We prove a Tietze type theorem which provides extensions of little Lipschitz functions defined on closed subsets. As a consequence, we get that the quotient of any little Lipschitz algebra by any norm-closed ideal is another little Lipschitz algebra.

We show that over an elliptic algebra, critical modules of Gelfand-Kirillov dimension 2 exist in all multiplicities (assuming the ground field is uncountable, algebraically closed). Geometrically, this shows that in a quantum plane there exist ``irreducible curve" modules of all possible degrees.

In this paper we provide a necessary condition for a closed ideal in the Fourier algebra of a locally compact amenable group to be completely complemented. The classification of completely complemented ideals is completed in the case of an amenable discrete group. We also investigate the ideals possessing a bounded approximate identity.

We generalize Deddens' theorem for nest algebras in the case of w*-closed nest algebras bimodules. For each such bimodule, we introduce a norm closed sub-bimodule of it, which corresponds to the radical of a nest algebra and describe it in a number of ways, generalizing known facts about nest algebras.

In this paper, we prove a fixed point formula for flat bundles. To this end, we use cyclic cocycles which are constructed out of closed invariant currents. We show that such cyclic cocycles are equivariant with respect to isometric longitudinal actions of compact Lie groups. This enables us to prove fixed point formulae in the cyclic homology of the smooth convolution algebra of the foliation.

C. De Concini and C. Procesi have proved that in many cases the degree of a skew polynomial algebra is the same as the degree of the corresponding quasi polynomial algebra. We prove a slightly more general result. In fact we show that in case the skew polynomial algebra is a P.I. algebra, then its degree is the degree of the quasi polynomial algebra.

Our argument is then applied to determine the degree of some algebras given by generators and relations.

A correspondence between algebra endomorphisms of a finite sum of copies of the algebra of all bounded operators on a Hilbert space and representations of certain norm closed -subalgebras of bounded operators generated by a finite collection of partial isometries is introduced. Basic properties of this correspondence are investigated after developing some operations on bipartite graphs that usefully describe aspects of this relationship.

The integer cohomology algebra of the complement of a complex subspace arrangement with geometric intersection lattice is completely determined by the combinatorial data of the arrangement. We give a combinatorial presentation of the cohomology algebra in the spirit of the Orlik-Solomon result on the cohomology algebras of complex hyperplane arrangements. Our methods are elementary: we work with simplicial models for the complements that are induced by combinatorial stratifications of complex space. We describe simplicial cochains that generate the cohomology. Among them we distinguish a linear basis, study cup product multiplication, and derive an algebra presentation in terms of generators and relations.

We prove that if two countable commutative lattices of projections in the Calkin algebra are order isomorphic, then they are unitarily equivalent. We show that there are isomorphic maximal nests of projections in the Calkin algebra that are order isomorphic but not similar. Assuming the continuum hypothesis, we show that all maximal nests of projections in the Calkin algebra are order isomorphic.

We provide an example of an elementary operator which leaves invariant a nest algebra but which cannot be written as a finite sum of multiplications each of which leaves the nest algebra invariant. We also prove that the given operator lies in the completely bounded norm closure of the linear span of the multiplications which leave the nest algebra invariant.

Sibony and the author independently defined a higher order generalization of the usual Shilov boundary of a function algebra which yielded extensions of results about analytic structure from one dimension to several dimensions. Tonev later obtained an alternative characterization of this generalized Shilov boundary by looking at closed subsets of the spectrum whose image under the spectral mapping contains the topological boundary of the joint spectrum. In this note we define two related notions of what it means to be a higher order/higher dimensional boundary for a space of functions without requiring that the boundary be a closed set. We look at the relationships between these two boundaries, and in the process we obtain an alternative proof of Tonev's result. We look at some examples, and we show how the same concepts apply to convex sets and linear functions.

The length of the spectral sequence of a Lie algebra extension is at most the dimension of the quotient algebra. We show that this bound can be attained for arbitrarily large quotient algebras even when the algebra is nilpotent and the extension splits.

We consider algebras over a field of characteristic zero, and prove that the Jacobson radical is homogeneous in every algebra graded by a linear cancellative semigroup. It follows that the semigroup algebra of every linear cancellative semigroup is semisimple.

The second author constructed a separable direct limit -algebra with real rank zero containing a normal element whose spectrum is the closed unit disk that is not the limit of normal elements in the limiting algebras, and is not a limit of normals in the algebra having finite spectrum. We use Fredholm index theory to modify and simplify this construction to obtain such examples that are not limits of any ``nice' types of elements.

The purpose of this note is to extend the methods and results of Guillemin on elliptic self-adjoint pseudodifferential operators of order one, from operators defined on smooth functions on a closed manifold to operators defined on smooth sections in a vector bundle. The case of bundles of Hilbert modules of finite type over a finite von Neumann algebra will also be treated.

We show that every graded locally finite right noetherian algebra has sub-exponential growth. As a consequence, every noetherian algebra with exponential growth has no finite dimensional filtration which leads to a right (or left) noetherian associated graded algebra. We also prove that every connected graded right noetherian algebra with finite global dimension has finite GK-dimension. Using this, we can classify all connected graded noetherian algebras of global dimension two.
