In recent years, the understanding and accurate simulation of carbon nanotube-based devices has become very challenging. Conventional simulation tools of microelectronics are necessary to envision the performance and use of nanotube transistors and circuits, but the models need to be refined to properly describe the full complexity of such novel type of devices at the nanoscale. Indeed, many issues such as contact resistance, low dimensional electrostatics and screening effects, as well as nanotube doping or functionalization, demand for more accurate quantum approaches. In this article, we review our recent progress on multiscale simulations which aim at bridging first principles calculations with compact modelling, including the comparison between semi-classical Monte Carlo and quantum transport approaches. Nano-sciences, and in particular nano-physics, constitute a fascinating world of investigations where the experimental challenges are to synthesize, to address (for instance optically or electrically) to explore and promote the remarkable physical properties of new nano-materials. Somehow, one of the most promising realization of nano-sciences lies in carbon-based nano-materials with sp2 covalent bonds. In particular, carbon nanotubes, graphene and more recently ultra-narrow graphene nano-ribbons are envisioned as elementary bricks of the future of nano-electronics. However, prior to such an achievement, the first steps consist in understanding their fundamental electronic properties when they constitute the drain–source channel of a gated device or inter-connexion elements. In this article, we present the richness of challenging experiments combining single-object measurements with an extreme magnetic environment. We demonstrate that an applied magnetic field (B), along with a control of the electrostatic doping, drastically modifies the electronic band structure of a carbon nanotube based transistor. Several examples will be addressed in this presentation. When B is applied parallel to the tube axis, a quantum flux threading the tube induces a giant Aharonov–Bohm conductance modulation mediated by Schottky barriers whose profile is magnetic field dependent. In the perpendicular configuration, the applied magnetic field breaks the revolution symmetry along the circumference and non-conventional Landau states develop in the high field regime. By playing with a carbon nanotube based electronic Fabry–Perot resonator, the field dependence of the resonant states of the cavity reveals the onset of the first Landau state at zero energy. These experiments enlighten the outstanding efficiency of magneto-conductance experiments to probe the electronic properties of carbon based nano-materials. To cite this article: S. Nanot et al., C. Time-dependent fields are a valuable tool to control fundamental quantum phenomena in highly coherent low dimensional electron systems. Carbon nanotubes and graphene are a promising ground for these studies. Here we offer a brief overview of driven electronic transport in carbon-based materials with the main focus on carbon nanotubes. Recent results predicting control of the current and noise in nanotube based Fabry–Pérot devices are highlighted. To cite this article: L.E.F. Foa Torres, G. Cuniberti, C. R. Superconducting properties of carbon nanotubes
Metallic single wall carbon nanotubes have attracted much interest as 1D quantum wires combining a low carrier density and a high mobility. It was believed for a long time that low temperature transport was exclusively dominated by the existence of unscreened Coulomb interactions leading to an insulating behavior at low temperature. However experiments have also shown evidence of superconductivity in carbon nanotubes. We distinguish two fundamentally different physical situations. When carbon nanotubes are connected to superconducting electrodes, they exhibit proximity induced superconductivity with supercurrents which strongly depend on the transmission of the electrodes. On the other hand intrinsic superconductivity was also observed in suspended ropes of carbon nanotubes and recently in doped individual tubes. These experiments indicate the presence of attractive interactions in carbon nanotubes which overcome Coulomb repulsion at low temperature, and enables investigation of superconductivity in a 1D limit never explored before. Carbon nanotubes and semiconductor nanowires have been thoroughly studied for the future replacement of silicon-based complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) devices and circuits. However, the organisation of these nanomaterials in dense transistor arrays, where each device is capable of delivering drive currents comparable with those of their silicon counterparts is still a big challenge. Here, we present a novel approach to the organisation of carbon nanotubes and semiconductor nanowires, based on the use of porous lateral alumina templates obtained by the controlled anodic oxidation of aluminium thin films. We discuss the growth of nanomaterials inside the pores of such templates and show the feasibility of our approach. Our first results point to further work on controlling the synthesis of catalyst nanoparticles at the bottom of the pores, these particles being necessary to nucleate and sustain the growth of carbon nanotubes or semiconductor nanowires. The gauge theory dual to the decay of an unstable D-particle in AdS is analysed in terms of coherent states. We discuss in detail how to count the number of particles in the decay product. We find, in agreement with the analysis in flat space, that the emission amplitude is suppressed as the mass of the radiated particles increases. To cite this article: M. Zamaklar, K. Peeters, C. R. Résumé

Pour citer cet article : M. Zamaklar, K. Peeters, C. R. The knowledge of the defect and impurity generation rates, as well as the defect spatial distribution, is the corner stone for the understanding of the evolution of material properties under irradiation. This knowledge is also an essential element for comprehensive experimental simulations of the behavior of irradiated materials. In this article the interaction of neutron and proton irradiation with metals is discussed with respect to displacement damage production. Charged particle irradiation is also briefly illustrated. After discussion of the primary interaction of projectiles (neutrons, charged particles in general, and protons in particular) with target atoms/nuclei, we describe the interaction of a recoil atom with other target atoms resulting in the slowing down of the projectile, displacement damage, impurity atom production due to nuclear reactions, and the creation of atomic displacement cascades. Then the further evolution of defect structure is discussed. The next section, devoted to subcascade formation, is divided into two parts. The first experimental evidence of subcascade formation under neutron and charged particle irradiation is presented. Then the models of subcascade formation are described. Finally we review the models for the calculation of displacement damage and show how these models can be applied to displacement damage calculation under neutron irradiation with a demonstration of a real application of the methods discussed to several nuclear facilities. Nucleation processes play a key role in the microstructure evolution of metallic alloys during thermomechanical treatments. These processes can involve phase transformations (such as precipitation) and structural instabilities (such as recrystallisation). Although the word ‘nucleation’ is used in both cases, the situation is profoundly different for precipitation and for recrystallisation on which this article is focussed. In the case of precipitation, species are conserved and the underlying physics is stochastic fluctuations, allowing the apparition of critical germs of the new phase. In the case of recrystallisation, the underlying physical phenomenon is the progressive growth of subgrain structures leading to an unstable configuration, allowing a dislocation free grain to grow at the expense of a dislocated one. The two cases require different types of modelling which are presented in the article. To cite this article: Y. Bréchet, G. Martin, C. R. Physique 7 (2006).

In this article we will first discuss the construction of brane world models being built either by intersecting D6-branes in type IIA orientifolds or, in the T-dual mirror picture, by D3- plus D7-branes with f-flux in type IIB orientifolds. We will show how their effective action is obtained by the calculation of scattering amplitudes between open and closed string states on intersecting D6-branes respectively on D3- and D7-branes. Secondly, turning on type IIB 3-form fluxes we will compute the induced soft supersymmetry breaking terms for the matter fields, like gaugino and scalar field masses. Finally, we will discuss the generation of 3-form flux in type IIB supergravity, which can be associated to the dynamical formation of a gaugino condensate in the confining phase of the dual N=1* gauge theory.

Classic adaptive optics (AO) is now a proven technique that provides a closed loop real time correction of the turbulence. It is generally based on simple and efficient control algorithms. The next AO generation (Multi-Conjugate AO (MCAO) in its various forms and Extreme AO (XAO)) will require more sophisticated control approaches, especially in the case of wide field AO. We present here the concepts behind optimal control. The advantages compared to more standard approaches are stressed. A first experimental validation is presented. To cite this article: C. FALCON is a wide-field, multi-object integral field spectrograph equipped with adaptive optics. It is dedicated to the study of the formation process of primordial galaxies. The AO system uses natural guide stars, and the high sky coverage required for these studies is obtained using tomographic techniques for the wavefront analysis. What organization of condensed matter does resist irradiation, as a function of irradiation conditions? How to characterize the latter? We survey the advances in the field during the past three decades, when irradiation effects reduce to nuclear collisions. While in simple cases (structure defined by a scalar order parameter) one may define a stochastic potential, which yields the stationary states of the compounds under irradiation and their respective stability, in more general cases, we are left with brute force atomistic simulations to explore materials' behaviour as a function of irradiation conditions. Special attention is given to the kinetics of concentration fields under irradiation, a question with several practical implications. We conclude that irradiation conditions are best defined by three parameters: the cascade features (number of displacements and replacements, length of replacement sequences, …), the frequency of cascade occurrence, and the cumulated dose. We suggest cascade features be named ‘(elementary) dose’ and the cascade occurrence frequency ‘dose rate’. To cite this article: G. Martin, P. Bellon, C. R. Physique 9 (2008).

We critically review the recent developments in the field of semi-empirical interatomic potentials for molecular dynamics simulations, with particular emphasis on the requirements and criteria associated with the simulations of radiation damage effects in metals. We address a range of issues including the suitability of potentials for large-scale simulations, the role of electronic excitations and electron energy losses, and the part played by the dynamics of internal degrees of freedom of atoms, for example magnetic excitations. The use of momentum-resolved inelastic x-ray scattering with meV energy resolution to study the high-frequency atomic dynamics in disordered systems is here reviewed. The typical realization of this experiment is described together with some common models used to interpret the measured spectra and to extract parameters of interest for the investigation of disordered systems. With the help of some selected examples, the present status of the field is discussed. Particular attention is given to those results which are still open for discussion or controversial, and which will require further development of the technique to be fully solved. Such an instrumental development seems nowadays possible at the light of recently proposed schemes for advanced inelastic x-ray scattering spectrometers. To cite this article: G. Monaco, C. R. Metamaterials have significantly extended the range of electromagnetic properties available to device designers. An interesting application of these new materials is to the problem of cloaking, where the goal is to render an object invisible to electromagnetic radiation within a certain frequency range. Here, I review the concepts behind recently-proposed invisibility cloaks, and the way in which metamaterials can allow these designs to be realized. To cite this article: B. Wood, C. R. Time-reversed waves and super-resolution
Time-reversal mirrors (TRMs) refocus an incident wavefield to the position of the original source regardless of the complexity of the propagation medium. TRMs have now been implemented in a variety of physical scenarios from GHz microwaves to MHz ultrasonics and to hundreds of Hz in ocean acoustics. Common to this broad range of scales is a remarkable robustness exemplified by observations at all scales that the more complex the medium (random or chaotic), the sharper the focus. A TRM acts as an antenna that uses complex environments to appear wider than it is, resulting for a broadband pulse, in a refocusing quality that does not depend on the TRM aperture. Moreover, when the complex environment is located in the near field of the source, time-reversal focusing opens completely new approaches to super-resolution. We will show that, for a broadband source located inside a random metamaterial, a TRM located in the far field radiated a time-reversed wave that interacts with the random medium to regenerate not only the propagating but also the evanescent waves required to refocus below the diffraction limit. This focusing process is very different from that developed with superlenses made of negative index material only valid for narrowband signals. We will emphasize the role of the frequency diversity in time-reversal focusing. To cite this article: M. Fink et al., C. R. Physique 10 (2009).
