Linearized Vlasov-Maxwell equations are solved to obtain the growth rate of free electron laser instability from a tenuous relativistic electron beam propagating in a partially dielectric loaded waveguide immersed in combined axial and longitudinal wiggler magnetic fields. The instability appears via cyclotron resonance interactions for wave perturbations very close to w-kVz-wc=nk 0VZ where n is the general harmonic number. For n=0, the gain is similar to a slow wave cyclotron amplifier. For n⩾1, the growth rate is substantially larger than the standard slow wave free electron laser scheme utilizing a transverse wiggler field  相似文献

Particle simulation in a one-dimensional bounded system is used to examine the formation of acoustic double layers in the presence of two ion species. Double-layer formation depends critically on the details of the distribution functions of the supporting ion populations, and their relative drifts with respect to the electrons. The effect of having two ion components, an H+ and an O+ beam, on double-layer evolution from ion acoustic turbulence driven by an electron drift relative to the H+ beam of ≈0.5u e, where uue is the electron thermal speed, is examined. The ratio of ion drifts is taken to be consistent with acceleration by a quasi-static auroral potential drop (i.e. V H/VO=√MO/ MH=4.0). Acoustic double layers form in either ion species on the time scale τ≈100ωps-1, where ωps is the ion plasma frequency for species `s' and s=H or O, and for drifts relative to the electrons lower than that required for double layer formation in simulations of single ion component plasma  相似文献

In the RECE-Christa device, hybrid-type compact toroid rings are generated by inducing large toroidal plasma currents Ip in strong electron rings using a thin induction coil positioned along the ring axis. Starting from field-reversal values δp =50-120% of the original pure fast-electron ring, the induced plasma current Ip raises δ to a maximum value of up to 240% with Ip contributing more than 50% of the total ring current. The generated hybrid compact toroid configurations appear gross-stable during the full Ip pulse length (half-amplitude width about 100 μs)  相似文献

The parasitic oscillation of the TE°21 gyrotron backward-wave (gyro BW) mode is observed in a low-Q, 8 GHz TE°011, gyrotron. At low power (PBW<5 kW), the oscillation of the gyro BW mode, simultaneously with the gyrotron mode, results in a maximum TE°011, mode efficiency of less than 0.25. The parasitic oscillation is suppressed by operating the gyrotron with a negative magnetic field gradient along the electron beam, which allows the maximum efficiency to reach 0.40 and the output power to be multiplied by a factor varying from 1.4 to 1.7. The optimum efficiency curve of the TE°011 mode indicates that the low-Q cavity behaves as a much higher Qdiff cavity. Excessive values of magnetic field gradient and α favor the TE°012 , longitudinal mode, which oscillates in place of the TE°011 mode and limits its maximum output power. This competitive process is responsible for the high-Q-like behavior of the optimum efficiency curve  相似文献

Formative times in electrical discharges in overvoltaged gaps are analyzed with a model having no spatial dependence and with simple assumptions about discharge channel temperature T and discharge voltage. The model treats the early temporal evolution of the discharge. Specifically, the dissipative voltage drop, V*, across the discharge is taken to be a step function of T. Thermal quasi-equilibrium is assumed in the discharge medium, and it is shown that d(In td)/d(In &thetas;)=-1, i.e., &thetas;td=constant, where &thetas; is the fractional overvoltage and td is the formative time lag, in agreement with measured values of td for much of the experimentally explored range of &thetas;. Highly-time-resolved (~92 ps) experimental data are presented for the first 10 ns of electrical discharge initiation; these data suggest that the authors' model should provide a reasonable representation of t d when td>10-100 ns  相似文献

A general theory is developed for self-consistent calculations of mode competition in a gyrotron with nonfixed axial structure of the RF field for arbitrary cyclotron harmonics. The theory is applied to the gyrotron operating at the Kernforschungszentrum Karlsruhe with a frequency of 150 GHz. The formalism presented allows a self-consistent calculation of mode competition for the operating and parasitic modes at the cyclotron resonance at arbitrary harmonics. Specific calculations are carried out for the cases n0=1, n1 =2 and n0=2, n1=1. It is emphasized that the formalism considered applies only to the case in which the azimuthal orthogonality condition is satisfied: n0m1n1 m0. There are circumstances when this condition is not satisfied  相似文献

A self-consistent solution for the dynamics of a high voltage, capacitive radio frequency (RF) sheath driven by a sinusoidal current source is obtained under the assumptions of time-independent, collisionless ion motion and inertialess electrons. Expressions are obtained for the time-average ion and electron densities, electric field and potential within the sheath. The nonlinear oscillation motion of the electron sheath boundary and the nonlinear oscillating sheath voltage are also obtained. The effective sheath capacitance and conductance are also determined. It was found that: (1) the ion-sheath thickness S m is √50/27 larger than a Child's law sheath for the DC voltage and ion current density; (2) the sheath capacitance per unit area for the fundamental voltage harmonic is 2.452 ϵ0 /Sm, where ϵ0 is the free space permittivity; (3) the ratio of the DC to peak value of the oscillating voltage is 54/125; (4) the second and third voltage harmonics are, respectively, 12.3 and 4.2% of the fundamental; and (5) the conductance per unit area for stochastic heating by the oscillating sheath is 2.98 (λD/Sm)2/3 (e 2n0/mue), where n 0 is the ion density, λD is the Debye length at the plasma-sheath edge, and ue is the mean electron speed  相似文献

An expression for the spatial dependence of the electric potential in a collisionless and source-free planar plasma sheath is presented. This expression is derived by analogy with Child's law and approaches Child's law asymptotically as the potential drop φW across the sheath becomes large, |eφW/kTe|>104. Here k is Boltzmann's constant, Te is the electron temperature, and e is the electronic charge. Comparison with numerical solutions of the model equations indicates that the sheath thickness and potential variation predicted by this improved Child's law are accurate for |eφW/kTe|>10. In contrast, the authors find that Child's law is accurate only when |e φW/kTe|>104  相似文献

Experiments are described which show that the reflection coefficient for ion acoustic waves (IAW) from the sheath at a grid is affected by an HF electric field with a frequency fHF≲5fpi(fpi =ion plasma frequency). For peak-to-peak amplitudes of the HF voltage drop across the sheath Φ0kB Te/e and fHF>f pi, the energy distribution of the ions passing through the grid develops a hot tail and the reflected wave suffers enhanced Landau damping. If Φ0kBTe/e and fHF<fpi, a large-amplitude IAW is excited at the grid; a well-defined ion beam is formed; and local growth of the reflected wave is observed. Test waves launched from the grid show the same propagation characteristics as the reflected waves  相似文献

A Ka-band gyrotron oscillator powered by a compact pulseline accelerator has been operated using oscillator cavities with and without axial slots. The oscillator was operated at high voltage (~900 keV) and high current (~500 A) in the approximate frequency range of 20-50 GHz. The use of axial slots has been shown to suppress low-starting-current whispering-gallery modes, in particular, modes of the TEm2 type, allowing stable operation in a linearly polarized TE13 mode. A peak power of 35 MW has been observed at 6% efficiency  相似文献

The motion of electrons in nitrogen in uniform E× B fields is simulated using the Monte Carlo technique for 240⩽E/N⩽600 Td (1 Td=1×10-17 V cm2) and 0⩽B/N⩽0.45×10-17 T cm3 . The electron-molecule collision cross sections adopted are the same cross sections as those used previously for the numerical solution of the Boltzmann equation. The swarm parameters obtained from the Monte Carlo simulation are compared with the Boltzmann solution and with the experimental data available in the literature. In relation to E×B fields, it is concluded that the Monte Carlo approach provides an independent method of substantiating the validity of the equivalent electric-field approach  相似文献

Experimental studies of a plasma-filled X-band backward-wave oscillator (BWO) are presented. Depending on the background gas pressure, microwave frequency upshifts of up to 1 GHz appeared along with an enhancement by a factor of 7 in the total microwave power emission. The bandwidth of the microwave emission increased from ⩽0.5 GHz to 2 GHz when the BWO was working at the RF power enhancement pressure region. The RF power enhancement appeared over a much wider pressure range in a high beam current case (10-100 mT for 3 kA) than in a lower beam case (80-115 mT for 1.6 kA). The plasma-filled BWO has higher power output than the vacuum BWO over a broader region of magnetic guide field strength. Trivelpiece-Gould modes (T-G modes) are observed with frequencies up to the background plasma frequency in a plasma-filled BWO. Mode competition between the T-G modes and the X-band Tm01 mode prevailed when the background plasma density was below 6×1011 cm-3 . At a critical background plasma density of ≃8×1011 cm-3 power enhancement appeared in both X-band and the T-G modes. Power enhancement of the S-band in this mode collaboration region reached up to 8 dB. Electric fields measured by the Stark-effect method were as high as 34 kV/cm while the BWO power level was 80 MW. These electric fields lasted throughout the high-power microwave pulse  相似文献

A parallel mode launch in the electron cyclotron range of frequencies is performed on axis in the east end cell of the Phaedrus-B tandem mirror. Propagation of the energy launched toward a magnetic beach in a radially hollow density profile was studied experimentally. A strong refractive dispersal of the launched energy was observed and shown to be in good agreement with a WKB-type ray tracing model using a cold plasma Appleton-Hartree dispersion relation. Measurements of plasma density and electron temperature indicate that the use of this dispersion relation is well justified. These results are compared with additional ray tracing studies for radially hollow and nonhollow, high ( flaunch<fp) and low (f launch>fp) density models. For the experimental conditions examined, a reversal of refractive behavior is shown to exist as the energy propagates from a low density (flaunch>fp) region to a high density (flaunch<fp) region  相似文献

The relativistic harmonic content of large-amplitude electromagnetic waves propagating in underdense plasmas is investigated. The steady-state harmonic content of nonlinear linearly polarized waves is calculated for both the very underdense (wp/w 0)≪1 and critical density (wp/w0)≃1 limits. For weak nonlinearities, eE0/mcω0<1, the nonlinear source term for the third harmonic is derived for arbitrary wp/w0. Arguments are given for extending these results for arbitrary wave amplitudes. It is also shown that the use of the variable x-ct and the quasi-static approximation leads to errors in both magnitude and sign when calculating the third harmonic. In the absence of damping or density gradients the third harmonic's amplitude is found to oscillate between zero and twice the steady-state value. Preliminary PIC simulation results are presented. The simulation results are in basic agreement with the uniform plasma predictions for the third-harmonic amplitude. However, the higher harmonics are orders of magnitude larger than expected and the presence of density ramps significantly modifies the results  相似文献

S.C. Wilks et al. (1988) showed that when an infinite expanse of gas, carrying a linearly polarized electromagnetic wave, is instantly ionized, the initial wave is frequency upshifted. This phenomenon of frequency upconversion through flash ionization gives rise to steady-state transmitted and reflected electromagnetic waves and to a time-independent magnetic field. The case in which the final state of ionization is achieved not instantly but in a finite turn-on time, 0⩽tt 0, which is followed by the steady state, is studied. It is shown that the electric field is obtained from the one-dimensional Helmholtz equation, d2F(t)/dt2 02g(t)F( t)=0, if electrons are born at rest when they are created during ionization. As a result, the instantaneous frequency of the upshifted radiation is ω(t)=√g(t). The electric field can be solved exactly for specific choices of g(t). It is solved using WKB approximations for arbitrary g(t). The magnetic field is then found by integrating Faraday's law. It is found that the steady-state electric field amplitude depends on the steady-state value o f g(t) but does not depend on the ionization time t0. Conversely, the static magnetic field amplitude decreases with increasing turn-on time  相似文献

Observations of the cathodic copper plasma expansion at low pressures of He, Ar, and SF6 showed that, for background gas mass densities of ρg=1 to 4×10-4 kg/m 3 and higher, the plasma and gas are separated into two volumes. A shock wave acts as a boundary between the two volumes. The boundary attains a stationary position once its expansion velocity decreases to the velocity of sound in the background gas. This position corresponds to a distance Rc to the cathode that agrees with a snowplow expansion model, giving Rc βf=Er, where f is a function of the arc current and background gas characteristics, E r is the erosion rate of the cathode, and β varies between 2.1 and 2.5. The interaction model is based on kinetic energy exchanges between two gas-like volumes without other energy losses. A maximum pressure limit for vacuum arc deposition is set for ρg /I=2 to 9×10-6 kg/m3 A  相似文献

An X-band dielectric Cerenkov maser amplifier experiment is reported. The amplifier system consisted of a solid, thermionically generated electron beam propagating through a cylindrical waveguide partially filled with an annular, dielectric liner. The input signal was provided by a tunable (9-10.3 GHz) magnetron with power up to 10 kW. Electron beam voltages and currents of up to 250 kV and 100 A could be generated for 1 μs pulse durations. The system was configured to operate in the TM01 mode of the dielectric-lined waveguide. In this experiment the gain of the system with respect to the length of the dielectric liner was studied at a fixed input frequency of 10.3 GHz. At electron beam parameters of 160 kV and 60 A, a power gain of 24 dB over 56 cm of interaction length was measured for an input power of 4.5 kW, corresponding to a maximum RF amplified power of 1.15 MW and 12% efficiency  相似文献

A set of coupled nonlinear differential equations, involving the slow amplitude and phase variation for each mode, is used to simulate the multimode dynamics in the quasi-optical gyrotron. The interaction among various modes is mediated by coupling coefficients of known analytic dependence on the normalized current I, the interaction length μ, and the frequency detunings Δi corresponding to the competing frequencies ωi. The equations include all the possible resonant combinations of up to four different frequencies, ωijkl≃0, among a set of N participating modes, keeping terms up to fifth order in the wave amplitudes. The formalism is quite general and can be used to study mode competition, the existence of a final steady state and its stability, and its accessibility from given initial conditions. It is shown that when μ/β≫1, μ can be eliminated as an independent parameter. The control space is then reduced to a new normalized current I and the desynchronism parameters νiiμ for the interacting frequencies. Numerical simulations for cold beams of various cross sections demonstrate that νi is the most important parameter for the system behavior. Overmoding is not determined by the frequency separation δω among the cavity modes per se, but by the separation among the corresponding desynchronism parameters  相似文献
