Vervet monkeys routinely produce semantic alarm calls upon detection of various predators encountered in their natural environment. Two of these calls, snake and eagle alarms, were analyzed using digital signal processing techniques in order to identify potentially distinctive acoustic cues. Distinctive cues were sought in the periodicity of the source waveform associated with each call type, the probable vocal tract filtering functions, and in temporal patterning. Results were equivocal with respect to source periodicity, but a variety of distinguishing features were found in both supralaryngeal filtering and timing. These data provide a basis for psychoacoustic perceptual testing with vervets as subjects.  相似文献

The role distinctive features played in the identification of 21 dichotically presented syllable initial English consonants was evaluated. Results were analyzed for the entire stimulus set and for various intra- and inter-manner class comparisons. Consistent with previous dichotic studies of stops alone, stops as a subgroup showed a large right ear advantage, a high incidence of blend errors, and greater accuracy in identification when the competing stimuli contrasted on one (rather than two) distinctive features. Results for manner classes other than stops, for inter-manner comparisons and for the total stimulus set indicated increased correct identification with increasing numbers of distinctive feature differences between the two syllables. Analysis of error patterns revealed that, in addition to the stops, continuants, and stop-continuant, stop-affricate, and stop-nasal pairs revealed significant numbers of blend errors. Error responses also showed a tendency for unmarked feature specifications to predominate significantly over marked feature specifications. Finally, the magnitude of the right ear advantage varied significantly as a function of manner class, but not as a function of number of feature contrasts.  相似文献

Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) is used to study molecular motion in two fully aromatic oriented liquid-crystal (LC) polymers (the copolymer with the brand name Vectra and poly-paraphenylphenyleneterephthalate) at high temperatures up to 610 K. Above the temperature of the thermotropic transition, a fine structure is observed in the NMR spectra analogous to structures seen previously only in studies of low-molecular-weight LC materials. Analysis of the results indicates that macromolecules in the LC state participate in cooperative types of motion. The relation between structural rearrangements and hardening during thermal processing is discussed, along with the role of distinctive features in the molecular motion in the mesophase. Fiz. Tverd. We present the results of experimental studies of some features in the behavior of small-scale artificial irregularities (SSAIs) at mid-and high latitudes based on the “Sura” and EISCAT/HEATING HF facilities. Observations were performed by the method of aspect scattering using a network of diagnostic paths having a common reception point located near St. Petersburg. We found that an extremely long duration of the second (slow) stage of SSAI relaxation of up to 5 min occurs in the evening hours when the ionosphere above the “Sura” facility is illuminated by the Sun, but the solar terminator travels through the magnetically conjugated ionosphere. The conjecture is made that the processes initiated by the terminator are mostly responsible for secondary ionospheric turbulence maintaining the irregularities above “Sura.” A drastic increase in the Doppler spectra width of the scattered signals is revealed when the magnetically conjugate point of the ionosphere is located on the shade side of the terminator, but the ionosphere above the “Sura” facility is still lighted. It is assumed that the “ run away” of photoelectrons from the day to the night side could reduce the threshold of excitation of artificial irregularities, leading to an increase in their intensity. The presence of fairly intense scattered signals was detected from the “Sura” and EISCAT/HEATING experimental results both under conditions of pulsed HF heating after continuous heater-on periods and cycled HF heating by short pulses. In the case of pulsed heating by short pulses with duration τp < 100 ms and average radiated power Pa below the threshold power Pthr of the SSAI generation cutoff the irregularities can be maintained due only to striction parametric instabilities. The excitation of irregularites under the cycled HF pumping with the pulse duration τp = 384 ms for Pa comparable with Pthr was detected. The aspect-angle dependence, or the so-called magnetic zenith effect, was found in the SSAI intensity. Budgerigars are small Australian parrots that learn new vocalizations throughout adulthood. Earlier work has shown that an external acoustic model and auditory feedback are necessary for the development of normal contact calls in this species. Here, the role of auditory feedback in the maintenance of species-typical contact calls and warble song in adult budgerigars is documented. Deafened adult birds (five male, one female) vocalized less frequently and showed both suprasegmental and segmental changes in their contact calls and warble song. Contact calls of all adult-deafened budgerigars showed abnormalities in acoustic structure within days to a few weeks following surgery. Within 6 months of surgery, nearly all contact calls produced by deafened birds were strikingly abnormal, showing highly variable patterns of frequency modulation and duration. The warble song of deafened male budgerigars also differed significantly from that of normal budgerigars on several acoustic measures. These results show that auditory feedback is necessary for the maintenance of a normal, species-typical vocal repertoire in budgerigars.  相似文献

The acoustic structure of loud calls ("wahoos") recorded from free-ranging male baboons (Papio cynocephalus ursinus) in the Moremi Game Reserve, Botswana, was examined for differences between and within contexts, using calls given in response to predators (alarm wahoos), during male contests (contest wahoos), and when a male had become separated from the group (contact wahoos). Calls were recorded from adolescent, subadult, and adult males. In addition, male alarm calls were compared with those recorded from females. Despite their superficial acoustic similarity, the analysis revealed a number of significant differences between alarm, contest, and contact wahoos. Contest wahoos are given at a much higher rate, exhibit lower frequency characteristics, have a longer "hoo" duration, and a relatively louder "hoo" portion than alarm wahoos. Contact wahoos are acoustically similar to contest wahoos, but are given at a much lower rate. Both alarm and contest wahoos also exhibit significant differences among individuals. Some of the acoustic features that vary in relation to age and sex presumably reflect differences in body size, whereas others are possibly related to male stamina and endurance. The finding that calls serving markedly different functions constitute variants of the same general call type suggests that the vocal production in nonhuman primates is evolutionarily constrained.  相似文献

This study focuses on speaking voice quality in male teachers (n = 35) and male actors (n = 36), who represent untrained and trained voice users, because we wanted to investigate normal and supranormal voices. In this study, both substantial and methodologic aspects were considered. It includes a method for perceptual voice evaluation, and a basic issue was rater reliability. A listening group of 10 listeners, 7 experienced speech-language therapists, and 3 speech-language therapist students evaluated the voices by 15 vocal characteristics using VA scales. Two sets of voice signals were investigated: text reading (2 loudness levels) and sustained vowel (3 levels). The results indicated a high interrater reliability for most perceptual characteristics. Connected speech was evaluated more reliably, especially at the normal level, but both types of voice signals were evaluated reliably, although the reliability for connected speech was somewhat higher than for vowels. Experienced listeners tended to be more consistent in their ratings than did the student raters. Some vocal characteristics achieved acceptable reliability even with a smaller panel of listeners. The perceptual characteristics grouped in 4 factors reflected perceptual dimensions.  相似文献

This paper presents a study on the perception of soundscapes in train stations. The two issues addressed by this study are (1) to show that people’s knowledge about the space typology that makes up a train station is also based on sound information, and (2) to show that this information is involved in the recognition of the type of space. This study is composed of two stages. In the first stage, two auditory experiments are performed on 66 soundscape samples recorded under natural conditions: (1) free categorization with verbalization and (2) forced-choice recognition. The statistical and lexical analysis of the first experiment reveals three main types of acoustical information: sound sources, human activities, and room effects. The results of the second experiment show that people were able to recognize the type of space (platform, hall, etc.) just by listening to its soundscape. Comparison between Experiments 1 and 2 reveals the auditory similarities of the soundscapes that were recognized as belonging to the same category. In the second step, an in situ questionnaire survey was carried out and confirms the laboratory results. Indeed, when travelers are asked to describe the soundscape of the space in which they are situated, they use the same kind of auditory similarities as those found in the experiments.  相似文献

Although the amount of inharmonic energy (noise) present in a human voice is an important determinant of vocal quality, little is known about the perceptual interaction between harmonic and inharmonic aspects of the voice source. This paper reports three experiments investigating this issue. Results indicate that perception of the harmonic slope and of noise levels are both influenced by complex interactions between the spectral shape and relative levels of harmonic and noise energy in the voice source. Just-noticeable differences (JNDs) for the noise-to-harmonics ratio (NHR) varied significantly with the NHR and harmonic spectral slope, but NHR had no effect on JNDs for NHR when harmonic slopes were steepest, and harmonic slope had no effect when NHRs were highest. Perception of changes in the harmonic source slope depended on NHR and on the harmonic source slope: JNDs increased when spectra rolled off steeply, with this effect in turn depending on NHR. Finally, all effects were modulated by the shape of the noise spectrum. It thus appears that, beyond masking, understanding perception of individual parameters requires knowledge of the acoustic context in which they function, consistent with the view that voices are integral patterns that resist decomposition.  相似文献

The loudness of auditory (A), tactile (T), and auditory-tactile (A+T) stimuli was measured at supra-threshold levels. Auditory stimuli were pure tones presented binaurally through headphones; tactile stimuli were sinusoids delivered through a single-channel vibrator to the left middle fingertip. All stimuli were presented together with a broadband auditory noise. The A and T stimuli were presented at levels that were matched in loudness to that of the 200-Hz auditory tone at 25 dB sensation level. The 200-Hz auditory tone was then matched in loudness to various combinations of auditory and tactile stimuli (A+T), and purely auditory stimuli (A+A). The results indicate that the matched intensity of the 200-Hz auditory tone is less when the A+T and A+A stimuli are close together in frequency than when they are separated by an octave or more. This suggests that A+T integration may operate in a manner similar to that found in auditory critical band studies, further supporting a strong frequency relationship between the auditory and somatosensory systems.  相似文献

Little is known about the perceptual importance of changes in the shape of the source spectrum, although many measures have been proposed and correlations with different vocal qualities (breathiness, roughness, nasality, strain...) have frequently been reported. This study investigated just-noticeable differences in the relative amplitudes of the first two harmonics (H1-H2) for speakers of Mandarin and English. Listeners heard pairs of vowels that differed only in the amplitude of the first harmonic and judged whether or not the voice tokens were identical in voice quality. Across voices and listeners, just-noticeable-differences averaged 3.18 dB. This value is small relative to the range of values across voices, indicating that H1-H2 is a perceptually valid acoustic measure of vocal quality. For both groups of listeners, differences in the amplitude of the first harmonic were easier to detect when the source spectral slope was steeply falling so that F0 dominated the spectrum. Mandarin speakers were significantly more sensitive (by about 1 dB) to differences in first harmonic amplitudes than were English speakers. Two explanations for these results are possible: Mandarin speakers may have learned to hear changes in harmonic amplitudes due to changes in voice quality that are correlated with the tones of Mandarin; or Mandarin speakers' experience with tonal contrasts may increase their sensitivity to small differences in the amplitude of F0 (which is also the first harmonic).  相似文献

Zebra finches produce a learned song that is rich in harmonic structure and highly stereotyped. More is generally known about how birds learn and produce this song than how they perceive it. Here, zebra finches were trained with operant techniques to discriminate changes in natural and synthetic song motifs. Results show that zebra finches are quite insensitive to changes to the overall envelope of the motif since they were unable to discriminate more than a doubling in inter-syllable interval durations. By contrast, they were quite sensitive to changes in individual syllables. A series of tests with synthetic song syllables, including some made of frozen noise and Schroeder harmonic complexes, showed that birds used a suite of acoustic cues in normal listening but they could also distinguish among syllables simply on the basis of the temporal fine structure in the waveform. Thus, while syllable perception is maintained by multiple redundant cues, temporal fine structure features alone are sufficient for syllable discrimination and may be more important for communication than previously thought.  相似文献

The link detector combines a model-based spectral peak tracker with an echo filter to detect echolocation calls of bats. By processing calls in the spectrogram domain, the links detector separates calls that overlap in time, including call harmonics and echoes. The links detector was validated by using an artificial recording environment, including synthetic calls, atmospheric absorption, and echoes, which provided control of signal-to-noise ratio and an absolute ground truth. Maximum hit rate (2% false positive rate) for the links detector was 87% compared to 1.5% for a spectral peak detector. The difference in performance was due to the ability of the links detector to filter out echoes. Detection range varied across species from 13 to more than 20 m due to call bandwidth and frequency range. Global features of calls detected by the links detector were compared to those of synthetic calls. The error in all estimates increased as the range increased, and estimates of minimum frequency and frequency of most energy were more accurate compared to maximum frequency. The links detector combines local and global features to automatically detect calls within the machine learning paradigm and detects overlapping calls and call harmonics in a unified framework.  相似文献

Previous experiments on the perception of initial stops differing in voice-onset time have used sounds where the boundary between aspiration and voicing is clearly marked by a variety of acoustic events. In natural speech these events do not always occur at the same moment and there is disagreement among phoneticians as to which mark the onset of voicing. The three experiments described here examine how the phoneme boundary between syllable-initial, prestress /b/ and /p/ is influenced by the way in which voicing starts. In the first experiment the first 30 ms of buzz excitation is played at four different levels relative to the steady state of the vowel and with two different frequency distributions: In the F1-only conditions buzz is confined to the first formant, whereas in the F123 conditions all three formants are excited by buzz. The results reject the hypothesis that voicing is perceived to start when periodic excitation is present in the first formant. The results of the third experiment show also that buzz excitation confined to the fundamental frequency for 30 ms before the onset of full voicing (formant excitation) has little effect on the voicing boundary. The second experiment varies aspiration noise intensity and buzz onset intensity independently. Together with the first experiment it shows that: (1) at all buzz onset levels a change in aspiration intensity moves the boundary by about the 0.43 ms/dB found by Repp [Lang. Speech 27, 173-189 (1979)]; (2) when buzz onsets at levels greater than - 15 dB relative to the final vowel level, changes in buzz onset level again move the /b/-/p/ boundary by the same amount; (3) when buzz onsets at levels less than - 15 dB relative to the vowel, decreasing the buzz onset level gives more /p/- percepts than Repp's ratio predicts. This last result, taken with the results of the first experiment, may reflect a decision based on overall intensity about when voicing has started.  相似文献

Long-term average spectra (LTAS) have identified features in the sounds of singers and have compared different vocal qualities based on energy changes that occur during different vocal tasks. In this study, we compared the perceptual ratings of vocal quality of expert pedagogues with acoustic measures performed on LTAS. Fifteen expert judges rated 24 samples with six repeats of six advanced singing students under two conditions: "optimal" (O), which represented the application of the maximal open throat technique; and "suboptimal" (SO), which represented the application of the reduced open throat technique. LTAS were performed on each singing sample, and two conventional assessments of peak energy height [singing power ratio (SPR)] and peak area [energy ratio (ER)] were calculated on each LTAS. Perceptual scores, SPR, and ER were rank ordered. We then compared perceptual rankings with rankings of acoustic measures (SPR and ER) to assess whether these acoustic measurements matched the perceptual judgments of vocal quality. Although we found the expected significant relationship between SPR and ER, there was no relationship between perceptual ratings of vocal samples or singers based on SPR or ER. These findings suggest that because LTAS measures are not consistent with perceptual ratings of vocal quality, such measurements cannot define a voice of quality. Future research with LTAS to assess vocal quality should consider alternative measures that are more sensitive to subtle differences in vocal parameters.  相似文献
