, whereas the glass‐transition temperature and thermal resistance decreased. As for the liquid‐crystal (LC) aligning ability measured with 4‐n‐pentyl‐4′‐cyanobiphenyl on rubbed thin‐film surfaces, all the side‐chain polyimides revealed homogeneous LC alignment parallel to the rubbing direction with distinctively higher pretilt angles than those of the polyimides without the side chains. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Phase behaviors of polydisperse polystyrene (PS)/nematic liquid‐crystal systems [P‐ethoxy ‐ benzylidene ‐ pn‐butylaniline (EBBA)] are investigated with a thermo‐optical analysis technique. We also develop a thermodynamic framework to describe the phase behaviors of polydisperse PS/EBBA systems. The proposed model is based on a modified double‐lattice model to describe isotropic mixing and Maier–Saupe theory for anisotropic ordering. To correlate the polymer chain length and energy parameters in a nematic–isotropic biphasic region and to apply the primary interaction parameter in an isotropic–isotropic phase‐transition behaviors of polydisperse PS/EBBA systems. The proposed model shows remarkable agreement with experimental data for the model systems in comparison with an existing model. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A liquid‐crystalline (LC) epoxy resin was cured at different temperatures and some types of curing systems having different phase structures (isotropic or polydomain, which have a microscopically ordered LC network structure) were obtained. The diameters of each domain in the polydomain system changed from the small to the larger size. The diameters of the LC domains were evaluated using a polarized optical microscope and the polarized microscopy FTIR mapping method. These systems were used to investigate the relationship between the network arrangement and mechanical properties. The fracture toughness of the cured systems was related to the enlargement of the ordered area in the network structures. With the toughness improvement, the meandering cracks were observed at the fracture surfaces. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys 47: 156–165, 2009  相似文献

Multiple and diverse applications have been recently found for miniemulsions and miniemulsion polymerization. In this work, miniemulsion polymerization is presented as a suitable technique for the preparation of high‐solid‐content latices with large particle sizes. Monomer miniemulsions were prepared with a high‐pressure homogenizer, and droplet sizes of 200–700 nm were obtained. Latexes with particle sizes larger than the sizes commonly accepted for miniemulsion polymerization were obtained. With fixed operational conditions of the homogenizer, the type of stabilizer was the key parameter determining the droplet size and the droplet size distribution. The particle size of the latices obtained by miniemulsion polymerization indicated that the particles were mainly formed by droplet nucleation. Latexes obtained by this process have multiple applications, including use as seeds in the polymerization of high‐solid‐content latices. This article shows that potential new applications for miniemulsion polymerization are far from being exhausted. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Liquid‐crystalline epoxy resins were synthesized from 6‐hydroxy‐2‐naphthoic acid, which was used as a mesogenic component, with phenylhydroquinone or isosorbide and via a further reaction with (6‐bromo‐1‐hexyl)glycidylether, which was used as a flexible spacer. In this way, phenylhydroquinone‐bis‐6‐[6‐(glycidyloxy)hexyloxy]2‐naphthoate (Gly A) and isosorbide‐bis‐6‐[6‐(glycidyloxy)hexyloxy]2‐naphthoate (Gly B) were obtained. Nematic elastomers were obtained by the crosslinking of Gly A with 2,4‐diaminotoluene (DAT) and 1,10‐decanedicarboxylic acid (SA). The liquid‐crystalline behavior was investigated with differential scanning calorimetry, polarizing light microscopy, and X‐ray diffractometry. Cholesteric mesophases were produced by the blending of different ratios of Gly A and Gly B, and these blends were then crosslinked with SA to produce nematic mesophases. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Two series of vinyl‐terminated side‐chain liquid‐crystalline polyethers containing ethylene oxide or glycidyl aromatic carboxylates as spacers were synthesized. The mesogenic cores were 4,4′‐biphenyl or 2,6‐naphthalene moieties. The polymers were synthesized by chemically modifying poly(epichlorohydrin) or poly(epichlorohydrin)‐poly(ethylene oxide) with the corresponding mesogenic carboxylic acids or with mixtures of these acids and the nonmesogenic non‐crosslinkable analogous 4‐biphenyl‐ and 2‐naphthalenecarboxylic acids. In most cases the degree of modification achieved was higher than 90%. The polymers were characterized by chlorine analysis, IR, and 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopies; viscosimetry; size exclusion chromatography; multi‐angle laser light scattering; and thermogravimetric analysis. The liquid‐crystal behavior, shown by most polymers, was examined by differential scanning calorimetry, polarized optical microscopy (POM), and X‐ray diffraction on mechanically oriented samples. The crosslinking of most polymers was done by peroxide‐type initiators that led to liquid‐crystal thermosets or elastomers. The freezing of the mesophase organization on the crosslinked materials was confirmed by POM and X‐ray diffraction. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The structures and properties of liquid‐crystalline polymers containing laterally attached p‐terphenyl and p‐pentaphenyl have been studied. In contrast to their mesogenic groups, that is, p‐terphenyl and p‐pentaphenyl, the polymers have much lower crystallinity and also lower nematic‐to‐isotropic transition temperatures. The significant depression in crystallinity can be attributed to flexible chain segments laterally attached to the oligo p‐phenylene rods, which prevent close packing of the rods and thus disrupt the crystallization. The destabilization of the liquid‐crystalline phase is due to the diluting effect of the flexible polymer backbones; that is, the concentration of the mesogenic groups is reduced. The polymer containing p‐pentaphenyl can still exhibit good solubility in common solvents and emit light at about 402 nm in the solvent tetrahydrofuran. In the solid state, the emission redshifts to 418 nm, which is fairly close to the blue‐light emission. An interdigitated packing structure of mesogenic groups has been proposed to represent the structure of the polymer in the oriented state. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
