The modification of the Au(1 1 1) Shockley-type surface state by an adsorbed monolayer of large π-conjugated molecules was investigated by high-resolution angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES). We determined binding energy, band mass, and Rashba-splitting and discuss the results in the context of rare-gas adsorption on noble metals. This comparison allows the determination of the bonding strength of the adsorbates, found to be physisorptive with derived binding energies per molecule of 2.0 eV for perylene-tetracarboxylic-dianhydride (PTCDA) and 1.5 eV for naphtalene-tetracarboxylic-dianhydride (NTCDA). We will also present a superstructure model for the NTCDA/Au(1 1 1) system, deduced from low energy electron diffraction images (LEED) in combination with substrate band-backfolding.  相似文献

High-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) has been conducted to study the Shockley state (SS) in ferromagnetic Ni(1 1 1) located at the point of the surface Brillouin zone. We have determined the Fermi wave vector and Fermi energy of the state with excitation photon energies of  = 6.9-27.5 eV. On the basis of ARPES spectral shape analyses, we have found significant electron-electron interaction in the SS.  相似文献

The electronic structure of α-Mo2C(0 0 0 1) has been investigated by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy utilizing synchrotron radiation. A sharp peak is observed at 3.3 eV in normal-emission spectra. Since the peak shows no dispersion as a function of photon energy and is sensitively attenuated by oxygen adsorption, the initial state of the peak is attributed to a surface state. Resonant photoemission study shows that the state includes substantial contribution of 4d orbitals of the Mo atoms in the second layer. The emissions with constant kinetic energies of 22 and 31 eV above the Fermi level (EF) are found in normal-emission spectra, and these emissions are interpreted as originating from the Mo N1N23V and N23VV Auger transitions, respectively.  相似文献

In this article we report our findings on the electronic structure of the Li induced Ge(1 1 1)-3 × 1 reconstruction as determined by angle-resolved ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (ARUPS) and core-level spectroscopy using synchrotron radiation. The results are compared to the theoretical honeycomb-chain-channel (HCC) model for the 3 × 1 reconstruction as calculated using density functional theory (DFT). ARUPS measurements were performed in both the and directions of the 1 × 1 surface Brillouin zone at photon energies of 17 and 21.2 eV. Three surface related states were observed in the direction. In the direction, at least two surface states were seen. The calculated band structure using the single-domain HCC model for Li/Ge(1 1 1)-3 × 1 was in good agreement with experiment, allowing for the determination of the origin of the experimentally observed surface states. In the Ge 3d core-level spectra, two surface related components were identified, both at lower binding energy with respect to the Ge 3d bulk peak. Our DFT calculations of the surface core-level shifts were found to be in fair agreement with the experimental results. Finally, in contrast to the Li/Si(1 1 1)-3 × 1 case, no double bond between Ge atoms in the top layer was found.  相似文献

In this paper, the InGa-terminated InGaAs(1 0 0) (4 × 2)/c(8 × 2) surface was studied in detail, which turned out to be the most suitable to develop an InGaAs/GaAsSb interface that is as sharp as possible. In ultra high vacuum the InGaAs surface was investigated with low-energy electron diffraction, scanning tunneling microscopy and UV photoelectron spectroscopy employing synchrotron radiation as light source. Scanning the ΓΔX direction by varying the photon energy between 8.5 eV and 50 eV, two surface states in the photoelectron spectra were observed in addition to the valence band peaks.  相似文献

The adsorption of 1,3,5,7-cyclooctatetraene (COT) on Ru(0 0 1) is studied by temperature-programmed desorption (TPD), work function measurements, as well as time- and angle-resolved two-photon photoemission (2PPE) spectroscopy. The TPD data show that COT films grow at 115 K in a metastable phase when the coverage is increased from the chemisorbed monolayer to the bulk-like molecular multilayer structure. The metastable states desorb at a temperature which is ≈9 K lower than the desorption temperature of the stable multilayer. At 165 ± 2 K, they undergo an irreversible and thermally activated transformation into the stable multilayer phase. This transition is accompanied by a pronounced increase in the total 2PPE yield by more than one order of magnitude as well as the appearance of image potential states. The image states have binding energies of −0.70 eV and −0.24 eV for the n = 1 and n = 2 states, respectively, and a lifetime of 20 ± 5 fs for both states. Their appearance is interpreted as an indication of island formation in the stable multilayer regime. 2PPE spectroscopy of the image potential states provides a sensitive probe of structural transitions in the adsorbate layers.  相似文献

Oxygen adsorption on a C-terminated α-Mo2C(0 0 0 1) surface has been investigated with Auger electron spectroscopy, low-energy electron diffraction, and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy utilizing synchrotron radiation. It is found that the oxygen atoms adsorb on the Mo atoms in the second layer forming a (1 × 1) orthorhombic periodicity. The oxygen adsorption induces a peculiar state around the Fermi level, which is observed at 0.4 eV in the normal-emission spectra. ARPES measurements show that the state is a partially occupied metallic state. The photoionization cross section of the state shows a maximum at the photon energy of 56 eV, which is assigned as originating from the resonance of the Mo 4d photoemission involving Mo 4p → 4d photoexcitation.  相似文献

We have performed semi-empirical LCAO calculations of the electronic structure of the Cu(1 1 0)-p(2 × 1)O surface. This has been done accounting for the Cu-Cu interactions by means of a recently proposed set of parameters, which give very good results for the bulk as well as for the surfaces of lowest Miller indices. Furthermore, the O-O interactions, which have been neglected in the preceding similar studies, have been taken into account. The resulting surface bands are in very good agreement with the overall set of the available experimental data. Several issues concerning the physical properties of this surface are addressed in the present paper: the changes induced on the clean surface bands by the adsorption and the reconstruction; the arrangement of the Cu and O atoms in the added rows; the position of the py antibonding band of the oxygen. In particular, we have found that the latter has an energy of −0.2 eV at the point. This result confirms an experimental indication in the same direction previously reported by Courths et al. [R. Courths, S. Hüfner, P. Kemkes, G. Wiesen, Surf. Sci. 376 (1997) 43].  相似文献

A high resolution (0.0018 cm−1) Fourier transform instrument has been used to record the spectrum of an enriched 34S (95.3%) sample of sulfur dioxide. A thorough analysis of the ν2, 2ν2 − ν2, ν1, ν1 + ν2 − ν2, ν3, ν2 + ν3 − ν2, ν1 + ν2 and ν2 + ν3 bands has been carried out leading to a large set of assigned lines. From these lines ground state combination differences were obtained and fit together with the existing microwave, millimeter, and terahertz rotational lines. An improved set of ground state rotational constants were obtained. Next, the upper state rotational levels were fit. For the (0 1 0), (1 1 0) and (0 1 1) states, a simple Watson-type Hamiltonian sufficed. However, it was necessary to include explicitly interacting terms in the Hamiltonian matrix in order to fit the rotational levels of the (0 2 0), (1 0 0) and (1 0 1) states to within their experimental accuracy. More explicitly, it was necessary to use a ΔK = 2 term to model the Fermi interaction between the (0 2 0) and (1 0 0) levels and a ΔK = 3 term to model the Coriolis interaction between the (1 0 0) and (0 0 1) levels. Precise Hamiltonian constants were derived for the (0 0 0), (0 1 0), (1 0 0), (0 0 1), (0 2 0), (1 1 0) and (0 1 1) vibrational states.  相似文献

Reflection absorption infrared spectroscopy (RAIRS) has been used to investigate the adsorption of CO on CeO2−x-supported Pd nanoparticles at room temperature. The results show that when CeO2−x is initially grown on Pt(1 1 1), a small proportion of the surface remains as bare Pt sites. However, when Pd is deposited onto CeO2−x/Pt(1 1 1), most of the Pd grows directly on top of the CeO2−x(1 1 1). RAIR spectra of CO adsorption on 1 ML Pd/CeO2−x/Pt(1 1 1) show a broad CO-Pd band, which is inconsistent with a single crystal Pd surface. However, the 5 ML and 10 ML Pd/CeO2−x/Pt(1 1 1) spectra show vibrational bands consistent with the presence of Pd(1 1 1) and (1 0 0) faces, suggesting the growth of Pd nanostructures with well defined facets.  相似文献

We report the formation of Si(1 1 3)-3 × 2 facets upon exposing oxygens on the Si(5 5 12) surface at an elevated temperature. These facets are found to form only for a limited range of oxygen exposure and exhibit a well-defined 3 × 2 LEED pattern. We also find the surface electronic state unique only to the facets in the valence band. The spectral feature of these electronic states and the behavior of a (1/3 1/2) LEED spot upon oxygen contents in the facets indicate that the formation is a heterogeneous mixture of the clean Si(1 1 3) facets free of oxygens and other facets containing oxygen atoms.  相似文献

A first principles study is performed to investigate the adsorption characteristics of hydrogen on magnesium surface. Substitutional and on-surface adsorption energies are calculated for Mg (0 0 0 1) surface alloyed with the selected elements. To further analyze the hydrogen-magnesium interaction, first principles molecular dynamics method is used which simulates the behavior of H2 at the surface. Also, charge density differences of substitutionally doped surface configurations were illustrated. Accordingly, Mo and Ni are among the elements yielding lower adsorption energies, which are found to be −9.2626 and −5.2995 eV for substitutionally alloyed surfaces, respectively. In light of the dynamic calculations, Co as an alloying element is found to have a splitting effect on H2 in 50 fs, where the first hydrogen atom is taken inside the Mg substrate right after the decomposition and the other after 1300 fs. An interesting remark is that, elements which acquire higher chances of adsorption are also seen to be competent at dissociating the hydrogen molecule. Furthermore, charge density distributions support the results of molecular dynamics simulations, by verifying the distinguished effects of most of the 3d and 4d transition metals.  相似文献

We used spectroscopic photoemission and low-energy electron microscopy to measure two-dimensional (2D) emission patterns of secondary electrons (SEs) emitted from graphene layers formed on SiC(0 0 0 1). The 2D SE patterns measured at the SE energies of 0-50 eV show energy-dependent intensity distributions in the 6-fold symmetry. The SE patterns exhibit features ascribed to energy band structures of 2D free electrons, which would prove that electrons are partially confined in thin graphene layers even above the vacuum level.  相似文献

We present a reflectance difference spectroscopy (RDS) study of para-sexiphenyl (p-6P) thin film growth on Cu(1 1 0) and Cu(1 1 0)-(2 × 1)O substrates. The RDS spectra show pronounced anisotropies for p-6P films formed on both substrates at room temperature, demonstrating that the molecules are uniaxially aligned within the films. Based on the RD spectra and the evolution of the optical transitions with p-6P coverage the growth mode on both substrates could be identified. From the dominating RDS feature, assigned to the lowest energy HOMO-LUMO transition, the orientation of the molecular chain can be determined. On Cu(1 1 0), the p-6P molecular chains align in the direction, i.e., along the Cu atomic rows, whereas on the Cu(1 1 0)-(2 × 1)O surface, the molecules are oriented in the orthogonal [0 0 1] direction, i.e., along the “added” Cu-O rows of the Cu(1 1 0)-(2 × 1)O surface. The energetic position and line shape of the main RDS feature differs for the two substrates and varies with p-6P coverage. This fine structure is discussed in terms of different molecular conformations, adlayer structure and vibronic replicas.  相似文献

In the present work HCl-isopropanol treated and vacuum annealed InP(0 0 1) surfaces were studied by means of low-energy electron diffraction (LEED), soft X-ray photoemission (SXPS), and reflectance anisotropy (RAS) spectroscopies. The treatment removes the natural oxide and leaves on the surface a physisorbed overlayer containing InClx and phosphorus. Annealing at 230 °C induces desorption of InClx overlayer and reveals a P-rich (2 × 1) surface. Subsequent annealing at higher temperature induces In-rich (2 × 4) surface. The structural properties of chemically prepared InP(0 0 1) surfaces were found to be similar to those obtained by decapping of As/P-capped epitaxial layers.  相似文献

We have investigated the Ce 4f electronic states in the Ce/Pd(1 1 1) and Ce-oxide/Pd(1 1 1) systems, using resonant photoemission (Ce 4d → 4f transitions), and XPS to understand Pd-Ce interactions in ultra thin layers of cerium and ceria deposited on Pd(1 1 1). Cerium deposited on Pd(1 1 1) at room temperature forms surface Ce-Pd alloys with Ce rich character, while a Pd rich Ce-Pd alloy is formed by heating to 700 °C. A modification of the chemical state of Ce can also be seen after oxygen exposure. RPES provides evidence that Ce-oxide layers deposited on Pd(1 1 1) have a CeO2 (Ce4+) character, however a net contribution of the Ce3+ states is also revealed. The Ce3+ states have surface character and are accompanied by oxygen vacancies. Heating to 600 °C causes Ce-oxide reduction. A significant shift of Pd 4d-derived states, induced by Pd 4d and Ce 4f hybridization, was observed. The resonant features in the valence band corresponding to Ce4+, Ce3+ and Ce0 states have been investigated for various Pd−Ce(CeOx) coverages.  相似文献

Using synchrotron radiation, W 4f7/2 and valence-band (VB) photoelectron spectroscopy was used to study the oxidation states of the p(3 × 1) reconstructed surface of W(1 0 0) produced by oxygen adsorption at 1500 K. The W 4f7/2 study showed two features at 0.40 and 1.50 eV higher binding energies relative to the bulk feature which represent shifts to lower binding energies compared to the W 4f7/2 features of the as-grown oxygen films on W(1 0 0). Co-existence of these features is a characteristic of the formation of the p(3 × 1) structure. The VB studies of this system and as-grown oxygen films at room temperature (RT) showed an oxygen-induced feature for the p(3 × 1) structure for which the peak maximum had shifted by 0.9 eV to higher binding energies compared to the as-grown films. The direction of shifts in the W 4f7/2 and VB spectra for the p(3 × 1) structure confirmed the reduction of the charge transfer from W to oxygen compared to the as-grown films. A study of the VB changes with photon energy shows that the main component of the oxygen-induced feature in the p(3 × 1) VB at 6.6 ± 0.2 eV is related to a hybridized state between W 5d and O 2p electrons.  相似文献

We report a photoelectron spectroscopic study of the valence bands of epitaxial Ce(1 1 1) films grown on W(1 1 0) at room temperature. The evolution of γ → α → γ like phase transition of Ce is observed with increasing Ce coverage and the valence-band structures of γ-like Ce film are determined. The 4f and 5d photoemission cross sections in the photon energy region from 20 eV to 130 eV are presented and discussed. A 5d-like surface state and a 6s band bottom are identified.  相似文献

The adsorption properties of CO on the epitaxial five-monolayer Co/Cu(1 0 0) system, where the Co overlayer has stabilized in the metastable fcc-phase, are reported. This system is known to exhibit metallic quantum well (MQW) states at energies 1 eV or greater above the Fermi level, which may influence CO adsorption. The CO/fcc-Co/Cu(1 0 0) system was explored with low energy electron diffraction (LEED), inverse photoemission (IPE), reflection-absorption infrared spectroscopy (RAIRS) and temperature programmed desorption (TPD). Upon CO adsorption, a new feature is observed in IPE at 4.4 eV above EF and is interpreted as the CO 2π level. When adsorbed at room temperature, TPD exhibits a CO desorption peak at ∼355 K, while low temperature adsorption reveals additional binding configurations with TPD features at ∼220 K and ∼265 K. These TPD peak temperatures are correlated with different C-O stretch vibrational frequencies observed in the IR spectra. The adsorption properties of this surface are compared to those of the surfaces of single crystal hcp-Co, as well as other metastable thin film systems.  相似文献
