A new finite volume (FV) approach with adaptive upwind convection is used to predict the two-dimensional unsteady flow in a square cavity. The fluid is air and natural convection is induced by differentially heated vertical walls. The formulation is made in terms of the vorticity and the integral velocity (induction) law. Biquadratic interpolation formulae are used to approximate the temperature and vorticity fields over the finite volumes, to which the conservation laws are applied in integral form. Image vorticity is used to enforce the zero-penetration condition at the cavity walls. Unsteady predictions are carried sufficiently forward in time to reach a steady state. Results are presented for a Prandtl number (Pr) of 0-71 and Rayleigh numbers equal to 103, 104 and 105. Both 11 × 11 and 21 × 21 meshes are used. The steady state predictions are compared with published results obtained using a finite difference (FD) scheme for the same values of Pr and Ra and the same meshes, as well as a numerical bench-mark solution. For the most part the FV predictions are closer to the bench-mark solution than are the FD predictions.  相似文献

The problem investigated is the unsteady problem of the internal waves generated in a two-layer flow by a certain periodic perturbation which leads to small deviations from the basic flow. A method of constructing an approximate solution uniformly valid throughout the region of variation of the variables and the parameters of the problem is indicated. It is confirmed that for large times and near-resonance parameters the motion of the fluid is described by the mixed problem for a cubic Schrödinger equation. Certain qualitative properties of the solution of this nonlinear problem are noted.Translated from Izvestiya Akademii Nauk SSSR, Mekhanika Zhidkosti i Gaza, No. 6, pp. 82–90, November–December, 1987.The author is grateful to V. The structure of confined wakes behind a square cylinder in a channel is investigated via the numerical solution of the unsteady Navier–Stokes equations. Vortex shedding behind the cylinder induces periodicity in the flow field. Details of the phenomenon are simulated through numerical flow visualization. The unsteady periodic wake can be characterized by the Strouhal number, which varies with the Reynolds number and the blockage ratio of the channel. The periodicity of the flow is, however, damped in the downstream region of a long duct. This damping may be attributed to the influence of side walls on the flow structure.  相似文献

Here we describe analytical and numerical modifications that extend the Differential Reduced Ejector/ mixer Analysis (DREA), a combined analytical/numerical, multiple species ejector/mixing code developed for preliminary design applications, to apply to periodic unsteady flow. An unsteady periodic flow modelling capability opens a range of pertinent simulation problems including pulse detonation engines (PDE), internal combustion engine ICE applications, mixing enhancement and more fundamental fluid dynamic unsteadiness, e.g. fan instability/vortex shedding problems. Although mapping between steady and periodic forms for a scalar equation is a classical problem in applied mathematics, we will show that extension to systems of equations and, moreover, problems with complex initial conditions are more challenging. Additionally, the inherent large gradient initial condition singularities that are characteristic of mixing flows and that have greatly influenced the DREA code formulation, place considerable limitations on the use of numerical solution methods. Fortunately, using the combined analytical–numerical form of the DREA formulation, a successful formulation is developed and described. Comparison of this method with experimental measurements for jet flows with excitation shows reasonable agreement with the simulation. Other flow fields are presented to demonstrate the capabilities of the model. As such, we demonstrate that unsteady periodic effects can be included within the simple, efficient, coarse grid DREA implementation that has been the original intent of the DREA development effort, namely, to provide a viable tool where more complex and expensive models are inappropriate. The problem of the radial expansion of a gas into a medium of low pressure from a suddenly turned on steady source with M ≥1 is examined in the report. The examination concerns mainly the unsteady flow of gas in the initial stage of expansion. The laws of motion of the surface of a powerful explosion, which determine the structure of the region of flow, are established for the initial stage of expansion with the help of a simple approximate solution of the problem. A method is proposed and a numerical solution of the problem is obtained for a viscous thermally conducting gas in a general formulation.  相似文献

The present paper proposes a Lagrangian criterion of unsteady flow separation for two-dimensional periodic flows based on the principle of weighted averaging zero skin-friction given by Haller(HALLER, G. Exact theory of unsteady separation for two-dimensional flows. Journal of Fluid Mechanics, 512, 257–311(2004)). By analyzing the distribution of the finite-time Lyapunov exponent(FTLE) along the no-slip wall, it can be found that the periodic separation takes place at the point of the zero FTLE.This new criterion is verified with an analytical solution of the separation bubble and a numerical simulation of lid-driven cavity flows.  相似文献

A relatively simple, yet efficient and accurate finite difference method is developed for the solution of the unsteady boundary layer equations for both laminar and turbulent flows. The numerical procedure is subjected to rigorous validation tests in the laminar case, comparing its predictions with exact analytical solutions, asymptotic solutions, and/or experimental results. Calculations of periodic laminar boundary layers are performed from low to very high oscillation frequencies, for small and large amplitudes, for zero as well as adverse time-mean pressure gradients, and even in the presence of significant flow reversal. The numerical method is then applied to predict a relatively simple experimental periodic turbulent boundary layer, using two well-known quasi-steady closure models. The predictions are shown to be in good agreement with the measurements, thereby demonstrating the suitability of the present numerical scheme for handling periodic turbulent boundary layers. The method is thus a useful tool for the further development of turbulence models for more complex unsteady flows.

An approximate solution to the problem of flow of a viscous incompressible dissipative fluid past an infinite vertical porous plate embedded in a porous medium is presented here. The plate temperature is assumed to be oscillating about a constant mean temperature. Mean velocity and mean temperature, the transient velocity and temperature profiles are shown graphically. The mean skin-friction and the mean rate of heat transfer are also shown graphically. The expressions for the amplitude and the phase of the skin-friction and the rate of heat transfer are derived and their numerical values are listed in Tables. The effects of different parameters governing the unsteady flow are discussed. Received on 23 November 1998  相似文献

A solution is obtained, within the framework of the boundary layer theory, to the problem of the unsteady flow created by a two-dimensional jet source for a given momentum flux variation with time. In particular, aperiodic and periodic momentum variations are examined, and a qualitative analog with turbulent flow is noted for the latter.  相似文献

In this study, creeping and inertial incompressible fluid flows through three-dimensional porous media are considered, and an analytical–numerical approach is employed to calculate the associated permeability and apparent permeability. The multiscale homogenization method for periodic structures is applied to the Stokes and Navier–Stokes equations (aided by a control-volume type argument in the latter case), to derive the appropriate cell problems and effective properties. Numerical solutions are then obtained through Galerkin finite-element formulations. The implementations are validated, and results are presented for flows through cubic lattices of cylinders, and through the dendritic zone found at the solid–liquid interface during solidification of metals. For the interdendritic flow problem, a geometric configuration for the periodic cell is built by the approximate matching of experimental and numerical results for the creeping-flow problem; inertial effects are then quantified upon solution of the inertial-flow problem. Finally, the functional behavior of the apparent permeability results is analyzed in the light of existing macroscopic seepage laws. The findings contribute to the (numerical) verification of the validity of such laws.  相似文献

In this paper we have investigated free-surface unsteady viscous flow through porous media using a finite difference technique via primitive formulation. A transformation has been used to convert the irregular flow domain into a rectangular domain. Two illustrations have been presented in case of a standing wave problem and a cavity flow problem with a free surface. The method is found satisfactory for numerical solution for Reynolds number upto 200.  相似文献

Summary A boundary integral equation method is proposed for approximate numerical and exact analytical solutions to fully developed incompressible laminar flow in straight ducts of multiply or simply connected cross-section. It is based on a direct reduction of the problem to the solution of a singular integral equation for the vorticity field in the cross section of the duct. For the numerical solution of the singular integral equation, a simple discretization of it along the cross-section boundary is used. It leads to satisfactory rapid convergency and to accurate results. The concept of hydrodynamic moment of inertia is introduced in order to easily calculate the flow rate, the main velocity, and the fRe-factor. As an example, the exact analytical and, comparatively, the approximate numerical solution of the problem of a circular pipe with two circular rods are presented. In the literature, this is the first non-trivial exact analytical solution of the problem for triply connected cross section domains. The solution to the Saint-Venant torsion problem, as a special case of the laminar duct-flow problem, is herein entirely incorporated.  相似文献

A high‐order compact finite‐difference lattice Boltzmann method (CFDLBM) is proposed and applied to accurately compute steady and unsteady incompressible flows. Herein, the spatial derivatives in the lattice Boltzmann equation are discretized by using the fourth‐order compact FD scheme, and the temporal term is discretized with the fourth‐order Runge–Kutta scheme to provide an accurate and efficient incompressible flow solver. A high‐order spectral‐type low‐pass compact filter is used to stabilize the numerical solution. An iterative initialization procedure is presented and applied to generate consistent initial conditions for the simulation of unsteady flows. A sensitivity study is also conducted to evaluate the effects of grid size, filtering, and procedure of boundary conditions implementation on accuracy and convergence rate of the solution. The accuracy and efficiency of the proposed solution procedure based on the CFDLBM method are also examined by comparison with the classical LBM for different flow conditions. Two test cases considered herein for validating the results of the incompressible steady flows are a two‐dimensional (2‐D) backward‐facing step and a 2‐D cavity at different Reynolds numbers. Results of these steady solutions computed by the CFDLBM are thoroughly compared with those of a compact FD Navier–Stokes flow solver. Three other test cases, namely, a 2‐D Couette flow, the Taylor's vortex problem, and the doubly periodic shear layers, are simulated to investigate the accuracy of the proposed scheme in solving unsteady incompressible flows. Results obtained for these test cases are in good agreement with the analytical solutions and also with the available numerical and experimental results. The study shows that the present solution methodology is robust, efficient, and accurate for solving steady and unsteady incompressible flow problems even at high Reynolds numbers. The interaction between the hydrodynamic forces of a flow field and the elastic forces of adjacent deformable boundaries is described by elastohydrodynamics, a coupled fluid–elastic membrane problem. Direct numerical solution of the unsteady, highly non-linear equations requires that the dynamic evolution of both the flow field and the domain shape be determined as part of the solution, since neither is known a priori. This paper describes a numerical algorithm based on the deformable spatial domain space–time (DSD/ST) finite element method for the unsteady motion of an incompressible, viscous fluid with elastic membrane interaction. The unsteady Navier–Stoke and elastic membrane equations are solved separately using an iterative procedure by the GMRES technique with an incomplete lower-upper (ILU) decomposition at every time instant. One-dimensional, two-dimensional and deformable domain model problems are used to demonstrate the capabilities and accuracy of the present algorithm. Both steady state and transient problems are studied. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

This paper presents efficient alternative numerical methods for an implicit solution of the harmonic balance equation system for analysing temporal periodic unsteady flows. The proposed method employs approximate factorisation to decouple the common residual term and the time spectral source term of a harmonic balance equation system when it is discretised implicitly. With this approximate factorisation, the complexity of implicit solution of the discrete system is greatly reduced. The common residual term can be dealt with using a lower-upper symmetric-Gauss-Seidel (LU-SGS) method and the time spectral source term is integrated using a Jacobi iteration (JI) or one step Gauss-Seidel (GS) iteration, leading to the LU-SGS/JI method or LU-SGS/GS method. The NASA stage 35 compressor and the 1.5 stage Aachen turbine were used to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed methods in stabilising solution and its advantages in comparison with the existing lower-upper symmetric-Gauss-Seidel/block Jacobi (LU-SGS/BJ) method. The LU-SGS/GS method and the LU-SGS/JI method are more robust than the LU-SGS/BJ method in stabilising solution. The LU-SGS/GS method also has faster and tighter convergence and lower memory consumption in comparison with the LU-SGS/BJ method.  相似文献

The problem of periodic flow of an incompressible fluid through a pipe, which is driven by an oscillating pressure gradient (e.g. a reciprocating piston), is investigated in the case of a large Reynolds number. This process is described by a singularly perturbed parabolic equation with a periodic right‐hand side, where the singular perturbation parameter is the viscosity ν. The periodic solution of this problem is a solution of the Navier–Stokes equations with cylindrical symmetry. We are interested in constructing a parameter‐robust numerical method for this problem, i.e. a numerical method generating numerical approximations that converge uniformly with respect to the parameter ν and require a bounded time, independent of the value of ν, for their computation. Our method comprises a standard monotone discretization of the problem on non‐standard piecewise uniform meshes condensing in a neighbourhood of the boundary layer. The transition point between segments of the mesh with different step sizes is chosen in accordance with the behaviour of the analytic solution in the boundary layer region. In this paper we construct the numerical method and discuss the results of extensive numerical experiments, which show experimentally that the method is parameter‐robust. A numerical study of the unsteady phenomena resulting of periodic passing wakes is presented. An unsteady passing wake boundary condition is implemented in a three-dimensional Navier–Stokes code. Unsteady computations are performed to evaluate the capability of the code to simulate the rotor–stator interaction flow. The analysis of the flow structures shows the vortical disturbances and the migration of the incoming wakes through the blade passage. This physical analysis allows to separate the main origins of the losses.  相似文献
