We develop a functional calculus for both bounded and unbounded operators in Hilbert spaces based on a simple inequality related to polynomial functions of a square matrix and involving the numerical range. We present some applications in different areas of mathematics.  相似文献

In this paper we use the notion of slice monogenic functions [F. Colombo, I. Sabadini, D.C. Struppa, Slice monogenic functions, Israel J. Math., in press] to define a new functional calculus for an n-tuple T of not necessarily commuting operators. This calculus is different from the one discussed in [B. Jefferies, Spectral Properties of Noncommuting Operators, Lecture Notes in Math., vol. 1843, Springer-Verlag, Berlin, 2004] and it allows the explicit construction of the eigenvalue equation for the n-tuple T based on a new notion of spectrum for T. Our functional calculus is consistent with the Riesz-Dunford calculus in the case of a single operator.  相似文献

We establish a functional calculus, with nice properties, for one and several continuous operators on some non-normable locally convex spaces, more specifically, for operators on the space of entire functions and on other power series spaces. In particular we obtain spectral mapping theorems. The calculus rests on Schauder decompositions for the spaces under consideration, which are of independent interest.  相似文献

We investigate the effects of having an absolute continuity relation between the time-ordering measures in Feynman's operational calculus. In particular, we obtain some theorems concerning the formation of functions of several noncommuting operators or operator-valued functions under specific absolute continuity assumptions on the time-ordering measures.

The new notion of slice monogenic functions introduced in the paper [F. Colombo, I. Sabadini, D.C. Struppa, Slice monogenic functions, Israel J. Math. 171 (2009) 385-403] led us to define a new functional calculus for an n-tuple of not necessarily commuting operators, see [F. Colombo, I. Sabadini, D.C. Struppa, A new functional calculus for noncommuting operators, J. Funct. Anal. 254 (2008) 2255-2274]. In this paper we prove a Cauchy formula with slice monogenic kernel for the slice monogenic functions. This new Cauchy formula is the fundamental tool to prove that our functional calculus apply to a more general setting. Moreover, we deduce some fundamental properties of the functional calculus, for example: some algebraic properties, the Spectral Mapping Theorem and the Spectral Radius Theorem.  相似文献

The Weyl calculus is a means of constructing functions of a system of hermitian operators which do not necessarily commute with each other. This note gives a new proof of a formula, due to E. Nelson, for the Weyl calculus associated with a system of hermitian matrices.

It is well-known that -sectorial operators generally do not admit a bounded H calculus over the right half-plane. In contrast to this, we prove that the H calculus is bounded over any class of functions whose Fourier spectrum is contained in some interval [ε,σ] with 0<ε<σ<∞. The constant bounding this calculus grows as as and this growth is sharp over all Banach space operators of the class under consideration. It follows from these estimates that -sectorial operators admit a bounded calculus over the Besov algebra of the right half-plane. We also discuss the link between -sectorial operators and bounded Tadmor-Ritt operators.  相似文献

We prove several spectral radius inequalities for sums, products, and commutators of Hilbert space operators. Pinching inequalities for the spectral radius are also obtained.

We define a smooth functional calculus for a non-commuting tuple of (unbounded) operators Aj on a Banach space with real spectra and resolvents with temperate growth, by means of an iterated Cauchy formula. The construction is also extended to tuples of more general operators allowing smooth functional calculii. We also discuss the relation to the case with commuting operators.  相似文献

The paper is devoted to the maximum principles for functional equations in the space of measurable essentially bounded functions. The necessary and sufficient conditions for validity of corresponding maximum principles are obtained in a form of theorems about functional inequalities similar to the classical theorems about differential inequalities of the Vallee Poussin type. Assertions about the strong maximum principle are proposed. All results are also true for difference equations, which can be considered as a particular case of functional equations. The problems of validity of the maximum principles are reduced to nonoscillation properties and disconjugacy of functional equations. Note that zeros and nonoscillation of a solution in a space of discontinuous functions are defined in this paper. It is demonstrated that nonoscillation properties of functional equations are connected with the spectral radius of a corresponding operator acting in the space of essentially bounded functions. Simple sufficient conditions of nonoscillation, disconjugacy and validity of the maximum principles are proposed. The known nonoscillation results for equation in space of functions of one variable follow as a particular cases of these assertions. It should be noted that corresponding coefficient tests obtained on this basis cannot be improved. Various applications to nonoscillation, disconjugacy and the maximum principles for partial differential equations are proposed.  相似文献

In this paper we introduce and study a functional calculus for bicomplex linear bounded operators. The study is based on the decomposition of bicomplex numbers and of linear operators using the two nonreal idempotents. We show that, due to the presence of zero divisors in the bicomplex numbers, the spectrum of a bounded operator is unbounded. We therefore introduce a different spectrum (called reduced spectrum) which is bounded and turns out to be the right tool to construct the bicomplex holomorphic functional calculus. Finally we provide some properties of the calculus.  相似文献

We study the numerical index of a Banach space from the isomorphic point of view, that is, we investigate the values of the numerical index which can be obtained by renorming the space. The set of these values is always an interval which contains in the real case and in the complex case. Moreover, for ``most' Banach spaces the least upper bound of this interval is as large as possible, namely .

Access to advanced study in mathematics, in general, and to calculus, in particular, depends in part on the conceptual architecture of these knowledge domains. In this paper, we outline an alternative conceptual architecture for elementary calculus. Our general strategy is to separate basic concepts from the particular advanced techniques used in their definition and exposition. We develop the beginning concepts of differential and integral calculus using only concepts and skills found in secondary algebra and geometry. It is our underlining objective to strengthen students' knowledge of these topics in an effort to prepare them for advanced mathematics study. The purpose of this reconstruction is not to alter the teaching of limit-based calculus but rather to affect students' learning and understanding of mathematics in general by introducing key concepts during secondary mathematics courses. This approach holds the promise of strengthening more students' understanding of limit-based calculus and enhancing their potential for success in post-secondary mathematics.  相似文献

Block numerical ranges of matrix polynomials, especially the quadratic numerical range, are considered. The main results concern spectral inclusion, boundedness of the block numerical range, an estimate of the resolvent in terms of the quadratic numerical range, geometrical properties of the quadratic numerical range, and inclusion between block numerical ranges of the matrix polynomials for refined block decompositions. As an application, we connect the quadratic numerical range with the localization of the spectrum of matrix polynomials.  相似文献

In this paper, we introduce some integral transforms that map slice monogenic functions to monogenic functions. We then show that one of these integral transforms, which is based on the Cauchy formula of slice monogenic functions, is useful to define a functional calculus depending on a parameter for n‐tuples of bounded operators.
