The phase-sensitive nature of polarization modulation instability has been demonstrated in optical fibers whose birefringence has been manipulated to generate phase mismatches. Quasi-phase-matched modulation instability has been demonstrated, and the gain of the quasi-phase-matched sidebands has been investigated. The results are in good agreement with experiment.  相似文献

A novel tunable highly birefringent photonic bandgap fiber (PBGF) is designed theoretically by filling its air holes with high-index material. The transmission band can be continuously tuned by changing the refractive index of the filling material. Accordingly, the tunable modal birefringence and polarization mode dispersion of the PBGFs are investigated by adjusting the refractive index of the filling material. Furthermore, we have also analyzed the effect of surface modes in the photonic bandgap on the characteristics of the tunable PBGFs. The simulation results show the feasibility of constructing birefringence-tunable photonic crystal fibers and related fiber devices in practical applications.  相似文献

We report a detailed experimental study of vector modulation instability in highly birefringent optical fibers in the anomalous-dispersion regime. We prove that the observed instability is mainly induced by vacuum fluctuations. The detuning of the spectral peaks agrees with linear perturbation analysis. The exact shape of the spectrum is well reproduced by numerical integration of stochastic nonlinear Schr?dinger equations describing quantum propagation.  相似文献

Experimental results of temperature-, electric field-, and hydrostatic-pressure-induced effects in solid-core highly birefringent photonic liquid crystal fibers are presented. Selective infiltration of the photonic crystal fibers with liquid crystals was found to induce birefringence axes switching resulting in a variety of tunable photonic liquid crystal fibers-based devices.  相似文献

We have theoretically investigated the birefringence and loss properties of the selectively liquid-filled photonic crystal fibers with the liquid asymmetrically infiltrated into one-line air holes along x-axis. A high birefringence value B = 1.74 × 10−3 can be achieved at λ = 1.55 μm. By varying the index of the infiltrating liquid, the birefringence values are shown to be well tuned. In addition, the confinement losses can be efficiently reduced by diminishing the number of liquid holes, which is quite useful for optical devices.  相似文献

Photonic liquid crystal fibers have already been demonstrated as a promising perspective for creation of new classes of dynamically tunable optical fiber devices. By combining different geometries of photonic crystal fibers with a variety of different liquid crystals it is possible to obtain a new generation of fibers with dynamically tunable properties, e.g., transmission spectra, attenuation or dispersion. In this paper, tunable birefringence in a commercially available highly birefringent Blazephotonics PM-1550-01 photonic crystal fiber selectively filled with a low birefringence liquid crystal has been experimentally demonstrated. Theses experimental results have been compared with simulations based on the multipole method.  相似文献

The effect of structural irregularities in photonic crystal fibers on scalar and vector modulational instability (MI) processes is studied by numerical simulations and experiments. For an anomalous-dispersion regime pump, variations in core ellipticity as small as 0.5% over length scales of the order of several meters are shown to have a negligible effect on scalar MI, yet they completely suppress vector MI. In contrast, for a normal-dispersion regime pump, vector MI is shown to be robust against such fluctuations.  相似文献

By adjusting the polarisation state of the pump at 805 nm parallel to slow (x) and fast (y) axes of the highly birefringent photonic crystal fibre with zero dispersion wavelengths 790 nm and 750 nm, this paper demonstrates the efficient polarisation-sensitive four wave mixing involved in pump, anti-Stokes and Stokes signals and soliton self-frequency shift effects induced by the phase-matching between red-shifted solitons and blue-shifted dispersive waves. If the reduction of coupling efficiency to the circular pump laser mode or other circular fibres due to asymmetry of the core is neglected, more than 98% of the total input power is kept in a single linear polarisation. Controlled dispersion characteristic of the doublet of fundamental guided-modes results in achieving light field strongly confined in principal axes of photonic crystal fibre, and enhancing the corresponding nonlinear-optical process through the remarkable nonlinear birefringence.  相似文献

In this paper we discuss the turbulent state of an unmagnetized, completed ionized hydrogen plasma for the case when the electron temperature is much higher than the ion temperature so that the main modes to be considered are the Langmuir and ion-sound modes, while the transverse, electromagnetic mode can for most purposes be neglected. We give in the introduction a brief discussion of the quasi-linear theory of weak Langmuir turbulence as developed by Tsytovich and coworkers. We discuss why the peak of the resulting spectrum occurs at a finite wavenumber; the reason is that the removal of energy through electron collisions is faster than either thermalization of the ion-component or the transfer to yet lower wavenumbers through scattering by ions. In section 2 we sketch Zakharov's derivation of the basic equations which in the linear form describe the three modes mentioned earlier and which describe the nonlinear modulational instability (M.I.). In section 3 we give the linear analysis of the equations derived in section 2 and show that the decay instability of finite-amplitude Langmuir waves is fully covered by these equations. We also discuss the general dispersion relations for perturbations of such finite-amplitude waves and show that they lead to both the M.I. and the decay instability. We evaluate the growth rates for various kinds of perturbations. It is shown that all our results are valid only provided the energy density of the Langmuir modes W is less than the kinetic energy density nTe of the electrons. In section 4 we discuss under what circumtances in the linear approximation the M.I. dominates over other dissipative mechanisms and we show that it may well be the dominant mechanism for the case of strong turbulence, when W/nTeW? > = me/mi. Section 5 is devoted to a discussion of the one-dimensional variant of our basic equations. We give a brief discussion of various soliton-bearing equations such as the Kortweg-de Vries equation (KdV), the sine-Gordon equation (SG), and the non-linear Schrödinger equation (NLS).We discuss the possible connection between the number of polynomial conserved densities (p.c.d.) which lead to integrals of motion and the number of solitons in the strict sense of the term which can occur in a single exact solution of the equation. We also discuss the evolution of a system of Langmuir solitons in terms of their interactions with one another and with ion-sound. In section 6 we first of all show that in three-dimensions soliton-like structures are unstable against adiabatic collapse. We then discuss the dynamics of such collapsing “cavitons” and show that the theory of collapsing cavitons predicts that the turbulent energy should increase as the 23 power of the pumping rate. We discuss the fact that it may be difficult to avoid overcrowding of cavitons which would violate their independence. We finally briefly discuss the few relevant experiments and mention some ideas for future research.  相似文献

The influence of defect-core on the birefringence and confinement losses of rectangular-lattice photonic crystal fibers are investigated numerically by applying the multipole method. Numerical results illustrate that the birefringence in such fibers is determined not only by the arrangement of air holes in the cladding but also the shape of the core. It is found that asymmetry of the core represented by its rectangular shape implies a higher effective index of the mode that is parallel with the longer side of the rectangle, whereas the anisotropic rectangular-lattice cladding gives rise to just the opposite effect and thus the resulting birefringence can be controlled by a proper combinations of both mechanisms. In particular, effect of the asymmetry of the core on the birefringence is dominant for shorter wavelength. Increased birefringence and reduced confinement loss can be achieved, if we form the core by the omission of several air holes in a row to reduce its negative effect on the birefringence. On the other hand, when asymmetry is increased in the other direction, a negative birefringence at shorter wavelength can be achieved. This occurs due to the fact that asymmetry of the core at higher frequencies overcomes the effect of the asymmetric cladding. As a result, its possible to achieve zero birefringence in anisotropic cladding photonic crystal fiber with an asymmetric core.  相似文献

Modulational instability (MI) of electromagnetic waves in a birefringent fiber with a periodic dispersion (two-step dispersion management scheme) is investigated. The properties of new sidebands are studied. The strong variation of dispersion leads to the decreasing of the main MI region and the suppression of additional resonance. In the random dispersion case the MI of all frequencies of modulation in the normal dispersion region is predicted. In the anomalous dispersion case the decreasing of the main MI peak is calculated and changes in the spectral bandwidth of MI gain are found. The analytical predictions are confirmed by the numerical simulations of the full coupled nonlinear Schr?dinger equations with periodic coefficients.  相似文献

We demonstrate that porous fibers in addition to low loss and high confinement, have near zero dispersion for 0.5-1 THz resulting in reduced terahertz signal degradation compared to microwires. We also show for the first time that these new fibers can be designed, introducing asymmetrical sub-wavelength airholes within the core, to achieve high birefringence ≈0.026. This opens up the potential for realization of novel polarization preserving fibers in the terahertz regime.  相似文献

The evolution of quasi-linear optical pulses in birefringent fibers, with strong dispersion-management, is studied analytically. The nonlinear terms of the Gabitov–Turitsyn equations (GTE) are analyzed asymptotically.
