We present a planar hypohamiltonian graph on 42 vertices and (as a corollary) a planar hypotraceable graph on 162 vertices, improving the bounds of Zamfirescu and Zamfirescu and show some other consequences. We also settle the open problem whether there exists a positive integer N, such that for every integer nN there exists a planar hypohamiltonian/hypotraceable graph on n vertices. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Thomassen showed in 1978 that every planar hypohamiltonian graph contains a cubic vertex. Equivalently, a planar graph with minimum degree at least 4 in which every vertex-deleted subgraph is hamiltonian, must be itself hamiltonian. By applying work of Brinkmann and the author, we extend this result in three directions. We prove that (i) every planar hypohamiltonian graph contains at least four cubic vertices, (ii) every planar almost hypohamiltonian graph contains a cubic vertex, which is not the exceptional vertex (solving a problem of the author raised in J. Graph Theory [79 (2015) 63–81]), and (iii) every hypohamiltonian graph with crossing number 1 contains a cubic vertex. Furthermore, we settle a recent question of Thomassen by proving that asymptotically the ratio of the minimum number of cubic vertices to the order of a planar hypohamiltonian graph vanishes.  相似文献

A graph G is hypohamiltonian/hypotraceable if it is not hamiltonian/traceable, but all vertex‐deleted subgraphs of G are hamiltonian/traceable. All known hypotraceable graphs are constructed using hypohamiltonian graphs; here we present a construction that uses so‐called almost hypohamiltonian graphs (nonhamiltonian graphs, whose vertex‐deleted subgraphs are hamiltonian with exactly one exception, see [15]). This construction is an extension of a method of Thomassen [11]. As an application, we construct a planar hypotraceable graph of order 138, improving the best‐known bound of 154 [8]. We also prove a structural type theorem showing that hypotraceable graphs possessing some connectivity properties are all built using either Thomassen's or our method. We also prove that if G is a Grinbergian graph without a triangular region, then G is not maximal nonhamiltonian and using the proof method we construct a hypohamiltonian graph of order 36 with crossing number 1, improving the best‐known bound of 46 [14].  相似文献

A graph G is hypohamiltonian if G is non‐hamiltonian and for every vertex v in G, the graph is hamiltonian. McKay asked in [J. Graph Theory 85 (2017) 7–11] whether infinitely many planar cubic hypohamiltonian graphs of girth 5 exist. We settle this question affirmatively.  相似文献

A graph is hypohamiltonian if it is not Hamiltonian, but the deletion of any single vertex gives a Hamiltonian graph. Until now, the smallest known planar hypohamiltonian graph had 42 vertices, a result due to Araya and Wiener. That result is here improved upon by 25 planar hypohamiltonian graphs of order 40, which are found through computer‐aided generation of certain families of planar graphs with girth 4 and a fixed number of 4‐faces. It is further shown that planar hypohamiltonian graphs exist for all orders greater than or equal to 42. If Hamiltonian cycles are replaced by Hamiltonian paths throughout the definition of hypohamiltonian graphs, we get the definition of hypotraceable graphs. It is shown that there is a planar hypotraceable graph of order 154 and of all orders greater than or equal to 156. We also show that the smallest planar hypohamiltonian graph of girth 5 has 45 vertices.  相似文献

We consider the following variant of the classical random graph process introduced by Erd?s and Rényi. Starting with an empty graph on n vertices, choose the next edge uniformly at random among all edges not yet considered, but only insert it if the graph remains planar. We show that for all ε > 0, with high probability, θ(n2) edges have to be tested before the number of edges in the graph reaches (1 + ε)n. At this point, the graph is connected with high probability and contains a linear number of induced copies of any fixed connected planar graph, the first property being in contrast and the second one in accordance with the uniform random planar graph model. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We prove the titular statement. This settles a problem of Chvátal from 1973 and encompasses earlier results of Thomassen, who showed it for K3, and Collier and Schmeichel, who proved it for bipartite graphs. We also show that for every outerplanar graph there exists a planar hypohamiltonian graph containing it as an induced subgraph.  相似文献

Tutte proved that every planar 4-connected graph is hamiltonian. Thomassen showed that the same conclusion holds for the superclass of planar graphs with minimum degree at least 4 in which all vertex-deleted subgraphs are hamiltonian. We here prove that if in a planar n $n$-vertex graph with minimum degree at least 4 at least n5 $n-5$ vertex-deleted subgraphs are hamiltonian, then the graph contains two hamiltonian cycles, but that for every c<1 $c\lt 1$ there exists a nonhamiltonian polyhedral n $n$-vertex graph with minimum degree at least 4 containing cn $cn$ hamiltonian vertex-deleted subgraphs. Furthermore, we study the hamiltonicity of planar triangulations and their vertex-deleted subgraphs as well as Bondy's meta-conjecture, and prove that a polyhedral graph with minimum degree at least 4 in which all vertex-deleted subgraphs are traceable, must itself be traceable.  相似文献

We prove that for any planar graph G with maximum degree Δ, it holds that the chromatic number of the square of G satisfies χ(G2) ≤ 2Δ + 25. We generalize this result to integer labelings of planar graphs involving constraints on distances one and two in the graph. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Graph Theory 42: 110–124, 2003  相似文献

A graph is called hypohamiltonian if it is not hamiltonian but becomes hamiltonian if any vertex is removed. Many hypohamiltonian planar cubic graphs have been found, starting with constructions of Thomassen in 1981. However, all the examples found until now had 4‐cycles. In this note we present the first examples of hypohamiltonian planar cubic graphs with cyclic connectivity 5, and thus girth 5. We show by computer search that the smallest members of this class are three graphs with 76 vertices.  相似文献

A classical result of Whitney states that each maximal planar graph without separating triangles is Hamiltonian, where a separating triangle is a triangle whose removal separates the graph. Chen [Any maximal planar graph with only one separating triangle is Hamiltonian J. Combin. Optim. 7 (2003) 79-86] proved that any maximal planar graph with only one separating triangle is still Hamiltonian. In this paper, it is shown that the conclusion of Whitney's Theorem still holds if there are exactly two separating triangles.  相似文献

Broadcasting is the process of information dissemination in a communication network in which a message, originated by one member, is transmitted to all members of the network. A broadcast graph is a graph which permits broadcasting from any originator in minimum time. The broadcast function B(n) is the minimum number of edges in any broadcast graph on n vertices. In this paper, we construct a broadcast graph on 26 vertices with 42 edges to prove B(26) = 42.  相似文献

The minimum leaf number ml(G) of a connected graph G is defined as the minimum number of leaves of the spanning trees of G if G is not hamiltonian and 1 if G is hamiltonian. We study nonhamiltonian graphs with the property for each or for each . These graphs will be called ‐leaf‐critical and l‐leaf‐stable, respectively. It is far from obvious whether such graphs exist; for example, the existence of 3‐leaf‐critical graphs (that turn out to be the so‐called hypotraceable graphs) was an open problem until 1975. We show that l‐leaf‐stable and l‐leaf‐critical graphs exist for every integer , moreover for n sufficiently large, planar l‐leaf‐stable and l‐leaf‐critical graphs exist on n vertices. We also characterize 2‐fragments of leaf‐critical graphs generalizing a lemma of Thomassen. As an application of some of the leaf‐critical graphs constructed, we settle an open problem of Gargano et al. concerning spanning spiders. We also explore connections with a family of graphs introduced by Grünbaum in correspondence with the problem of finding graphs without concurrent longest paths.  相似文献

For a simple planar graph G and a positive integer k, we prove the upper bound 2(n ? 1)k + 4k(n ? 4) + 2·3k ? 2((δ + 1)k ? δk)(3n ? 6 ? m) on the sum of the kth powers of the degrees of G, where n, m, and δ are the order, the size, and the minimum degree of G, respectively. The bound is tight for all m with 0?3n ? 6 ? m≤?n/2? ? 2 and δ = 3. We also present upper bounds in terms of order, minimum degree, and maximum degree of G. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Wang and Lih (2002) conjectured that every planar graph without adjacent triangles is 4-choosable. In this paper, we prove that every planar graph without any 4-cycle adjacent to two triangles is DP-4-colorable, which improves the results of Lam et al. (1999), Cheng et al. (2016) and Kim and Yu [ arXiv:1709.09809v1].  相似文献

In this paper, we prove that if any set of |E(G)|- |V(G)| + 1 facial cycles of a 3-connected planar graph G embedded in the plane doesn't form a minimum cycle base of G, then any minimum cycle base of G contains a separating cycle, and G has a minor isomorphic to T6, where T6 is the graph obtained from the complete graph K6 by deleting a path with four edges.  相似文献

We introduce a strengthening of the notion of transience for planar maps in order to relax the standard condition of bounded degree appearing in various results, in particular, the existence of Dirichlet harmonic function s proved by Benjamini and Schramm. As a corollary we obtain that every planar nonamenable graph admits nonconstant Dirichlet harmonic function s27.  相似文献

The Matching‐Cut problem is the problem to decide whether a graph has an edge cut that is also a matching. Previously this problem was studied under the name of the Decomposable Graph Recognition problem, and proved to be ‐complete when restricted to graphs with maximum degree four. In this paper it is shown that the problem remains ‐complete for planar graphs with maximum degree four, answering a question by Patrignani and Pizzonia. It is also shown that the problem is ‐complete for planar graphs with girth five. The reduction is from planar graph 3‐colorability and differs from earlier reductions. In addition, for certain graph classes polynomial time algorithms to find matching‐cuts are described. These classes include claw‐free graphs, co‐graphs, and graphs with fixed bounded tree‐width or clique‐width. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Graph Theory 62: 109–126, 2009  相似文献

Suzuki [Discrete Math. 310 (2010), 6–11] proved that for any orientable closed surface F2 other than the sphere, there exists an optimal 1‐planar graph which can be embedded on F2 as a triangulation. However, for nonorientable closed surfaces, the existence of such graphs is unknown. In this article, we prove that no optimal 1‐planar graph triangulates a nonorientable closed surface.  相似文献
