A new α track method is proposed for the measurement of radon (222Rn) concentration in environmental levels. This involves collecting radon daughters on the surface of pilot lamp and detecting α-particles emitted from the nuclides (218Po and214Po) by a detector (LR 115). The detection sensitivity of this method is 6 times greater than that of the conventional α track method.  相似文献

Research was carried out to evaluate the possible correlation between the uranium content in host rocks and the Rn and daughters concentration in air for two Italian ZnS-PbS mines. As a great variability had been ascertained for222Rn and daughters concentration in the different areas, it appeared of some interest to verify whether this fact was due to a different uranium concentration in the host dolomitic rocks or simply to a ventilation problem. Some rock samples were collected in several places where also radon and daughters were drawn; uranium was determined by fluorimetry and by alpha spectrometry after a chemical separation with a Microthene-TOPO column.222Rn was measured by the scintillation cell method, while the decay products were determined by the Markov and Tsivoglou methods. No correlation could be found between uranium content and radon concentration, but a good linearity was detected between the uranium content and the concentration of Rn decay products (alpha potential energy).  相似文献

We have investigated the possibility of determining the relative concentrations of two radon isotopes (222Rn and220Rn) in the air, using solid state nuclear track detectors (CR-39) as alpha spectrometers. The detectors were exposed to222Rn and its daughters and220Rn and its daughters in the air. Analyzing only roundish tracks, it was observed that the performance of CR-39 as alpha spectrometer varies with etching time, improving markedly for long etching times.  相似文献

Alpha- and beta-activities per unit volume of air due to radon (222Rn), thoron (220Rn) and their progenies were measured in the air of natural caves and ancient mines as well as inside different reference atmospheres by using CR-39 and LR-115 type II solid state nuclear track detectors (SSNTDs). In addition, the radon concentration was continuously measured inside one of the studied caves by using the SSNTDs’ method and AlphaGuard counter. Equilibrium factors between radon and its daughters and between thoron and its progeny were evaluated in the studied atmospheres. Alpha-activities due to 218Po and 214Po short-lived radon decay products were determined in different compartments of the respiratory tract of members of the public. The committed equivalent doses due to the 218Po and 214Po radon short-lived progeny were evaluated in different tissues of the respiratory tract of the visitors of the considered caves and ancient mines. Annual effective doses due to radon progeny from the inhalation of air by the visitors of the studied caves and ancient mines were evaluated.  相似文献

Fault traces have been previously located from measurements of 222Rn in soils taken a constant soil-depth across the fault trace. In this paper, we have studied the uranium-series disequilibria of the 226Ra, 222Rn (gas) and 214Bi radionuclides, not only for their horizontal spatial patterns across the fault trace, but also for their vertical spatial patterns near and at the fault trace itself. Radon-222 activities in the soil-gas were measured on-site with a radiation monitor and a Lucas cell. Radium-226 and 214Bi were determined in soil samples in the laboratory by gamma-ray spectroscopy. A new technique employing the measurement of 222Rn versus soil-depth shows a decrease in 222Rn activity at the fault trace due to the much higher soil-gas permeability as a result of the fractured soil, as well as relative larger uranium-series disequilibria, in respect to an increase in 222Rn activity at normal sites, where the soil is not fractured. Finally, it is suggested that fault trace detection could possibly also be performed by measuring 214Bi in surface soils (0-100 cm) along a transect.  相似文献

A new Monte Carlo computer code was developed for determining the detection efficiencies of the CR-39 and LR-115 II solid state nuclear track detectors (SSNTD) for a-particles emitted by radon (222Rn) and thoron (220Rn) series inside the atmosphere of dwelling rooms. Alpha-activities due to radon, thoron and their decay products, were evaluated for the determination of the detection efficiencies of the SSNTD utilized for the emitted a-particles by measuring the corresponding track densities. The influence of the ventilation rate and building material on the concentration of radon, thoron and their progenies was investigated. Equilibrium factors between radon and its progeny and between thoron and its daughters have been evaluated in the air of the rooms.  相似文献

Radon-222 is a good natural tracer of groundwater flow into the coastalocean. Unfortunately, its usefulness is limited by the time consuming natureof collecting individual samples and traditional analysis schemes. We demonstratehere an automated system which can determine, on a continuousbasis, the radon activity in coastal ocean waters. The system analyses 222Rn from a constant stream of water passing through an air-water exchangerthat distributes radon from the running flow of water to a closed air loop. The air stream is feed to a commercial radon-in-air monitor which determinesthe concentration of 222Rn by collection and measurement of theemitting daughters, 214Po and 218Po, via a charged semiconductordetector. Since the distribution of radon at equilibrium between the air andwater phases is governed by a well-known temperature dependence, the radonconcentration in the water is easily calculated.  相似文献

The indoor 222Rn radionuclide was directly absorbed in typical 20 ml glass scintillation vials by passing ?3 dm3 of ambient air through 16 ml of water-immiscible non-volataile scintillation cocktail Ultima-Gold F for 10 min. The activity of radon and its two α-emitting daughters: 218Po and 214Po, was determined with the BetaScout low-background liquid scintillation counter. The limit of 222Rn detection is 9 Bq/m3, and the quantification limit with 20% relative accuracy is 28 Bq/m3. The results of the indoor Rn measurement in different houses showed good consistency with results obtained from a Sarad EQF 3220 device.  相似文献

The radionuclides222Rn and220Rn are measured by incorporating their daughters214Pb and212Pb in a very thin layer of PbS and accumulating the alpha spectrum of their daughter products214Po and212Po. The median yield was measured as 88% using a known amount of210Pb tracer. A single fumarole and all 23 geothermal wells tested were found to contain220Rn. As isotopes of Th, Bi, Po and Ra, are also absorbed in the PbS layer, the method can be used for determinations of these in tap-water.  相似文献

This paper presents the extent of thoron (220Rn) interference in the radon (222Rn) exhalation rate, measured by solid state nuclear track detector based ‘Can’ technique. Experiments were carried out following the standard procedure of ‘Can’ technique as well as active technique as a reference method for 222Rn and 220Rn exhalation measurements. It was found that 220Rn interference may lead to overestimation of 222Rn exhalation by a significant factor which can be as high as 12 depending upon the rate of 220Rn exhalation from samples.  相似文献

Summary Radon measurements were performed across two sections of the Avila fault near Caracas, Venezuela. The radon concentrations clearly showed the different tectonic features and lithology at the Tacamahaca and Spanish Trail sites. 214Bi (U-cps) measurements also were related to the lithology. The passive radon method employed laboratory-made dosimeters with LR 115, type 2 celulose nitrate films as detectors. They were buried in the ground at 30 cm depth. While, the active radon method was performed with a Pylon radon measurement system with Lucas cells. The soil gas was also sampled at 30 cm depths, but for only one minute, which was sufficient to fill the 150 cm3 Lucas cells completely. The total radon counts were then separated into those corresponding to 222Rn (radon) and 220Rn (thoron) by a simple computer routine. A comparison of the active and passive methods for the Tacamahaca section over a three-month period showed that both methods could locate precisely the active fault trace.  相似文献

A new counting method was developed to determine226Ra in environmental samples by separating the equilibrated222Rn into a liquid scintillator. The integral counting method, which was originally developed for isolated individual radionuclides, was extended to the mixture of222Rn and its daughters in equilibrium. The optimum measurement conditions were established by examining the energy spectrum, counting time and quenching effect. An absolute counting was practiced by extrapolating the integral counting rate-bias voltage curve with the highest gain to zero bias. The detection limit thus obtained was 3 to 4·10−13 Ci.  相似文献

The Sorben-Tec system was tested for rapid dosimetric evaluation of 222Rn level in drinking water in domestic conditions using a dosimeter of beta radiometer as a measurement equipment. It was shown that the method is cheap, rapid and very simple, therefore it can be used by population for rapid radiation safety assessment of drinking water. The sorption-active Sorben-Tec system contains iron hexacyanoferrate allowing for separation of approximately 40% of both 214Pb and 214Bi, the short-lived decay products of 222Rn from 5 L water sample. It was assessed that the Sorben-Tec system provides detection limits of radon in 5 L water samples of 35–40 and 10 Bq L?1 for dosimetric and radiometric measurements respectively. The total time consumption of analysis does not exceed 1 h excluding the time for 214Pb and 214Bi ingrowth in the water sample (min. 3 h). Due to an insignificant sorption of radon, it is possible to reuse spent Sorben-Tec system again 3–4 h after previous analysis.  相似文献

This work describes a method which was developed to determine the concentration of 222Rn gas and the equilibrium factor F between the concentration of the gas and its progeny by means of a single device that uses two Makrofol passive track detectors. The device is completely passive and time integrated. Conditions make it very appropriate to be used in any atmospheres in which human activity takes place, such as houses, schools, works and underground mines. A series of measurements of 222Rn gas concentration and equilibrium factor F were made in different cities of the Argentine Republic and the corresponding levels of doses were estimated.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Radon (222Rn) and its parent radionuclide Radium (226Ra) are classified as carcinogen. Human exposes to radon in water via inhalation and ingestion, although ingestion is the only way for radium to enter the human body. In this research, tap water collected from Bornova distinct was studied to determine the concentration of radon (222Rn) and radium (226Ra) for evaluating their radiological impact. For this reason, the annual effective doses for ingestion and inhalation were estimated. The measurements were performed using a collector chamber method. The mean concentrations of 222Rn and 226Ra were determined as 0.85 and 0.76 Bq/L, respectively. It can be stated that the 222Rn and 226Ra concentrations of tap waters here are lower than the international reference levels. Obtained concentration levels were applied to estimate annual effective dose due to the inhalation and ingestion. The dose values are also found to be lower than the recommended maximum values. On the other hand, it should be considered that consumption of these waters (2 L) and average radon and radium concentrations of water are the significant factors for estimating doses.  相似文献

222Rn concentrations along the seismic active area (some distinct in East Anatolian Active Fault System (EAFS), Turkey) were determined by using passive and active (prompt) methods including CR-39 and Markus-10, respectively. It was observed that the changing of 222Rn concentration along the fault lines, crossing the main East Anatolian Fault Line, has shown similar characteristics for both methods. The mean 222Rn concentrations were found to be between 1.2 and 3.6 kBq·m−3 and, 2 and 70 kBq·m−3 by using passive and prompt methods, respectively. Nevertheless, some measured terrestrial gamma-radiation dose rate in the same area has weak positive correlation to 222Rn concentration. Terrestrial gamma-dose rate at 1 m above the ground in the same sampling point, as for 222Rn concentration measurement were made, varied from 8.5 to 10.6 μR·h−1.  相似文献

A walk-in type 222Rn calibration chamber (~ 22 m3) is established at the Centre for Advanced Research in Environmental Radioactivity (CARER), Mangalore University, India which is being used by research groups working on 222Rn in India and other countries as well. In recent times, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) technique is opted as an alternative approach for the prediction of 222Rn concentration profile in the closed domain. CFD simulations were carried out to study the transient build-up and spatial behavior of 222Rn concentration in the calibration chamber. Measurements were performed using active 222Rn measuring devices and results of the CFD predictions and direct measurements were compared. A good agreement was observed between the simulated and experimental results with deviation between the two entities being ~ 3% in the case of transient build up and ~ 8% in the case of spatial distribution of 222Rn concentration.

Otoliths are bony structures found in the ears of fish and used in the210Pb/226Ra dating method for age determination. This paper checks the assumption that222Rn is not lost from or added to orange roughy fish otoliths by diffusion, which would invalidate the technique. The first method of monitoring diffusion relies on measuring the gamma activity of daughter radionuclides. Otoliths were exposed to an atmosphere enriched in222Rn for 10 days, and the supported gamma activity inside them measured allowing for various decay corrections. The calculated radon addition was (0.5±0.5)% of the activity of the226Ra present. The second method used an alpha spectrometer and attempted to detect222Rn directly outgased from otoliths in the detector vacuum chamber. The results were consistent within errors with those of the first method and showed no loss or gain of222Rn, supporting previous estimates of a long life-span for the orange roughy. In contrast it was found that approximately 10% of222Rn formed in orange roughy fish scales was lost to an evacuated environment, (hence perhaps to an aqueous environment) and that for this species it could be difficult to base a dating method on analysis of scales. Nevertheless a preliminary minimum age of 57 years was obtained. The methods could be used with non-biological samples to determine222Rn diffusion rates.  相似文献

A procedure for the determination of 222Rn in environmental water samples using liquid scintillation counting (LSC) was applied. The extractive scintillator RADONSÒ and an ultra-low background 1220 QuantulusÔ were used. A minimum detectable activity of 0.1 Bq·l?1 in 20 ml was found with low-diffusion polyethylene vials and 200 minute measurement time. Quenching effects and possible interferences due to the existence of other radionuclides in the extraction process were studied. The procedure was controlled by gamma-ray spectrometry of the 222Rn daughters. Applications to environmental samples collected from spas, wells, and public springs in Extremadura (Spain) are presented.  相似文献
