Heteroaggregation (or heterocoagulation) rate constants have been measured in mixtures of well-characterized colloidal particles of opposite charge with multiangle static and dynamic light scattering. This technique permits routine measurements of absolute heteroaggregation rate constants, also in the presence of homoaggregation. Particularly with multiangle dynamic light scattering, one is able to estimate absolute heteroaggregation rate constants accurately in the fast aggregation regime for the first time. Heteroaggregation rate constants have also been measured over a wide range of parameters, for example, ionic strength and different surface charge densities. Amidine latex particles, sulfate latex particles, and silica particles have been used for these experiments, and they were well characterized with respect to their charging and homoaggregation behavior. It was shown that heteroaggregation rate constants of oppositely charged particles increase slowly with decreasing ionic strength, and provided the surface charge is sufficiently large, the rate constant is largely independent of the surface charge. These trends can be well described with DLVO theory without adjustable parameters.  相似文献

Coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering microscopy is performed on glassy systems of poly(methylmethacrylate) colloidal particles in density- and refractive-index-matched solvents. Samples are prepared with varying amounts of linear polystyrene, which induces a depletion driven attraction between the nearly hard-sphere particles. Images collected over several hours confirm the existence of a reentrant glass transition. The images also reveal that the dynamics of repulsive and attractive glasses are qualitatively different. Colloidal particles in repulsive glasses exhibit cage rattling and escape, while those in attractive glasses are nearly static while caged but exhibit large displacements upon (infrequent) cage escape.  相似文献

The effects of polyacrylamides (PAM) at different ionic strengths on the gravity-induced heteroflocculation behavior of binary suspensions are investigated based on the turbidity measurement method in the present paper. For the binary suspensions composed of two different-sized latexes, it is found that the stability ratios of the suspensions decrease with the increase of either the PAM or the electrolyte concentration, and with the increase of the size differences between two latex components of the binary suspension. From the pictures of scanning electron microscopy, it is also interesting to find that, even when both latexes are negatively charged, the small latexes can still be adsorbed at the interparticle regions between two large latexes through the bridge formed by PAM between the small and the large latexes.  相似文献

We explore the formation of "floating" two-dimensional colloidal crystals above weakly attractive surfaces that are either positively or negatively charged. In particular, we studied crystal formation above positively charged poly-L-lysine-poly(ethylene glycol) surfaces with and without short single-stranded DNA and above negatively charged bovine albumin serum-streptavidin multilayers. Confocal microscopy revealed the evolution of crystals several micrometers above all three surfaces. Interestingly, the "flying height" of crystals was found to depend on the surface coating. All crystalline structures remained remarkably stable over weeks, even under high salt conditions. Neither lifting the crystals nor lowering them by means of buoyancy forces destroyed them.  相似文献

An HPLC technique for the size determination of colloidal cadmium sulphide and zinc sulphide in a diameter range from 20 down to 2 nm using silica with pore sizes from 30 to 100 nm is described. The growth of the particles during the run was suppressed by the addition of stabilizers to the eluent and by the use of reversed-phase silica as the stationary phase for inorganic stabilizers. The calibration of the column sets by electron microscopy resulted in a linear relationship between the logarithm of the particle diameter and the elution time. The analysis was carried out within 4–10 min. The lateral resolution lay between 1.3% for larger particles and 1.9% for smaller particles. Below a diameter of 13 nm these values were better than those found from electron microscopy. From the comparison of the calibration lines for various colloidal materials, the differences in their electrical double layers could be estimated. The limitations of the method are discussed and the size-exclusion chromatographic and electron microscopic methods are compared.  相似文献

We examine the spatial distribution of fluorescent-labeled charged polystyrene (PS) particles (particle volume fraction ? = 0.0001 and 0.001, diameter d = 183 and 333 nm) added to colloidal crystals of charged silica particles (? = ?(s) = 0.035-0.05, d = 118 nm). At ?(s) = 0.05, the PS particles were almost randomly distributed in the volume-filling polycrystal structures before the grain growth process. Time-resolved confocal laser scanning microscopy observations reveal that the PS particles are swept to the grain boundaries of the colloidal silica crystals owing to grain boundary migration. PS particles with d = 2420 nm are not excluded from the silica crystals. We also examine influences of the impurities on the grain growth laws, such as the power law growth, size distribution, and existence of a time-independent distribution function of the scaled grain size.  相似文献

The effects of multivalent electrolytes on gravity-induced heteroflocculation behavior of binary suspensions under different gravity forces are investigated based on the turbidity measurement method. The heteroflocculation behavior of the binary suspensions described by the stability ratio is well analyzed by using the stability diagram and the DLVO theory. It is found that the stability ratios of the binary suspensions decrease with the increase of either the electrolyte concentration and valence or the gravity forces and with the decrease of the size ratio of the latexes components of the binary suspension. Because the theoretical stability ratios obtained by the trajectory analysis method are always higher than the corresponding heteroflocculation experimental values obtained by turbidity measurements, we successfully apply the “regressed” surface potentials determined from the flocculation experiments of monodispersed suspension to predict the stability ratios of the corresponded binary suspension.  相似文献

Binary colloidal crystals (BCCs) were prepared from two kinds of poly(styrene-methyl methacrylate-acrylic acid) colloids approximately 190 and approximately 380 nm in diameter by the codeposition method. A variety of array patterns of BCCs were observed and characterized by AFM and SEM. The significance of these colloidal arrays in crystallography has been discussed preliminarily.  相似文献

Advances over the past decade in nonlinear electrophoresis of charged, dielectric colloidal particles in aqueous electrolytes are reviewed. Here, the word nonlinear refers to the fact that the ratio of the electrophoretic speed of the particle to the magnitude of the applied electric field—the electrophoretic mobility—is not independent of field strength. This is in stark contrast to the vast majority of work on (linear) colloidal electrophoresis over the last century, where the mobility is assumed to be a material property dependent only on the particle–electrolyte combination. The present discussion is focused on: (i) experimental measurements of the field-dependent mobility; (ii) an asymptotic scheme to calculate the mobility in the common thin-Debye-layer limit; and (iii) computations of nonlinear electrophoresis from numerical solution of the electrokinetic equations. The article concludes with suggestions for future work in this evolving area of colloid science.  相似文献

The procedures and the backgrounds for the formation of monodispersed colloidal particles are reviewed, along with the personal view of the author's own, by classifying a wide variety of the systems. This article consists of the size distribution control for uniform colloidal systems with typical examples, including homogeneous and heterogeneous systems, and the crystal habit control of monodispersed particles.  相似文献

We report a numerical investigation of the viscoelastic behavior in models for steric repulsive and short-ranged attractive colloidal suspensions, along different paths in the attraction strength vs packing fraction plane. More specifically, we study the behavior of the viscosity (and its frequency dependence) on approaching the repulsive glass, the attractive glass, and in the reentrant region where viscosity shows a nonmonotonic behavior on increasing attraction strength. On approaching the glass lines, the increase of the viscosity is consistent with a power-law divergence with the same exponent and critical packing fraction previously obtained for the divergence of the density fluctuations. Based on mode-coupling calculations, we associate the increase of the viscosity with specific contributions from different length scales. We also show that the results are independent of the microscopic dynamics by comparing Newtonian and Brownian simulations for the same model. Finally, we evaluate the Stokes-Einstein relation approaching both glass transitions, finding a clear breakdown which is particularly strong for the case of the attractive glass.  相似文献

We review recent developments in the synthesis and self-assembly of Janus and multiblock colloidal particles, highlighting new opportunities for colloid science and technology that are enabled by encoding orientational order between particles as they self-assemble. Emphasizing the concepts of molecular colloids and colloid valence unique to such colloids, we describe their rational self-assembly into colloidal clusters, taking monodisperse tetrahedra as an example. We also introduce a simple method to lock clusters into permanent shapes. Extending this to 2D lattices, we also review recent progress in assembling new open colloidal networks including the kagome lattice. In each application, areas of opportunity are emphasized.  相似文献

Using Derjaguin's approximation, we have evaluated the interaction energy associated with van der Waals, electrostatic, depletion, and capillary forces between colloidal spheroids. If the interaction range between spheroids is distinctly smaller than the lengths of their principal axes, then simple pair potentials that depend on particle distance and orientation can be derived. Attractive interactions between adjacent spheroids favor their parallel alignment. Parallel spheroids can be arranged into a variety of densely packed configurations. All of these configurations turn out to have the same lattice energy. We discuss the implications of this degeneracy with respect to the stability of photonic crystals consisting of spheroids.  相似文献

We study the effective screened electrostatic potential created by a spheroidal colloidal particle immersed in an electrolyte, within the mean field approximation, using Poisson-Boltzmann equation in its linear and nonlinear forms, and also beyond the mean field by means of Monte Carlo computer simulation. The anisotropic shape of the particle has a strong effect on the screened potential, even at large distances (compared to the Debye length) from it. To quantify this anisotropy effect, we focus our study on the dependence of the potential on the position of the observation point with respect with the orientation of the spheroidal particle. For several different boundary conditions (constant potential, or constant surface charge) we find that, at large distance, the potential is higher in the direction of the large axis of the spheroidal particle.  相似文献

We introduce the notion of "Janus balance" (J), defined as the dimensionless ratio of work to transfer an amphiphilic colloidal particle (a "Janus particle") from the oil-water interface into the oil phase, normalized by the work needed to move it into the water phase. The J value can be calculated simply from the interfacial contact angle and the geometry of Janus particles, without the need to know the interfacial energy. It is demonstrated that Janus particles of the same chemical composition but different geometries will have the highest adsorption energy when J = 1. Even for particles of homogeneous chemical makeup, the Janus balance concept can be applied when considering the contact angle hysteresis in desorbing the particle from equilibrium into the water or oil phase. The Janus balance concept may enable predictions of how a Janus particle behaves with respect to efficiency and function as a solid surfactant, as the Janus balance of solid surfactants is the analog of the classical hydrophile-lipophile balance of small surfactant molecules.  相似文献

This paper investigates effects of using monodisperse inverse analyses to extract particle-particle and particle-surface potentials from simulated interfacial colloidal fluids of polydisperse attractive particles. Effects of polydispersity are investigated as functions of particle concentration and attractive well depth and range for van der Waals and depletion potentials. Forward Monte Carlo simulations are used to generate particle distribution functions for polydisperse interfacial colloidal fluids from which inverted potentials are obtained using an inverse Ornstein-Zernike analysis and an inverse Monte Carlo simulation method. Attractive potentials are successfully recovered for monodisperse colloidal fluids, but polydispersity that is unaccounted for in inverse analyses produces (1) apparent softening of strong forces, (2) anomalous repulsive and attractive interactions, and (3) aphysical particle overlaps. This investigation provides insights into the role of polydispersity in altering the equilibrium structure and corresponding inverted potentials of attractive colloidal fluids near surfaces. These findings should assist the design and interpretation of optical microscopy experiments involving interfacial colloidal fluids similar to the simulated experiments reported here.  相似文献

Surface modification of colloidal silica particles   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Colloidal silica particles in organic solvents were grafted, using several reagents, in order to make them hydrophobic. The hydrophobicity of the beads could be easily varied. Quasielastic light scattering and transmission electron microscopy experiments showed that no aggregation occurs during the reaction when monofunctional agents are used. Elemental analysis and solid-state NMR measurements gave us the rate of surface modification of the silanol groups. We also studied the rheological behaviour of the grafted particles as a function of the volume fraction in solvents of various hydrophobicity. Hexamethyldisilazane-grafted particles display hard-sphere behaviour in polar solvents such as 2-propanol, but not in alkanes, whereas dimethyldodecylchlorosilane-grafted particles flocculated in polar solvents but could easily be dispersed in apolar solvents. We consider binary mixtures of soft repulsive spherical particles and calculate the depletion interaction between two big spheres mediated by the fluid of small spheres, using different theoretical and simulation methods. The validity of the theoretical approach, a virial expansion in terms of the density of the small spheres, is checked against simulation results. Attention is given to the approach toward the hard-sphere limit and to the effect of density and temperature on the strength of the depletion potential. Our results indicate, surprisingly, that even a modest degree of softness in the pair potential governing the direct interactions between the particles may lead to a significantly more attractive total effective potential for the big spheres than in the hard-sphere case. This might lead to significant differences in phase behavior, structure, and dynamics of a binary mixture of soft repulsive spheres. In particular, a perturbative scheme is applied to predict the phase diagram of an effective system of big spheres interacting via depletion forces for a size ratio of small and big spheres of 0.2; this diagram includes the usual fluid-solid transition but, in the soft-sphere case, the metastable fluid-fluid transition, which is probably absent in hard-sphere mixtures, is close to being stable with respect to direct fluid-solid coexistence. From these results, the interesting possibility arises that, for sufficiently soft repulsive particles, this phase transition could become stable. Possible implications for the phase behavior of real colloidal dispersions are discussed.  相似文献
