There is a chance that singleton fields, that in the context of strings and membranes have been regarded as topological gauge fields that can interact only at the boundary of anti-De Sitter space, at spatial infinity, may have a more physical manifestation as constituents of massless fields in spacetime. The composite character of massless fields is expressed by field-current identities that relate ordinary massless field operators to singleton currents and stress-energy tensors. Naive versions of such identities do not make sense, but when the singletons are described in terms of dipole structures, then such constructions are at least formally possible. The new proposal includes and generalizes an early composite version of QED, and includes quantum gravity, super gravity and models of QCD. Unitarity of such theories is conjectural.  相似文献

We show that p-forms on AdS2p+1 describe both singletons and massless particles. On the 2p-dimensional boundary the singleton p-form Lagrangian reduces to the conformally invariant functional F2. All the representations, singletons as well as massless, are zero center modules and involve a vacuum mode. Two- and three-form singleton fields are required by supersymmetry in AdS5 and AdS7 supergravity, respectively.  相似文献

A formulation of composite electrodynamics, with scalar singleton constituents, is here extended to a supersymmetric theory of composite photons and neutrinos, in which the (massless) neutrinos are composed of one each of the scalar and spinorial singletons. These particles interact with an arbitrary scalar matter superfield, with massive, charged components. The feasibility of an interaction that is gauge invariant (in the sense of singleton gauge invariance) arises from the use of unconventional quantization rules which, in turn, are available because singletons are kinematically confined.  相似文献

The observation of neutrino oscillations requires new physics beyond the standard model (SM).A SM-like gauge theory with p lepton families can be extended by introducing q heavy right-handed Majorana neutrinos but preserving its SU(2)L x U(1)y gauge symmetry.The overall neutrino mass matrix M turns out to be a symmetric (p+q) x (p+q) matrix.Given p>q,the rank of M is in general equal to 2q,corresponding to 2q non-zero mass eigenvalues.The existence of (p-q) massless left-handed Majorana neutrinos is an exact consequence of the model,independent of the usual approximation made in deriving the Type-I seesaw relation between the effective p x p light Majorana neutrino mass matrix M,and the q x q heavy Majorana neutrino mass matrix MR.In other words,the numbers of massive left- and right-handed neutrinos are fairly matched.A good example to illustrate this "seesaw fair play rule"is the minimal seesaw model with p = 3 and q = 2,in which one masslese neutrino sits on the unbalanced seesaw.  相似文献

Oscillations of neutrinos propagating in matter do not require that neutrinos are massive, at a fundamental level. Even if neutrinos are massless as a consequence of an exact symmetry - such as total lepton number - they can oscillate into one another if the weak interaction has a small non-universal component, whose existence would signal physics beyond the standard model. The experimental constraints and theoretical plausibility of the mechanism are discussed. Coherent neutrino and antineutrino scattering could substantially affect the late thermal phase neutrino signal from a supernova explosion.  相似文献

Using ambient space we develop a fully gauge and o(d,2)o(d,2)-covariant approach to boundary values of AdSd+1AdSd+1 gauge fields. It is applied to the study of (partially) massless fields in the bulk and (higher-order) conformal scalars, i.e. singletons, as well as (higher-depth) conformal gauge fields on the boundary. In particular, we identify the corresponding generalized Fradkin–Tseytlin equations as obstructions to the extension of the off-shell boundary value to the bulk, generalizing the usual considerations for the holographic anomalies to the partially massless fields. We also relate the background fields for the higher-order singleton to the boundary values of partially massless fields and prove the appropriate generalization of the Flato–Fronsdal theorem, which is in agreement with the known structure of symmetries for the higher-order wave operator. All these facts support the following generalization of the higher-spin holographic duality: the O(N)O(N) model at a multicritical isotropic Lifshitz point should be dual to the theory of partially massless symmetric tensor fields described by the Vasiliev equations based on the higher-order singleton symmetry algebra.  相似文献

Indecomposable representations have been extensively used in the construction of conformal and de Sitter gauge theories. It is thus noteworthy that certain unitary highest weight representations have been given a geometric realization as the unitary quotient of an indecomposable representation using indefinite harmonic forms [RSW]. We apply this construction toSU (2,2) and the de Sitter group. The relation is established between these representations and the massless, positive energy representations ofSU (2,2) obtained in the physics literature. We investigate the extent to which this construction allows twistors to be viewed as a gauge theory ofSU (2,2). For the de Sitter group, on which the gauge theory of singletons is based, we find that this construction is not directly applicable.  相似文献

The existence of a non-zero electric dipole moment (EDM) implies the violation of time reversal symmetry. As the time-reversal symmetry violation predicted by the Standard Model (SM) for the electron EDM is too small to be observed with current experimental techniques and any a non-zero EDM would indicate new physics beyond the SM. The tiny signal from the electron EDM is enhanced in the heavy atoms such as francium (Fr). We are constructing the laser-cooled Fr factory to search for the electron EDM.  相似文献

Conformally invariant systems involving only dimensionless parameters are known to describe particle physics at very high energy. In the presence of an external gravitational field, the conformal symmetry may generalize to the Weyl invariance of classical massless field systems in interaction with gravity. In the quantum theory, the latter symmetry no longer survives: A Weyl anomaly appears. Anomalies are a cornerstone of quantum field theory, and, for the first time, a general, purely algebraic understanding of the universal structure of the Weyl anomalies is obtained, in arbitrary dimensions and independently of any regularization scheme.  相似文献

The ultimate goal of studying isospin physics via heavy-ion reactions with neutron-rich, stable and/or radioactive nuclei is to explore the isospin dependence of in-medium nuclear effective interactions and the equation of state of neutron-rich nuclear matter, particularly the isospin-dependent term in the equation of state, i.e., the density dependence of the symmetry energy. Because of its great importance for understanding many phenomena in both nuclear physics and astrophysics, the study of the density dependence of the nuclear symmetry energy has been the main focus of the intermediate-energy heavy-ion physics community during the last decade, and significant progress has been achieved both experimentally and theoretically. In particular, a number of phenomena or observables have been identified as sensitive probes to the density dependence of nuclear symmetry energy. Experimental studies have confirmed some of these interesting isospin-dependent effects and allowed us to constrain relatively stringently the symmetry energy at sub-saturation densities. The impact of this constrained density dependence of the symmetry energy on the properties of neutron stars have also been studied, and they were found to be very useful for the astrophysical community. With new opportunities provided by the various radioactive beam facilities being constructed around the world, the study of isospin physics is expected to remain one of the forefront research areas in nuclear physics. In this report, we review the major progress achieved during the last decade in isospin physics with heavy ion reactions and discuss future challenges to the most important issues in this field.  相似文献

The relativistic Dirac equation in four-dimensional spacetime reveals a coherent relation between the dimensions of spacetime and the degrees of freedom of fermionic spinors. A massless Dirac fermion generates new symmetries corresponding to chirality spin and charge spin as well as conformal scaling transformations. With the introduction of intrinsic W-parity, a massless Dirac fermion can be treated as a Majorana-type or Weyl-type spinor in a six-dimensional spacetime that reflects the intrinsic quantum numbers of chirality spin. A generalized Dirac equation is obtained in the six-dimensional spacetime with a maximal symmetry. Based on the framework of gravitational quantum field theory proposed in Ref. [1] with the postulate of gauge invariance and coordinate independence, we arrive at a maximally symmetric gravitational gauge field theory for the massless Dirac fermion in six-dimensional spacetime. Such a theory is governed by the local spin gauge symmetry SP(1,5) and the global Poincar′e symmetry P(1,5)= SO(1,5) P~(1,5) as well as the charge spin gauge symmetry SU(2). The theory leads to the prediction of doubly electrically charged bosons. A scalar field and conformal scaling gauge field are introduced to maintain both global and local conformal scaling symmetries. A generalized gravitational Dirac equation for the massless Dirac fermion is derived in the six-dimensional spacetime. The equations of motion for gauge fields are obtained with conserved currents in the presence of gravitational effects. The dynamics of the gauge-type gravifield as a Goldstone-like boson is shown to be governed by a conserved energy-momentum tensor, and its symmetric part provides a generalized Einstein equation of gravity. An alternative geometrical symmetry breaking mechanism for the mass generation of Dirac fermions is demonstrated.  相似文献

Exact integration of the Dirac equation is a classical topic in mathematical physics, which has been researched for several decades. A basic method is complete segregation of the variables. Such separation can be attained in a Dirac equation containing an external electromagnetic field in Minkowski space by means of complete sets of first-order symmetry matrix operators. The purpose of this paper is to solve an analogous case for a free massless Dirac equation. That task has a special feature because external fields are absent and the massless equation is reduced to a D'Alambert equation by squaring. Braneworld models may yield interesting effects ranging from high-energy physics to cosmology, or even some low-energy physics. Their mode structure modifies standard results in these physical realms that can be tested and used, for example, to set bounds on the models parameters. Now, to define braneworld deviations from standard 4D physics, a notion of matter and gravity localization on the brane is crucial. In this work we investigate the localization of universal massive scalar fields in a de Sitter thick tachyonic braneworld generated by gravity coupled to a tachyonic bulk scalar field. This braneworld possesses a 4D de Sitter induced metric and is asymptotically flat despite the presence of a negative bulk cosmological constant, a novel and interesting peculiarity that contrasts with previously known models. It turns out that universal scalar fields can be localized in this expanding braneworld if their bulk mass obeys an upper bound, otherwise the scalar fields delocalize: The dynamics of the scalar field is governed by a Schrödinger equation with an analog quantum mechanical potential of modified Pöschl–Teller type. This potential depends on the bulk curvature of the braneworld system as well as on the value of the bulk scalar field mass. For masses satisfying a certain upper bound, the potential displays a negative minimum and possesses a single massless bound state separated from the Kaluza–Klein (KK) massive modes by a mass gap defined by the Hubble (expansion scale) parameter of the 3-brane. As the bulk scalar field mass increases, the minimum of the quantum mechanical potential approaches a null value and, when the bulk mass reaches certain upper bound, it becomes positive (eventually transforming into a potential barrier), leading to delocalization of the bulk scalar field from the brane. We present analytical expressions for the general solution of the Schrödinger equation. Thus, the KK massive modes are given in terms of general Heun functions as well as the expression for the massless zero mode, giving rise to a new application of these special functions.  相似文献

密度依赖的对称能作为核物质状态方程的同位旋相关部分,是当前核物理和天体物理两个领域共同关注的重要热点问题之一。人们在实验和理论两方面对此进行了大量的探索,然而由于问题的困难性,对其研究尚未达成共识。目前,研究对称能的方法有很多,其中包括微观和唯像核多体理论、重离子碰撞、原子核的巨共振等。近年来,低密对称能的研究已经取得了重要进展。本文综述了利用有限核的信息来约束核物质对称能的密度依赖性方面的研究工作,这一研究途径尽可能地降低了理论分析的模型依赖性。研究表明,208Pb对称能(系数)asym(A)等于参考密度ρA=0.55ρ0处的核物质对称能(系数)。这个关系将有限核与核物质的对称能联系了起来,借此可以探究亚饱和密度核物质对称能的密度依赖性,因此核心目标是准确确定208Pb对称能(系数)。我们通过重核β-衰变能和质量差来提取208Pb对称能(系数),进而约束亚饱和密度下核物质对称能的密度依赖行为。  相似文献

Potential near- and long-term physics opportunities with jets, heavy flavors and electromagnetic probes at RHIC are presented. Much new physics remains to be unveiled using these probes, due to their sensitivity to the initial high density stage of RHIC collisions, when quark-gluon plasma (QGP) formation is expected. Additional physics will include addressing deconfinement, chiral symmetry restoration, properties of the strongly-coupled QGP and a possible weakly-interacting QGP, color glass condensate in the initial state, and hadronization. A new derivation of the Wigner-Kirkwood expansion for N-fermion systems is presented, showing explicitly the connection to the WKB approximation for a single level. This allows us to study separately the two ansatzes required to obtain the semiclassical expansions: the asymptotic expansions in powers of and the smoothing of quantal effects. We discuss the one dimensional and three dimensional, with spherical symmetry, cases. Applications for standard potentials used in nuclear physics are described in detail.  相似文献

A new algebra, combining supersymmetry and internal symmetry, is presented. A massless vector hypermultiplet contains a vector, an isodoublet of left-handed Dirac spinors, and a complex scalar. These can be used as generalized gauge fields. Abelian as well as non-Abelian gauge theories are studied, and the Higgs mechanism is extended in a hypersymmetric way. We present, also, a (mom-realistic) SU(2)× U(1) model; gauge invariance and hypersymmetry are spontaneously broken; two Goldstone spinors appear. Hypersymmetry allows one to define “electronic” and “muonic” numbers, and suggests that a weakly interacting scalar particle ωγ is associated with the photon and the two neutrinos.  相似文献

At high adaptive correction, the randomly shifting speckles familiar in conventional astronomical imaging become organized into patterns with distinct regularities that may permit partial suppression of the image noise they produce. Mathematically, the phase exponential in the Fourier-optical imaging expression may be expanded in a Taylor series in remnant phase phi, which is small at very high correction, leading to a perturbed point-spread function (PSF) that is a sum of algebraic terms, each of distinct spatial symmetry. At sufficiently high correction, one need deal with only a few of the lowest-order terms. A first-order expansion gives an ideal PSF plus two terms, linear and quadratic, describing the two brightest, physically most relevant kinds of speckle. A second-order expansion gives three new terms, the brightest of which is primarily a static correction to the PSF, with a much smaller true speckle component. When the correction is great enough to isolate individual speckle terms, the two terms from the first-order expansion alone determine the essential physics. A general observational strategy is outlined for reducing speckle noise in highly corrected companion searches, dominated by a few speckle terms of definite spatial symmetry.  相似文献

A detailed analysis by 1/n expansion is presented of supersymmetric nonlinear sigma models in two dimensions withU(n) symmetry in which the scalar fields are constrained on a non-compact manifold. The theories are ultraviolet finite. In the massless version of the models no mass scale is generated and gauge bosons fail to get dynamics while this is possible provided the theory contains a mass scale. The effects of introduction of the “Ø-term” into supersymmetric theories are also discussed. In particular, it is argued that supersymmetry is broken by the Ø-term only in finite supersymmetric theories. Finally, a singular behavior in the massless limit in these models is pointed out.  相似文献
