Relaxation limit for hyperbolic systems in chromatography

This paper is concerned with a nonlinear system which arises in chromatography. The global existence of solutions in space for a Cauchy problem with initial data is obtained for any fixed 0$">, and the convergence of to its equilibrium state , governed by a limit system is proved for the case by using the compensated compactness coupled with the framework of Tzavaras (1999).

     

Representation of measures with polynomial denseness in , , and its application to determinate moment problems

It has been proved that algebraic polynomials are dense in the space , , iff the measure is representable as with a finite non-negative Borel measure and an upper semi-continuous function such that is a dense subset of the space    as equipped with the seminorm . The proof is based on de Branges' theorem (1959) on weighted polynomial approximation. A more general question on polynomial denseness in a separable Fréchet space in the sense of Banach has also been examined.

On the symplectic phase space of KdV

We prove that the Birkhoff map for KdV constructed on can be interpolated between and . In particular, the symplectic phase space can be described in terms of Birkhoff coordinates.

     

Symmetry in a free boundary problem for degenerate parabolic equations on unbounded domains

We use the method of Alexandroff-Serrin to establish the spherical symmetry of the ground domain and of the weak solution to a free boundary problem for a class of quasi-linear parabolic equations in an unbounded cylinder , where , with a simply connected bounded domain. The equations considered are of the type , with modeled on . We consider a solution satisfying the boundary conditions: for , and , as . We show that the overdetermined co-normal condition for , with 0$"> for at least one value , forces the spherical symmetry of the ground domain and of the solution.

     

Unprovability of sharp versions of Friedman's sine-principle

For every and every function of one argument, we introduce the statement : ``for all , there is such that for any set of rational numbers, there is of size such that for any two -element subsets and in , we have

The removal of from some undecidable problems involving elementary functions

We show that in the ring generated by the integers and the functions and defined on it is undecidable whether or not a function has a positive value or has a root. We also prove that the existential theory of the exponential field is undecidable.

Let be a polynomial of degree . Assume that the set there is a sequence s.t. and is finite. We prove that the set of generalized critical values of (hence in particular the set of bifurcation points of ) has at most points. Moreover, We also compute the set effectively.

     

Existence and uniqueness theorems for singular anisotropic quasilinear elliptic boundary value problems
