We consider the Sturm–Liouville problem (1.1) and (1.2) with a potential depending rationally on the eigenvalue parameter. With these equations a λ ‐linear eigenvalue problem is associated in such a way that L2‐solutions of (1.1), (1.2) correspond to eigenvectors of a linear operator. If the functions q and u are real and satisfy some additional conditions, the corresponding linear operator is a definitizable self‐adjoint operator in some Krein space. Moreover we consider the problem (1.1) and (1.3) on the positive half‐axis. Here we use results on the absense of positive eigenvalues for Sturm–Liouville operators to exclude critical points of the associated definitizable operator. (© 2007 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. We consider a convection–diffusion problem with Dirichlet boundary conditions posed on a unit square. The problem is discretized using a combination of the standard Galerkin FEM and an h–version of the nonsymmetric discontinuous Galerkin FEM with interior penalties on a layer–adapted mesh with linear/bilinear elements. With specially chosen penalty parameters for edges from the coarse part of the mesh, we prove uniform convergence (in the perturbation parameter) in an associated norm. We consider the Vlasov–Poisson–Fokker–Planck equation in three dimensions as the backward Kolmogorov equation associated to a non‐linear diffusion process. We consider a singular perturbation of the generalized viscous Cahn–Hilliard equation based on constitutive equations introduced by Gurtin. This equation rules the order parameter ρ, which represents the density of atoms, and it is given on a n‐rectangle (n?3) with periodic boundary conditions. We prove the existence of a family of exponential attractors that is robust with respect to the perturbation parameter ε>0, as ε goes to 0. In a similar spirit, we analyze the stability of the global attractor. If n=1, 2, then we also construct a family of inertial manifolds that is continuous with respect to ε. These results improve and generalize the ones contained in some previous papers. Finally, we establish the convergence of any trajectory to a single equilibrium via a suitable version of the ?ojasiewicz–Simon inequality, provided that the potential is real analytic. The purpose of this paper is to introduce a family of q‐Szász–Mirakjan–Kantorovich type positive linear operators that are generated by Dunkl's generalization of the exponential function. We present approximation properties with the help of well‐known Korovkin's theorem and determine the rate of convergence in terms of classical modulus of continuity, the class of Lipschitz functions, Peetre's K‐functional, and the second‐order modulus of continuity. Furthermore, we obtain the approximation results for bivariate q‐Szász–Mirakjan–Kantorovich type operators that are also generated by the aforementioned Dunkl generalization of the exponential function. We consider the evolution of microstructure under the dynamics of the generalized Benjamin–Bona–Mahony equation (1) with u: ?2 → ?. If we model the initial microstructure by a sequence of spatially faster and faster oscillating classical initial data vn, we obtain a sequence of spatially highly oscillatory classical solutions un. By considering the Young measures (YMs) ν and µ generated by the sequences vn and un, respectively, as n → ∞, we derive a macroscopic evolution equation for the YM solution µ, and show exemplarily how such a measure‐valued equation can be exploited in order to obtain classical evolution equations for effective (macroscopic) quantities of the microstructure for suitable initial data vn and non‐linearities f. We consider the problem of the asymptotic behaviour in the L2‐norm of solutions of the Navier–Stokes equations. We consider perturbations to the rest state and to stationary motions. In both cases we study the initial‐boundary value problem in unbounded domains with non‐compact boundary. In this article, we consider a three‐dimensional Navier–Stokes–Voight model with memory where relaxation effects are described through a distributed delay. We prove the existence of uniform global attractors , where ? ∈ (0,1) is the scaling parameter in the memory kernel. Furthermore, we prove that the model converges to the classical three‐dimensional Navier–Stokes–Voight system in an appropriate sense as ? → 0. In this paper, we are introducing pertinent Euler–Lagrange–Jensen type k‐quintic functional equations and investigate the ‘Ulam stability’ of these new k‐quintic functional mappings f:XY, where X is a real normed linear space and Y a real complete normed linear space. In this paper we introduce two Bishop–Phelps–Bollobás type properties for bounded linear operators between two Banach spaces X and Y : property 1 and property 2. These properties are motivated by a Kim–Lee result which states, under our notation, that a Banach space X is uniformly convex if and only if the pair satisfies property 2. Positive results of pairs of Banach spaces satisfying property 1 are given and concrete pairs of Banach spaces failing both properties are exhibited. A complete characterization of property 1 for the pairs is also provided.  相似文献

An orthogonal spline collocation (OSC) spatial discretization is proposed for the solution of the fully coupled stream function‐vorticity formulation of the Navier–Stokes equations in two dimensions. For the time‐stepping, a three‐level leapfrog scheme is employed. This method is algebraically linear, and, at each time step, gives rise to a system of linear equations of the form arising in the OSC approximation of the biharmonic Dirichlet problem and can be solved by a fast direct method. Error estimates in the Hl–norm in space, l = 1,2, are derived for the semi‐discrete method and the fully‐discrete leapfrog scheme which is also shown to be second order accurate in time. Numerical results are presented which confirm the theoretical analysis and exhibit superconvergence phenomena, which provide superconvergent approximations to the components of the velocity. © John Wiley & Sons, Inc. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this paper we are concerned with a weighted least-squares finite element method for approximating the solution of boundary value problems for 2-D viscous incompressible flows. We consider the generalized Stokes equations with velocity boundary conditions. Introducing the auxiliary variables (stresses) of the velocity gradients and combining the divergence free condition with some compatibility conditions, we can recast the original second-order problem as a Petrovski-type first-order elliptic system (called velocity–stress–pressure formulation) in six equations and six unknowns together with Riemann–Hilbert-type boundary conditions. A weighted least-squares finite element method is proposed for solving this extended first-order problem. The finite element approximations are defined to be the minimizers of a weighted least-squares functional over the finite element subspaces of the H1 product space. With many advantageous features, the analysis also shows that, under suitable assumptions, the method achieves optimal order of convergence both in the L2-norm and in the H1-norm. © 1998 B. G. In this paper, we consider the compressible bipolar Navier–Stokes–Poisson equations with a non‐flat doping profile in three‐dimensional space. The existence and uniqueness of the non‐constant stationary solutions are established when the doping profile is a small perturbation of a positive constant state. Then under the smallness assumption of the initial perturbation, we show the global existence of smooth solutions to the Cauchy problem near the stationary state. Finally, the convergence rates are obtained by combining the energy estimates for the nonlinear system and the L2‐decay estimates for the linearized equations. In this article we study the stability for all positive time of the Crank–Nicolson scheme for the two‐dimensional Navier–Stokes equations. More precisely, we consider the Crank–Nicolson time discretization together with a general spatial discretization, and with the aid of the discrete Gronwall lemma and of the discrete uniform Gronwall lemma we prove that the numerical scheme is stable, provided a CFL‐type condition is satisfied. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this paper, we address the accuracy of the results for the overdetermined full rank linear least‐squares problem. We recall theoretical results obtained in (SIAM J. Matrix Anal. Appl. 2007; 29 (2):413–433) on conditioning of the least‐squares solution and the components of the solution when the matrix perturbations are measured in Frobenius or spectral norms. Then we define computable estimates for these condition numbers and we interpret them in terms of statistical quantities when the regression matrix and the right‐hand side are perturbed. In particular, we show that in the classical linear statistical model, the ratio of the variance of one component of the solution by the variance of the right‐hand side is exactly the condition number of this solution component when only perturbations on the right‐hand side are considered. We explain how to compute the variance–covariance matrix and the least‐squares conditioning using the libraries LAPACK (LAPACK Users' Guide (3rd edn). SIAM: Philadelphia, 1999) and ScaLAPACK (ScaLAPACK Users' Guide. SIAM: Philadelphia, 1997) and we give the corresponding computational cost. Finally we present a small historical numerical example that was used by Laplace (Théorie Analytique des Probabilités. In this paper, an asymptotic analysis of the (non‐conserved) Penrose–Fife phase field system for two vanishing time relaxation parameters ε and δ is developed, in analogy with the similar analyses for the phase field model proposed by G. Caginalp (Arch. Rational Mech. Anal. 1986; 92 :205–245), which were carried out by Rossi and Stoth (Adv. Math. Sci. Appl. 2003; 13 :249–271; Quart. Appl. Math. 1995; 53 :695–700). Although formally the singular limits for ε ↓ 0 and for ε and δ ↓ 0 are, respectively, the viscous Cahn–Hilliard equation and the Cahn–Hilliard equation, it turns out that the Penrose–Fife system is indeed a bad approximation for these equations. Therefore, we consider an alternative approximating phase field system, which could be viewed as a generalization of the classical Penrose–Fife phase field system, featuring a double non‐linearity given by two maximal monotone graphs. A well‐posedness result is proved for such a system, and it is shown that the solutions converge to the unique solution of the viscous Cahn–Hilliard equation as ε ↓ 0, and of the Cahn–Hilliard equation as ε ↓ 0 and δ ↓ 0. The aim of this work is to consider the Korteweg–de Vries equation in a finite interval with a very weak localized dissipation namely the H?1‐norm. Our main result says that the total energy decays locally uniform at an exponential rate. Our analysis improves earlier works on the subject (Q. Appl. Math. 2002; LX (1):111–129; ESAIM Control Optim. A system of M(≥ 2) coupled singularly perturbed linear reaction–diffusion equations is considered on the unit square. Under certain hypotheses on the coupling, a maximum principle is established for the differential operator. The relationship between compatibility conditions at the corners of the square and the smoothness of the solution on the closed domain is fully described. A decomposition of the solution of the system is constructed. A finite‐difference method for the solution of the system on a Shishkin mesh is presented, and it is proved that the computed solution is second‐order accurate (up to a logarithmic factor). Numerical results are given to support this result and to investigate the effect of weaker compatibility assumptions on the data. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
