The spontaneous fission (SF) of 252Cf has been studied via γ-γ-γ coincidence and light charged particle—γ-γ coincidence with Gammasphere. The yields of correlated Mo-Ba pairs in binary fission with 0–10 neutron emission have been remeasured with an uncompressed cube. The previous hot fission mode with 8–10 neutron emission seen in the Mo-Ba split is found to be smaller than earlier results but still present. New 0n binary SF yields are reported. By gating on the light charged particles detected in ΔE-E detectors and γ-γ coincidence with Gammasphere, the relative yields of correlated pairs in alpha ternary fission with zero to 6n emission are observed for the first time. The peak occurs around the α2n channel. A number of correlated pairs are identified in ternary fission with 10Be as the light charged particle. We observed only cold, 0n 10Be and little, if any, hot, xn 10Be channels.  相似文献

A method of parametrizing radiative strength functions for electric dipole transitions is used to calculate the spectra of photons emitted by fragments originating from the spontaneous fission of 252Cf nuclei. The LDPL-98 library of parameters, which contains data for 2000 nuclei, is composed for performing relevant calculations. It is shown that the use of this method leads to regular agreement with experimental data—that the structure and the energy dependence of the spectra are reproduced without varying parameters suggests a statistical character of fission-fragment deexcitation.  相似文献

The measurement was aimed at a better understanding of an unusual component found in the high-energy region between 3 and 8 MeV, with fragment mass splits near symmetry. This component was proved to be predominantly emitted by the heavier fragment, to reach its highest intensity at a fragment mass split of 132:120, and to have an almost isotropic angular distribution. The hot bimodal fission of 252Cf is reexamined with new high-statistics data. We constructed a γ-γ-γ coincidence cube for binary fission and LCP-gated γ-γ matrix for ternary fission. By identifying the secondary fission fragments from their γ-ray transitions, we measured the yields for various fission splits. The normal neutron yield distribution is found to be Gaussian for Xe-Ru. However, the binary fission split of Ba-Mo is found to exhibit a bimodal neutron distribution with the “hot mode” corresponding to ≈3.1% of the total yield. In α ternary fission, the first measurements of yields for specific fission splits are presented. The Te-α-Ru and Xe-α-Mo neutron yields fit well with a single mode, but the Ba-α-Zr split shows evidence for an enhanced hot mode with an intensity of ≈13.8% of the normal mode. The neutronless fission of 252Cf is studied in the frame of a molecular model in which the scission configuration is described by two aligned fragments interacting by means of Coulomb (+ nuclear) forces. The study is carried out for different distances between the fragments tips and excitation energies. For a given deformation, the fragment's total energy is computed via the constrained Hartree-Fock + BCS formalism. The total excitation energy present in the fragments is supposed to contribute only to the fragments deformation and the asymptotic value of the kinetic energy is equated to the inter-fragment potential at scission. These two constraints are yielding a few fission channels for a fixed tip distance and excitation energy. Discarding those fission channels corresponding to a disequilibrium in the sharing of the excitation energy between the two fragments, we establish the most likely scission configurations for a specified excitation energy. For the first time, average angular momenta of the ternary fission fragments 100, 102Zr, 106Mo, 144, 146Ba and 138, 140, 142Xe from the α-accompanied fission of 252Cf were obtained from relative intensities of prompt γ-ray transitions with the use of the statistical model calculation. Average values of the angular momenta were compared with the corresponding values for the same fission fragments from the binary fission of 252Cf. Results indicate the presence of a decreasing trend in the average values of angular momenta induced in ternary fission fragments compared to the same binary fission fragments. On the average, the total angular momentum extracted for ternary fission fragments is ∼1.4 ℏ lower than in binary fission. Consequently, results indicate that the mechanism of the ternary α-particles emission may directly effect an induction of angular momenta of fission fragments, and possible scenarios of such mechanisms are discussed. Further, the dependence of the angular momenta of 106Mo and 140Xe on the number of emitted neutrons from correlated pairs of primary fragments was obtained also showing a decreasing dependence of average angular momenta with increasing number of emitted neutrons. The energy costs in the cold ternary fission of 252Cf for various light charged particle emission are calculated by including Wong’s correction for Coulomb potential. Energy cost is found to be higher in cold fission than in normal fission. It is found that energy cost always increases with decrease in experimental yield in all the light charged particle emissions. The higher ground state deformation of the fragments, the odd–even effect and the enhanced yield in the octupole region observed in cold fission are found to be consistent with the concept of energy cost.  相似文献

Measurements of fission fragment yields and neutron multiplicities have been carried out for the Mo-Ba fragment pairs in the spontaneous fission of 252Cf, using the γ-ray spectroscopy technique to analyze γ-γ-γ coincidence data. Prompt γ -ray multiplicities were also measured as a function of the number of neutrons emitted in the fission process leading to the Mo-Ba partition. We do not observe the enhancement in the yields of events with high neutron emission multiplicity (νn > 7) that has been associated to a second fission mode leading to the production of hyperdeformed Ba fragments, as reported in some earlier studies. Angular and energy distributions of ternary fission products of 252Cf have been measured with a position sensitive ionization chamber. Most of the observed triple coincidences are light-charged-particle accompanied fission events. The few events registered with relative angles near 120° allow to deduce an upper limit of 10−8 per binary fission for a symmetric ternary fragmentation, in contradiction to previous counting experiments yielding ternary-to-binary fission ratios between 10−4 and 10−6.  相似文献

Deformations of fission fragments at fixed kinetic energies of a light fragment have been calculated within the droplet model. The calculations performed demonstrate the existence of a spherical shape with A 1 = 76 and A h = 134 (β1, βh ≈ 0). Fragments with A 1 < 76 and A h < 130 pass from the spherical to flattened shape. Experimental data obtained previously for the energy-angular distribution of neutrons originating from the fission of 252Cf (spontaneous fission) and 235U (thermal-neutron-induced fission) nuclei are analyzed, the angle being measured with respect to the direction of fission-fragment motion. A regularity common to all independent experiments is revealed: at an angle of about 90°, there exists an excess of neutrons (30% for 252Cf and 60% for 235U) that does not admit explanation within the model of neutron emission from fully accelerated fragments. Two possible explanations of this experimental fact—neutron emission during the acceleration process and the existence of an additional source of neutrons (predominantly, prescission neutrons)—are considered. It is shown that the latter conjecture describes the observed features for both nuclei more adequately. The total yield of prescission neutrons and their energy and angular distributions are determined.  相似文献

A new experiment devoted to the fission of 252Cf is described. It continued a series of our experiments based on correlation measurements of γ rays emitted by fission fragment pairs. The measurements of γ-γ and γ-γ-γ coincidences were done at Gammasphere with closed 252Cf sources. The open source was used for the first time in the last experiment. Fission fragment detectors were arranged in the center hole of Gammasphere. Correlations between fission fragment masses, total kinetic energy, and γ rays were observed. The energy of both fission fragments of 244Cm and 252Cf, respectively, was measured in coincidence with the prompt neutrons (see part II). Energy calibration of the surface-barrier detectors was done after the method of Schmitt et al. with the 252Cf fragments. Mean values and rms widths of the mass and energy distributions of both isotopes are calculated and compared with the results of other authors. The dependence of the Coulomb energy of deformed nuclei on the shape and the nuclear matter density distribution is considered. For an ellipsoidal shape of the nucleus and a homogeneous distribution of nuclear matter, the result was obtained in a simple analytical form convenient for further use. Separate attention was paid to the consideration of a Fermi-like distribution of nuclear matter using different shapes of the nucleus that reflect several different kinds of collective motions. After these considerations, the dependence of the Coulomb energy of the fission products at the scission point of binary fission reactions on configurations, shapes and nuclear matter distributions was investigated. Calculation of the dependence of the shape of the nuclei deformation parameters at the scission point from their total kinetic energies was made in detail.
