In this paper we investigate the existence of “partially” isometric immersions. These are maps \({f:M\rightarrow \mathbb{R}^q}\) which, for a given Riemannian manifold M, are isometries on some sub-bundle \({\mathcal{H}\subset TM}\). The concept of free maps, which is essential in the Nash–Gromov theory of isometric immersions, is replaced here by that of \({\mathcal{H}}\) –free maps, i.e. maps whose restriction to \({\mathcal{H}}\) is free. We prove, under suitable conditions on the dimension q of the Euclidean space, that \({\mathcal{H}}\) –free maps are generic and we provide, for the smallest possible value of q, explicit expressions for \({\mathcal{H}}\) –free maps in the following three settings: 1–dimensional distributions in \({\mathbb{R}^2}\), Lagrangian distributions of completely integrable systems, Hamiltonian distributions of a particular kind of Poisson Bracket.  相似文献

This paper is a follow-up contribution to our work (Sarkar in J Oper Theory, 73:433–441, 2015) where we discussed some invariant subspace results for contractions on Hilbert spaces. Here we extend the results of (Sarkar in J Oper Theory, 73:433–441, 2015) to the context of n-tuples of bounded linear operators on Hilbert spaces. Let \(T = (T_1, \ldots , T_n)\) be a pure commuting co-spherically contractive n-tuple of operators on a Hilbert space \({\mathcal {H}}\) and \({\mathcal {S}}\) be a non-trivial closed subspace of \({\mathcal {H}}\). One of our main results states that: \({\mathcal {S}}\) is a joint T-invariant subspace if and only if there exists a partially isometric operator \(\Pi \in {\mathcal {B}}(H^2_n({\mathcal {E}}), {\mathcal {H}})\) such that \({\mathcal {S}}= \Pi H^2_n({\mathcal {E}})\), where \(H^2_n\) is the Drury–Arveson space and \({\mathcal {E}}\) is a coefficient Hilbert space and \(T_i \Pi = \Pi M_{z_i}\), \(i = 1, \ldots , n\). In particular, it follows that a shift invariant subspace of a “nice” reproducing kernel Hilbert space over the unit ball in \({{\mathbb {C}}}^n\) is the range of a “multiplier” with closed range. Our work addresses the case of joint shift invariant subspaces of the Hardy space and the weighted Bergman spaces over the unit ball in \({{\mathbb {C}}}^n\).  相似文献

The \(L^1\)-Sobolev inequality states that for compactly supported functions u on the Euclidean n-space, the \(L^{n/(n-1)}\)-norm of a compactly supported function is controlled by the \(L^1\)-norm of its gradient. The generalization to differential forms (due to Lanzani and Stein and Bourgain and Brezis) is recent, and states that a the \(L^{n/(n-1)}\)-norm of a compactly supported differential h-form is controlled by the \(L^1\)-norm of its exterior differential du and its exterior codifferential \(\delta u\) (in special cases the \(L^1\)-norm must be replaced by the \(\mathcal H^1\)-Hardy norm). We shall extend this result to Heisenberg groups in the framework of an appropriate complex of differential forms.  相似文献

Let \(\Omega \) be a compact Riemannian manifold with smooth boundary and let \(u_t\) be the solution of the heat equation on \(\Omega \), having constant unit initial data \(u_0=1\) and Dirichlet boundary conditions (\(u_t=0\) on the boundary, at all times). If at every time t the normal derivative of \(u_t\) is a constant function on the boundary, we say that \(\Omega \) has the constant flow property. This gives rise to an overdetermined parabolic problem, and our aim is to classify the manifolds having this property. In fact, if the metric is analytic, we prove that \(\Omega \) has the constant flow property if and only if it is an isoparametric tube, that is, it is a solid tube of constant radius around a closed, smooth, minimal submanifold, with the additional property that all equidistants to the boundary (parallel hypersurfaces) are smooth and have constant mean curvature. Hence, the constant flow property can be viewed as an analytic counterpart to the isoparametric property. Finally, we relate the constant flow property with other overdetermined problems, in particular, the well-known Serrin problem on the mean-exit time function, and discuss a counterexample involving minimal free boundary immersions into Euclidean balls.  相似文献

In this paper, we propose a Ward-like hierarchical clustering algorithm including spatial/geographical constraints. Two dissimilarity matrices \(D_0\) and \(D_1\) are inputted, along with a mixing parameter \(\alpha \in [0,1]\). The dissimilarities can be non-Euclidean and the weights of the observations can be non-uniform. The first matrix gives the dissimilarities in the “feature space” and the second matrix gives the dissimilarities in the “constraint space”. The criterion minimized at each stage is a convex combination of the homogeneity criterion calculated with \(D_0\) and the homogeneity criterion calculated with \(D_1\). The idea is then to determine a value of \(\alpha \) which increases the spatial contiguity without deteriorating too much the quality of the solution based on the variables of interest i.e. those of the feature space. This procedure is illustrated on a real dataset using the R package ClustGeo.  相似文献

In this paper, we extend the well-known result “the predual of Hardy space \(H^1\) is VMO” to the product setting, associated with differential operators. Let \(L_i\), \(i = 1, 2\), be the infinitesimal generators of the analytic semigroups \(\{e^{-tL_i}\}\) on \(L^2({\mathbb {R}})\). Assume that the kernels of the semigroups \(\{e^{-tL_i}\}\) satisfy the Gaussian upper bounds. We introduce the VMO spaces VMO\(_{L_1, L_2}(\mathbb {R}\times \mathbb {R})\) associated with operators \(L_1\) and \(L_2\) on the product domain \(\mathbb {R}\times \mathbb {R}\), then show that the dual space of VMO\(_{L_1, L_2}(\mathbb {R}\times \mathbb {R})\) is the Hardy space \(H^1_{L_1^*, L_2^*}(\mathbb {R}\times \mathbb {R})\) associated with the adjoint operators \(L^*_1\) and \(L^*_2\).  相似文献

A translation surface in Euclidean space is a surface that is the sum of two regular curves \(\alpha \) and \(\beta \). In this paper we characterize all minimal translation surfaces. In the case that \(\alpha \) and \(\beta \) are non-planar curves, we prove that the curvature \(\kappa \) and the torsion \(\tau \) of both curves must satisfy the equation \(\kappa ^2 \tau = C\) where C is constant. We show that, up to a rigid motion and a dilation in the Euclidean space and, up to reparametrizations of the curves generating the surfaces, all minimal translation surfaces are described by two real parameters \(a,b\in \mathbb {R}\) where the surface is of the form \(\phi (s,t)=\beta _{a,b}(s)+\beta _{a,b}(t)\).  相似文献

In the past few decades maximal regularity theory has successfully been applied to moving boundary problems. The basic idea is to reduce the system with varying domains to one in a fixed domain. This is done by a transformation, the so-called Hanzawa transformation, and yields a typically nonlocal and nonlinear coupled system of (evolution) equations. Well-posedness results can then often be established as soon as it is proved that the relevant linearization is the generator of an analytic semigroup or admits maximal regularity. To implement this program, it is necessary to somehow parametrize to space of boundaries/domains (typically the space of compact hypersurfaces \(\Gamma \) in \({\mathbb {R}}^n\), in the Euclidean setting). This has traditionally been achieved by means of the already mentioned Hanzawa transformation. The approach, while successful, requires the introduction of a smooth manifold \(\Gamma _\infty \) close to the manifold \(\Gamma _0\) in which one cares to linearize. This prevents one to use coordinates in which \(\Gamma _0\) lies at their “center”. As a result formulæ tend to contain terms that would otherwise not be present were one able to linearize in a neighborhood emanating from \(\Gamma _0\) instead of from \(\Gamma _\infty \). In this paper it is made use of flows (curves of diffeomorphisms) to obtain a general form of the relevant linearization in combination with an alternative coordinatization of the manifold of hypersurfaces, which circumvents the need for the introduction of a “phantom” reference manifold \(\Gamma _\infty \) by, in its place, making use of a “phantom geometry” on \(\Gamma _0\). The upshot is a clear insight into the structure of the linearization, simplified calculations, and simpler formulæ for the resulting linear operators, which are useful in applications.  相似文献

A scaling on some space is a measurable action of the group of positive real numbers. A measure on a measurable space equipped with a scaling is said to be \(\alpha \)-homogeneous for some nonzero real number \(\alpha \) if the mass of any measurable set scaled by any factor \(t > 0\) is the multiple \(t^{-\alpha }\) of the set’s original mass. It is shown rather generally that given an \(\alpha \)-homogeneous measure on a measurable space there is a measurable bijection between the space and the Cartesian product of a subset of the space and the positive real numbers (that is, a “system of polar coordinates”) such that the push-forward of the \(\alpha \)-homogeneous measure by this bijection is the product of a probability measure on the first component (that is, on the “angular” component) and an \(\alpha \)-homogeneous measure on the positive half line (that is, on the “radial” component). This result is applied to the intensity measures of Poisson processes that arise in Lévy-Khinchin-Itô-like representations of infinitely divisible random elements. It is established that if a strictly stable random element in a convex cone admits a series representation as the sum of points of a Poisson process, then it necessarily has a LePage representation as the sum of i.i.d. random elements of the cone scaled by the successive points of an independent unit-intensity Poisson process on the positive half line each raised to the power \(-\frac{1}{\alpha }\).  相似文献

Given numbers \({n,s \in \mathbb{N}}\), \({n \geq 2}\), and the \({n}\)th-degree monic Chebyshev polynomial of the first kind \({\widehat T_n(x)}\), the polynomial system “induced” by \({\widehat T_n(x)}\) is the system of orthogonal polynomials \({\{p_{k}^{n,s} \}}\) corresponding to the modified measure \({d \sigma^{n,s}(x)=\widehat T^{2s}_n(x) d\sigma(x)}\), where \({d\sigma(x)=1/\sqrt{1-x^{2}}dx}\) is the Chebyshev measure of the first kind. Here we are concerned with the problem of determining the coefficients in the three-term recurrence relation for the polynomials \({p^{n,s}_{k}}\). The desired coefficients are obtained analytically in a closed form.  相似文献

This paper considers filtered polynomial approximations on the unit sphere \(\mathbb {S}^d\subset \mathbb {R}^{d+1}\), obtained by truncating smoothly the Fourier series of an integrable function f with the help of a “filter” h, which is a real-valued continuous function on \([0,\infty )\) such that \(h(t)=1\) for \(t\in [0,1]\) and \(h(t)=0\) for \(t\ge 2\). The resulting “filtered polynomial approximation” (a spherical polynomial of degree \(2L-1\)) is then made fully discrete by approximating the inner product integrals by an N-point cubature rule of suitably high polynomial degree of precision, giving an approximation called “filtered hyperinterpolation”. In this paper we require that the filter h and all its derivatives up to \(\lfloor \tfrac{d-1}{2}\rfloor \) are absolutely continuous, while its right and left derivatives of order \(\lfloor \tfrac{d+1}{2}\rfloor \) exist everywhere and are of bounded variation. Under this assumption we show that for a function f in the Sobolev space \(W^s_p(\mathbb {S}^d),\ 1\le p\le \infty \), both approximations are of the optimal order \( L^{-s}\), in the first case for \(s>0\) and in the second fully discrete case for \(s>d/p\), conditions which in both cases cannot be weakened.  相似文献

A \(\lambda \)-translating soliton with density vector \(\mathbf {v}\) is a surface \(\varSigma \) in Euclidean space \(\mathbb {R}^3\) whose mean curvature H satisfies \(2H=2\lambda +\langle N,\mathbf {v}\rangle \), where N is the Gauss map of \(\varSigma \). In this article, we study the shape of a compact \(\lambda \)-translating soliton in terms of its boundary. If \(\varGamma \) is a given closed curve, we deduce under what conditions on \(\lambda \) there exists a compact \(\lambda \)-translating soliton \(\varSigma \) with boundary \(\varGamma \) and we provide estimates of the surface area depending on the height of \(\varSigma \). Finally, we study the shape of \(\varSigma \) related with the geometry of \(\varGamma \), in particular, we give conditions that assert that \(\varSigma \) inherits the symmetries of its boundary \(\varGamma \).  相似文献

In this paper, the \(p\)-affine capacity is introduced for \(1<p<n\) and then developed to discover the upper and lower isocapacitary inequalities that strengthen optimally both the Maz’ya \(p\)-isocapacitary inequality and the Lutwak–Yang–Zhang \(L_p\) affine isoperimetric inequality over the \(n\)-dimensional Euclidean space \({\mathbb {R}}^{n}\).  相似文献

In this paper, we obtain an analogue of Toponogov theorem in dimension 3 for compact manifolds \(M^3\) with nonnegative Ricci curvature and strictly convex boundary \(\partial M\). Here we obtain a sharp upper bound for the length \(L(\partial \Sigma )\) of the boundary \(\partial \Sigma \) of a free boundary minimal surface \(\Sigma ^2\) in \(M^3\) in terms of the genus of \(\Sigma \) and the number of connected components of \(\partial \Sigma \), assuming \(\Sigma \) has index one. After, under a natural hypothesis on the geometry of M along \(\partial M\), we prove that if \(L(\partial \Sigma )\) saturates the respective upper bound, then \(M^3\) is isometric to the Euclidean 3-ball and \(\Sigma ^2\) is isometric to the Euclidean disk. In particular, we get a sharp upper bound for the area of \(\Sigma \), when \(M^3\) is a strictly convex body in \(\mathbb {R}^3\), which is saturated only on the Euclidean 3-balls (by the Euclidean disks). We also consider similar results for free boundary stable CMC surfaces.  相似文献

Let M be a 3-manifold with torus boundary components \(T_{1}\) and \(T_2\). Let \(\phi :T_{1} \rightarrow T_{2}\) be a homeomorphism, \(M_\phi \) the manifold obtained from M by gluing \(T_{1}\) to \(T_{2}\) via the map \(\phi \), and T the image of \(T_{1}\) in \(M_\phi \). We show that if \(\phi \) is “sufficiently complicated” then any incompressible or strongly irreducible surface in \(M_\phi \) can be isotoped to be disjoint from T. It follows that every Heegaard splitting of a 3-manifold admitting a “sufficiently complicated” JSJ decomposition is an amalgamation of Heegaard splittings of the components of the JSJ decomposition.  相似文献

We show that the quotient of two caloric functions which vanish on a portion of an \(H^{k+ \alpha }\) regular slit is \(H^{k+ \alpha }\) at the slit, for \(k \ge 2\). In the case \(k=1\), we show that the quotient is in \(H^{1+\alpha }\) if the slit is assumed to be space-time \(C^{1, \alpha }\) regular. This can be thought of as a parabolic analogue of a recent important result in De Silva and Savin (Boundary Harnack estimates in slit domains and applications to thin free boundary problems, 2014), whose ideas inspired us. As an application, we show that the free boundary near a regular point of the parabolic thin obstacle problem studied in Danielli et al. (Optimal regularity and the free boundary in the parabolic Signorini problem. Mem. Am. Math. Soc., 2013) with zero obstacle is \(C^{\infty }\) regular in space and time.  相似文献

We establish an extension of Cantor’s intersection theorem for a \({K}\)-metric space (\({X, d}\)), where \({d}\) is a generalized metric taking values in a solid cone \({K}\) in a Banach space \({E}\). This generalizes a recent result of Alnafei, Radenovi? and Shahzad (2011) obtained for a \({K}\)-metric space over a solid strongly minihedral cone. Next we show that our Cantor’s theorem yields a special case of a generalization of Banach’s contraction principle given very recently by Cvetkovi? and Rako?evi? (2014): we assume that a mapping \({T}\) satisfies the condition “\({d(Tx, Ty) \preceq \Lambda (d(x, y))}\)” for \({x, y \in X}\), where \({\preceq}\) is a partial order induced by \({K}\), and \({\Lambda : E \rightarrow E}\) is a linear positive operator with the spectral radius less than one. We also obtain new characterizations of convergence in the sense of Huang and Zhang in a \({K}\)-metric space.  相似文献

Let \(p(\cdot ):\ {\mathbb {R}}^n\rightarrow (0,\infty )\) be a variable exponent function satisfying the globally log-Hölder continuous condition. In this article, the authors first obtain a decomposition for any distribution of the variable weak Hardy space into “good” and “bad” parts and then prove the following real interpolation theorem between the variable Hardy space \(H^{p(\cdot )}({\mathbb {R}}^n)\) and the space \(L^{\infty }({\mathbb {R}}^n)\): \((H^{p(\cdot )}(\mathbb R^n),L^{\infty }({\mathbb {R}}^n))_{\theta ,\infty }= WH^{p(\cdot )/(1-\theta )}({\mathbb {R}}^n),\quad \mathrm{where}~\theta \in (0,1), \mathrm{and}\) \(WH^{p(\cdot )/(1-\theta )}({\mathbb {R}}^n)\) denotes the variable weak Hardy space. As an application, the variable weak Hardy space \(WH^{p(\cdot )}({\mathbb {R}}^n)\) with \(p_-:=\mathop {\text {ess inf}}\limits _{x\in {{{\mathbb {R}}}^n}}p(x)\in (1,\infty )\) is proved to coincide with the variable Lebesgue space \(WL^{p(\cdot )}({\mathbb {R}}^n)\).  相似文献

The width w of a curve \(\gamma \) in Euclidean space \({\mathbf {R}}^n\) is the infimum of the distances between all pairs of parallel hyperplanes which bound \(\gamma \), while its inradius r is the supremum of the radii of all spheres which are contained in the convex hull of \(\gamma \) and are disjoint from \(\gamma \). We use a mixture of topological and integral geometric techniques, including an application of Borsuk Ulam theorem due to Wienholtz and Crofton’s formulas, to obtain lower bounds on the length of \(\gamma \) subject to constraints on r and w. The special case of closed curves is also considered in each category. Our estimates confirm some conjectures of Zalgaller up to 99% of their stated value, while we also disprove one of them.  相似文献
