The paper deals with the Cauchy problem for a complete second-order differential equation with unbounded operator coefficientsu+A(t)u+B(t)u=f, u(0)=u0, u(0)=u 1 . On a bounded C 2-domain we consider the singular boundary-value problem 1/2u=f(u) in D, u D =, where d3, f:(0,)(0,) is a locally Hölder continuous function such that f(u) as u0 at the rate u , for some (0,1), and is a non-negative continuous function satisfying certain growth assumptions. We shall develop a method to prove inequalities in a unified manner. The idea is as follows: It is quite often possible to find a continuous functional : n , such that the left- and the right-hand side of a given inequality can be written in the form (u)(v) for suitable points,v=v(u). If one now constructs a map n n , which is functional increasing (i.e. for each x n (which is not a fixed point of ) the inequality (x)<((x)) should hold) one specially gets the chain (u)( u))( 2(u))... n (u)). We show how it is possible to prove the existence of solutions of the Mumford-Shah image segmentation functional F(u,K) = \K [u2 + (ug)2]dx + n – 1(K), u W 1,2(\K), K closed in .We use a weak formulation of the minimum problem in a special class SBV() of functions of bounded variation. Moreover, we also deal with the regularity of minimizers and the approximation of F by elliptic functionals defined on Sobolev spaces. For a bounded regular Jordan domain in R 2, we introduce and study a new class of functions K() related on its Green function G. We exploit the properties of this class to prove the existence and the uniqueness of a positive solution for the singular nonlinear elliptic equation u+(x,u)=0, in D(), with u=0 on and uC(), where is a nonnegative Borel measurable function in ×(0,) that belongs to a convex cone which contains, in particular, all functions (x,t)=q(x)t ,>0 with nonnegative functions qK(). We consider the vectorial algorithm for finding best polynomial approximationsp P n to a given functionf C[a, b], with respect to the norm · s , defined byp – f s =w 1 (p – f)+w 2 (p – f) A bound for the modulus of continuity of the best vectorial approximation operator is given, and using the floating point calculus of J. H. Wilkinson, a bound for the rounding error in the algorithm is derived. Summary Consider the following quasilinear elliptic PDE, which is equivalent to a nonlinear variational inequality: –divF(u)+(u)f. Here is a singular maximal monotone graph and the nonlinear differential operator is only assumed to be monotone; surfaces of prescribed mean curvature over obstacles may thus be viewed as relevant examples. The numerical approximation proposed in this paper consists of combining continuous piecewise linear finite elements with a preliminary regularization of . The resulting scheme is shown to be quasi-optimally accurate inL . In this paper we study the question of uniqueness for an inverse problem, arising in the (thermal) linear and/or non-linear potential theory. The overdetermined problem we shall study is represented by(div(|u| p–2u)–D t u+)u=0where supp()R n ×(0,), 1<p<, L and {t=} is bounded for >0.The problem has applications in shape-recognition in underground water/oil recovery, subject to shape-change during time intervals.
