Consider the shearing flow of a viscoelastic fluid trapped by surface tension between a cone and a plate. An asymptotic analysis of this problem in the limit of small gap angle has been done. This limit is realized in many practical situations. It is assumed that the Deborah number De, the Reynolds number Re, and the retardation parameter β are all order unity and that the shape of the free surface is very nearly spherical. Closed form analytic expressions are obtained for the leading terms of the primary and weak secondary motion of the fluid as well as the meniscus shape. It is found that the velocity field is bounded and continuous if and only if . There is a family of curves in the De-β plane on which the velocity field has a removable singularity at the origin. The secondary flow is made up of either one or two toroidal vortices. The meniscus has a bulge near the rotating cone and a trough near the stationary plate.  相似文献

Flow visualization has been conducted in a rotating cavity, comprising two steel discs and a peripheral polycarbonate shroud, for dimensionless flow rates of air up to |Cw|8000 and rotational Reynolds number up to Reφ106. For all the experiments, the ratio of the inner to outer radii of the discs was 0.1 and the ratio of the axial clearance between the discs to their outer radii was 0.133; five different shroud geometries were tested. The flow visualization has confirmed that the flow structure comprises a source region near the shroud, laminar or turbulent Ekman layers on the discs, a sink layer near the centre of the cavity, and an interior core of rotating fluid. Above a certain flow rate, this structure was found to be unstable; heating one disc tended to stabilize the flow. For isothermal flow, measurements of the size of the source region were in good agreement with values predicted from a simple theoretical model.  相似文献

The present paper deals with the analysis of boundary layer flow and heat transfer of a dusty fluid over a stretching sheet with the effect of non-uniform heat source/sink. Here we consider two types of heating processes namely (i) prescribed surface temperature and (ii) prescribed surface heat flux. The momentum and thermal boundary layer equations of motion are solved numerically using Runge Kutta Fehlberg fourth–fifth order method (RKF45 Method). The effects of fluid particle interaction parameter, Eckert number, Prandtl number, Number of dust particle and non-uniform heat generation/absorption parameter on temperature distribution are analyzed and also the effect of wall temperature gradient function and wall temperature function are tabulated and discussed.  相似文献

The method of domain perturbation developed by Joseph is used to calculate velocity and stress profiles in a slightly misaligned cone-and-plate rheometer where the cone is spinning and the plate is stationary. Results for a Newtonian fluid, a Criminale-Ericksen-Filbey fluid, an upper-convected Maxwell fluid, and a White-Metzner fluid are presented and compared with earlier results in which the cone is stationary and the plate is spinning (Dudgeon and Wedgewood, 1993). Streamlines calculated for the Newtonian fluid show a very small recirculation region near the stationary plate. Velocity and stress contours are symmetric around the plane of largest gap width. For the elastic fluids studied, streamlines are asymmetric. The fluid response lags where the fluid is dominated by memory effects. Much larger recirculation regions are calculated for fluids dominated by shear thinning. These recirculation regions contain a large fraction of the fluid in the apparatus and have the effect of changing the shape of the flow domain for the remaining fluid that rotates around the cone's axis. Elasticity also has a pronounced effect on the stress profile, indicating that the accuracy of the cone and plate may be compromised even for small mis-alignments.  相似文献

The paper reports an exact kinematics for the squeezing flow from a cone of a general viscoelastic fluid. To obtain numerical values for the stresses, a network model that allows stress overshoot and shear-thinning in the start-up of a shear flow is adopted. Both these features are important in this flow. For the special case of an Oldroyd-B fluid it is shown that there is a limiting Weissenberg number above which at least one component of the stresses increases unboundedly with time.  相似文献

A micropolar model for axisymmetric blood flow through an axially nonsymmetreic but radially symmetric mild stenosis tapered artery is presented. To estimate the effect of the stenosis shape, a suitable geometry has been considered such that the axial shape of the stenosis can be changed easily just by varying a parameter (referred to as the shape parameter). The model is also used to study the effect of the taper angle Ф. Flow parameters such as the velocity, the resistance to flow (the resistance impedance), the wall shear stress distribution in the stenotic region and its magnitude at the maximum height of the stenosis (stenosis throat) have been computed for different values of the shape parameter n, the taper angle Ф, the coupling number N and the micropolar parameter m. It is shown that the resistance to flow decreases with increasing the shape parameter n and the micropolar parameter m while it increases with increasing the coupling number N. So, the magnitude of the resistance impedance is higher for a micropolar fluid than that for a Newtonian fluid model. Finally, the velocity profile, the wall shear stress distribution in the stenotic region and its magnitude at the maximum height of the stenosis are discussed for different values of the parameters involved on the problem.  相似文献

The paper considers the flow of a power-law fluid past a vertical stretching sheet. Effects of variable thermal conductivity and non-uniform heat source/sink on the heat transfer are addressed. The thermal conductivity is assumed to vary linearly with temperature. Similarity transformation is used to convert the governing partial differential equations into a set of coupled, non-linear ordinary differential equations. Two different types of boundary heating are considered, namely Prescribed power-law Surface Temperature (PST) and Prescribed power-law Heat Flux (PHF). Shooting method is used to obtain the numerical solution for the resulting boundary value problems. The effects of Chandrasekhar number, Grashof number, Prandtl number, non-uniform heat source/sink parameters, wall temperature parameter and variable thermal conductivity parameter on the dynamics are shown graphically in several plots. The skin friction and heat transfer coefficients are tabulated for a range of values of the parameters. Present study reveals that in a gravity affected flow buoyancy effect has a significant say in the control of flow and heat transfer.  相似文献

This paper presents a numerical study of the flow and heat transfer of an incompressible homogeneous second grade type fluid above a flat plate moving with constant velocity U. Such a viscoelastic fluid is at rest and the motion is created by the sheet. The effects of the non-Newtonian nature of the fluid are governed by the local Deborah number K (the ratio between the relaxation time of the fluid and the characteristic time of the flow). When , a new analytical solution for this flow is presented and the effects of fluid's elasticity on flow characteristics, dimensionless stream function and its derivatives are analysed in a wide domain of K. A novel result of the analysis is that a change in the flow solution's behaviour occurs when the dimensionless stream function at the edge of the boundary layer, f, equals 1.0. It is found that velocity at a point decreases with increase in the elasticity of the fluid and, as expected, the amount of fluid entrained diminishes when the effects of fluid's elasticity are augmented. In our heat transfer analyses we assume that the surface temperature has a power-law variation. Two cases are studied, namely, (i) the sheet with prescribed surface temperature (PST case) and (ii) the sheet with prescribed heat flux (PHF case). Local similarity heat-transfer solutions are given for PST case when s=2 (the wall temperature parameter) whereas when a similarity solution takes place in the case of prescribed wall heat flux. The numerical results obtained are fairly in good agreement with the aforementioned analytical ones.  相似文献

This work is concerned with the removal of unwanted fluid through the source–sink pair. The source consists of fluid issuing out of a nozzle in the form of a jet and the sink is a pipe that is kept some distance from the source pipe. Of concern is the percentage of source fluid sucked through the sink. The experiments have been carried in a large glass water tank. The source nozzle diameter is 6 mm and the sink pipe diameter is either 10 or 20 mm. The horizontal and vertical separations and angles between these source and sink pipes are adjustable. The flow was visualized using KMnO4 dye, planer laser induced fluorescence and particle streak photographs. To obtain the effectiveness (that is percentage of source fluid entering the sink pipe), titration method is used. The velocity profiles with and without the sink were obtained using particle image velocimetry. The sink flow rate to obtain a certain effectiveness increase dramatically with lateral separation. The sink diameter and the angle between source and the sink axes don’t influence effectiveness as much as the lateral separation.  相似文献

The influence of partial slip, thermal radiation, chemical reaction and temperature‐dependent fluid properties on heat and mass transfer in hydro‐magnetic micropolar fluid flow over an inclined permeable plate with constant heat flux and non‐uniform heat source/sink is studied. The transverse magnetic field is assumed as a function of the distance from the origin. Also it is assumed that the fluid viscosity and the thermal conductivity vary as an inverse function and linear function of temperature, respectively. With the use of the similarity transformation, the governing system of non‐linear partial differential equations are transformed into non‐linear ordinary differential equations and are solved numerically using symbolic software MATHEMATICA 7.0 (Wolfram Research, Champaign, IL). The numerical values obtained for the velocity, microrotation, temperature, species concentration, skin friction coefficient and the Nusselt number are presented through graphs and tables for several sets of values of the parameters. The effects of various physical parameters on the flow and heat transfer characteristics are discussed.Copyright © 2011 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Free surface shape and cusp formation are analyzed by considering two-dimensional viscous flow due to a line source or a line sink below the free surface where the strength of source/sink is given arbitrarily. In the analysis, the Stokes' approximation is used and surface tension effects are included, but gravity is neglected. The solution is obtained analytically by using conformal mapping and complex function theory. From the solution, shapes of the free surface are shown and the formation of a cusp on the free surface is discussed. As the capillary number decreases in negative, the free surface shape becomes singular and in a real fluid a cusp should form on the free surface below some negative critical capillary number. Typically, streamline patterns for some capillary numbers are also shown. As the small capillary number vanishes, the solution is reduced to a linearized potential flow solution.  相似文献

This paper presents a numerical study for the unsteady flow of a magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) Sisko fluid in annular pipe. The fluid is assumed to be electrically conducting in the presence of a uniform magnetic field. Based on the constitutive relationship of a Sisko fluid, the non‐linear equation governing the flow is first modelled and then numerically solved. The effects of the various parameters especially the power index n, the material parameter of the non‐Newtonian fluid b and the magnetic parameter B on the flow characteristics are explored numerically and presented through several graphs. Moreover, the shear‐thinning and shear‐thickening characteristics of the non‐Newtonian Sisko fluid are investigated and a comparison is also made with the Newtonian fluid. Exact solutions to the plane and axi-symmetric stagnation flows of an Oldroyd-B fluid are reported. It is found that a steady flow is possible if the Weissenberg numberWi, defined by the product of the Maxwellian relaxation time and the shear rate at infinity, satisfies – 1/2 <Wi < 1/m, wherem = 1 in an axisym-metric flow andm = 2 in a plane flow. Furthermore, the fluid elasticity always decreases the boundary-layer thickness. An Oldroyd-B fluid with the parameters matched those of a typical Boger fluid behaves essentially like a Newtonian fluid in a stagnation flow.  相似文献

The effects of viscous dissipation and heat source/sink on fully developed mixed convection for the laminar flow in a parallel-plate vertical channel are investigated. The plate exchanges heat with an external fluid. Both conditions of equal and different reference temperatures of the external fluid are considered.First, the simple cases of the negligible Brinkman number or the negligible Grashof number are solved analytically. Then, the combined effects of buoyancy forces and viscous dissipation in the presence of heat source/sink are analyzed by a perturbation series method valid for small values of the perturbation parameter. To relax the conditions on the perturbation parameter, the velocity and temperature fields are solved by using the Runge-Kutta fourth-order method with the shooting technique. The velocity, temperature, skin friction, and Nusselt numbers at the plates are discussed numerically and presented through graphs.  相似文献

Plane nonlinear fluid flows through a porous medium which simulate a sink located at the same distance from the roof and floor of the stratum for two nonlinear flow laws are constructed. The following flow laws are taken: a power law and a law of special form reducing to analytic functions in the hodograph plane.  相似文献

The USM-θmodel of Bingham fluid for dense two-phase turbulent flow was developed, which combines the second-order moment model for two-phase turbulence with the particle kinetic theory for the inter-particle collision. In this model, phases interaction and the extra term of Bingham fluid yield stress are taken into account. An algorithm for USM-θmodel in dense two-phase flow was proposed, in which the influence of particle volume fraction is accounted for. This model was used to simulate turbulent flow of Bingham fluid single-phase and dense liquid-particle two-phase in pipe. It is shown USM-θmodel has better prediction result than the five-equation model, in which the particle-particle collision is modeled by the particle kinetic theory, while the turbulence of both phase is simulated by the two-equation turbulence model. The USM-θmodel was then used to simulate the dense two-phase turbulent up flow of Bingham fluid with particles. With the increasing of the yield stress, the velocities of Bingham and particle decrease near the pipe centre. Comparing the two-phase flow of Bingham-particle with that of liquid-particle, it is found the source term of yield stress has significant effect on flow.  相似文献

The flow of an incompressible couple stress fluid in an annulus with local constriction at the outer wall is considered. This configuration is intended as a simple model for studying blood flow in a stenosed artery when a catheter is inserted into it. The effects couple stress fluid parameters α and σ, height of the constriction (ε), and ratio of radii (k) on the impedance and wall shear stresses are studied graphically. Graphical results show that the resistance to the flow as well as the wall shear stress increases as the ratio of the radii increases and decreases as the couple stress fluid parameters increases.  相似文献

An improved immersed boundary method using a mass source/sink as well as momentum forcing is developed for simulating flows over or inside complex geometries. The present method is based on the Navier–Stokes solver adopting the fractional step method and a staggered Cartesian grid system. A more accurate formulation of the mass source/sink is derived by considering mass conservation of the virtual cells in the fluid crossed by the immersed boundary. Two flow problems (the decaying vortex problem and uniform flow past a circular cylinder) are used to validate the proposed formulation. The results indicate that the accuracy near the immersed boundary is improved by introducing the accurate mass source/sink. Copyright © 2006 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

This paper is concerned with the effect of fluid inertia on experimental oscillatory stress data taken from a Controlled Stress Rheometer. A linear viscoelastic theory is developed which includes the effect of fluid inertia for cone and plate, parallel plate and concentric cylinder geometries. This theory is used to interpret dynamic data for both a slightly elastic and a highly viscoelastic fluid. It is shown that intertial effects are very small for both a cone and plate and parallel plate geometries. Inertial effects, however, can be important in the concentric cylinder geometry.  相似文献

This paper examines the unsteady two‐dimensional flow of a second‐grade fluid between parallel disks in the presence of an applied magnetic field. The continuity and momentum equations governing the unsteady two‐dimensional flow of a second‐grade fluid are reduced to a single differential equation through similarity transformations. The resulting differential system is computed by a homotopy analysis method. Graphical results are discussed for both suction and blowing cases. In addition, the derived results are compared with the homotopy perturbation solution in a viscous fluid (Math. Probl. Eng., DOI: 10.1155/2009/603916 ).
