A Criterion for Finite Topological Determinacy of Map-Germs

Let f, g: (Rⁿ, 0) (R^p, 0) be two C map-germs. Then f and gare C⁰-equivalent if there exist homeomorphism-germs h and lof (Rⁿ, 0) and (R^p, 0) respectively such that g = l f h^–1.Let k be a positive integer. A germ f is k-C⁰-determined ifevery germ g with j^k g(0) = j^k f(0) is C⁰-equivalent to f. Moreover,we say that f is finitely topologically determined if f is k-C⁰-determinedfor some finite k. We prove a theorem giving a sufficient conditionfor a germ to be finitely topologically determined. We explainthis condition below. Let N and P be two C manifolds. For a map-germ f: (Rⁿ, 0) (R^p, 0), we define a certain ojasiewiczinequality. The inequality implies that there exists a representativef: U R^p such that j^kf(U – 0) W^k (Rⁿ, R^p = and suchthat j^kf is multitransverse to S^k (Rⁿ, R^p) at any finite setof points S U – 0. Moreover, the inequality controlsthe rate j^kf becomes non-transverse as we approach 0. We showthat if f satisfies this inequality, then f is finitely topologicallydetermined. 1991 Mathematics Subject Classification: 58C27.     

A Criterion for the Existence of Transversals of Set Systems

Nash-Williams [6] formulated a condition that is necessary andsufficient for a countable family A=(A_i)_iI of sets to have atransversal. In [7] he proved that his criterion applies alsowhen we allow the set I to be arbitrary and require only that_iJA_i=Ø for any uncountable JI. In this paper, we formulateanother criterion of a similar nature, and prove that it isequivalent to the criterion of Nash-Williams for any familyu. We also present a self-contained proof that if _iJA_i=Øfor any uncountable JI, then our condition is necessary andsufficient for the family u to have a transversal.

Topological mixing and Hypercyclicity Criterion for sequences of operators

For a sequence of continuous linear operators on a separable Fréchet space , we discuss necessary conditions and sufficient conditions for to be topologically mixing, and the relations between topological mixing and the Hypercyclicity Criterion. Among them are: 1) topological mixing is equivalent to being hereditarily densely hypercyclic; 2) the Hypercyclicity Criterion with respect to the full sequence implies topological mixing; 3) topological mixing implies the Hypercyclicity Criterion with respect to some sequence that cannot be syndetic in general, and also implies condition (b) of the Hypercyclicity Criterion with respect to the full sequence. Applications to two examples of operators on the Fréchet space of entire functions are also discussed.

     

Existence Criterion for Estimates of Derivatives of Rational Functions

Suppose that K is a compact set in the open complex plane. In this paper, we prove an existence criterion for an estimate of Markov-Bernstein type for derivatives of a rational function R(z) at any fixed point z ₀ ∈ K. We prove that, for a fixed integer s, the estimate of the form |R ^(s) (z ₀)| ≤ C(K, z ₀, s)n‖R‖ _C(K), where R is an arbitrary rational function of degree n without poles on K and C is a bounded function depending on three arguments K, z ₀, and s, holds if and only if the supremum $$\omega (K,z_0 ,s) = \sup \left\{ {\frac{{\operatorname{dist} (z,K)}}{{\left| {z - z_0 } \right|^{s + 1} }}} \right\}$$ over z in the complement of K is finite. Under this assumption, C is less than or equal to const ·s!ω(K, z ₀, s).
