A series of graft (co)polymers were synthesized by nucleophilic substitution reaction between iodinated 1,2‐polybutadiene (PB‐I, backbone) and living polymer lithium (side chains). The coupling reaction between PB‐I and living polymers can finish within minutes at room temperature, and high conversion (up to 92%) could be obtained by effectively avoiding side reaction of dimerization when living polymers were capped with 1,1‐diphenylethylene. By virtue of living anionic polymerization, backbone length, side chain length, and side chain composition, as well as graft density, were well controlled. Tunable molecular weight of graft (co)polymers with narrow molecular weight distribution can be obtained by changing either the lengths of side chain and backbone, or the graft density. Graft copolymers could also be synthesized with side chains of multicomponent polymers, such as block polymer (polystyrene‐b‐polybutadiene) and even mixed polymers (polystyrene and polybutadiene) as hetero chains. Thus, based on living anionic polymerization, this work provides a facile way for modular synthesis of graft (co)polymers via nucleophilic substitution reaction between living polymers and polyhalohydrocarbon (PB‐I). © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Well‐defined poly(vinyl acetate) macroinitiators, with the chains thus end‐capped by a cobalt complex, were synthesized by cobalt‐mediated radical polymerization and used to initiate styrene polymerization at 30 °C. Although the polymerization of the second block was not controlled, poly(vinyl acetate)‐b‐polystyrene copolymers were successfully prepared and converted into amphiphilic poly(vinyl alcohol)‐b‐polystyrene copolymers by the methanolysis of the ester functions of the poly(vinyl acetate) block. These poly(vinyl alcohol)‐b‐polystyrene copolymers self‐associated in water with the formation of nanocups, at least when the poly(vinyl alcohol) content was low enough. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of novel polyisocyanide‐graft‐polystyrenes and polyisocyanide‐graft‐[polystyrene‐block‐poly(butyl acrylate)]s were synthesized through the grafting‐through and grafting‐from routes with two types of living polymerization techniques: polymerization with the Pd–Pt μ‐ethynediyl dinuclear complex as the initiator and catalyst for the polyisocyanide backbone and atom transfer radical polymerization for the grafted side chain. Through the introduction of a chiral center at the side chain of the polyisocyanide backbone, helical grafted and graft block polyisocyanides were prepared through the grafting‐from method. All of the obtained polymers exhibited polydispersities in the range of 1.07–1.41. This might have been the first time grafted polyisocyanides were prepared, especially helical grafted polyisocyanides, through the operation of two living polymerization techniques. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Graft copolymers consisting of polyamide 12 or poly(ethylene-co-vinyl alcohol) as backbone polymers and side chains of poly(ethylene oxide) have been synthesized. The amide and hydroxyl groups of the backbone polymers were used as initiation sites for the polymerization of ethylene oxide (EO). Potassium tert-butoxide was used for ionization of the active groups, and the polymerization of EO was carried out in dimethyl sulfoxide. The graft copolymers were characterized with respect to molecular weight and composition using elemental analysis, 1H-NMR, gel permeation chromatography, and FTIR. The size of the side chains varied between 300 and 1000 g/mol. Thermal properties were examined by DSC. The graft copolymers showed increasing crystallinity and increasing melt temperature with increasing molecular weight of the side chains. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. A versatile strategy for the preparation of end‐functional polymers and block copolymers by radical exchange reactions is described. For this purpose, first polystyrene with 2,2,6,6‐tetramethylpiperidine‐1‐oxyl end group (PS‐TEMPO) is prepared by nitroxide‐mediated radical polymerization (NMRP). In the subsequent step, these polymers are heated to 130 °C in the presence of independently prepared TEMPO derivatives bearing hydroxyl, azide and carboxylic acid functionalities, and polymers such as poly(ethylene glycol) (TEMPO‐PEG) and poly(ε‐caprolactone) (TEMPO‐PCL). Due to the simultaneous radical generation and reversible termination of the polymer radical, TEMPO moiety on polystyrene is replaced to form the corresponding end‐functional polymers and block copolymers. The intermediates and final polymers are characterized by 1H NMR, UV, IR, and GPC measurements. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. Chem. 2019 , 57, 2387–2395  相似文献

The effect of the presence of different amounts of block copolymers [polystyrene-block-poly(methyl methacrylate)] on the morphology of polystyrene/poly (methyl methacrylate) composite latex particles was investigated. The block copolymers were produced in situ by controlled radical polymerization (CRP) through the addition of the second monomer to a seed prepared by miniemulsion polymerization with a certain amount of a CRP agent. With an increase in the amounts of the block copolymers, the particle morphology changed from a hemisphere morphology (for a latex without block copolymers, i.e., without the use of a CRP agent during the polymerization) to clear core–shell morphologies as a result of decreasing polymer–polymer interfacial tension © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Well defined graft copolymers are prepared by “grafting from” atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) at room temperature (30 °C). The experiments were aimed at grafting methacrylates and styrene at latent initiating sites of polystyrene. For this purpose, the benzylic hydrogen in polystyrene was subjected to allylic bromination with N‐bromosuccinimide and azobisisobutrylnitirle to generate tertiary bromide ATRP initiating sites (Br? C? PS). The use of Br? C? PS with lesser mol % of bromide initiating groups results in better control and successful graft copolymerization. This was used to synthesize a series of new graft copolymers such as PS‐g‐PBnMA, PS‐g‐PBMA, PS‐g‐GMA, and PS‐g‐(PMMA‐b‐PtBA) catalyzed by CuBr/PMDETA system, in bulk, at room temperature. The polymers are characterized by GPC, NMR, FTIR, TEM, and TGA. Graft copolymerization followed by block polymerization enabled the synthesis of highly branched polymer brush, in which the grafting density can be adjusted by appropriate choice of bromide concentration in the polystyrene. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The present report describes the synthesis of a densely grafted copolymer consisting of a rigid main chain and flexible side chains by the atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of methyl methacrylate (MMA) from an ATRP initiator‐bearing poly(phenylacetylene) [poly(BrPA)]. Poly(BrPA) was obtained by the polymerization of 4‐ethynylbenzyl‐2‐bromoisobutyrate using [Rh(NBD)Cl]2 in the presence of Et3N. The 1H NMR spectrum showed that poly(BrPA) was in the cis‐transoid form. Upon heating at 30 °C for 24 h the cis‐transoid form was maintained. ATRP of MMA from the poly(BrPA) was carried out at 30 °C using CuX (X = Br, Cl) as the catalyst and N,N,N′,N′,N′‐pentamethyldiethylenetriamine as the ligand, and the resulting graft copolymers were investigated with 1H NMR and SEC. To analyze the graft structure in more detail, the graft copolymers were hydrolyzed with KOH and the resultant poly(MMA) part was investigated with 1H NMR and SEC. The polydispersity indexes of 1.25–1.45 indicated that the graft copolymers have well‐controlled side chains. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A facile synthetic approach of conjugated rod‐coil block copolymers with poly(para‐phenylene) as the rod block and polystyrene or polyethylene glycol as the coil block was developed. The block copolymers were synthesized through a TEMPO‐mediated radical polymerization of 3,5‐cyclohexadiene‐1,2‐diol‐derived monomers (diacetate, dibenzonate, and dicarbonate), followed by thermal aromatization of the polymer precursor. The living character of the polymerization and the structure of the copolymers were studied by NMR, GPC, TGA, and UV–vis spectroscopy. The average conjugation lengths of the copolymers were calculated according to their maxima in UV–vis spectroscopy. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of ferrocene‐based well‐defined amphiphilic graft copolymers, consisting of hydrophilic poly[poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether acrylate] (PPEGMEA) backbone and hydrophobic poly(2‐acryloyloxyethyl ferrocenecarboxylate) (PAEFC) side chains were synthesized by successive single‐electron‐transfer living radical polymerization (SET‐LRP) and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). The backbone was prepared by SET‐LRP of PEGMEA macromonomer, and it was then treated with lithium di‐isopropylamide and 2‐bromopropionyl bromide at ?78 °C to give PPEGMEA‐Br macroinitiator. The targeted well‐defined graft copolymers with narrow molecular weight distributions (Mw/Mn ≤ 1.32) were synthesized via ATRP of AEFC initiated by PPEGMEA‐Br macroinitiator, and the molecular weights of the backbone and side chains were both controllable. The electro‐chemical behaviors of graft copolymers were studied by cyclic voltammetry, and it was found that graft copolymers were more difficult to be oxidized, and the reversibility of electrode process became less with raising the content of PAEFC segment. The effects of the preparation method, the length of hydrophobic PAEFC segment, and the initial water content on self‐assembly behavior of PPEGMEA‐g‐PAEFC graft copolymers in aqueous media were investigated by transmission electron microscopy. The morphologies of micelles could transform from cylinders to spheres or rods with changing the preparation condition and the length of side chains. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A polyimide‐graft‐polystyrene (PI‐g‐PS) copolymer with a polyimide backbone and polystyrene side chains was synthesized by the “grafting from” method using styrene polymerization on a polyimide multicenter macroinitiator via ATRP mechanism. The side chain grafting density z = 0.86 of PI‐g‐PS is rather high for graft‐copolymers synthesized by the ATRP method. Molecular characteristics and solution behavior of PI‐g‐PS were studied in selective solvents using light scattering and viscometry methods. In all solvents, the backbone tends to avoid contact with a poor solvent. To describe the conformation and hydrodynamic properties of PI‐g‐PS macromolecules in thermodynamically good solvents for side chains and PI‐g‐PS, the wormlike spherocylinder model is used. Macromolecules of the studied graft‐copolymer are characterized by high equilibrium rigidities (Kuhn segment length >20 nm). In Θ‐conditions, PI‐g‐PS macromolecules may be modeled by a rigid prolate ellipsoid of revolution with a low asymmetry form and a collapsed backbone as the ellipsoid core. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Tetrakis bromomethyl benzene was used as a tetrafunctional initiator in the synthesis of four‐armed star polymers of methyl methacrylate via atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) with a CuBr/2,2 bipyridine catalytic system and benzene as a solvent. Relatively low polydispersities were achieved, and the experimental molecular weights were in agreement with the theoretical ones. A combination of 2,2,6,6‐tetramethyl piperidine‐N‐oxyl‐mediated free‐radical polymerization and ATRP was used to synthesize various graft copolymers with polystyrene backbones and poly(t‐butyl methacrylate) grafts. In this case, the backbone was produced with a 2,2,6,6‐tetramethyl piperidine‐N‐oxyl‐mediated stable free‐radical polymerization process from the copolymerization of styrene and p‐(chloromethyl) styrene. This polychloromethylated polymer was used as an ATRP multifunctional initiator for t‐butyl methacrylate polymerization, giving the desired graft copolymers. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. A series of well‐defined double‐hydrophilic graft copolymers, consisting of poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide)‐b‐poly(ethyl acrylate) (PNIPAM‐b‐PEA) backbone and poly(2‐(dimethylamino)ethyl acrylate) (PDMAEA) side chains, were synthesized by the combination of single‐electron‐transfer living radical polymerization (SET‐LRP) and atom‐transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). PNIPAM‐b‐PEA backbone was first prepared by sequential SET‐LRP of N‐isopropylacrylamide and 2‐hydroxyethyl acrylate at 25 °C using CuCl/tris(2‐(dimethylamino)ethyl)amine as catalytic system followed by the transformation into the macroinitiator by treating the pendant hydroxyls with 2‐chloropropionyl chloride. The final graft copolymers with narrow molecular weight distributions were synthesized by ATRP of 2‐(dimethylamino)ethyl acrylate initiated by the macroinitiator at 40 °C using CuCl/tris(2‐(dimethylamino)ethyl)amine as catalytic system via the grafting‐from strategy. These copolymers were employed to prepare stable colloidal gold nanoparticles with controlled size in aqueous solution without any external reducing agent. The morphology and size of the nanoparticles were affected by the length of PDMAEA side chains, pH value, and the feed ratio of the graft copolymer to HAuCl4. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The radical copolymerization of cyclic ester β‐propiolactone (β‐PL) with styrene (St) at 120 °C, with a complete range of monomer ratios, is a rare example of a system providing graft copolymers (PSt‐g‐β‐PL) in one pot. The structure of the resulting β‐PL–St copolymers was proven by using a combination of different characterization techniques, such as 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopy and gel permeation chromatography (GPC), before and after alkaline hydrolysis of the polymers. The number of grafting points increased with an increasing amount of β‐PL in the feed. A significant difference in the reactivity of St and β‐PL and radical chain‐transfer reactions at the polystyrene (PSt) backbone, followed by combination with the active growing poly(β‐PL) chains, led to the formation of graft copolymers by a grafting‐onto mechanism.  相似文献

Well‐defined sulfonated polystyrene and block copolymers with n‐butyl acrylate (nBA) were synthesized by CuBr catalyzed living radical polymerization. Neopentyl p‐styrene sulfonate (NSS) was polymerized with ethyl‐2‐bromopropionate initiator and CuBr catalyst with N,N,N′,N′‐pentamethylethyleneamine to give poly(NSS) (PNSS) with a narrow molecular weight distribution (MWD < 1.12). PNSS was then acidified by thermolysis resulting in a polystyrene backbone with 100% sulfonic acid groups. Random copolymers of NSS and styrene with various composition ratios were also synthesized by copolymerization of NSS and styrene with different feed ratios (MWD < 1.11). Well defined block copolymers with nBA were synthesized by sequential polymerization of NSS from a poly(n‐butyl acrylate) (PnBA) precursor using CuBr catalyzed living radical polymerization (MWD < 1.29). © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A combination of nitroxide‐mediated radical polymerization and living anionic polymerization was used to synthesize a series of well‐defined graft (co)polymers with “V‐shaped” and “Y‐shaped” branches. The polymer main chain is a copolymer of styrene and p‐chloromethylstyrene (PS‐co‐PCMS) prepared via nitroxide‐mediated radical polymerization. The V‐shaped branches were prepared through coupling reaction of polystyrene macromonomer, carrying 1,1‐diphenylethylene terminus, with polystyryllithium or polyisoprenyllithium. The Y‐shaped branches were prepared throughfurther polymerization initiated by the V‐shaped anions. The obtained branches, carrying a living anion at the middle (V‐shaped) or at the end of the third segment (Y‐shaped), were coupled in situ with pendent benzyl chloride of PS‐co‐PCMS to form the target graft (co)polymers. The purified graft (co)polymers were analyzed by size exclusion chromatography equipped with a multiangle light scattering detector and a viscometer. The result shows that the viscosities and radii of gyration of the branched polymers are remarkably smaller than those of linear polystyrene. In addition, V‐shaped product adopts a more compact conformation in dilute solution than the Y‐shaped analogy. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This article reports the synthesis of the block and graft copolymers using peroxygen‐containing poly(methyl methacrylate) (poly‐MMA) as a macroinitiator that was prepared from the atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of methyl methacrylate (MMA) in the presence of bis(4,4′‐bromomethyl benzoyl peroxide) (BBP). The effects of reaction temperatures on the ATRP system were studied in detail. Kinetic studies were carried out to investigate controlled ATRP for BBP/CuBr/bpy initiating system with MMA at 40 °C and free radical polymerization of styrene (S) at 80 °C. The plots of ln ([Mo]/[Mt]) versus reaction time are linear, corresponding to first‐order kinetics. Poly‐MMA initiators were used in the bulk polymerization of S to obtain poly (MMA‐b‐S) block copolymers. Poly‐MMA initiators containing undecomposed peroygen groups were used for the graft copolymerization of polybutadiene (PBd) and natural rubber (RSS‐3) to obtain crosslinked poly (MMA‐g‐PBd) and poly(MMA‐g‐RSS‐3) graft copolymers. Swelling ratio values (qv) of the graft copolymers in CHCl3 were calculated. The characterizations of the polymers were achieved by Fourier‐transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), 1H‐nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR), gel‐permeation chromatography (GPC), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and the fractional precipitation (γ) techniques. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of copolymers composed of methoxy poly(ethylene glycol) and a hydrophobic block of poly(ɛ-caprolactone-co-propargyl carbonate) grafted with poly(2-[dimethylamino]ethyl methacrylate) was synthesized by combining ring opening polymerization, azide-alkyne click reaction, and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). Well-defined copolymers with a target composition and a tailored structure were achieved via the grafting from approach by using a single catalytic system for both click reaction and ATRP. Kinetic studies demonstrated the controlled/living character of the employed polymerization methods. The thermal properties and self-assembly in aqueous medium of the graft copolymers were dependent on their composition. The resulting polymeric materials showed low cytotoxicity toward L929 cells, demonstrating their potential for biomedical applications. This type of materials containing cationic side chains tethered to biocompatible and biodegradable segments could be the basis for promising candidates as drug and gene delivery systems.  相似文献

A series of well‐defined centipede‐like copolymers with poly(glycidyl methacrylate) (PGMA) as main chain and poly(L ‐lactide) (PLLA) and polystyrene (PSt) as side chains have been synthesized successfully by combination of ring‐opening polymerization and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). The synthetic process includes three steps. (1) Synthesis of PGMA via ATRP; (2) preparation of macroinitiator with one bromine group and a hydroxyl group at every GMA unit of PGMA; (3) ring‐opening polymerization of LLA and ATRP of St to obtain the asymmetric centipede‐like copolymers. The number–average degrees of polymerization of PGMA backbone, PLLA and PSt side chains were determined by 1H‐NMR spectra, and the molecular weights of the resultant intermediates and centipede‐like copolymers were measured by gel permeation chromatography. The molecular weight distributions were narrow and the molecular weights of both the backbone and the side chains were controllable. The thermal behavior of the centipede‐like copolymers was investigated by differential scanning calorimeter. With the increase of PSt side chain length, the glass transition temperature of PLLA side chains shifted to high temperature, and crystallization ability of PLLA side chains became poor. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
