Summary. Let (X t ,tZ) be a linear sequence with non-Gaussian innovations and a spectral density which varies regularly at low frequencies. This includes situations, known as strong (or long-range) dependence, where the spectral density diverges at the origin. We study quadratic forms of bivariate Appell polynomials of the sequence (X t ) and provide general conditions for these quadratic forms, adequately normalized, to converge to a non-Gaussian distribution. We consider, in particular, circumstances where strong and weak dependence interact. The limit is expressed in terms of multiple Wiener-It? integrals involving correlated Gaussian measures. In this note, first, we give a very short new proof of the theorem which yields a lower bound for the surface area of Voronoi cells of unit ball packings in E d and implies Rogers' upper bound for the density of unit ball packings in E d for all d ≥ 2. Second we sharpen locally a classical result of Gauss by finding the locally smallest surface area Voronoi cells of lattice unit ball packings in E 3.  We study the robustness under perturbations of mixing times, by studying mixing times of random walks in percolation clusters inside boxes in Z d . We show that for d≥2 and p>p c (Z d ), the mixing time of simple random walk on the largest cluster inside is Θ(n 2 ) – thus the mixing time is robust up to a constant factor. The mixing time bound utilizes the Lovàsz-Kannan average conductance method. This is the first non-trivial application of this method which yields a tight result. Let S be a set of noncrossing triangular obstacles in R 3 with convex hull H . A triangulation T of H is compatible with S if every triangle of S is the union of a subset of the faces of T. The weight of T is the sum of the areas of the triangles of T. We give a polynomial-time algorithm that computes a triangulation compatible with S whose weight is at most a constant times the weight of any compatible triangulation. One motivation for studying minimum-weight triangulations is a connection with ray shooting. A particularly simple way to answer a ray-shooting query (``Report the first obstacle hit by a query ray') is to walk through a triangulation along the ray, stopping at the first obstacle. Under a reasonably natural distribution of query rays, the average cost of a ray-shooting query is proportional to triangulation weight. A similar connection exists for line-stabbing queries (``Report all obstacles hit by a query line'). Received February 3, 1997, and in revised form August 21, 1998.  相似文献

Soliton solutions with cylindrical symmetry are investigated within the nonlinear -model disregarding the Skyrme stabilization term. The solitons are stabilized by quantization of the collective breathing mode and collapse in the 0 limit. It is shown that for such a stabilization mechanism the model, apart from solitons with integer topological numberB, admits solitons with half-oddB.  We present necessary and sufficient conditions for uniform exponential expansiveness of discrete skew-product flows, in terms of uniform complete admissibility of the pair (c 0(N, X), c 0(N, X)). We give discrete and continuous characterizations for uniform exponential expansiveness of linear skew-product flows, using the uniform complete admissibility of the pairs (c 0(N, X), c 0(N, X)) and (C 0(R +, X), C 0(R +, X)), respectively. Uniform stability and localization results for the higher order and singular Kobayashi metrics are established. As an application we obtain the non-tangential weighted limits of these metrics in an h-extendible boundary point of a bounded domain in C n. We consider the existence of distributional (or L 2 ) solutions of the matrix refinement equation where P is an r×r matrix with trigonometric polynomial entries. One of the main results of this paper is that the above matrix refinement equation has a compactly supported distributional solution if and only if the matrix P (0) has an eigenvalue of the form 2 n , . A characterization of the existence of L 2 -solutions of the above matrix refinement equation in terms of the mask is also given. A concept of L 2 -weak stability of a (finite) sequence of function vectors is introduced. Summary. We consider the heat equation in a smooth domain of R with Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions. It is solved by using its integral formulation with double-layer potentials, where the unknown , the jump of the solution through the boundary, belongs to an anisotropic Sobolev space. We approximate by the Galerkin method and use a prewavelet basis on , which characterizes the anisotropic space. The use of prewavelets allows to compress the stiffness matrix from to when N is the size of the matrix, and the condition number of the compressed matrix is uniformly bounded as the initial one in the prewavelet basis. Finally we show that the compressed scheme converges as fast as the Galerkin one, even for the Dirichlet problem which does not admit a coercive variational formulation. Summary. The use of mixed finite element methods is well-established in the numerical approximation of the problem of nearly incompressible elasticity, and its limit, Stokes flow. The question of stability over curved elements for such methods is of particular significance in the p version, where, since the element size remains fixed, exact representation of the curved boundary by (large) elements is often used. We identify a mixed element which we show to be optimally stable in both p and h refinement over curvilinear meshes. We prove optimal p version (up to ) and h version (p = 2, 3) convergence for our element, and illustrate its optimality through numerical experiments. Let be an algebraic type. To each classK of -algebras a consequence relation K defined on the set of -equations is assigned. Some weak forms of the deduction theorem for K and their algebraic counterparts are investigated. The (relative) congruence extension property (CEP) and its variants are discussed.CEP is shown to be equivalent to a parameter-free form of the deduction theorem for the consequence K .CEP has a strong impact on the structure ofK: for many quasivarietiesK,CEP implies thatK is actually a variety. This phenomenon is thoroughly discussed in Section 5. We also discuss first-order definability of relative principal congruences. This property is equivalent to the fact that the deduction theorem for K is determined by a finite family of finite sets of equations. The following quasivarietal generalization of McKenzie's [26] finite basis theorem is proved:LetK be quasivariety of algebras of finite type in which the principalK-congruences are definable. ThenK is finitely axiomatizable iff either the classK FSI (of all relatively finitely subdirectly irreducible members ofK) or the class KSI (of all relatively subdirectly irreducible members ofK) is strictly elementary.Applications of the theory to Heyting, interior, Sugihara, and ukasiewicz algebras are provided.Presented by R.  We prove that for every family of n pairwise intersecting simple closed planar curves in general position, at least (4/5)n 2O(n) points lie on more than one curve. We study the Hopfield model at temperature 1, when thenumber M(N) of patterns grows a bit slower than N. We reach a goodunderstanding of the model whenever M(N)≤N/(log N)11.  The purpose of this paper is on the one hand to extend and generalize, in terms of Clifford translations, some results in a previous paper (Math. Denote byn(G) the greatest convex directed normal subgroup of G, byo(G) the greatest convex right-ordered subgroup of G, and byr(G) a set of all elements x of G such that x and x−1 are comparable with any element of P± (the collection of all group elements comparable with an identity element). Summary. We describe and analyze a multigrid algorithm for finite element approximations of second order elliptic boundary value problems with weightedextended b-splines (web-splines). This new technique provides high accuracy with relatively low-dimensional subspaces, does not require any grid generation, and is ideally suited for hierarchical solution techniques. In particular, we show that the standard W-cycle yields uniform convergence, i.e., the required number of iterations is bounded independent of the grid width.
