The thermal behavior and overall isothermal crystallization kinetics of a series of organophilic modified montmorillonite–poly(?‐caprolactone) nanocomposites were investigated. In general, the thermal behavior was influenced more by the type of dispersion than by the clay content. For nanocomposites in which silicate platelets were predominantly dispersed in the polymer matrix to give exfoliated structures, the thermal properties were improved with respect to those of neat poly(?‐caprolactone), whereas in those cases in which simply intercalated structures were attained, the thermal properties regularly decayed as the clay content increased. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The multiple melting behavior of poly(ε‐caprolactone) (PCL) was investigated by real‐time small angle X‐ray scattering (SAXS) and wide angle X‐ray scattering (WAXS) measurements coupling with differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Semicrystalline specimens prepared by a continuous cooling process showed lengthening of the Bragg period during the progress of double melting. A model of variable thickness of lamella was proposed to fit to the SAXS patterns and revealed that both the crystalline lamella and the amorphous layer contributed to the increase in Bragg period while the later dominated the contribution. The model of variable thickness although satisfied the SAXS data was unable to compromise the data from other probing tools. A modification of the model proposed that each lamella piling up to construct the stacks in the crystallites was itself nonuniform in thickness. The modification with the parallel occurrence of the mechanism of surface melting and crystallization successfully compromised the observations from SAXS, DSC, and optical microscopy and provided a new perspective for the explanation to lengthening of the Bragg period related to multiple melting behavior. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this study, we investigated the melting and crystallization behavior of polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS)‐capped poly(ε‐caprolactone) PCL with various lengths of PCL chains by means of X‐ray diffraction and differential scanning calorimetry. This organic–inorganic macromolecule possesses a tadpole‐like structure in which the bulky POSS cage is the “head” whereas PCL chain the “tail”. The novel organic–inorganic association result in the significant alterations in the melting and crystallization behavior of PCL. The POSS‐terminated PCL displayed the enhanced equilibrium melting points compared to the control PCL. Both the overall crystallization rate and the spherulitic growth rate of the POSS‐terminated PCLs increased with increasing the concentration of POSS (or with decreasing length of PCL chain in the hybrids). The analysis of Avrami equation shows that the crystallization of the POSS‐terminated PCL preferentially followed the mechanism of spherulitic growth with instantaneous nuclei. It is found that the folding free energy of surface for the POSS‐terminated PCLs decreased with increasing the concentration of POSS. Nanocomposites based on biodegradable polycaprolactone (PCL) and organically modified layered silicates (organoclay) were prepared by melt mixing. Their structures and properties were characterized by wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction, thermal analysis, and rheological measurements. The exfoliation of the organoclay was achieved via a melt mixing process in an internal mixer and showed a dependence on the type of organic modifier, the organoclay contents, and the processing temperature. The addition of the organoclay to PCL increased the crystallization temperature of PCL, but a high content of the organoclay could show an inverse effect. The PCL/organoclay nanocomposites showed a significant enhancement in their mechanical properties and thermal stability due to the exfoliation of the organoclay. The nanocomposites showed a much higher complex viscosity than the neat PCL and significant shear‐thinning behavior in the low frequency range. The shear storage modulus and loss modulus of the nanocomposites also exhibited less frequency dependence than the pure PCL in the low frequency range, and this was caused by the strong interactions between the organoclay layers and PCL molecules and by the good dispersion of exfoliated organoclay platelets in the PCL. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Poly(ε‐caprolactone)/montmorillonite nanocomposites were prepared maintaining a constant inorganic content with three means: melt blending of poly(ε‐caprolactone) with natural or organomodified clays, in situ polymerization of ε‐caprolactone in the presence of organomodified clays, and initiation of ε‐caprolactone polymerization from the silicate layer with appropriate organomodified montmorillonites and activator. In this last case, the polymer chains were grafted to the silicate layers and it was possible to tune up the grafting density. The presence of clays did not modify the polymer crystallinity. It was shown that the in situ polymerization process from the clay surface improved the clay dispersion. The gas barrier properties of the different composite systems were discussed both as a function of the clay dispersion and of the matrix/clay interactions. The highest barrier properties were obtained for an exfoliated morphology and the highest grafting density. Similar evolution of the permeability and the diffusion coefficients was observed. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys 43: 205–214, 2005 相似文献

Exfoliated nylon‐11/layered silicate nanocomposites were prepared via in situ polymerization by dispersing organoclay in 11‐aminoundecanoic acid monomer. The original clay was modified by a novel method with 11‐aminoundecanoic acid. In situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy results show that stronger hydrogen bonds exist between nylon‐11 and organoclay than that of between nylon‐11 and original clay. The linear dynamic viscoelasticity of organoclay nanocomposites was investigated. Before taking rheological measurements, the exfoliated and intercalating structures and the thermal properties were characterized using X‐ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, and thermogravimetric analysis. The results show that the clay was uniformly distributed in nylon‐11 matrix during in situ polymerization of clay with 4 wt % or less. The presence of clay in nylon‐11 matrix increased the crystallization temperature and the thermal stability of nanocomposites prepared. Rheological properties such as storage modulus, loss modulus, and relative viscosity have close relationship with the dispersion favorably compatible with the organically modified clay. Comparing with neat nylon‐11, the nanocomposites show much higher dynamic modulus and stronger shear thinning behavior. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Multi‐walled carbon nanotube/poly(ε‐caprolactone) composites (PCLCNs) were prepared by melt compounding. The rheology, nonisothermal crystallization behavior, and thermal stability of PCLCNs were, respectively, investigated by the parallel‐plate rheometer, differential scanning calorimeter, and TGA. Cole–Cole plots were employed successfully to detect the rheological percolation of PCLCNs under small amplitude oscillatory shear. PCLCNs present a low percolation threshold of about 2–3 wt % in contrast to that of clay‐based nanocomposites. The percolated nanotube network is very sensitive to the steady shear deformation, and is also to the temperature, which makes the principle of time‐temperature superposition be invalid on those percolated PCLCNs. Small addition of nanotube cannot improve the thermal stability of PCL but can increase crystallization temperature remarkably due to the nucleating effect. As the nanotube is much enough to be percolated, however, the impeding effect becomes the dominant role on the crystallization, and the thermal stability increases to some extent. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Hydrogen bonding interactions, phase behavior, crystallization, and surface hydrophobicity in nanostructured blend of bisphenol A‐type epoxy resin (ER), for example, diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA) and poly(ε‐caprolactone)‐block‐poly(dimethyl siloxane)‐block‐poly(ε‐caprolactone) (PCL–PDMS–PCL) triblock copolymer were investigated by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, transmission electron microscopy, small‐angle X‐ray scattering, and contact angle measurements. The PCL–PDMS–PCL triblock copolymer consisted of two epoxy‐miscible PCL blocks and an epoxy‐immiscible PDMS block. The cured ER/PCL–PDMS–PCL blends showed composition‐dependent nanostructures from spherical and worm‐like microdomains to lamellar morphology. FTIR study revealed the existence of hydrogen bonding interactions between the PCL blocks and the cured epoxy, which was responsible for their miscibility. The overall crystallization rate of the PCL blocks in the blend decreased remarkably with increasing ER content, whereas the melting point was slightly depressed in the blends. The surface hydrophobicity of the cured ER increased upon addition of the block copolymer, whereas the surface free energy (γs) values decreased with increasing block copolymer concentration. The hydrophilicity of the epoxy could be reduced through blending with the PCL–PDMS–PCL block copolymer that contained a hydrophobic PDMS block. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The crystallization and melting behavior of a series of poly(glycerol adipate) (PGA) based graft copolymers with either poly(ε‐caprolactone) (PCL), poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO), or PCL‐b‐PEO diblock copolymer side chains (i.e., PGA‐g‐PCL, PGA‐g‐PEO, and PGA‐g‐(PCL‐b‐PEO)) was studied using polarized light optical microscopy (POM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), small‐angle X‐ray scattering (SAXS), and wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction (WAXD). These results were compared with the behavior of the corresponding linear analogs (PEO, PCL, and PCL‐b‐PEO). POM revealed that spherulitic morphology was retained after grafting. However, spherulite radius as well as radial growth rate was significantly smaller in the graft copolymers. Evaluation of isothermal crystallization kinetics by means of the Avrami theory revealed that the nucleation density was much higher in the graft copolymers. The DSC results indicated that the degree of crystallinity decreased strongly upon grafting while the melting temperatures of PGA‐g‐PCL and PGA‐g‐PEO were found to be close to the values of neat PCL and PEO, respectively. This was attributed to the absence of specific thermodynamic interactions, and, additionally, to lamella thicknesses being similar to those of the homopolymers. The latter point was confirmed by SAXS measurements. In case of PCL‐b‐PEO diblock copolymers and PGA‐g‐(PCL‐b‐PEO) graft copolymers, the crystallization behavior and thus the resulting lamellar morphology is more complex, and a suitable model was developed based on a combination of DSC, WAXD, and SAXS data. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Exfoliated polyamide‐6 (PA6)/organoclay nanocomposite films with planar‐oriented clay platelets were prepared by the simple hot pressing of melt‐extruded nanocomposite pellets. The average distance between the neighboring clay platelets was controlled by changes in the clay loading content in the nanocomposites. The effects of the clay platelet spacing on the crystallization behavior of PA6 were investigated with transmission electron microscopy and wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction. The crystal lamellae were found to be mainly perpendicular to the clay surface for the nanocomposites with large spacing between the clay sheets at low clay loading contents. This perpendicular orientation morphology was attributed to the strong interactions between the PA6 molecular chain and the clay surface. In contrast, the crystal lamellae were found to be parallel to the clay surface when the spacing between the neighboring clay platelets was less than 30 nm. It was concluded that the confinement crystallization of PA6 within the nanoscale channels formed by clay sheets resulted in this parallel orientation texture. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Layered silicate nanocomposites based on polyamide 6 and polypropylene have been prepared via static annealing experiments. The evolution of clay dispersion into the polymer matrices was monitored by wide angle X‐ray diffraction analysis and transmission electron microscopy. The results have evidenced that the polymer diffusion inside the organoclay galleries is spontaneous and have elucidated the mechanism of nanostructured system formation under static conditions. Indeed, the exfoliation mechanism turned to be a two‐step process consisting of polymer intercalation into the clay galleries and progressive layer delamination. Both steps have turned out to depend on thermodynamic and kinetic parameters. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys, 2010 相似文献

Poly(ε‐caprolactone)‐based segmented polyurethanes (PCLUs) were prepared from poly(ε‐caprolactone) diol, diisocyanates (DI), and 1,4‐butanediol. The DIs used were 4,4′‐diphenylmethane diisocyanate (MDI), 2,4‐toluenediisocyanate (TDI), isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI), and hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI). Differential scanning calorimetry, small‐angle X‐ray scattering, and dynamic mechanical analysis were employed to characterize the two‐phase structures of all PCLUs. It was found that HDI‐ and MDI‐based PCLUs had higher degree of microphase separation than did IPDI‐ and TDI‐based PCLUs, which was primarily due to the crystallization of HDI‐ and MDI‐based hard‐segments. As a result, the HDI‐based PCLU exhibited the highest recovery force up to 6 MPa and slowest stress relaxation with increasing temperature. Besides, it was found that the partial damage in hard‐segment domains during the sample deformation was responsible for the incomplete shape‐recovery of PCLUs after the first deformation, but the damage did not develop during the subsequent deformation. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The properties of polypropylene composites can be tailored through the use of nanoclay fillers. The effectiveness of a metallocene‐catalyzed hydroxyl‐functional polypropylene in the compatibilization of polypropylene layered nanosilicate composites was studied, and the results were compared with those for a commercial maleic anhydride functionalized polypropylene. Polypropylene/organoclay nanocomposites were prepared by melt blending, and two polypropylene/compatibilizer/organoclay ratios, 90/5/5 and 70/20/10, were characterized. The organomodification of the clay was carried out with octadecylamine and N‐methylundecenylamine. The structure of the layered silicate was studied by transmission electron microscopy, wide‐angle X‐ray scattering, and small‐angle X‐ray scattering. The fracture surfaces of the composites and thus the efficiency of the compatibilizers to penetrate the galleries of the organoclays were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, and the melt viscosity was studied by stress‐controlled rotational rheometry. The nanostructure was observed with both alkyl amines used for intercalation. The fillers facilitated the processability of all the composites, consisting of equal amounts of compatibilizer and organoclay filler and, in some of the composites, containing twice as much compatibilizer as organoclay filler. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. To suppress the repulsive interfacial energy between hydrophilic clay and a hydrophobic polymer matrix for polymer–clay nanocomposites, a third component of amphiphilic nature such as poly(?‐caprolactone) (PCL) was introduced into the styrene–acrylonitrile copolymers (SAN)/Na‐montmorillonite system. Once ?‐caprolactone was polymerized in the presence of Na‐montmorillonite, the successful ring‐opening polymerization of ?‐caprolactone and the well‐developed exfoliated structure of PCL/Na‐montmorillonite mixture were confirmed. Thereafter, SAN was melt‐mixed with PCL/Na‐montmorillonite nanocomposite, and the SAN matrix and PCL fraction were completely miscible to form a homogeneous mixture with retention of the exfoliated state of Na‐montmorillonite, exhibiting that PCL effectively stabilizes the repulsive polymer–clay interface and contributes to the improvement of the mechanical properties of nanocomposites. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The effect of organo‐modified clay (Cloisite 93A) on the crystal structure and isothermal crystallization behavior of isotactic polypropylene (iPP) in iPP/clay nanocomposites prepared by latex technology was investigated by wide angle X‐ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry and polarized optical microscopy. The X‐ray diffraction results indicated that the higher clay loading promotes the formation of the β‐phase crystallites, as evidenced by the appearance of a new peak corresponding to the (300) reflection of β‐iPP. Analysis of the isothermal crystallization showed that the PP nanocomposite (1% C93A) exhibited higher crystallization rates than the neat PP. The unfilled iPP matrix and nanocomposites clearly shows double melting behavior; the shape of the melting transition progressively changes toward single melting with increasing crystallization temperature. The fold surface free energy (σe) of polymer chains in the nanocomposites was lower than that in the PP latex (PPL). It should be reasonable to treat C93A as a good nucleating agent for the crystallization of PPL, which plays a determinant effect on the reduction in σe during the isothermal crystallization of the nanocomposites. The activation energy, ΔEa, decreased with the incorporation of clay nanoparticles into the matrix, which in turn indicates that the nucleation process is facilitated by the presence of clay. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Well‐defined peptide‐poly(ε‐caprolactone) (Pep‐PCL) biohybrids were successfully synthesized by grafting‐from ring‐opening polymerization (ROP) of ε‐caprolactone (CL) using designed amine‐terminated sequence‐defined peptides as macroinitiators. MALDI‐TOF‐MS and 1H NMR analyses confirmed the successful attachment of peptide to the PCL chain. The gel permeation chromatography (GPC) measurement showed that the Pep‐PCL biohybrids with controllable molecular weights and low polydispersities (PDI <1.5) were obtained by this approach. The aggregation of Pep‐PCL hybrid molecules in THF solution resulted in the formation of micro/nanospheres as confirmed through FESEM, TEM, and DLS analyses. The circular dichroism study revealed that the secondary structure of peptide moiety was changed in the peptide‐PCL biohybrids. The crystallization and melting behavior of Pep‐PCL hybrids were somewhat changed compared with that of neat PCL of comparable molecular weight as revealed by DSC and XRD measurements. In Pep‐PCL biohybrids, extinction rings were observed in the PCL spherulites, in contrast with the normal spherulite morphology of the neat PCL. There was a substantial decrease (4–5 folds) in the spherulitic growth rate after the incorporation of peptide moiety at the end of PCL chain as measured by polarizing optical microscopy. Pseudomonas lipase catalyzed enzymatic degradation was studied for Pep‐PCL hybrids and neat PCL. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem, 2012 相似文献

Preparation of nanocomposites of organo‐modified montmorillonites and the biodegradable poly(ester amide) derived from glycolic acid and 6‐aminohexanoic acid has been evaluated by the in situ polymerization technique. The reaction was based on the thermal polycondensation of sodium chloroacetylaminohexanoate, which has the formation of the sodium chloride salt as the driving force of the process. Polymerized samples were studied by means of X‐ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. The most dispersed structure was obtained by addition of C25A organoclay. Evaluation of thermal stability and crystallization behavior of these samples showed significant differences between the neat polymer and its nanocomposite with C25A. Isothermal and nonisothermal calorimetric analyses of the polymerization reaction revealed that the kinetics was highly influenced by the presence of the silicate particles. Crystallization of the polymer was observed to occur when the process was isothermally conducted at temperatures lower than 145 °C. In this case, dynamic FTIR spectra and WAXD profiles obtained with synchrotron radiation were essential to study the polymerization kinetics. Clay particles seemed to reduce chain mobility and the Arrhenius preexponential factor. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 47: 3616–3629, 2009 相似文献

X‐ray diffraction methods were used in an investigation of the structural changes in syndiotactic polystyrene (sPS)/clay nanocomposites. sPS/clay was prepared by the intercalation of sPS polymer into layered montmorillonite. Both X‐ray diffraction data and transmission electron microscopy micrographs of sPS/clay nanocomposites indicated that most of the swellable silicate layers were exfoliated and randomly dispersed in the sPS matrix. The X‐ray diffraction data also showed the presence of polymorphism in the sPS/clay nanocomposites. This polymorphic behavior was strongly dependent on the thermal history of the sPS/clay nanocomposites from the melt and on the content of clay in the sPS/clay nanocomposites. Quenching from the melt induced crystallization into the α‐crystalline form, and the addition of montmorillonite probably increased heterophase nucleation of the α‐crystalline form. The effect of the melt crystallization of sPS and sPS/clay nanocomposites at different temperatures on the crystalline phases was also examined. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A unique in situ multiaxial deformation device has been designed and built specifically for simultaneous synchrotron small angle X‐ray scattering (SAXS) and wide angle X‐ray scattering (WAXS) measurements. SAXS and WAXS patterns of high‐density polyethylene (HDPE) and HDPE/clay nanocomposites were measured in real time during in situ multiaxial deformation at room temperature and at 55 °C. It was observed that the morphological evolution of polyethylene is affected by the existence of clay platelets as well as the deformation temperature and strain rate. Martensitic transformation of orthorhombic into monoclinic crystal phases was observed under strain in HDPE, which is delayed and hindered in the presence of clay nanoplatelets. From the SAXS measurements, it was observed that the thickness of the interlamellar amorphous region increased with increasing strain, which is due to elongation of the amorphous chains. The increase in amorphous layer thickness is slightly higher for the nanocomposites compared to the neat polymer. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys, 2011 相似文献

In the last few years much progress has been made in the development of hybrid polymer–inorganic filler nanocomposites. Nevertheless, many questions remain. The comprehension of the structure and the interactions at the polymer–nanofiller interface are crucial to foresee and control the properties of nanocomposites. Because of the high surface ratio of the inorganic nanofiller, the interface is expected to have a prevailing role in determining the nanocomposite properties. In this study we use X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) as a tool for the surface characterization of an organophilic montmorillonite/poly(ε‐caprolactone) exfoliated nanocomposite. The XPS core levels of the nanocomposite have been compared with those obtained from its precursors, and analyzed as reference compounds to evaluate eventual differences attributable to the polymer–nanofiller interfacial interactions. The XPS investigation has allowed us to propose a qualitative model of possible interface interactions between poly(ε‐caprolactone) and the organo‐modified montmorillonite. The model is substantiated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys 42: 3907–3919, 2004 相似文献
