On a Topological Property of certain Calkin Algebras   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Let X = 1p, 1 p < , or X = c0, B(X) be the algebra of allbounded linear operators on X, H(X) be the ideal of compactoperators in B(X), and C(X) = B(X)/H(X) be the Calkin algebraon X. For TB(X), let ||T||c = dist(T, H(X)) be the essentialnorm of T that is the norm of T+H(X) in C(X). It is shown thatfor any operator TB(X) and any number 0 < t < 1, thereexists a closed infinite dimensional subspace Z Z X such that ||Tx|| t||T||c, for all x Z. As a consequence, it is shown that every (not necessarily complete)submultiplicative norm on the Calkin algebra C(X) is equivalentto the quotient norm || ||c on C(X).  相似文献

Let A be a biprojective Banach algebra, and let A-mod-A be the category of Banach A-bimodules. In this paper, for every given -mod-A, we compute all the cohomology groups . Furthermore, we give some cohomological characterizations of biprojective Banach algebras. In particular, we show that the following properties of a Banach algebra A are equivalent to its biprojectivity: (i) for all -mod -A; (ii) for all -mod-A; (iii) for all -mod-A. (Here and are, respectively, the Banach A-bimodules of left, right and double multipliers of X.) Further, if A is a biflat Banach algebra and -mod-A, we compute all the cohomology groups , where is the Banach A-bimodule dual to X. Also, we give cohomological characterizations of biflat Banach algebras. We prove that a Banach algebra A is biflat if and only if any of the following conditions is valid: (i’) for all -mod-A; (ii’) for all -mod-A; (iii’) for all -mod-A. Received 16 June 1998  相似文献

We define two canonical cohomology theories for Hopf C*-algebrasand for Hopf von Neumann algebras (with coefficients in theircomodules). We then study the situations when these cohomologiesvanish. The cases of locally compact groups and compact quantumgroups are considered in more detail. Let A be a C*-algebra. For a A let D(a, A) denote the innerderivation induced by a, regarded as a bounded operator on A,and let d(a, Z(A)) denote the distance of a from Z(A), the centreof A. Let K(A) be the smallest number in [0, ] such that d(a,Z(A)) K(A)||D(a, A)|| for all a A. It is shown that if A isnon-commutative and has an identity then either K(A) = , or K(A) = 1 / 3, or K(A) 1. Necessaryand sufficient conditions for these three possibilities aregiven in terms of the primitive and primal ideals of A. If Ais a quotient of an AW*-algebra then K(A) . Helly's Theorem is used to show that if A is aweakly central C*-algebra then K(A) 1.  相似文献

We study the relation between the cohomology of general linear and symmetric groups and their respective quantizations, using Schur algebras and standard homological techniques to build appropriate spectral sequences. As our methods fit inside a much more general context within the theory of finite-dimensional algebras, we develop our results first in that general setting, and then specialize to the above situations. From this we obtain new proofs of several known results in modular representation theory of symmetric groups. Moreover, we reduce certain questions about computing extensions for symmetric groups and Hecke algebras to questions about extensions for general linear groups and their quantizations.  相似文献

A problem that has been open for a long time is whether an automorphism of the center of the integral group ring of a finite group permutes the class sums. As a generalization, the similar problem for integral table algebras has also been studied in a few papers. In this paper we further the investigation of the problem for integral C-algebras and table algebras. We will first present some necessary and sufficient conditions under which an algebra isomorphism between integral C-algebras is monomial, and as an application, obtain a conceptual proof of the class sum correspondence theorem of group rings of finite groups. Then we prove that an algebra isomorphism compatible with degree maps between standard integral nilpotent table algebras over the ring of algebraic integers is exact. As a direct consequence, we get Hertweck's result [6 Hertweck , M. ( 2008 ). On isomorphisms between centers of integral group rings of finite groups . Proc. Amer. Math. Soc. 136 : 15391547 .[Crossref], [Web of Science ®] [Google Scholar]] for finite nilpotent groups. An application to association schemes is also presented.  相似文献

Characterizations and Applications of Prequasi-Invex Functions   总被引:22,自引:0,他引:22
In this paper, two new types of generalized convex functions are introduced. They are called strictly prequasi-invex functions and semistrictly prequasi-invex functions. Note that prequasi-invexity does not imply semistrict prequasi-invexity. The characterization of prequasi-invex functions is established under the condition of lower semicontinuity, upper semicontinuity, and semistrict prequasi-invexity, respectively. Furthermore, the characterization of semistrictly prequasi-invex functions is also obtained under the condition of prequasi-invexity and lower semicontinuity, respectively. A similar result is also obtained for strictly prequasi-invex functions. It is worth noting that these characterizations reveal various interesting relationships among prequasi-invex, semistrictly prequasi-invex, and strictly prequasi-invex functions. Finally, prequasi-invex, semistrictly prequasi-invex, and strictly prequasi-invex functions are used in the study of optimization problems.  相似文献

We exhibit a vertex operator that implements the multiplication by power sums of Jucys–Murphy elements in the centers of the group algebras of all symmetric groups simultaneously. The coefficients of this operator generate a representation of , to which operators multiplying by normalized conjugacy classes are also shown to belong. A new derivation of such operators based on matrix integrals is proposed, and our vertex operator is used to give an alternative approach to the polynomial functions on Young diagrams introduced by Kerov and Olshanski. For the homeomorphism C*-algebra A(Σ) arising from a topological dynamical system Σ=(X,σ) where σ is a homeomorphism on an arbitrary compact Hausdorff space X, we first give detailed classification of its closed ideals into four classes. In case when X is a compact metric space, we then determine the conditions when the quotient algebras of A(Σ) become quasidiagonal. The case of A(Σ) itself was treated by M. Pimsner.  相似文献

We give a simple combinatorial proof of Ram's rule for computing the characters of the Hecke Algebra. We also establish a relationship between the characters of the Hecke algebra and the Kronecker product of two irreducible representations of the Symmetric Group which allows us to give new combinatorial interpretations to the Kronecker product of two Schur functions evaluated at a Schur function of hook shape or a two row shape. We also give a formula for the regular representation of the Hecke algebra.  相似文献

We prove that all irreducible representations of the bismash product have Frobenius–Schur indicator +1, where k is an algebraically closed field of characteristic 0. If n = p, a prime, we find all indicators for . We also study more general bismash products. Both authors were supported by NSF grants DMS-07-01291 and DMS-04-01399.  相似文献
