The direct numerical simulation (DNS) of the Taylor–Couette flow in the fully turbulent regime is described. The numerical method extends the work by Quadrio and Luchini [M. Quadrio, P. Luchini, Eur. J. Mech. B/Fluids 21 (2002) 413–427], and is based on a parallel computer code which uses mixed spatial discretization (spectral schemes in the homogeneous directions, and fourth-order, compact explicit finite-difference schemes in the radial direction). A DNS is carried out to simulate for the first time the turbulent Taylor–Couette flow in the turbulent regime. Statistical quantities are computed to complement the existing experimental information, with a view to compare it to planar, pressure-driven turbulent flow at the same value of the Reynolds number. The main source for differences in flow statistics between plane and curved-wall flows is attributed to the presence of large-scale rotating structures generated by curvature effects.  相似文献

The Couette flow of binary gaseous mixtures is studied on the basis of the McCormack model of the Boltzmann equation, which was solved numerically by the discrete velocity method. The calculations were carried out for three mixtures of noble gases: neon–argon, helium–argon, and helium–xenon. The stress tensor and bulk velocity of both species were calculated for several values of the gas rarefaction in the range from 0.01 to 40 for three values of the molar concentrations: 0.1,0.5 and 0.9. The numerical solution together with an analytical solution based on the slip boundary condition cover the whole range of the gas rarefaction. It was showed that the Couette flow is weakly affected by the intermolecular interaction law.  相似文献

Some effects of the possible relaxation transition from viscoelastic liquid state to highly elastic solid state were theoretically and numerically investigated in the shear situations, within the approach proposed in papers [1, 2, 5, 16]. It was found that for a single Maxwellian model the constitutive equations developed in [1, 2, 5] are not valid at elevated shear stresses. Some new aspects of the possible rheological behavior of elastic liquids in subcritical (before transition) and supercritical (after transition) regimes were demonstrated. The mechanism of fluidity loss studied in this paper could serve as a possible trigger mechanism for the melt flow instabilities.  相似文献

This article presents a biography of Maurice Couette, whose name is associated with a type of flow, of viscometer, and with a correction method for end effects in capillary flows. His life and work are described, with special mention being made of the cylinder apparatus that he designed. The relevance of his work to present day rheology is stressed.  相似文献

Axisymmetrically stable turbulent Taylor vortices between two concentric cylinders are studied with respect to the transition from vortex to wall driven turbulent production. The outer cylinder is stationary and the inner cylinder rotates. A low Reynolds number turbulence model using the kω formulation, facilitates an analysis of the velocity gradients in the Taylor–Couette flow. For a fixed inner radius, three radius ratios 0.734, 0.941 and 0.985 are employed to identify the Reynolds number range at which this transition occurs. At relatively low Reynolds numbers, turbulent production is shown to be dominated by the outflowing boundary of the Taylor vortex. As the Reynolds number increases, shear driven turbulence (due to the rotating cylinder) becomes the dominating factor. For relatively small gaps turbulent flow is shown to occur at Taylor numbers lower than previously reported. Copyright © 2002 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Stokes and Couette flows produced by an oscillatory motion of a wall are analyzed under conditions where the no-slip assumption between the wall and the fluid is no longer valid. The motion of the wall is assumed to have a generic sinusoidal behavior. The exact solutions include both steady periodic and transient velocity profiles. It is found that slip conditions between the wall and the fluid produces lower amplitudes of oscillations in the flow near the oscillating wall than when no-slip assumption is utilized. Further, the relative velocity between the fluid layer at the wall and the speed of the wall is found to overshoot at a specific oscillating slip parameter or vibrational Reynolds number at certain times. In addition, it is found that wall slip reduces the transient velocity for Stokes flow while minimum transient effects for Couette flow is achieved only for large and small values of the wall slip coefficient and the gap thickness, respectively. The time needed to reach to steady periodic Stokes flow due to sine oscillations is greater than that for cosine oscillations with both wall slip and no-slip conditions.  相似文献

Recently the concept of adaptive grid computation has received much attention in the computational fluid dynamics research community. This paper continues the previous efforts of multiple one-dimensional procedures in developing and asessing the ideas of adaptive grid computation. The focus points here are the issue of numerical stability induced by the grid distribution and the accuracy comparison with previously reported work. Two two-dimensional problems with complicated characteristics—namely, flow in a channel with a sudden expansion and natural convection in an enclosed square cavity—are used to demonstrate some salient features of the adaptive grid method. For the channel flow, by appropriate distribution of the grid points the numerical algorithm can more effectively dampen out the instabilities, especially those related to artificial boundary treatments, and hence can converge to a steady-state solution more rapidly. For a more accurate finite difference operator, which contains less undesirable numerical diffusion, the present adaptive grid method can yield a steady-state and convergent solution, while uniform grids produce non-convergent and numerically oscillating solutions. Furthermore, the grid distribution resulting from the adaptive procedure is very responsive to the different characteristics of laminar and turbulent flows. For the problem of natural convection, a combination of a multiple one-dimensional adaptive procedure and a variational formulation is found very useful. Comparisons of the solutions on uniform and adaptive grids with the reported benchmark calculations demonstrate the important role that the adaptive grid computation can play in resolving complicated flow characteristics.  相似文献

A low Reynolds number (LRN) formulation based on the Partially Averaged Navier-Stokes (PANS) modelling method is presented, which incorporates improved asymptotic representation in near-wall turbulence modelling. The effect of near-wall viscous damping can thus be better accounted for in simulations of wall-bounded turbulent flows. The proposed LRN PANS model uses an LRN k-ε model as the base model and introduces directly its model functions into the PANS formulation. As a result, the inappropriate wall-limiting behavior inherent in the original PANS model is corrected. An interesting feature of the PANS model is that the turbulent Prandtl numbers in the k and ε equations are modified compared to the base model. It is found that this modification has a significant effect on the modelled turbulence. The proposed LRN PANS model is scrutinized in computations of decaying grid turbulence, turbulent channel flow and periodic hill flow, of which the latter has been computed at two different Reynolds numbers of Re = 10,600 and 37,000. In comparison with available DNS, LES or experimental data, the LRN PANS model produces improved predictions over the standard PANS model, particularly in the near-wall region and for resolved turbulence statistics. Furthermore, the LRN PANS model gives similar or better results - at a reduced CPU time - as compared to the Dynamic Smagorinsky model.  相似文献

The onset of instability with respect to the spatio-temporally growing disturbance in a viscosity-stratified two-layer liquid film flow is analyzed. The known results obtained from the temporal theory of instability show that the flow is unstable in the limit of zero Reynolds numbers. The present theory predicts the neutral stability in the same limit. The discrepancy is explained. Based on the mechanical energy equation, a new mechanism of instability is found. The new mechanism is associated with the convective nature of the disturbance that is not Galilei invariant.  相似文献

We perform DNS of passive scalar transport in low Reynolds number turbulent channel flow at Schmidt numbers up to Sc = 49. The high resolutions required to resolve the scalar concentration fields at such Schmidt numbers are achieved by a hierarchical algorithm in which only the scalar fields are solved on the grid dictated by the Batchelor scale. The velocity fields are solved on coarser grids and prolonged by a conservative interpolation to the fine-grid.

The trends observed so far at lower Schmidt numbers Sc  10 are confirmed, i.e. the mean scalar gradient steepens at the wall with increasing Schmidt number, the peaks of turbulent quantities increase and move towards the wall. The instantaneous scalar fields show a dramatic change. Observable structures get longer and thinner which is connected with the occurrence of steeper gradients, but the wall concentrations penetrate less deeply into the plateau in the core of the channel.

Our data shows that the thickness of the conductive sublayer, as defined by the intersection point of the linear with the logarithmic asymptote scales with Sc−0.29. With this information it is possible to derive an expression for the dimensionless transfer coefficient K+ which is only dependent on Sc and Reτ. This expression is in full accordance to previous results which demonstrates that the thickness of the conductive sublayer is the dominating quantity for the mean scalar profile.  相似文献

This paper discusses the nonlinear stability behaviour of distorted plane Couette flowto 2-dimensional disturbances, and compares it with that of distorted plane Poiseuille flow. The results show that plane Couette flow is more unstable than plane Poiseuille flow tofinite-amplitude disturbances.  相似文献

Satisfying the boundary conditions at the free surface may impose severe difficulties to the computation of turbulent open-channel flows with finite-volume or finite-element methods, in particular, when the flow conditions are nearly critical. It is proposed to apply an iteration procedure that is based on an asymptotic expansion for large Reynolds numbers and Froude numbers close to the critical value 1.The iteration procedure starts by prescribing a first approximation for the free surface as it is obtained from solving an ODE that has been derived previously by means of an asymptotic expansion (Grillhofer and Schneider, 2003). The numerical solution of the full equations of motion then gives a surface pressure distribution that differs from the constant value required by the dynamic boundary condition. To determine a correction to the elevation of the free surface we next solve an ODE that is obtained from the asymptotic analysis of the flow with a prescribed pressure disturbance at the free surface. The full equations of motion are then solved for the corrected surface, and the procedure is repeated until criteria of accuracy for surface elevation and surface pressure, respectively, are satisfied. The method is applied to an undular hydraulic jump as a test case.  相似文献

Using two orthogonal arrays of 16 X-wires, eight in the (x,y)-plane and eight in the (x,z)-plane, the effect of the Reynolds number in a turbulent plane far-wake has been investigated for two values of Reθ (based on the free stream velocity and the momentum thickness), i.e. 1350 and 4600. It is observed that as the Reynolds number increases the magnitudes of the measured Reynolds stresses increase, as does the size of two-point vorticity correlation iso-contours. Discernible differences are also observed in probability density function, spectra and three-dimensional topologies. The Reynolds number dependence seems to vanish when Reθ5000.  相似文献

This paper provides a conceptual analysis and a computational model for how the unsteady ‘buffeting’ phenomenon develops in transonic, low incidence flow around a supercritical aerofoil, the OAT15A, at Reynolds number of 3.3 million. It is shown how a low-frequency buffet mode is amplified in the shock-wave region and then develops upstream and downstream interaction with the alternating von Kármán eddies in the wake past the trailing-edge as well as with the shear-layer, Kelvin–Helmholtz vortices. These interactions are tracked by wavelet analysis, autoregressive (AR) modelling and by Proper Orthogonal Decomposition. The frequency modulation of the trailing-edge instability modes is shown in the spectra and in the wall-pressure fluctuations. The amplitude modulation of the buffet and von Kármán modes has been also quantified by POD analysis. The thinning of the shear layers, both at the outer edge of the turbulent boundary layers and the wake, caused by an ‘eddy-blocking’ mechanism is modelled by stochastic forcing of the turbulent kinetic energy and dissipation, by small-scale straining of the higher-order POD modes. The benefits from thinning the shear-layers by taking into account the interfacial dynamics are clearly shown in the velocity profiles, and wall pressure distribution in comparison with the experimental data.  相似文献

LES and RANS for Turbulent Flow over Arrays of Wall-Mounted Obstacles   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Large-eddy simulation (LES) has been applied to calculate the turbulent flow over staggered wall-mounted cubes and staggered random arrays of obstacles with area density 25%, at Reynolds numbers between 5 × 103 and 5 106, based on the free stream velocity and the obstacle height. Re = 5 × 103 data were intensively validated against direct numerical simulation (DNS) results at the same Re and experimental data obtained in a boundary layer developing over an identical roughness and at a rather higher Re. The results collectively confirm that Reynolds number dependency is very weak, principally because the surface drag is predominantly form drag and the turbulence production process is at scales comparable to the roughness element sizes. LES is thus able to simulate turbulent flow over the urban-like obstacles at high Re with grids that would be far too coarse for adequate computation of corresponding smooth-wall flows. Comparison between LES and steady Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) results are included, emphasising that the latter are inadequate, especially within the canopy region.  相似文献

The bifurcation of confined swirling flows was numerically investigated by employing both the k-? and algebraic stress turbulence models. Depending upon the branch solution examined, dual flow patterns were predicted at certain swirl levels. In the lower-branch solution which is obtained by gradually increasing the swirl level from a low-swirl flow, the flow changes with increasing swirl number from the low-swirl flow pattern to a high-swirl flow pattern. In the upper-branch solution which is acquired by gradually decreasing the swirl level from a high-swirl flow, on the other hand, the flow can maintain itself in the high-swirl flow pattern at the swirl levels where it exhibits the low-swirl flow pattern in the lower branch. The bifurcation of confined swirling flows was predicted with either the k-? model or the algebraic stress model being employed. Both the k-? and algebraic stress models result in comparable and sufficiently good predictions for confined swirling flows if high-order numerical schemes are used. The reported poor performance of the k-? model was clarified to be mainly attributable to the occurrence of the bifurcation and the use of low-order numerical schemes.  相似文献

The Speed Bump flow model was designed by Boeing to provide a mildly three-dimensional flow with separation from a very smooth surface, strongly controlled by the turbulence. Experiments are conducted by several teams, as are simulations, over a range of Reynolds numbers. Direct Numerical Simulations (DNS) are not possible for the full 3D geometry of width L, leading several groups to conduct DNS over a two-dimensional geometry, in other words the cross-section of the full geometry, with periodic lateral conditions and a typical domain width of 0.04L. This does not allow precise comparisons with experiment, but code-to-code comparison is instructive. A shallow separation bubble is present, as intended. The domain width becomes marginal after reattachment, where the boundary layer is much thicker. The Reynolds number based on L has been 106, so far in the literature, which causes partial relaminarization and tends to defeat the purpose of testing turbulence models. Flow visualisation is clear on this. Here, we present results at the Reynolds number 106 and 1.4 × 106, and the higher value essentially eliminates relaminarization. Detailed results are shown, including studies of domain width, grid resolution, and numerical dissipation. The turbulence models give inaccurate results for skin friction, already in the intense favourable pressure gradient, which causes the formation of an internal boundary layer; the separation prediction on the other hand is reasonable. The wall curvature seems to play a role. The present results also provide trustworthy data to test Large-Eddy Simulation (LES), especially if using a Wall Model (WMLES). The comparisons will have a preliminary character until the results of the ongoing detailed experiments and of DNS at even higher Reynolds number and with a wider domain are available and carefully compared.  相似文献

An accurate finite‐volume‐based numerical method for the simulation of an isothermal two‐phase flow, consisting of a liquid slug translating in a non‐reacting gas in a circular pipe is presented. This method is built on a sharp interface concept and developed on an Eulerian Cartesian fixed‐grid with a cut‐cell scheme and marker points to track the moving interface. The unsteady, axisymmetric Navier–Stokes equations in both liquid and gas phases are solved separately. The mass continuity and momentum flux conditions are explicitly matched at the true surface phase boundary to determine the interface shape and movement. A quadratic curve fitting algorithm with marker points is used to yield smooth and accurate information of the interface curvatures. It is uniquely demonstrated for the first time with the current method that conservation of mass is strictly enforced for continuous infusion of flow into the domain of computation. The method has been used to compute the velocity and pressure fields and the deformation of the liquid core. It is also shown that the current method is capable of producing accurate results for a wide range of Reynolds number, Re, Weber number, We, and large property jumps at the interface. In this paper, the shape problem of interface of bicomponent flows between two concentric rotating cylinders is investigated. With tensor analysis, the problem is reduced to an energy functional isoperimetric problem when neglecting the effects of the dissipative energy caused by viscosity. We derive the associated Euler-Lagrangian equation, which is a nonlinear elliptic boundary value problem of the second order. Moreover, by considering the effects of the dissipative energy, we propose another total energy functional to characterize the geometric shape of the interface, and obtain the corresponding Euler-Lagrangian equation, which is also a nonlinear elliptic boundary value problem of the second order. Thus, the problem of the geometric shape is converted into a nonlinear boundary value problem of the second order in both cases.  相似文献
