DIRECT MINIMIZATION FOR CALCULATING INVARIANT SUBSPACES IN DENSITY FUNCTIONAL COMPUTATIONS OF THE ELECTRONIC STRUCTURE

In this article, we analyse three related preconditioned steepest descent algorithms, which are partially popular in Hartree-Fock and Kohn-Sham theory as well as invariant subspace computations, from the viewpoint of minimization of the corresponding functionals, constrained by orthogonality conditions. We exploit the geometry of the admissible manifold, i.e., the invariance with respect to unitary transformations, to reformulate the problem on the Grassmann manifold as the admissible set. We then prove asymptotical linear convergence of the algorithms under the condition that the Hessian of the corresponding Lagrangian is elliptic on the tangent space of the Grassmann manifold at the minimizer.     

FAST PARALLELIZABLE METHODS FOR COMPUTING INVARIANT SUBSPACES OF HERMITIAN MATRICES

We propose a quadratically convergent algorithm for computing the invariant subspaces of an Hermitian matrix. Each iteration of the algorithm consists of one matrix-matrix multiplication and one QR decomposition. We present an accurate convergence analysis of the algorithm without using the big O notation. We also propose a general framework based on implicit rational transformations which allows us to make connections with several existing algorithms and to derive classes of extensions to our basic algorithm with faster convergence rates. Several numerical examples are given which compare some aspects of the existing algorithms and the new algorithms.

Let A be a unital C-algebra, n ∈ N ∪ {∞}. It is proved that the isomorphism △n : is isometric for some suitable distances. Asan application, the author has the split exact sequence with iA contractive (and isometric if n = ∞) under certain condition of A.     

INVARIANT FIELDS AND LOCALIZED INVARIANT RINGS OF p-GROUPS

It is well known that for a p-group, the invariant field ispurely transcendental (T. Miyata, Invariants of certain groupsI, Nagoya Math. J. 41 (1971), 69–73). In this note, weshow that a minimal generating set of this field can be chosenas homogeneous invariants from the invariant ring. As a result,we show that the invariant ring localized at one suitable invariantis the localization of a polynomial subring at this same invariant.This second result is a generalization of a recent result ofthe first author for cyclic groups of order p (H. E. A. Campbell,Rings of invariants of representations of C_p in characteristicp, preprint, 2006). As well, we specialize these results tothis latter case.     

IDEAL STRUCTURE IN CENTAIN C^*-TENSOR PRODUCTS

This paper discusses the ideal structure in tensor product $A\bigotimes B$ of C^*-algebra A and B,and introduces the concept of property (I) and property (K) with respect to the problem.When A is an AF(or scattered) C^*-algebra,it is shown that for any C^*-algebra B,the ideals in $A\bigotimes B$ can be expressed by those of A and B.

Let $\[\alpha \]$ be the natural action of $\[SU(n)\]$ on $\[{M_n}(C)\]$ For $\[n \ge 3\]$, if $\[\Phi \]$ is an $\[\alpha \]$-invariant affine isomorphism between $\[{\chi _A}\]$ and $\[{\chi _B}\]$, $\[\Phi (0) = 0\]$, then $A$ and $B$ are $\[^*\]$-isomorphic In this paper a counter example is given for the case $\[n = 2\]$.
