The problem of a long hollow viscoelastic cylinder, enclosed in an elastic shell and loaded by internal pressure, is considered. Two cases are investigated: 1) the shear and volume relaxation kernels are proportional; 2) the shear and volume creep kernels are proportional. Resolving integral equations with singular kernels of a nondifference type are obtained and a method of solution is proposed. Our previous theory for the viscoelasticity of spheroplastics and two-phase structural models was used to construct stress creep and relaxation operators for shear of orthogonally reinforced spherofibrous composites. The operators were constructed using the Volterra principle, Rabotnov's fraction exponential kernels, and approximate analytical relationships for the integral composite characteristics. Operators were taken incorporating data on the rheonomic characteristics of the composite, components with hybrid, hollow, and other fiber types. The creep and long-time strength in interlaminar shear and the creep in compression in the direction of the reinforcement have been experimentally investigated for certain types of oriented glass-reinforced plastics. The specimens in the interlaminar creep tests took the form of short beams loaded in bending. The experimental creep data for shear and compression are well described by the hereditary theory with a kernel of the Abel type (shear) or in the form of a Rabotnov function (compression). If the stresses are constant in time, good agreement with experiment is also given by Findley's form of the aging theory. A deformation criterion of interlaminar shear strength is also obtained. The results of a comparative experimental investigation of the short-term static and vibrational creep of a fabric-reinforced plastic in shear in the plane of the reinforcement are presented. Epoxy resin cured with methyltetrahydrophthalic and maleic anhydrides has been tested in relaxation, creep, and compression at constant strain rate. The constants characterizing the relaxation properties and the approximate limits of the spectrum of most probable relaxation times have been determined; it is shown that the mechanical properties can be described by means of equations with two relaxation times. The residual optical effect has also been investigated. Tensile, compressive, torsional, and combined creep tests have been performed on tubular specimens of a glass fabric-reinforced plastic. The temperature relaxation of polycarbonate film and the accompanying change in the birefringence path difference are considered. It is shown that at a temperature of about 170°C intense crystallization takes place in the film. The deformation modulus is a function of the density of the network and its degree of orientation. The variation of these parameters with the stretch ratio and temperature is determined experimentally. An experimental study of the stress relaxation and creep of a series of synthetic fibers has revealed a reduction in the intensity of these processes as the tensile strain increases. On the basis of a comparison of the relations obtained and the results of previous studies of loaded oriented polymers using small-angle x-ray scattering and NMR techniques it is suggested that the observed effect is attributable to orientational ordering of the through macromolecules in the amorphous regions of the fiber. Conclusions 1. The effect of hydrostatic pressure on the creep of Teflon has been investigated under isothermal conditions. The applicability of the principle of reduced variables for reduction of creep curves with respect to pressure has been shown.2. It has been ascertained that in the pressure region from atmospheric to 1600 kgf/cm2 there are two subregions, which are separated by a transition at a pressure of 700–800 kgf/cm2. It has been shown that in these subregions the occurrence of relaxation processes has different characters.3. A direct measurement of the free volume of Teflon has been made in the temperature range from 40 to 120°C.
