We solve the quantum Hall problem exactly in a limit and show that the ground states can be organized in a fractal pattern consistent with the Haldane-Halperin hierarchy, and with the global phase diagram. We present wave functions for a large family of states, including those of Laughlin and Jain and also for states recently observed by Pan et al., and show that they coincide with the exact ones in the solvable limit. We submit that they establish an adiabatic continuation of our exact results to the experimentally accessible regime, thus providing a unified approach to the hierarchy states.  相似文献

We formulate a field theory for the Haldane-Rezayi quantum Hall state and its variants. A new essential ingredient is a class of super Chern-Simons field.  相似文献

It is shown that, in the absence of disorder, a quantum Hall liquid undergoes a second-order quantum phase transition as function of the applied magnetic field. The analysis is carried out in the framework of the Chem-Simons-Ginzburg-Landau theory which is shown to exhibit a nontrivial infrared stable fixed point. The corresponding critical exponents are found to be gaussian, and thus universal and independent of the filling fraction.  相似文献

The usefulness of quantum Hall effect (QHE) conductors and quantum dot (QD) devices is revealed by reviewing five remarkable effects. The first is the sensitive detection of terahertz (THz) radiation by QHE conductors. The second is the imaging of THz emission from non-equilibrium carriers in QHE conductors, by using scanning THz microscopes. The third is the single-photon detection of THz radiation in strong magnetic fields, which is carried out by incorporating a QHE electron system into a QD. Individual events of single-THz-photon absorption within the QD via cyclotron resonance cause the QD to electrically polarize, which, in turn, is detected as switches of the tunnel conductance through the QD. The fourth is the single-photon detection of THz radiation by using double QDs in the absence of a magnetic field. Both of the photon detectors are implemented in gate-voltage-induced lateral GaAs/AlGaAs QDs, and exploiting the extraordinary sensitivity of single-electron transistors to the charge. The fifth is the coherent control of nuclear spins in QHE conductors. Nuclear spins are (i) electrically polarized by unequally populating spin-split QHE edge channels via the hyperfine interaction, (ii) coherently controlled via pulsed nuclear magnetic resonance induced by local RF magnetic fields, and (iii) finally detected by the edge channels through resistance change of the Hall device. The controlled nuclear spins are limited to those along the edge channels, on the order of 109.  相似文献

Using D-brane physics, we study fractional quantum Hall solitons (FQHS) in ABJM-like theory in terms of type IIA dual geometries. In particular, we discuss a class of Chern-Simons (CS) quivers describing FQHS systems at low energy. These CS quivers come from R-R gauge fields interacting with D6-branes wrapped on 4-cycles, which reside within a blown up CP3 projective space. Based on the CS quiver method and mimicking the construction of del Pezzo surfaces in terms of CP2, we first give a model which corresponds to a single layer model of FQHS system, then we propose a multi-layer system generalizing the doubled CS field theory, which is used in the study of topological defect in graphene.  相似文献

Two scenarios for the collapse of the ν=1 quantum Hall liquid (QHL) state, with the effective quantum wire (QW) width defined by the Fermi vector kF, are studied. Here, ν for the QW is defined as the filling factor of Landau levels (LL) at the center of the QW. In the first one there is no electron redistribution at critical magnetic field , where the Fermi energy, EF, coincides with the bottom of the empty upper spin-split LL. For the ν=1 state is unstable due to exchange-correlation effects and lateral confinement. In the second scenario, a transition to the ν=2 state occurs, with much smaller width, at . The latter scenario is analyzed in the Hartree–Fock approximation (HFA). Here the Hartree contribution to the total energy affects drastically due to strong electron redistribution in the QW. In both scenarios, the exchange-enhanced g-factor is suppressed at Bcr. The critical fields, activation energy, and optical g-factor obtained in the first scenario are very close to the measured ones.  相似文献

We report results of a study of (integer) quantum Hall transitions in a single or multiple Landau levels for non-interacting electrons in disordered two-dimensional systems, obtained by projecting a tight-binding Hamiltonian to the corresponding magnetic subbands. In finite-size systems, we find that mesoscopic effects often dominate, leading to apparent non-universal scaling behavior in higher Landau levels. This is because localization length, which grows exponentially with Landau level index, exceeds the system sizes amenable to the numerical study at present. When band mixing between multiple Landau levels is present, mesoscopic effects cause a crossover from a sequence of quantum Hall transitions for weak disorder to classical behavior for strong disorder. This behavior may be of relevance to experimentally observed transitions between quantum Hall states and the insulating phase at low magnetic fields.  相似文献

We apply the methods of continuum mechanics to the study of the collective modes of the fractional quantum Hall liquid. Our main result is that at long-wavelength, there are two distinct modes of oscillations, while previous theories predicted only one. The two modes are shown to arise from the internal dynamics of shear stresses created by the Coulomb interaction in the liquid. Our prediction is supported by recent light scattering experiments, which report the observation of two long-wavelength modes in a quantum Hall liquid.  相似文献

We propose field theories for the bulk and edge of a quantum Hall state in the universality class of the Haldane-Rezayi wavefunction. The bulk theory is associated with the c = −2 conformal field theory. The topological properties of the state, such as the quasiparticle braiding statistics and ground state degeneracy on a torus, may be deduced from this conformal field theory. The 10-fold degeneracy on a torus is explained by the existence of a logarithmic operator in the c = −2 theory; this operator corresponds to a novel bulk excitation in the quantum Hall state. We argue that the edge theory is the c = 1 chiral Dirac fermion, which is related in a simple way to the c = −2 theory of the bulk. This theory is reformulated as a truncated version of a doublet of Dirac fermions in which the SU(2) symmetry - which corresponds to the spin-rotational symmetry of the quantum Hall system - is manifest and non-local. We make predictions for the current-voltage characteristics for transport through point contacts.  相似文献

An improved composite-boson theory of quantum Hall ferromagnets is formulated both for the monolayer and bilayer systems. In this scheme the field operator describes solely the physical degrees of freedom representing the deviation from the ground state. Skyrmions are charged excitations confined to the lowest Landau level. By evaluating the excitation energy of one skyrmion in the interlayer-coherent phase it is shown that the bilayer QH state becomes stabler as the interlayer density difference becomes larger.  相似文献
