Tunneling effect in one-dimensional organic semiconductors in the presence of an external electric field is studied within the framework of a tight-binding model and a nonadiabatic dynamical method. It is found that under a high electric field, electrons can transit from the valence band (VB) to the conduction band (CB), which is demonstrated to be Zener tunneling in organic semiconductors. The results also indicate a field-induced insulator-metal transition accompanied by the vanishing of the energy gap. It is found that, after the field is turned off, the Peierls phase cannot be recovered.  相似文献

We elucidate in this Letter plasmonic Zener tunneling (PZT) in metal-dielectric waveguide arrays (MDWAs) by using numerical simulations and theoretical analyses. PZT in MDWAs occurs at the waveguide entrance and wherever the beam completes Bloch oscillations, because the bandgap between the first and second bands is minimal at the center of the first Brillouin zone. This feature significantly differs from that of optical Zener tunneling in dielectric waveguide arrays. The dependence of the simulated tunneling rate on the gradient of the relative permittivity of the dielectric layers correlates with the tunneling theory, thus confirming the occurrence of PZT in MDWAs.  相似文献

We study Zener tunneling in two-dimensional photonic lattices and derive, for the case of hexagonal symmetry, the generalized Landau-Zener-Majorana model describing resonant interaction between high-symmetry points of the photonic spectral bands. We demonstrate that this effect can be employed for the generation of Floquet-Bloch modes and verify the model by direct numerical simulations of the tunneling effect.  相似文献

We report on the observation of Zener tunneling of light waves in spectral and time-resolved transmission measurements, performed on an optical superlattice made of porous silicon. The structure was designed to have two photonic minibands, spaced by a narrow frequency gap. A gradient in the refractive index was introduced to create two optical Wannier-Stark ladders and, at a critical value of the optical gradient, tunneling between energy bands was observed in the form of an enhanced transmission peak and a characteristic time dependence of the transmission.  相似文献

We report on the first experimental observation of photonic Bloch oscillations and Zener tunneling in two-dimensional periodic systems. We study the propagation of an optical beam in a square lattice superimposed on a refractive index ramp. We observe oscillations of the beam inside the first Brilloin zone and tunneling of light from the first to the higher-order bands of the lattice band gap spectrum.  相似文献

We have investigated the macroscopic quantum tunneling (MQT) of the phase across a Josephson junction embedded in a superconducting circuit. This system is equivalent to a spin 1/2 particle in a potential energy well. The MQT escape rate of such a particle was recently predicted to be strongly modified when a crossing of its inner Zeeman levels occurs while tunneling. In this regime, we observe a significant enhancement of the MQT rate and compare it to theory.  相似文献

We calculate the current-voltage characteristics of a small capacitance underdamped superconducting tunnel junction and find the value of the critical current which corresponds to switching between coherent voltage oscillations and uncorrelated single electron tunneling. Magnetotransport in a laterally confined two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) can exhibit modified scattering channels owing to a tilted Hall potential. Transitions of electrons between Landau levels with shifted guiding centers can be accomplished through a Zener tunneling mechanism, and make a significant contribution to the magnetoresistance. A remarkable oscillation effect in weak field magnetoresistance has been observed in high-mobility 2DEGs in GaAs -Al Ga 0.3As (0.7) heterostructures, and can be well explained by the Zener mechanism.  相似文献

We demonstrate the existence of Bloch oscillations of acoustic fields in sound propagation through a superlattice of water cavities and layers of methyl methacrylate. To obtain the acoustic equivalent of a Wannier-Stark ladder, we employ a set of cavities with different thicknesses. Bloch oscillations are observed as time-resolved oscillations of transmission in a direct analogy to electronic Bloch oscillations in biased semiconductor superlattices. Moreover, for a particular gradient of cavity thicknesses, an overlap of two acoustic minibands occurs, which results in resonant Zener-like transmission enhancement.  相似文献

We study the effect of Landau--Zener (LZ) tunneling caused by the varying sweeping rate of the external field, and solve the problem about the LZ tunneling rate among many levels. The LZ tunneling rate is essentially changed by the unsteady variation of the time-dependent sweeping field and is different from the steadily varying sweeping field, which makes the particles in lower states transit periodically to upper states within a finite time.  相似文献

We present DC transport measurements of the valence to conduction band (Zener) tunneling current in apindiode with an ultrathin intrinsic layer containing a (GaAs)5/(AlAs)2multi-quantum well structure. According to recent theoretical predictions, the DC current should show maxima as a function of the reverse bias voltage that reflect the formation of Wannier–Stark resonances. So far, Wannier–Stark resonances have only been observed optically and never in a regime of strong Zener tunneling. Experimentally, we find the second derivative of the current-voltage characteristics to show a weak oscillatory structure indeed, indicating the existence of Wannier–Stark resonances in Zener tunneling.  相似文献

Differential resistance r xx in a double GaAs quantum well with two occupied size-quantization subbands has been studied at a temperature of 4.2 K in magnetic fields B < 2 T. The oscillations of r xx with a period in the inverse magnetic field determined by the value of a dc bias current I dc have been discovered in the electron system under investigation at high filling factors in the presence of I dc. The amplitude of magneto-intersubband oscillations has been shown to increase in the r xx oscillation maxima, while the oscillation reversal has been observed in the minima. The discovered oscillations have been shown to be due to Zener tunneling of electrons between Landau levels tilted by a Hall electric field. The experimental data are qualitatively explained by the effect of intersubband transitions on the I dc-dependent component of the electron distribution function.  相似文献

The magnetotransport characteristics of quasi-two-dimensional electronic Corbino disks based on a wide GaAs quantum well with two filled subbands of size quantization are studied. At low temperatures and high magnetic fields, the Corbino disks exhibit the oscillations of differential conductivity, which are periodic with respect to dc electric field E dc. It is shown that the observed oscillations are related to the Zener tunneling induced by E dc. The tunneling occurs between the filled and empty Landau levels under conditions corresponding to the absence of the Hall field.  相似文献

We studied the optical Bloch oscillation and resonant Zener tunneling in macroscopic quasi-period structures of alternatively stratified single negative and dielectric slabs. By a decrease in the thicknesses of the dielectric slabs, the electronic potential of crystals subjected to external dc electric fields is mimicked and the optical Wannier-Stark ladder (WSL) is realized. Both scattering states and the time-resolved transmission of a short pulse are provided to show the existence of the optical analogue of electronic Bloch oscillation. At a critical gradient, the resonant photon Zener tunneling is demonstrated both from the amplitude and the time delay in the transmitted signal of a short pulse.  相似文献

Propagation of light in a rotating optical ring resonator shows striking similarities with magnetic flux induced electron propagation in small metal rings. This correspondence leads us to predict the possibility of Bloch oscillations and Zener tunneling with light in sufficiently high-Q rotating ring resonators.  相似文献

We provide a direct proof of two-electron Andreev transitions in a superconductor-normal-metal tunnel junction by detecting them in a real-time electron counting experiment. Our results are consistent with ballistic Andreev transport with an order of magnitude higher rate than expected for a uniform barrier, suggesting that only part of the interface is effectively contributing to the transport. These findings are quantitatively supported by our direct current measurements in single-electron transistors with similar tunnel barriers.  相似文献

Single hydrogen atoms were imaged on the Cu(001) surface by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). The vibrations of individual H and D atoms against the surface were excited and detected by inelastic electron tunneling spectroscopy (STM-IETS). Variable temperature measurements of H atom diffusion showed a transition from thermally activated diffusion to quantum tunneling at 60 K. Regimes of phonon-assisted and electron-limited quantum tunneling were observed. The thermal diffusion rate of D atoms varied over 7 orders of magnitude between 80 and 50 K with no transition to quantum tunneling down to a thermal hopping rate of 4x10(-7) s(-1).  相似文献
