Biodegradable, amphiphilic, four‐armed poly(?‐caprolactone)‐block‐poly(ethylene oxide) (PCL‐b‐PEO) copolymers were synthesized by ring‐opening polymerization of ethylene oxide in the presence of four‐armed poly(?‐caprolactone) (PCL) with terminal OH groups with diethylzinc (ZnEt2) as a catalyst. The chemical structure of PCL‐b‐PEO copolymer was confirmed by 1H NMR and 13C NMR. The hydroxyl end groups of the four‐armed PCL were successfully substituted by PEO blocks in the copolymer. The monomodal profile of molecular weight distribution by gel permeation chromatography provided further evidence for the four‐armed architecture of the copolymer. Physicochemical properties of the four‐armed block copolymers differed from their starting four‐armed PCL precursor. The melting points were between those of PCL precursor and linear poly(ethylene glycol). The length of the outer PEO blocks exhibited an obvious effect on the crystallizability of the block copolymer. The degree of swelling of the four‐armed block copolymer increased with PEO length and PEO content. The micelle formation of the four‐armed block copolymer was examined by a fluorescent probe technique, and the existence of the critical micelle concentration (cmc) confirmed the amphiphilic nature of the resulting copolymer. The cmc value increased with increasing PEO length. The absolute cmc values were higher than those for linear amphiphilic block copolymers. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Novel thermoplastic elastomers based on multi‐block copolymers of poly(l ‐lysine) (PLL), poly(N‐ε‐carbobenzyloxyl‐l ‐lysine) (PZLL), poly(ε‐caprolactone) (PCL), and poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) were synthesized by combination of ring‐opening polymerization (ROP) and chain extension via l ‐lysine diisocyanate (LDI). SEC and 1H NMR were used to characterize the multi‐block copolymers, with number‐average molecular weights between 38,900 and 73,400 g/mol. Multi‐block copolymers were proved to be good thermoplastic elastomers with Young's modulus between 5 and 60 MPa and tensile strain up to 1300%. The PLL‐containing multi‐block copolymers were electrospun into non‐woven mats that exhibited high surface hydrophilicity and wettability. The polypeptide–polyester materials were biocompatible, bio‐based and environment‐friendly for promising wide applications. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. Per‐2,3‐acetyl‐β‐cyclodextrin with seven primary hydroxyl groups was synthesized by selective modification and used as multifunctional initiator for the ring‐opening polymerization of ε‐caprolactone (CL). Well‐defined β‐cyclodextrin‐centered seven‐arm star poly(ε‐caprolactone)s (CDSPCLs) with narrow molecular weight distributions (≤1.15) have been successfully prepared in the presence of Sn(Oct)2 at 120 °C. The molecular weight of CDSPCLs was characterized by end group 1H NMR analyses and size‐exclusion chromatography (SEC), which could be well controlled by the molar ratio of the monomer to the initiator. Furthermore, amphiphilic seven‐arm star poly(ε‐caprolactone‐b‐ethylene glycol)s (CDSPCL‐b‐PEGs) were synthesized by the coupling reaction of CDSPCLs with carboxyl‐terminated mPEGs. 1H NMR and SEC analyses confirmed the expected star block structures. Differential scanning calorimetry analyses suggested that the melting temperature (Tm), the crystallization temperature (Tc), and the crystallinity degree (Xc) of CDSPCLs all increased with the increasing of the molecular weight, and were lower than that of the linear poly(ε‐caprolactone). As for CDSPCL‐b‐PEGs, the Tc and Tm of the PCL blocks were significantly influenced by the PEG segments in the copolymers. Moreover, these amphiphilic star block copolymers could self‐assemble into spherical micelles with the particle size ranging from 10 to 40 nm. Their micellization behaviors were characterized by dynamic light scattering and transmission electron microscopy. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Biodegradable, amphiphilic, diblock poly(ε‐caprolactone)‐block‐poly(ethylene glycol) (PCL‐b‐PEG), triblock poly(ε‐caprolactone)‐block‐poly(ethylene glycol)‐block‐poly(ε‐caprolactone) (PCL‐b‐PEG‐b‐PCL), and star shaped copolymers were synthesized by ring opening polymerization of ε‐caprolactone in the presence of poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether or poly(ethylene glycol) or star poly(ethylene glycol) and potassium hexamethyldisilazide as a catalyst. Polymerizations were carried out in toluene at room temperature to yield monomodal polymers of controlled molecular weight. The chemical structure of the copolymers was investigated by 1H and 13C NMR. The formation of block copolymers was confirmed by 13C NMR and DSC investigations. The effects of copolymer composition and molecular structure on the physical properties were investigated by GPC and DSC. For the same PCL chain length, the materials obtained in the case of linear copolymers are viscous whereas in the case of star copolymer solid materials are obtained with low Tg and Tm temperatures. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This article discusses an effective route to prepare amphiphilic diblock copolymers containing a poly(ethylene oxide) block and a polyolefin block that includes semicrystalline thermoplastics, such as polyethylene and syndiotactic polystyrene (s‐PS), and elastomers, such as poly(ethylene‐co‐1‐octene) and poly(ethylene‐co‐styrene) random copolymers. The broad choice of polyolefin blocks provides the amphiphilic copolymers with a wide range of thermal properties from high melting temperature ~270 °C to low glass‐transition temperature ~?60 °C. The chemistry involves two reaction steps, including the preparation of a borane group‐terminated polyolefin by the combination of a metallocene catalyst and a borane chain‐transfer agent as well as the interconversion of a borane terminal group to an anionic (? O?K+) terminal group for the subsequent ring‐opening polymerization of ethylene oxide. The overall reaction process resembles a transformation from the metallocene polymerization of α‐olefins to the ring‐opening polymerization of ethylene oxide. The well‐defined reaction mechanisms in both steps provide the diblock copolymer with controlled molecular structure in terms of composition, molecular weight, moderate molecular weight distribution (Mw/Mn < 2.5), and absence of homopolymer. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The synthesis of poly(p‐phenylene methylene) (PPM)‐based block copolymers such as poly(p‐phenylene methylene)‐b‐poly(ε‐caprolactone) and poly(p‐phenylene methylene)‐b‐polytetrahydrofuran by mechanistic transformation was described. First, precursor PPM was synthesized by acid‐catalyzed polymerization of tribenzylborate at 16 °C. Then, this polymer was used as macroinitiators in either ring‐opening polymerization of ε‐caprolactone or cationic ring‐opening polymerization of tetrahydrofuran to yield respective block copolymers. The structures of the prepolymer and block copolymers were characterized by GPC and 1H NMR investigations. The composition of block copolymers as determined by 1H NMR and TGA analysis was found to be in very good agreement. The thermal behavior and surface morphology of the copolymers were also investigated, respectively, by differential scanning calorimetry and atomic force microscopy measurements, and the contribution of the major soft segment has been observed. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Nontoxic and biodegradable poly(?‐caprolactone)‐b‐poly(ethylene glycol)‐b‐poly(?‐caprolactone) triblock copolymers were synthesized by the solution polymerization of ?‐caprolactone in the presence of poly(ethylene glycol). The chemical structure of the resulting triblock copolymer was characterized with 1H NMR and gel permeation chromatography. In aqueous solutions of the triblock copolymers, the micellization and sol–gel‐transition behaviors were investigated. The experimental results showed that the unimer‐to‐micelle transition did occur. In a sol–gel‐transition phase diagram obtained by the vial‐tilting method, the boundary curve shifted to the left, and the gel regions expanded with the increasing molecular weight of the poly(?‐caprolactone) block. In addition, the hydrodynamic diameters of the micelles were almost independent of the investigated temperature (25–55 °C). The atomic force microscopy results showed that spherical micelles formed at the copolymer concentration of 2.5 × 10?4 g/mL, whereas necklace‐like and worm‐like shapes were adopted when the concentration was 0.25 g/mL, which was high enough to form a gel. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Linear and four‐armed poly(l ‐lactide)‐block‐poly(d ‐lactide) (PLLA‐b‐PDLA) block copolymers are synthesized by ring‐opening polymerization of d ‐lactide on the end hydroxyl of linear and four‐armed PLLA prepolymers. DSC results indicate that the melting temperature and melting enthalpies of poly (lactide) stereocomplex in the copolymers are obviously lower than corresponding linear and four‐armed PLLA/PDLA blends. Compared with the four‐armed PLLA‐b‐PDLA copolymer, the similar linear PLLA‐b‐PDLA shows higher melting temperature (212.3 °C) and larger melting enthalpy (70.6 J g?1). After these copolymers blend with additional neat PLAs, DSC, and WAXD results show that the stereocomplex formation between free PLA molecular chain and enantiomeric PLA block is the major stereocomplex formation. In the linear copolymer/linear PLA blends, the stereocomplex crystallites (sc) as well as homochiral crystallites (hc) form in the copolymer/PLA cast films. However, in the four‐armed copolymer/linear PLA blends, both sc and hc develop in the four‐armed PLLA‐b‐PDLA/PDLA specimen, which means that the stereocomplexation mainly forms between free PDLA molecule and the inside PLLA block, and the outside PDLA block could form some microcrystallites. Although the melting enthalpies of stereocomplexes in the blends are smaller than that of neat copolymers, only two‐thirds of the molecular chains participate in the stereocomplex formation, and the crystallization efficiency strengthens. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Novel biodegradable poly(ester anhydride) block copolymers based on ε‐caprolactone (ε‐CL) and adipic anhydride (AA) were prepared by sequential polymerization. ε‐CL was first initiated by potassium poly(ethylene glycol)ate and polymerized into active chains (PCL‐O?K+), which were then used to initiate the ring‐opening polymerization of AA. The effects of the AA feed ratio, solvent polarity, monomer concentration, and temperature on sequential polymerization were investigated. The copolymers, obtained under different conditions, were characterized by Fourier transform infrared, 1H NMR, gel permeation chromatography (GPC), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The GPC results showed that the weight‐average molecular weights of the block copolymers were approximately 6.0 × 104. The DSC results indicated the immiscibility of the two components. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 41: 1511–1520, 2003  相似文献

Biodegradable star‐shaped poly(ethylene glycol)‐block‐poly(lactide) copolymers were synthesized by ring‐opening polymerization of lactide, using star poly(ethylene glycol) as an initiator and potassium hexamethyldisilazide as a catalyst. Polymerizations were carried out in toluene at room temperature. Two series of three‐ and four‐armed PEG‐PLA copolymers were synthesized and characterized by gel permeation chromatography (GPC) as well as 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy. The polymerization under the used conditions is very fast, yielding copolymers of controlled molecular weight and tailored molecular architecture. The chemical structure of the copolymers investigated by 1H and 13C NMR indicates the formation of block copolymers. The monomodal profile of molecular weight distribution by GPC provided further evidence of controlled and defined star‐shaped copolymers as well as the absence of cyclic oligomeric species. The effects of copolymer composition and lactide stereochemistry on the physical properties were investigated by GPC and differential scanning calorimetry. For the same PLA chain length, the materials obtained in the case of linear copolymers are more viscous, whereas in the case of star copolymer, solid materials are obtained with reduction in their Tg and Tm temperatures. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The poly(3‐hydroxbutyrate‐co‐3‐hydroxyvalerate)/poly(ε‐caprolactone) block copolymers (PHCLs) with three different weight ratios of PCL blocks (38%, named PHCL‐38; 53%, named PHCL‐53; and 60%, named PHCL‐60) were synthesized by using PHBV with two hydroxyl end groups to initiate ring‐opening polymerization of ε‐caprolactone. During DSC cooling process, melt crystallization of PHCL‐53 at relatively high cooling rates (9, 12, and 15 °C min?1) and PHCL‐60 at all the selected cooling rates corresponded to PCL blocks so that PHCL‐53 and PHCL‐60 were used to study the nonisothermal crystallization behaviors of PCL blocks. The kinetics of PCL blocks in PHCL‐53 and PHCL‐60 under nonisothermal crystallization conditions were analyzed by Mo equation. Mo equation was successful in describing the nonisothermal crystallization kinetics of PCL blocks in PHCLs. Crystallization activation energy were estimated using Kissinger's method. The results of kinetic parameters showed that both blocks crystallized more difficultly than corresponding homopolymers. With the increase of PCL content, the crystallization rate of PCL block increased gradually. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys, 2010  相似文献

A series of amphiphilic biodegradable and biocompatible poly(p‐dioxanone)‐grafted poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) copolymers with well‐defined structure were obtained by a three‐step synthesis based on the “grafting from” concept. The first step (protection step), called the partial silylation of PVA hydroxyl groups, was accomplished by 1,1,1,3,3,3‐hexamethyldisilazane and catalyst chlorotrimethylsilane in dimethyl sulfoxide using THF as cosolvent. The second step was the ring‐opening polymerization of p‐dioxanone (PDO) initiated from the remaining OH groups of the partially silylated PVA. Finally, a deprotection step was followed: the silylether group was deprotected easily under very mild conditions. The synthetic conditions of the first two steps were investigated, and the structures of polymers formed in each step were characterized by various analytical methods. The results showed that the molecular structure of the PVA‐g‐PPDO could be controlled easily by the degree of silylation and the feed ratio. In addition, the micellization of amphiphilic PVA‐g‐PPDO copolymers in water was proved by fluorescence spectra and dynamic light scattering, and the relationship between structural parameters of copolymers and micellar properties was studied preliminarily. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. An Erratum has been published for this article in J. Polym. Sci. Part A: Polym. Chem. (2004) 42(22) 5845 New multiblock copolymers derived from poly(L‐lactic acid) (PLLA) and poly(ε‐caprolactone) (PCL) were prepared with the coupling reaction between PLLA and PCL oligomers with ? NCO terminals. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), 13C NMR, and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) were used to characterize the copolymers and the results showed that PLLA and PCL were coupled by the reaction between ? NCO groups at the end of the PCL and ? OH (or ? COOH) groups at the end of the PLLA. DSC data indicated that the different compositions of PLLA and PCL had an influence on the thermal and crystallization properties including the glass‐transition temperature (Tg), melting temperature (TM), crystallizing temperature (Tc), melting enthalpy (ΔHm), crystallizing enthalpy (ΔHc), and crystallinity. Gel permeation chromatography (GPC) was employed to study the effect of the composition of PLLA and PCL and reaction time on the molecular weight and the molecular weight distribution of the copolymers. The weight‐average molecular weight of PLLA–PCL multiblock copolymers was up to 180,000 at a composition of 60% PLLA and 40% PCL, whereas that of the homopolymer of PLLA was only 14,000. A polarized optical microscope was used to observe the crystalline morphology of copolymers; the results showed that all polymers exhibited a spherulitic morphology. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Well‐defined diblock and triblock copolymers composed of poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) and poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) were successfully synthesized through the reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer polymerization of N‐isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM) with PEO capped with one or two dithiobenzoyl groups as a macrotransfer agent. 1H NMR, Fourier transform infrared, and gel permeation chromatography instruments were used to characterize the block copolymers obtained. The results showed that the diblock and triblock copolymers had well‐defined structures and narrow molecular weight distributions (weight‐average molecular weight/number‐average molecular weight < 1.2), and the molecular weight of the PNIPAM block in the diblock and triblock copolymers could be controlled by the initial molar ratio of NIPAM to dithiobenzoate‐terminated PEO and the NIPAM conversion. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A monomode microwave reactor was used for the synthesis of designed star‐shaped polymers, which were based on dipentaerythritol with six crystallizable arms of poly(ε‐caprolactone)‐b‐poly(L ‐lactide) (PCL‐b‐PLLA) copolymer via a two‐step ring‐opening polymerization (ROP). The effects of irradiation conditions on the molecular weight were studied. Microwave heating accelerated the ROP of CL and LLA, compared with the conventional heating method. The resultant hexa‐armed polymers were fully characterized by means of FTIR, 1H NMR spectrum, and GPC. The investigation of thermal properties and crystalline behaviors indicated that the crystalline behaviors of polymers were largely depended on the macromolecular architecture and the length of the block chains. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Applications of metal‐free living cationic polymerization of vinyl ethers using HCl · Et2O are reported. Product of poly(vinyl ether)s possessing functional end groups such as hydroxyethyl groups with predicted molecular weights was used as a macroinitiator in activated monomer cationic polymerization of ε‐caprolactone (CL) with HCl · Et2O as a ring‐opening polymerization. This combination method is a metal‐free polymerization using HCl · Et2O. The formation of poly(isobutyl vinyl ether)‐b‐poly(ε‐caprolactone) (PIBVE‐b‐PCL) and poly(tert‐butyl vinyl ether)‐b‐poly(ε‐caprolactone) (PTBVE‐b‐PCL) from two vinyl ethers and CL was successful. Therefore, we synthesized novel amphiphilic, biocompatible, and biodegradable block copolymers comprised polyvinyl alcohol and PCL, namely PVA‐b‐PCL by transformation of acid hydrolysis of tert‐butoxy moiety of PTBVE in PTBVE‐b‐PCL. The synthesized copolymers showed well‐defined structure and narrow molecular weight distribution. The structure of resulting block copolymers was confirmed by 1H NMR, size exclusion chromatography, and differential scanning calorimetry. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Biodegradable poly(tert‐butyl acrylate)–poly[(R)‐3‐hydroxybutyrate]–poly (tert‐butyl acrylate) triblock copolymers based on bacterial poly[(R)‐3‐hydroxybutyrate] (PHB) were synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization. The chain architectures of the triblock copolymers were confirmed by 1H NMR and 13C NMR spectra. Gel permeation chromatography analysis was used to estimate the molecular weight characteristics and lengths of the PHB and poly(tert‐butyl acrylate) blocks of the copolymers. The thermal properties of the copolymers were studied by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). TGA showed that the triblock copolymers underwent stepwise thermal degradation and had better thermal stability than their respective homopolymers, whereas DSC analyses showed that a microphase‐separation structure was formed only in the triblock copolymers with the longer PHB block. As a similar result, from wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction experimentation, the crystalline phase of PHB could not be seen evidently in the triblock copolymers with the shorter PHB block. The enzymatic hydrolysis of the copolymer films was carried at 37 °C and pH 7.4 in a potassium phosphate buffer with an extracellular PHB depolymerase from Penicillum sp. The biodegradability of the triblock copolymers increased with an increase in the PHB block content. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 43: 4857–4869, 2005  相似文献

Four generations of new amphiphilic thermoresponsive linear‐dendritic block copolymers (LDBCs) with a linear poly(N‐vinylcaprolactam) (PNVCL) block and a dendritic poly(benzyl ether) block are synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of N‐vinylcaprolactam (NVCL) using dendritic poly(benzyl ether) chlorides as initiators. The copolymers have been characterized by 1H NMR, FTIR, and GPC showing controlled molecular weight and narrow molecular weight distribution (PDI ≤ 1.25). Their self‐organization in aqueous media and thermoresponsive property are highly dependent on the generation of dendritic poly(benzyl ether) block. It is observed for the LDBCs that the self‐assembled morphology changes from irregularly spherical micelles, vesicles, rod‐like large compound vesicles (LCVs), to the coexistence of spherical micelles and rod‐like LCVs, as the generation of the dendritic poly(benzyl ether) increases. The results of a cytotoxicity study using an MTT assay method with L929 cells show that the LDBCs are biocompatible. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym.
