The dynamics of the electrooptical 90° twist effect in a dual-frequency nematic liquid crystal is investigated for wavelengths
of 0.65 and 1.55μ m. It is shown that the boundary conditions of the interaction between the phases affect the optical threshold
of the twist effect, the contrast, and the working voltage range. The switching time of the twist effect from the off to the
on state upon a variation of the amplitude of a rectangular dc voltage pulse from 15 to 50 V changes from 1.5 to 0.3 ms for
a thickness of the nematic crystal layer of about 7 μ m. The minimal time of switching from the “on” to the “off” state was
3 ms in the case when relaxation of molecules in a cell with asymmetric boundary conditions was controlled electrically. The
dynamic range of transmittance variation at a wavelength of 1.55 μm extended to 30 dB. 相似文献

Using a light-beating technique we have measured the damping time of thermal fluctuations of the nematic director for the
so called cylindrical or calamitic nematic (NC) phase of the lyotropic system K-laurate/decanol/. By varying the scattering angle in suitable geometries, we have been able to estimate the orientational diffusivities associated
to the three pure deformations of splay, twist and bend. A former measurement made in the disk-like ND phase of the same system yielded a large deviation between the splay and twist diffusivities. The effect was then attributed
to induced flows, or backflow, which could be responsible for the reduction of the splay viscosity. In fact, this is the analogous
effect, for disks, to the one recognized since long time ago arriving for rod-like molecules in a classical nematic, though
in this case it is associated with bend deformations. The analogy comes about thanks to the interchange of the role played
by disks and cylinders for, respectively, splay and bend fluctuations.The measurements reported here provide a new test on
the applicability of the backflow model to a nematic system composed of micelles, that is, aggregates made of amphiphilic
(surfactant) molecules, in its cylindrical-like variant, i.e. the NC phase. In addition, the comparative study made here with the previous results existing in the literature for the ND phase, allows us to conjecture on structural issues concerning lyotropic nematics.

The emergence of electroconvection in a nematic liquid crystal under the action of a nonharmonic electric field is investigated.
Analysis is carried out using a 2D model. We propose new forms of the varying electric field acting on the system, for which
subharmonic oscillations exist: (a) electric field of a trapezoidal form and (b) external field varying in accordance with
the law of “joined cosines.” The behavior of synchronous excitations in the insulating and conducting regimes, as well as
subharmonic oscillations, is analyzed. The parametric instability domains are found, and the critical frequencies of transition
between different response regimes are determined. The stability maps of the nematic liquid crystal are constructed on the

The effect of nanoobjects, molecular objects, and α particles introduced into a liquid-crystal matrix that is placed in a dc electric field is studied theoretically and experimentally. The introduced particles form a charged defect, the radius of which is much larger than the particle sizes, in the orientational structure of the liquid crystal. This defect is easily observed under an optical microscope, and its image agrees with calculated data. It is suggested that this effect be used for detection and diagnostics of small objects and for design of ionizing radiation detectors. The phenomena revealed in this work can help in producing new charged-defect-saturated liquid-crystal structures formed by introducing nanoparticles in a medium or by irradiating a medium by ionizing radiation. A nonmechanical principle of transport of nanoparticles and their regular incorporation into the lattice is implemented. The essence of this principle is control of molecular orientations in a liquid crystal by quasi-stationary electric fields. 相似文献

We directly visualize the response and relaxation dynamics of bipolar nematic liquid crystal droplets to an applied electric field E. Despite strong planar anchoring, there is no critical field for switching. Instead, upon application of E, the surface region first reorients, followed by movement of the disclinations and the bipolar axis. After removing E, elastic forces restore the drop to its original state. The collective electro-optic properties of ordered hexagonal-close-packed monolayers of drops are probed by diffraction experiments confirming the proposed switching mechanism. 相似文献

By means of specific heat spectroscopy, we have studied the dynamics of nematic 8CB nucleated, in the presence of random disorder, as the temperature is lowered across the isotropic to nematic phase transition such that the crossover region of random dilution to random field regimes of disorder strength is explored. We show, in terms of frequency dependence, hysteretic behavior, and aging effects, that the out-of-equilibrium properties of the nematic nucleated in the random disorder regime are strongly reminiscent of the bulk material while the one grown in the random field regime shows a glassy behavior with aging leading to slower dynamics. The aging effect has been explained in terms of strain relaxation in analogy with observations in other soft glassy colloidal systems. 相似文献

We report some preliminary results on the realization of terahertz (THz) nematic liquid crystal (LC) lens with electric tunable focal length. A LC cell with a single circular-hole electrode is driven by an AC voltage to yield the desired spatial distribution of the refractive index. The two-dimensional function of the phase delay introduced into THz wave depends on the AC voltage and the electrodes contacting the LC layer. This lens is operated at room temperature and its convergent optical characteristic is demonstrated at 118 μm. We realize the lens with a clear aperture of 1 mm. The lens matched with a bolometer array is capable of obtaining real-time THz images of a sample without any mechanical scanning. 相似文献

The spectral characteristic of a nematic liquid crystal photonic crystal fiber is analyzed. The locations of the transmission minima in the transmission spectrum can be evaluated by examining the modal cutoffs of specific modes in the liquid crystal inclusion. The selection criteria for these specific modes are based on the fraction of power residing in the core. Explicit expressions for these modal cutoffs are also derived. 相似文献
