Third-harmonic generation (THG) in reflection geometry was studied in nanostructured silicon layers grown by electrochemical porosifying of p-type (110) silicon substrates. An order of magnitude enhancement of the THG efficiency compared to crystalline silicon (c-Si) was observed for the samples prepared on a highly doped substrate, whereas for the samples grown on a low-doped substrate the THG was much less efficient than for c-Si. The finding is discussed in terms of fluctuations of the electric field of the pump-laser irradiation in the layers of anisotropically distributed silicon nanocrystals. Analytical expressions of the spectral functions have been derived for a number of induced excitations that occur near the difference-frequency generation in a four-level atomic system interacting with three laser fields. The spectral heights and subnatural line widths of the induced peaks depend on the intensities of the laser fields involved. The maximum heights of the induced peaks take positive, zero and negative values, indicating that the processes of absorption (attenuation), dark resonance and stimulated emission (amplification) are likely to occur near the difference-frequency generation, respectively. We present a 7-TW Ti:sapphire laser system operating at 50 Hz for laser Compton femtosecond X-ray generation. This laser system delivers 8.4 W of average output power at a repetition rate of 50 Hz with a pulse width of 24 fs. It demonstrates successful management using a dynamically stable resonator in the regenerative amplifier and compensation for thermal lensing by a convex mirror in a ring-type four-pass power amplifier. We also present the results of closed-loop corrections for distorted wavefronts of amplified and compressed laser pulses, using an adaptive optical system consisting of a Shack–Hartmann-type wavefront sensor and a deformable mirror. This closed-loop correction results in dramatic improvements, reducing wavefront distortions below 0.05 λ rms. We describe a 7.4-μm source based on difference frequency generation with 6.5 mW of 1278-nm radiation from an extended cavity laser and 66 mW of 1544-nm radiation from another extended cavity laser, amplified in an erbium-doped fibre amplifier. Optimum focusing of the input beams in the 5×5×10-mm3 AgGaSe2 crystal, and the spatial and temporal characteristics of the output beam, are determined. The source is used for accurate determination of line parameters for selected lines of the ν3 band of SO2, centred at 1361 cm-1. Subsequently, these lines are used for performing quantitative analysis of gas mixtures containing SO2 at concentration levels down to 4 ppm without relying on any calibration with certified gas mixtures. This demonstrates the potential of infrared spectroscopy as a primary method for low-concentration gas analysis. We demonstrate intracavity frequency doubling of a standard femtosecond Ti:sapphire oscillator. The cavity is extended with a pair of focusing mirrors and a 0.5-mm-thick BBO crystal. We achieve a repetition rate of 50 MHz and simultaneously generate 22 mW of 55-fs pulses at 810 nm and 200 mW of 73-fs pulses at 405 nm, which corresponds to 4 nJ per pulse. We create a total of 330-mW, 405-nm light when pumping the Ti:sapphire crystal with 5.7 W from an Ar-ion laser, corresponding to a conversion efficiency of 5.7%. No saturation is found, which implies that higher outputs can be achieved with higher pump rates. Preliminary results from the use of blue pulses as pump in an optical parametric amplifier seeded by pulses from a photonic crystal fiber are presented. We present the application of a novel micro mirror array, which is based on a micro electro mechanical system (MEMS), as one- and two-dimensional phase-modulating spatial light modulator (SLM) for femtosecond pulse shaping in the spectral region from the deep-ultraviolet (DUV) to the near-infrared (NIR) (200–900 nm). Using such a high-resolution MEMS-SLM, we demonstrate one-dimensional pulse shaping at 400 nm, including THz-pulse train generation, chirp compensation, and phase wraps. The far-field intensity distribution of the third harmonic generated in a thin silica plate by two laser beams crossed at a small angle comprises four peaks approximately symmetric with respect to the bisector. The measurement of the intensity ratio of the inner to the outer peaks yielded values scattered from 10 to 20, surprisingly larger than the combinatorial value 9. The phase-matching factor, as determined by the full three-dimensional calculations required by the absence of axial symmetry, accounts for the observed ratio and its fluctuations. This article addresses the development of a Chemical Oxygen-Iodine Laser (COIL) with alternative chemical ways of generating atomic iodine. Injection of atomic iodine as opposed to molecular iodine has the potential to improve the COIL efficiency. This paper describes two chemical methods for generating iodine atoms based on the gas phase reactions of hydrogen/deuterium iodide with fluorine or chlorine atoms, which are also produced chemically. Simplified one-dimensional gas dynamic modeling that describes the stream-wise profiles of species concentrations within both reaction systems is used to gain a theoretical understanding of both reaction systems under COIL conditions. The modeling results are used for the design of an experimental device and the interpretation of experimental data. The first experimental investigation studies the production of iodine atoms produced from reactions of Cl with HI. Atomic iodine yields of 70–100% in nitrogen are obtained, and the gain on the I(2 P 1/2)–I(2 P 3/2) transition in a flow of singlet oxygen is measured. The generation of programmable complex femtosecond pulses in the mid infrared (3–10 μm) with high precision is reported. Designed pulse shapes in the near infrared (1–1.6 μm) are transferred to the mid infrared via difference-frequency mixing with a second infrared pulse spectrally narrowed in a zero-dispersion compressor. In particular, pulse sequences with variable relative phases have been obtained. The control of the pulse properties is achieved purely electronically, allowing for implementation into a feedback loop. A novel spectral broadening technique, based on hollow-fiber cascading, is reported, which allows the generation of a supercontinuum extending to a bandwidth exceeding 510 THz with excellent spatial beam quality. High-peak-power, sub-7-fs light pulses tunable from the visible to the near infrared have been generated by compression of portions of the supercontinuum, employing different sets of chirped mirrors. The laser-induced line-narrowing effect, discovered more than thirty years ago, can also be applied to recent studies in high resolution spectroscopy based on electromagnetically induced transparency. In this paper we first present a general form of the transmission width of electromagnetically induced transparency in a homogeneously broadened medium. We then analyze a Doppler broadened medium by using a lorentzian function as the atomic velocity distribution. The dependence of the transmission linewidth on the driving field intensity is discussed and compared to the laser-induced line-narrowing effect. This dependence can be characterized by a parameter which can be regarded as “the degree of optical pumping.” Received: 17 December 2001 / Published online: 15 January 2003 RID="*" ID="*"Corresponding author. We investigate the coherent population trapping effect occurring between the Zeeman sublevels of a given hyperfine state of Cs when excited by a single-mode diode laser, which is frequency modulated in the kHz–MHz range. In the presence of a dc magnetic field, simultaneous excitation of pairs of ground-state magnetic sublevels to common excited magnetic sublevels is performed. As a result, coherent population trapping resonance is detected at only a given modulation frequency, whose value gives a measure of the magnetic field. The parameters of the resonances are measured in order to determine the ultimate accuracy of the magnetic field measurement. Phase-manipulated ultrafast laser pulses and temporally tailored pulse trains with THz repetition rates are promising new tools for quality micromachining of brittle dielectrics, allowing to adapt the laser energy delivery rate to the material properties for optimal processing. Different materials respond with specific reaction pathways to the sudden energy input depending on the efficiency of electron generation and on the ability to release the energy into the lattice. The sequential energy delivery with judiciously chosen pulse trains may induce softening of the material during the initial steps of excitation and change the energy coupling for the subsequent steps. We show that this can result in lower stress, cleaner structures, and allow for a material-dependent optimization process. The competition between femtosecond laser pulse induced optical breakdown and femtosecond laser pulse filamentation in condensed matter is studied both experimentally and numerically using water as an example. The coexistence of filamentation and breakdown is observed under tight focusing conditions. The development of the filamentation process from the creation of a single filament to the formation of many filaments at higher pulse energy is characterized systematically. In addition, strong deflection and modulation of the supercontinuum is observed. They manifest themselves at the beginning of the filamentation process, near the highly disordered plasma created by optical breakdown at the geometrical focus. We report stable self-starting near-transform-limited 26-fs pulses at 250-mW output power from a Kerr-lens mode-locked (KLM) Cr4+:YAG laser using chirped mirrors in combination with prisms. The highest output power achieved in KLM regime was 600 mW at 55-fs pulse duration. The experimental results agree well with the results of theoretical analysis with respect to KLM self-starting ability and stability against continuous-wave and multi-pulse operation. Parameter ranges for stable transform-limited KLM pulses as well as the shortest achievable pulse durations are established. Using an InGaAs-InP semiconductor saturable absorber mirror we could obtain self-starting 57-fs pulses at the average output power of 200 mW. Two-photon absorption was found to be the main mechanism favoring the multiple-pulse operation. Noise as reliability screening for semiconductor lasers   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The low-frequency electrical noise in semiconductor lasers is measured and used for device-reliability screening, which is a sensitive and non-destructive method. In the experiment, we developed some approaches to improve the validity of reliability screening by using noise criteria. A new method of determining the threshold level of noise criteria is given. The experimental results show that this method is effective. Received: 26 September 2002 / Revised version: 28 January 2003 / Published online: 9 April 2003 RID="*" ID="*"Corresponding author. The behaviour of a rf-excited waveguide CO2 laser in the pulse regime is studied experimentally. The specific time sections of the pulse have been defined and described in detail. The output pulse evolution versus input power, pressure of the laser mixture, output coupling, repetition frequency and pulse width has been investigated. The spectral content of the pulse has been analysed. A model explaining the effect of laser tuning during the pulse duration is given. The ultrahigh pulse (UHP), defined as the pulse for which the bulge effect occurs, is predicted. A miniature high-coherent diode laser was developed. Optical feedback from a high-Q microsphere resonator was used to narrow the spectrum of the laser, and a nearly half-pitch gradient-index lens served as a coupling element. As estimated from the variation in frequency-tuning range (chirp-reduction factor) the fast line width of the laser was reduced by more than three orders. It is remarkable that the system reveals stable single-mode operation at a relatively high feedback level. A tentative explanation is presented in terms of previously given models. Experimental results have demonstrated that the use of ejector-nozzle concepts can allow to achieve simultaneously high chemical efficiency and high pressure recovery in a chemical oxygen iodine laser. The estimated small-signal gain of the gain medium generated by these nozzle banks was from 0.5 to 0.8 %/cm. In laser experiments with all nozzle banks (NB-1–NB-5), Pitot pressures of the order of 80 Torr and Mach numbers of ∼2 in the cavity-mixing chamber have been achieved. The geometry of a given ejector-nozzle bank and gas-flow conditions affect the power extraction and chemical efficiency. The main factors for high efficiency and high power are small mixing scale, high area for the oxygen flow, dilution of chlorine by helium, and the arrangement of nozzles. A chemical efficiency of 25% at a power level of ∼900 W was obtained for NB-1 having the smallest mixing scale, parallel injection of all flows, and dilution of oxygen by helium. The highest power of ∼1.2 kW with a chemical efficiency of 19.5% and 160 W/cm2 of specific output power was achieved with NB-5 having the largest area for the oxygen flow and dilution of oxygen by helium. An intracavity optical parametric oscillator (IOPO) based on bulk KTP crystal was constructed with a Nd:YAG slab as an active medium pumped by a 300-W diode array and Cr:YAG as a passive Q-switch. A signal pulse of 1.9-mJ energy at 1572-nm wavelength was demonstrated. In the cavity, optimized with respect to single-pulse energy, a five-fold shortening of signal-pulse duration with respect to 1064-nm pump radiation was observed. A twice as large level of signal peak power of 650 kW, compared to the pump laser in the same cavity without the IOPO, was achieved. A conversion efficiency of 44% with respect to the 1064-nm pump beam and 3.8% with respect to diode pump energy was demonstrated.
