Persistent homology captures the topology of a filtration—a one-parameter family of increasing spaces—in terms of a complete discrete invariant. This invariant is a multiset of intervals that denote the lifetimes of the topological entities within the filtration. In many applications of topology, we need to study a multifiltration: a family of spaces parameterized along multiple geometric dimensions. In this paper, we show that no similar complete discrete invariant exists for multidimensional persistence. Instead, we propose the rank invariant, a discrete invariant for the robust estimation of Betti numbers in a multifiltration, and prove its completeness in one dimension. A skew loop is a closed curve without parallel tangent lines. We prove: The only complete surfaces in R 3 with a point of positive curvature and no skew loops are the quadrics. In particular: Ellipsoids are the only closed surfaces without skew loops. Our efforts also yield results about skew loops on cylinders and positively curved surfaces. Decomposition systems with rapidly decaying elements (needlets) based on Hermite functions are introduced and explored. It is proved that the Triebel-Lizorkin and Besov spaces on ℝ d induced by Hermite expansions can be characterized in terms of the needlet coefficients. It is also shown that the Hermite-Triebel-Lizorkin and Besov spaces are, in general, different from the respective classical spaces. We address partition problems of Erd?s and Hajnal by showing that for all , if and carries a -dense ideal. If is measurable we show that for where is a very large ordinal less than that is closed under all primitive recursive ordinal operations. We prove a generalization to the totally real field case of the Waldspurger’s formula relating the Fourier coefficient of a half integral weight form and the central value of the L-function of an integral weight form. Our proof is based on a new interpretation of Waldspurger’s formula as a combination of two ingredients – an equality between global distributions, and a dichotomy result for theta correspondence. As applications we generalize the Kohnen–Zagier formula for holomorphic forms and prove the equivalence of the Ramanujan conjecture for half integral weight forms and a case of the Lindel?f hypothesis for integral weight forms. We also study the Kohnen space in the adelic setting. The first author was partially supported by NSF grant DMS-0070762. The second author was partially supported by NSF grant DMS-0355285. The main objective of the paper is to prove a geometric version of sharp trace and product estimates on null hypersurfaces with finite curvature flux. These estimates play a crucial role to control the geometry of such null hypersurfaces. The paper is based on an invariant version of the classical Littlewood–Paley theory, in a noncommutative setting, defined via heat flow on surfaces. We show that a compact Riemannian manifold with weakly pointwise 1/4-pinched sectional curvatures is either locally symmetric or diffeomorphic to a space form. More generally, we classify all compact, locally irreducible Riemannian manifolds M with the property that M × R 2 has non-negative isotropic curvature. We investigate the recently introduced notion of rotation numbers for periodic orbits of interval maps. We identify twist orbits, that is those orbits that are the simplest ones with given rotation number. We estimate from below the topological entropy of a map having an orbit with given rotation number. Our estimates are sharp: there are unimodal maps where the equality holds. We also discuss what happens for maps with larger modality. In the Appendix we present a new approach to the problem of monotonicity of entropy in one-parameter families of unimodal maps. Summary Given a collection of nested closed, convex symmetric sets and a linear functional, we find estimates which are within a logarithm term of being simultaneously asymptotically minimax. Moreover, these estimates can be constructed so that the loss of this logarithm term only occurs on a small subset of functions. These estimates are quasi-optimal since there do not exist estimators which do not lose a logarithm term on some part of the parameter spaces. This author was partially supported by an NSF Grant DMS-9123956This author was supported by an NSF Postdoctoral Research Fellowship  相似文献

We produce a model of ZFC in which there are no locally compact first countable S-spaces, and in which 2 0<2 1. A consequence of this is that in this model there are no locally compact, separable, hereditarily normal spaces of size ℵ1, answering a question of the second author [9]. Summary Letk be an infinite field of characteristic not equal to 2, 3, 5. In this paper, we construct a natural map from the set of orbits of certain prehomogeneous vector spaces to the set of isomorphism classes of Galois extensions ofk which are splitting fields of equations of certain degrees, and prove that the inverse image of this map corresponds bijectively with conjugacy classes of Galois homomorphisms.Oblatum 24-I-1992 & 23-IV-1992Both authors are supported by NSF Grant DMS-8803085, DMS-9101091; The first author was partially supported by NSA grant MDA904-91-H-0041  相似文献

Steingrimsson’s coloring complex and Jonsson’s unipolar complex are interpreted in terms of hyperplane arrangements. This viewpoint leads to short proofs that all coloring complexes and a large class of unipolar complexes have convex ear decompositions. These convex ear decompositions impose strong new restrictions on the chromatic polynomials of all finite graphs. Similar results are obtained for characteristic polynomials of submatroids of type ℬ n arrangements. The first author was supported by NSF grant DMS-0500638. We introduce a number of new tools for the study of relatively hyperbolic groups. First, given a relatively hyperbolic group G, we construct a nice combinatorial Gromov hyperbolic model space acted on properly by G, which reflects the relative hyperbolicity of G in many natural ways. Second, we construct two useful bicombings on this space. The first of these, preferred paths, is combinatorial in nature and allows us to define the second, a relatively hyperbolic version of a construction of Mineyev. As an application, we prove a group-theoretic analog of the Gromov-Thurston 2π Theorem in the context of relatively hyperbolic groups. The first author was supported in part by NSF Grant DMS-0504251. In this paper we analyze the solution of crack problems in three-dimensional linear elasticity by equivalent integral equations of the first kind on the crack surface. Besides existence and uniqueness we give sharp regularity results for the solution of these pseudodifferential equations. Two versions of Eskin's Wiener-Hopf technique are presented: the first one requires the factorization of matrix-valued symbols which is avoided in the second case. Based on these regularity results we show how to improve the boundary element Galerkin method for our integral equations by using special singular trial functions. We apply the approximation property and inverse assumption of these elements together with duality arguments and derive quasi-optimal asymptotic error estimates in a scale of Sobolev spaces.Dedicated to Prof. Dr.-Ing. We define a notion of strong shift equivalence for C*-correspondences and show that strong shift equivalent C*-correspondences have strongly Morita equivalent Cuntz-Pimsner algebras. Our analysis extends the fact that strong shift equivalent square matrices with non-negative integer entries give stably isomorphic Cuntz-Krieger algebras. Perturbation of operators and applications to frame theory   总被引:31,自引:0,他引:31
A celebrated classical result states that an operator U on a Banach space is invertible if it is close enough to the identity operator I in the sense that ‖I−U‖<1. Here we show that U actually is invertible under a much weaker condition. As an application we prove new theorems concerning stability offrames (and frame-like decompositions) under perturbation in both Hilbert spaces and Banach spaces. We show equivalence of several standard conditions for non-uniform hyperbolicity of complex rational functions, including the Topological Collet-Eckmann condition (TCE), Uniform Hyperbolicity on Periodic orbits, Exponential Shrinking of components of pre-images of small discs, backward Collet-Eckmann condition at one point, positivity of the infimum of Lyapunov exponents of finite invariant measures on the Julia set. The condition TCE is stated in purely topological terms, so we conclude that all these conditions are invariant under topological conjugacy.?For rational maps with one critical point in Julia set all the conditions above are equivalent to the usual Collet-Eckmann and backward Collet-Eckmann conditions. Thus the latter ones are invariant by topological conjugacy in the unicritical setting. We also prove that neither part of this stronger statement is valid in the multicritical case.
