We prove that on a closed, smooth, convex surface of revolution , whose poles are not flattening points, there exists only a countable set of parallels n. Each of these parallels cuts surface into two parts so that one of the parts, , admits nontrivial, infinitesimal bendings in the process of which all the points of its boundary n are displaced on a preassigned, conic sleeve K that is coaxial with the surface. The sequence of such parallels n converges to parallel *, which has the following properties: 1) the tangent cone to surface along * is orthogonal to sleeve K; 2) surface , cut off from surface by parallel *, has rigidity of first order in the indicated class of bendings.Translated from Ukrainskii Geometricheskii Sbornik, No. 33, pp. 3–8, 1990.  相似文献

Given a ratio , >>0, and a triangle ABC, on the sides and , using ratios , and , three circles of Apollonius are denned. In this paper, we will show that the three centers are collinear, the circles are coaxal and develop a necessary and sufficient condition that these circles intersect. J. A. Hoskins, W. D. Hoskins and R. G. Stanton obtained these results in a recent paper using algebraic computation. Our aim is to establish all these results using only results from elementary Euclidean geometry and thereby uncovering more geometric insights and avoid lengthy calculations.  相似文献

A Boolean term order is a total order on subsets of [n] ={1,..., n} such that for all [n], , and for all with ( ) = . Boolean term orders arise in several different areas of mathematics, including Gröbner basis theory for the exterior algebra, and comparative probability.The main result of this paper is that Boolean term orders correspond to one-element extensions of the oriented matroid M(Bn), where Bn is the root system {ei : 1 i n} {ei ± ej : 1 i < j n}. This establishes Boolean term orders in the framework of the Baues problem, in the sense of (Reiner, 1998). We also define a notion of coherence for a Boolean term order, and a flip relation between different term orders. Other results include examples of noncoherent term orders, including an example exhibiting flip deficiency, and enumeration of Boolean term orders for small values of n.  相似文献

For 0<<1, let . The questions addressed in this paper are motivated by a result due to Strassen: almost surely, lim sup t U ((t))=1–exp{–4(–1)–1}. We show that Strassen's result is closely related to a large deviations principle for the family of random variablesU (t), t>0. Also, when =1,U (t)0 almost surely and we obtain some bounds on the rate of convergence. Finally, we prove an analogous limit theorem for discounted averages of the form as 0, whereD is a suitable discount function. These results also hold for symmetric random walks.  相似文献

Summary We consider the generating function of the voltime of the Wiener sausageC (t), which is the -neighbourhood of the Wiener path in the time interval [0,t]. For <0, the limiting behavior fort, up to logarithmic equivalence, had been determined in a celebrated work of Donsker and Varadhan. For >0 it had been investigated by van den Berg and Tóth, but in contrast to the case <0, there is no simple expression for the exponential rate known. We give an extension of the Fenchel-Borsuk result by introducing the total absolute torsion-curvature KT() for regular curves whose tangent indicatrix is a piecewise regular curve (-closed curves). Zusammenfassung Es wird ein System mit exponentiellem Zugang () und exponentieller Abfertigung () untersucht, bei dem sich die ungeduldigen Kunden nur dann der Warteschlange anschließen, wenn sie eine kurze Abfertigungszeit erwarten. Die (bekannte) Lösung des Problems führt auf eine unendliche PotenzreiheH(; ), die von zwei Parametern abhängt (=/; enthält ein Maß für die Ungeduld der Kunden). Für kleine Werte von und/oder genügen wenige Reihenglieder zur Berechnung vonH(; ). Für große Werte von und Werte von nahe bei 1 konvergiert die Reihe nur langsam. Für diesen Fall wird eine Integraldarstellung als Näherung hergeleitet, mit der man die kennzeichnenden Parameter des Systems (die mittlere LängeL der Schlange und ihre VarianzV) einfach findet. Schließlich werden die günstigsten Bedingungen (0) so berechnet, daß der Gewinn aus dem Betrieb eines solchen Systems möglichst groß wird. Mit wachsendem AufwandverhältnisA/E (A = Kosten je mögliche Abfertigung,E = Einnahme je wirkliche Abfertigung) nimmt 0 immer größere Werte an. Der je Zeiteinheit erzielbare größte GewinnG max sinkt damit rasch ab.
Summary Impatient customers arriving exponentially at a single exponential service channel will join a queue only if they expect to be served within a short interval of time. The (known) solution to this problem involves an infinite power seriesH(;) depending on two parameters (=/; indirectly accounts for the degree of impatience of customers). For small values of and/or a few terms of the series suffice to computeH(; ). For large values of and values of near 1 the series converges only very slowly. It is shown that in this case the series can be approximated by an integral allowing the characteristic parameters of the system (mean lengthL and varianceV of the queue) to be easily determined. Finally, optimal conditions (0) are derived which maximize the profit earned from running such a system. It turns out that 0 is an increasing function of the ratioA/E (A = cost per potential service operation;E = revenue per actual service operation). At the same time the maximal profitG max (per unit of time) falls off rapidly.

In this paper the -subdifferential and -convexity of real-valued functions on the real line are introduced. By means of the -subdifferential, a new necessary condition for global minima (or maxima) is formulated which many local minima (or maxima) cannot satisfy. The -convexity is used to state sufficient conditions for global minima. The class of -convex functions is relatively large. For example, there are -convex functions which are not continuous anywhere. Nevertheless, a -local minimum of a -convex function is always a global minimum. Furthermore, if a -convex function attains its global minimum, then it does so near the boundary of its domain.This research was supported by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation.  相似文献

We study one-generated factorable foliated formations with directions from the interval [,], where and are the directions of the bicanonical and composition formations, respectively.
