Using fixed point index theory, we study the existence of positive solutionsof the fourth order differential equation with some general boundary conditions, where g(t) is allowed to be singular at t=0 and/or 1. Our results significantly extend and improve many known results even for non-singular cases. An example is given to show how to apply our theorems.     

Equivalence of Fourth Order Boundary Value Problems and Matrix Eigenvalue Problems

We show that a class of regular self-adjoint fourth order boundary value problems (BVPs) is equivalent to a certain class of matrix problems. Conversely, for any given matrix problem in this class, there exist fourth order self-adjoint BVPs which are equivalent to the given matrix problem. In this paper, we generalize the fixed point theorem of cone expansion and compression of norm type to the theorem of functional type. As an application, the existence of positive solutions for some fourth-order beam equation boundary value problems is obtained. The emphasis is put on that the nonlinear term is dependent on all lower order derivatives.
