We synthesized a novel photoresponsive monomer, silicon‐containing azo monomer with paired mesogens in the side chain, by reacting 3‐methacryloxypropylmethyldichlorosilane with 2‐[2‐(4‐cyano‐azobenzene‐4′‐oxy)ethylene‐oxy]ethyl alcohol, a mesogenic group. Corresponding homopolymer and copolymers with methyl methacrylate were generated via radical polymerization with AIBN as a radical initiator. Investigations of their thermal properties and optical textures confirmed the monomer and the homopolymer have smectic structures. Homo‐ and copolymer films showed high potential as reversible data recording media via photoinduced alignment of azobenzene groups with irradiation of a linearly or circularly polarized light. Out of all the samples, the copolymer films with high azo dye contents showed the best resolution in the recorded data as well as the fastest response to a pump beam due to large optical birefringence induced in a write‐in process. Strong dependence of the stability of the data stored in the films on the glass transition temperature of the polymers was also observed. In addition, high‐quality holographic grating patterns were inscribed even on the copolymer film with azo molar content of only 7.0% using a modified two‐wave mixing technique. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Microstructure in two diblock methacrylic azo polymers and in some of their blends with PMMA of different molecular weights as well as their photoinduced anisotropy have been investigated. The block copolymers have similar structure but different azo content and degree of polymerization. A synthetic strategy based on a controlled radical polymerization (ATRP) of polymeric blocks and their coupling by click chemistry has been applied to obtain an azo block copolymer of high molecular weight. Microphase segregation has been observed in the block copolymers and in most of the blends. In blends of the block copolymer with lower degree of polymerization (Block 1) azo microdomains change from lamellar to spherical morphology when the azo content decreases from 24 to 3 wt.%. In the block copolymer with higher degree of polymerization (Block 2) and its blends, down to 3 wt.% azo content, spherical azo microdomains have been found. A decrease of the order parameter (η) and the photoinduced birefringence normalized to the azo content (|Δn|norm) has been found in blends of Block 1 when the azo content decreases. However, |Δn|norm and η values similar to those in the azo homopolymer have been observed in Block 2 and its blends. These blends can be used to lower the azo content while keeping a photoinduced response similar to that in the azo homopolymer.  相似文献

Photoorientation and reorientation processes induced by illumination of the samples with oppositely directed polarized light and by the thermal treatment were studied for the films of triblock copolymer pAzo10‐b‐pPhM80‐b‐pAzo10 consisting of a nematic phenyl benzoate сentral sub‐block (PhM, DP = 80) with two terminal smectic azobenzene sub‐blocks (Azo, DP = 10). For amorphized films of triblock copolymer, illumination with polarized light (λ = 546 nm) is shown to be by orientation of only Azo‐containing groups, but upon following annealing of the film, PhM groups are adjusted to the orientation of Azo fragments. It was found, that the subsequent illumination of the block copolymer sample with oppositely directed polarized light changes the orientation of azobenzene groups, while the orientation of phenyl benzoate groups is remained unchanged. Thus, the cyclic illumination of the triblock copolymer samples by the linear polarized light and subsequent thermal treatment make it possible to control and fix orientation of azobenzene and phenyl benzoate groups located in different sub‐blocks in the desired and independent manner. The comparison of these results with the data on random p(Azo7ran‐PhM30) copolymer of the similar composition revealed, that in the random copolymer, both Azo and PhM mesogenic groups are involved in the orientational cooperative process regardless of films process treatment. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We previously reported that ABA‐type triblock copolymers with azobenzene‐containing terminal blocks can be utilized as a light‐induced reworkable adhesive that enables repeatable bonding and debonding on demand. The reworkability was based on the photoisomerization of the azobenzene moiety and concomitant softening and hardening of the azo blocks. Our aim in this study is to investigate the effect of the composition, molecular weight, and block copolymer architectures on the reworkable adhesive properties. For this purpose, we prepared AB diblock, ABA triblock, and 4‐arm (AB)4 star‐block copolymers consisting of polymethacrylates bearing an azobenzene moiety (A block) and 2‐ethylhexyl (B block) side chains and performed adhesion tests by using these block copolymers. As a result, among the ABA block copolymers with varied compositions and molecular weights, the ABA triblock copolymers with an azo block content of about 50 wt % and relatively low molecular weight could achieve an appropriate balance between high adhesion strength and low residual adhesion strength upon UV irradiation. Furthermore, the 4‐arm star‐block structure not only enhances the adhesion strength, but also maintains low residual adhesion strength when exposed to UV irradiation. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The photoinduced anisotropy and volume holographic storage in a series of polymers with different architectures and azo contents of 7% and 20% in weight have been investigated. Measurements of the birefringence (Δn) induced with linearly polarised 488 nm light show that for polymers with an azo content of 20%, the highest and more stable Δn values are achieved in copolymers with a di-block architecture. The Δn induced in polymers with 7 wt% azo content is not stable. Volume holographic polarisation gratings have been stored in the polymers. Only in the case of the di-block copolymer with an azo content of 20% in weight, the stored gratings are stable. A diffraction efficiency higher than 90% and an angular selectivity of 4° have been achieved in gratings with a period of 2 μm. It can be concluded that the di-block copolymer with 20 wt% azo content is the most suitable, among the studied copolymers, as volume holographic storage material.  相似文献

Photo‐chemically tunable photonic band gap materials are prepared by infiltration of liquid crystal polymers having azobenzene groups into voids of SiO2 inverse opal films. Linearly polarized (LP) light irradiation results in transformation from a random to an anisotropic molecular orientation of azobenzene side chains in the voids of the SiO2 inverse opal film, leading to the reversible and stable shift of the reflection peak to longer wavelength more than 15 nm. To improve switching properties, we use copolymers of azobenzene monomer and tolane monomer, which have higher birefringence, as infiltration materials into the voids. The azobenzene‐tolane copolymers are found to show higher birefringence than azobenzene homopolymers by the LP light irradiation at higher temperature. Consequently, the reflection band of the SiO2 inverse opal film infiltrated with the azobenzene‐tolane copolymer can be shifted to longer wavelength region more than 55 nm by the irradiation of LP light. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Nonconjugated bipolar transport polymers have been developed as host materials for electroluminescent devices by incorporating both electron‐transporting and hole‐transporting functionalities into copolymers. The random copolymer PCt‐nvk3‐7 containing mesogen‐jacketed segment of P‐Ct have been synthesized and characterized. The effect of mesogen‐jacketed segment content of these bipolar copolymers on device performance has been investigated. The results of polymer light‐emitting diodes (PLEDs) show that the jacketed content of copolymers has a significant effect on device performance: lowering charge transport and facilitating the hole‐electron recombination leads to much higher current efficiency. Applying these high triplet random copolymers as host, the maximum current efficiency of 0.70 cd/A and the maximum brightness of 1872.8 cd/m2 was achieved for PCt‐nvk3‐7 with an orange‐emitting complex dopant. The results suggest that the bipolar copolymers PCt‐nvks can be good host polymers for electrophosphorescent devices. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. 2,5‐Bis(2‐bromofluorene‐7‐yl)silole was prepared by a modified one‐pot synthesis with a reverse addition procedure, from which novel silole‐containing polyfluorenes with binary random and alternating structures (silole contents between 4.5 and 25% and high Mw up to 509 kDa were successfully synthesized. The well‐defined repeating unit of the alternating copolymer comprises a terfluorene and a silole ring. Optoelectronic properties including UV absorption, electrochemistry, photoluminescence (PL), and electroluminescence (EL) of the copolymers were examined. The different excitation energy transfers from fluorene to silole of the copolymers in solution and in the solid state were compared. The films of the copolymers showed silole‐dominant green emissions with high absolute PL quantum yields up to 83%. EL devices of the copolymers with a configuration of ITO/PEDOT/copolymer/Ba/Al displayed exclusive silole emissions peaked at around 543 nm and the highest EL efficiency was achieved with the alternating copolymer. Using the alternating copolymer and poly(9,9‐dioctylfluorene) as the blend‐type emissive layer, a maximum external quantum efficiency of 1.99% (four times to that of the neat film) was realized, which was a high efficiency so far reported for silole‐containing polymers. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Nonlinear optical (NLO) rigid main‐chain polyesters containing azobenzene mesogens with high thermal and temporal stabilities were synthesized from derivatives of hydroxyphenylazobenzoic acid. The NLO properties of the homopolymer, poly[4‐(4‐hydroxy‐3‐methyl phenyl)azo]benzoic acid, and copolymers of 4‐[(4‐hydroxy‐3‐methylphenyl)azo]benzoic acid, 4‐[(4‐hydroxy‐2‐methylphenyl)azo]benzoic acid, and 4‐[(4‐hydroxy‐2‐pentadecyl phenyl)azo]benzoic acid (PSCpHBA) with p‐HBA were measured by the Maker fringe technique. The thermal and liquid‐crystalline (LC) phase behaviors of the polymers were examined by differential scanning calorimetry, a thermal‐stimulated polarization current, and polarized light microscopy. The polymers except PSCpHBA exhibited nematic‐threaded and Schlieren textures. The LC orientations give rise to an enhanced NLO response. The polymers had high thermal and temporal stabilities for second‐harmonic generation activity because of their rigid aromatic backbone. This study suggests that the rigid aromatic main chain exhibiting an LC phase is a promising simple method to synthesize highly stable NLO polymers. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of main‐chain, thermotropic, liquid‐crystalline (LC), hydrogen‐bonded polymers or self‐assembled structures based on 4,4′‐bipyridyl as a hydrogen‐bond acceptor and aliphatic dicarboxylic acids, such as adipic and sebacic acids, as hydrogen‐bond donors were prepared by a slow evaporation technique from a pyridine solution and were characterized for their thermotropic, LC properties with a number of experimental techniques. The homopolymer of 4,4′‐bipyridyl with adipic acid exhibited high‐order and low‐order smectic phases, and that with sebacic acid exhibited only a high‐order smectic phase. Like the homopolymer with adipic acid, the two copolymers of 4,4′‐bipyridyl with adipic and sebacic acids (75/25 and 25/75) also exhibited two types of smectic phases. In contrast, the copolymer of 4,4′‐bipyridyl with adipic and sebacic acids (50/50), like the homopolymer with sebacic acid, exhibited only one high‐order smectic phase. Each of them, including the copolymers, had a broad temperature range of LC phases (36–51 °C). The effect of copolymerization for these hydrogen‐bonded polymers on the thermotropic properties was examined. Generally, copolymerization increased the temperature range of LC phases for these polymers, as expected, with a larger decrease in the crystal‐to‐LC transition than in the LC‐to‐isotropic transition. Additionally, it neither suppressed the formation of smectic phases nor promoted the formation of a nematic phase in these hydrogen‐bonded polymers, as usually observed in many thermotropic LC polymers. The thermal transitions for all of them, measured by differential scanning calorimetry, were well below their decomposition temperatures, as measured by thermogravimetric analysis, which were in the temperature range of 193–210 °C. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Long‐term stable holographic volume gratings in azobenzene‐containing films have potential applications as forgery‐proof security features or in holographic data storage. However, azobenzene‐based polymer systems often lack sufficiently high writing speeds. Here, an approach to improve the holographic writing performance of photo‐orientable azobenzene‐containing polymers by blending with azobenzene molecular glasses is presented. The molecular glass enhances the photo‐plastification effect and, consequently, the writing speed. This concept of improving the holographic performance of photo‐orientable azobenzene polymers with azobenzene molecular glasses is demonstrated with a homopolymer and two block copolymers. In the azobenzene homopolymer, an addition of 10 wt % of the molecular glass leads to a doubling of the writing speed. Simultaneously, the long‐term stability of inscribed gratings is maintained. In case of the block copolymers, the molecular glass is present in the polystyrene matrix and accumulates in the azobenzene minority phase. Adding 5–10 wt % of molecular glass improves the writing speed of the azobenzene block copolymer by a factor of 3–4. An addition of 15 wt % of molecular glass to the block copolymer containing azobenzene and nonphotoactive mesogenic side groups reduces the writing time by a factor of 15 and the long‐term stability of the gratings is retained. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Poly(ethylene terephthalate)/copoly(succinic anhydride/ethylene oxide) copolymers, (PET/PES copolymers) were synthesized by the transreaction between PET and PES and characterized with GPC, 1H NMR, and DSC. Most of the copolymers obtained were random copolymers. The films cast of these copolymers were transparent. The thermal, mechanical properties, and biodegradability of the copolymers obtained were studied with respect to the composition and lengths of aliphatic and aromatic units in the copolymers. In the copolymers having high PET content, the melting points, due to the PET segment, were observed by DSC measurement, although the fusion heats of the copolymers were small. The enzymatic hydrolyzability by a lipase from Rhizopus arrhizus and biodegradability by activated sludge of the copolymers decreased with an increase in PET content. When the length of succinic acid unit in the copolymer was below 2, the hydrolyzability of the copolymers decreased considerably. The tensile strengths of the cast films prepared from the copolymers synthesized by the transreaction increased with an increase in PET content, whereas, the elongations at break decreased. Their tensile strengths were half, and the elongations were double compared to those of PET homopolymer film. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci A: Polym Chem 38: 4478–4489, 2000  相似文献

Random copolymers of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) and poly(ethylene 2,6-naphthalate) (PEN) were synthesized by melt condensation. In a series of thin, solvent cast films of varying PEN content, acetone diffusivity and solubility were determined at 35°C and an acetone pressure of 5.4 cm Hg. The kinetics of acetone sorption in the copolymer films are well described by a Fickian model. Both solubility and diffusivity decrease with increasing PEN content. The acetone diffusion coefficient decreases 93% from PET to PET/85PEN, a copolymer in which 85 weight percent of the dimethyl terephthalate in PET has been replace by dimethyl naphthalate 2,6-dicarboxylate. The acetone solubility coefficient in the amorphous regions of the polymer decreases by approximately a factor of two over the same composition range. The glass/rubber transition temperatures of these materials rise monotonically with increasing PEN content. Copolymers containing 20 to 80 wt % PEN are amorphous. Samples with <20% or >80% PEN contain measurable levels of crystallinity. Estimated fractional free volume in the amorphous regions of these samples is lower in the copolymers than in either of the homopolymers. Relative free volume as probed by positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS) decreases systematically with increasing PEN content. Acetone diffusion coefficients correlate well with PALS results. Infrared spectroscopy suggests an increase in the fraction of ethylene glycol units in the trans conformation in the amorphous phase as the concentration of PEN in the copolymer increases. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Novel conjugated copolymers based on 9,9‐dioctylfluorene and bisphenazine (BP) were synthesized by Suzuki polymerization. Energy transfer from the conjugated main chain to the BP moieties was observed. Full energy transfer was achieved when the molar content of the bisphenazine was 20% (20BPPF) in toluene solution. The similar phenomena were observed even for 1% bisphenazine content copolymer (1BPPF) in film. The lowest occupied molecular orbital (LUMO) energy levels (?3.06 eV) of the copolymers were lower than that of the polyfluorene homopolymer (PFO; ?2.65 eV), indicating that the introduction of the BP unit was benefit to electron injection. Single‐layer electroluminescent devices (ITO/PEDOT:PSS/polymer/LiF/Al) were fabricated to investigate their electroluminescence (EL) performances. The maximum brightness and current efficiency of all BPPF copolymers surpassed the PFO homopolymer. The best single‐layer device was based on 5BPPF, with a maximum brightness of 1532 cd/m2 and current efficiency of 1.09 cd/A. Much higher efficiency could be achieved for multilayer EL devices of 5BPPF (ITO/PEDOT:PSS/PVK/polymer/TPBI/LiF/Al), which showed a maximum current efficiency of 10.01 cd/A. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Rod–coil amphiphilic diblock copolymers, consisting of oligo(p‐phenylenevinylene) (OPV) as a rod and hydrophobic block and poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) as a coil and hydrophilic block, were synthesized by a convergent method. The aggregation behavior of the block copolymers in a selective solvent (tetrahydrofuran/H2O) was probed with the absorption and emission of the OPV block. With increasing H2O concentration, the absorption maximum was blueshifted, the emission from the molecularly dissolved OPV decreased, and that from the aggregated OPV increased. This indicated that the OPV blocks formed H‐type aggregates in which the OPV blocks aligned in a parallel orientation with one another. The transmission electron microscopy observation revealed that the block copolymers with PEO weight fractions of 41 and 62 wt % formed cylindrical aggregates with a diameter of 6–8 nm and a length of several hundreds nanometers, whereas the block copolymer with 79 wt % PEO formed distorted spherical aggregates with an average diameter of 13 nm. Furthermore, the solubilization of an OPV homooligomer with the block copolymer was studied. When the total polymer concentration was less than 0.1 wt %, the block copolymer solubilized OPV with a 50 mol % concentration. The structure of the aggregates was a cylinder with a relatively large diameter distribution. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 43: 1569–1578, 2005  相似文献

The preparation of a series of novel homopolymers and copolymers containing bisazobenzene chromophores with side‐on structure in the side chains via atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) were presented. UV–vis spectra of the thin films of these polymers under irradiation of 488 nm Ar+ laser suggested that the photoisomerization of the bisazobenzene chromophores happened mainly on one of the two azo groups in the bisazobenzene chromophores with similar probability due to their side‐on structure. Good photoalignment behaviors of these polymers were proved by photoinduced birefringence measurements because side‐on structure permitted the two azo groups in the bisazobenzene chromophores both participated in the trans–cis–trans photoisomerization cycles equally to induce the whole chromophore reorientation. Furthermore, the reorientation axis located at the middle of chromophore decreased the sweep volume during photoalignment. The impetus for this study was to evaluate the photoisomerization and photoalignment process of side‐on bisazobenzene‐containing polymers and to find possible applications in the photosensitive devices. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The solution properties of random and block copolymers based on 2‐ethyl‐2‐oxazoline (EtOx) and 2‐nonyl‐2‐oxazoline (NonOx) were investigated in binary solvent mixtures ranging from pure water to pure ethanol. The solubility phase diagrams for the random and block copolymers revealed solubility (after heating), insolubility, dispersions, micellization as well as lower critical solution temperature (LCST) and upper critical solution temperature behavior. The random and block copolymers containing over 60 mol % pNonOx were found to be solubilized in ethanol upon heating, whereas the dissolution temperature of the block copolymers was found to be much higher than for the random copolymers due to the higher extent of crystallinity. Furthermore, the block copolymer containing 10 mol % pNonOx exhibited a LCST in aqueous solution at 68.7 °C, whereas the LCST for the random copolymer was found to be only 20.8 °C based on the formation of hydrophobic microdomains in the block copolymer. The random copolymer displayed a small increase in LCST up to a solvent mixture of 9 wt % EtOH, whereas further increase of ethanol led to a decrease in LCST, which is probably due to the “water‐breaking” effect causing an increased attraction between ethanol and the hydrophobic part of the copolymer. In addition, the EtOx‐NonOx block copolymers revealed the formation of micelles and dynamic light scattering demonstrated that the micellar size is increasing with increasing the ethanol content due to the enhanced solubility of EtOx. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We report an anionic surfactant approach for size and shape control in polyaniline, polypyrrole, and their polyaniline‐co‐polypyrrole random copolymer nanomaterials. A renewable resource azobenzenesulfonic acid anionic surfactant was developed for template‐assisted synthesis of these classes of nanomaterials. The surfactant exists as 4.3 nm micelle in water and self‐organizes with pyrrole to produce spherical aggregates. The sizes of the spherical aggregates were controlled by water dilution and subsequent oxidation of these templates, produced polypyrrole nanospheres of 0.5 μM to 50 nm dimensions. The anionic surfactant interacts differently with aniline and forms cylindrical aggregates, which exclusively produce nanofibers of ∼180 nm in diameter with length up to 3–5 μM. The template selectivity of surfactant toward aniline and pyrrole was used to tune the nanostructure of the aniline‐pyrrole random copolymers from nanofiber‐to‐nanorod‐to‐nanospheres. Dynamic light scattering technique and electron microscopes were used to study the mechanistic aspects of the template‐assisted polymerization. The four probe conductivity of the copolymers showed a nonlinear trend and the conductivity passes through minimum at 60–80% of pyrrole in the feed. The amphiphilic dopant effectively penetrates into the crystal lattices of the polymer chain and induces high solid state ordering in the homopolymer nanomaterials. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of ABA amphiphilic triblock copolymers possessing polystyrene (PS) central hydrophobic blocks, one group with “short” PS blocks (DP = 54–86) and one with “long” PS blocks (DP = 183–204) were synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization. The outer hydrophilic blocks were various lengths of poly(oligoethylene glycol methyl ether) methacrylate, a comb‐like polymer. The critical aggregation concentrations were recorded for certain block copolymer samples and were found to be in the range circa 10−9 mol L−1 for short PS blocks and circa 10−12 mol L−1 for long PS blocks. Dilute aqueous solutions were analyzed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and demonstrated that the short PS block copolymers formed spherical micelles and the long PS block copolymers formed predominantly spherical micelles with smaller proportions of cylindrical and Y‐branched cylindrical micelles. Dynamic light scattering analysis results agreed with the TEM observations demonstrating variations in micelle size with PS and POEGMA chain length: the hydrodynamic diameters (DH) of the shorter PS block copolymer micelles increased with increasing POEGMA block lengths while maintaining similar PS micellar core diameters (DC); in contrast the values of DH and DC for the longer PS block copolymer micelles decreased. Surface‐pressure isotherms were recorded for two of the samples and these indicated close packing of a short PS block copolymer at the air–water interface. The aggregate solutions were demonstrated to be stable over a 38‐day period with no change in aggregate size or noticeable precipitation. The cloud point temperatures of certain block copolymer aggregate solutions were measured and found to be in the range 76–93 °C; significantly these were ∼11 °C higher in temperature than those of POEGMA homopolymer samples with similar chain lengths. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. ABA-type amphiphilic triblock copolymers composed of poly(ethylene glycol)s (PEGs) with different number-average molecular weights as the hydrophilic blocks (B) and poly{6-[4-(4-ethoxyphenylazo)phenoxy]hexyl methacrylate} (PA6C) as the hydrophobic blocks (A) were prepared via atom transfer radical polymerization. These copolymers were prepared from bromo-terminated macroinitiators based on PEG6000, PEG2000, and PEG600, with CuBr/N,N,N,N,N″-pentamethyldiethylenetriamine as the catalytic system, at 85 °C in anisole. The block copolymers were characterized with 1H NMR spectroscopy and gel permeation chromatography. Differential scanning calorimetry measurements were performed to reveal the phase segregation. In contrast to those polymers with similar compositions and structures in previous reports, these amphiphilic copolymers exhibited unusual liquid-crystalline properties over a wide temperature range, being stable even at room temperature. These copolymers showed photoresponsive isomerization under the irradiation of UV–vis light both in THF solutions and in solid films. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
