Let M and M′ be simple 3-manifolds, each with connected boundary of genus at least two. Suppose that Mand M′ are glued via a homeomorphism between their boundaries. Then we show that, provided the gluing homeomorphism is ‘sufficiently complicated’, the Heegaard genus of the amalgamated manifold is completely determined by the Heegaard genus of Mand M′ and the genus of their common boundary. Here, a homeomorphism is ‘sufficiently complicated’ if it is the composition of a homeomorphism from the boundary ofM to some surface S, followed by a sufficiently high power of a pseudo-Anosov onS, followed by a homeomorphism to the boundary of M′. The proof uses the hyperbolic geometry of the amalgamated manifold, generalised Heegaard splittings and minimal surfaces.  相似文献

Let S be a Heegaard splitting surface of a compact orientable 3-manifold M. If S is strongly irreducible, the manner in which it can intersect a ball or a solid torus in M is very constrained and the allowable configurations are simple and useful. Splitting surfaces not conforming to these simple local pictures must be weakly reducible.  相似文献

The infimal Heegaard gradient of a 3-manifold was defined andstudied by Marc Lackenby in an approach towards proving thewell-known virtually Haken conjecture. As instructive examples,Seifert fibered 3-manifolds are considered in this paper. In [Topology Appl. 90 (1998) 135] Scharleman showed that a strongly irreducible Heegaard splitting surface Q of a 3-manifold M can, under reasonable side conditions, intersect a ball or a solid torus in M in only a few possible ways. Suppose Mi = Vi ∪ Wi (i = 1,2) are Heegaard splittings. A homeomorphism f : F1 → F2 produces an attached manifold M = M1 ∪F1=F2 M2, where Fi ∪→ δ_Wi. In this paper we define a surface sum of Heegaard splittings induced from the Heegaard splittings of M1 and M2, and give a sufficient condition when the surface sum of Heegaard splitting is stabilized. We also give examples showing that the surface sum of Heegaard splittings can be unstabilized. This indicates that the surface sum of Heegaard splittings and the amalgamation of Heegaard splittings can give different Heegaard structures.  相似文献

We consider the problem of whether a given hyperbolic surface occurs as the totally geodesic boundary of a compact hyperbolic 3-manifold (as some or as the only boundary component). We discuss some explicit examples of hyperbolic surfaces, in particular the surface associated to the small stellated dodecahedron (one of the four Kepler-Poinsot polyhedra) which is the boundary of a hyperbolic icosahedral 3-manifold.  相似文献

A class of strongly coupled semilinear reaction-diffusion equations is discussed. The FitzHugh-Nagumo equation in [1] is only an example. The results that strongly coupled term generates an analytic semigroup extended the results in [4]. The results of the existence and uniqueness of solution and the stability of zero solution improved that in [1]. This paper also discusses the existence of periodic solution.  相似文献
