We discuss dynamics of a slow quantum phase transition in a spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensate. We analytically determine the scaling properties of the system magnetization and verify them with numerical simulations in a one dimensional model.  相似文献

The Quantum Ising model is an exactly solvable model of quantum phase transition. This Letter gives an exact solution when the system is driven through the critical point at a finite rate. The evolution goes through a series of Landau-Zener level anticrossings when pairs of quasiparticles with opposite pseudomomenta get excited with a probability depending on the transition rate. The average density of defects excited in this way scales like a square root of the transition rate. This scaling is the same as the scaling obtained when the standard Kibble-Zurek mechanism of thermodynamic second order phase transitions is applied to the quantum phase transition in the Ising model.  相似文献

We review recent theoretical work on two closely related issues: excitation of an isolated quantum condensed matter system driven adiabatically across a continuous quantum phase transition or a gapless phase, and apparent relaxation of an excited system after a sudden quench of a parameter in its Hamiltonian. Accordingly, the review is divided into two parts. The first part revolves around a quantum version of the Kibble–Zurek mechanism including also phenomena that go beyond this simple paradigm. What they have in common is that excitation of a gapless many-body system scales with a power of the driving rate. The second part attempts a systematic presentation of recent results and conjectures on apparent relaxation of a pure state of an isolated quantum many-body system after its excitation by a sudden quench. This research is motivated in part by recent experimental developments in the physics of ultracold atoms with potential applications in the adiabatic quantum state preparation and quantum computation.  相似文献

The geometric phase associated with a many body ground state exhibits a signature of quantum phase transition. In this context, we have studied the behavior of the geometric phase during a linear quench caused by a gradual turning off of the magnetic field interacting with a spin chain.  相似文献

We study the dynamics of the Mott insulator-superfluid quantum phase transition in a periodic 1D array of Josephson junctions. We show that crossing the critical point at a finite rate with a quench time tau(Q) induces finite quantum fluctuations of the current around the loop proportional to tau(-1/6)(Q). This scaling could be experimentally verified with an array of weakly coupled Bose-Einstein condensates or superconducting grains.  相似文献

It is shown that, in the absence of disorder, a quantum Hall liquid undergoes a second-order quantum phase transition as function of the applied magnetic field. The analysis is carried out in the framework of the Chem-Simons-Ginzburg-Landau theory which is shown to exhibit a nontrivial infrared stable fixed point. The corresponding critical exponents are found to be gaussian, and thus universal and independent of the filling fraction.  相似文献

It is shown that the quantum phase transition in metallic non-s-wave ferromagnets, or spin nematics, is generically of first order. This is due to a coupling of the order parameter to soft electronic modes that play a role analogous to that of the electromagnetic vector potential in a superconductor, which leads to a fluctuation-induced first-order transition. A generalized mean-field theory for the p-wave case is constructed that explicitly shows this effect. Tricritical wings are predicted to appear in the phase diagram in a spatially varying magnetic field, but not in a homogeneous one.  相似文献

We report an inelastic neutron-scattering study at the field-induced magnetic quantum phase transition of CeCu5.8Au0.2. The data can be described better by the spin-density-wave scenario than by a local quantum critical point, while the latter scenario was shown to be applicable to the zero-field concentration-tuned quantum phase transition in CeCu6-xAux for x=0.1. This constitutes direct microscopic evidence for a difference in the quantum fluctuation spectra at a magnetic quantum critical point driven by different tuning parameters.  相似文献

This paper studies the discord of a bipartite two-level system coupling to an XY spin-chain environment in a transverse field and investigates the relationship between the discord property and the environment’s quantum phase transition. The results show that the quantum discord is also able to characterize the quantum phase transitions. We also discuss the difference between discord and entanglement, and show that quantum discord may reveal more general information than quantum entanglement for characterizing the environment’s quantum phase transition.  相似文献

We analyze the problem of a quantum computer in a correlated environment protected from decoherence by quantum error correction using a perturbative renormalization group approach. The scaling equation obtained reflects the competition between the dimension of the computer and the scaling dimension of the correlations. For an irrelevant flow, the error probability is reduced to a stochastic form for a long time and/or a large number of qubits; thus, the traditional derivation of the threshold theorem holds for these error models. In this way, the "threshold theorem" of quantum computing is rephrased as a dimensional criterion.  相似文献

We study a continuous quantum phase transition that breaks a Z2 symmetry. We show that the transition is described by a new critical point which does not belong to the Ising universality class, despite the presence of well-defined symmetry-breaking order parameter. The new critical point arises since the transition not only breaks the Z2 symmetry, it also changes the topological or quantum order in the two phases across the transition. We show that the new critical point can be identified in experiments by measuring critical exponents. So measuring critical exponents and identifying new critical points is a way to detect new topological phases and a way to measure topological or quantum orders in those phases.  相似文献

In this paper we provide a novel way to explore the relation between quantum teleportation and quantum phase transition. We construct a quantum channel with a mixed state which is made from one dimensional quantum Ising chain with infinite length, and then consider the teleportation with the use of entangled Werner states as input qubits. The fidelity as a figure of merit to measure how well the quantum state is transferred is studied numerically. Remarkably we find the first-order derivative of the fidelity with respect to the parameter in quantum Ising chain exhibits a logarithmic divergence at the quantum critical point. The implications of this phenomenon and possible applications are also briefly discussed.  相似文献

We study the magnetic quantum phase transition in an anisotropic Kondo lattice model. The dynamical competition between the RKKY and Kondo interactions is treated using an extended dynamic mean field theory appropriate for both the antiferromagnetic and paramagnetic phases. A quantum Monte Carlo approach is used, which is able to reach very low temperatures, of the order of 1% of the bare Kondo scale. We find that the finite-temperature magnetic transition, which occurs for sufficiently large RKKY interactions, is first order. The extrapolated zero-temperature magnetic transition, on the other hand, is continuous and locally critical.  相似文献

We study the dissipative quantum phase transition(QPT)in a biased Tavis–Cummings model consisting of an ensemble of two-level systems(TLSs)interacting with a cavity mode, where the TLSs are pumped by a drive field. In our proposal,we use a dissipative TLS ensemble and an active cavity with effective gain.In the weak drive-field limit, the QPT can occur under the combined actions of the loss and gain of the system.Owing to the active cavity, the QPT behavior can be much differentiated even for a finite strength of the drive field on the TLS ensemble. Also,we propose to implement our scheme based on the dissipative nitrogen-vacancy(NV)centers coupled to an active optical cavity made from the gainmedium-doped silica.Furthermore,we show that the QPT can be measured by probing the transmission spectrum of the cavity embedding the ensemble of the NV centers.  相似文献

The dynamics of 90-degree interphase domain walls during a first-order Morin-type spin-reorientation phase transition is studied theoretically. It is shown that an oscillatory motion of the walls with an amplitude that depends linearly on the field amplitude, as well as a drift motion of the wall at a velocity proportional to the square of the field amplitude, are driven by an external oscillating magnetic field. Drift of the entire domain structure as a whole is predicted to be possible. Fiz. Tverd. Tela (St. Petersburg) 41, 274–282 (February 1999)  相似文献

The problem of nonlinear transport near a quantum phase transition is solved within the Landau theory for the dissipative insulator-superconductor phase transition in two dimensions. Using the nonequilibrium Schwinger round-trip Green function formalism, we obtain the scaling function for the nonlinear conductivity in the quantum-disordered regime. We find that the conductivity scales as E2 at low fields but crosses over at large fields to a universal constant on the order of e(2)/h. The crossover between these two regimes obtains when the length scale for the quantum fluctuations becomes comparable to that of the electric field within logarithmic accuracy.  相似文献
