Binary melt‐blended mixtures of two aryl ether ketone polymers (i.e., a new poly(aryl ether ketone) (code name PK99) and poly(ether ether ketone) (PEEK), have been studied. Polymer miscibility in glassy amorphous (or melt) domains has been demonstrated for the binary blend comprising of two aryl‐ether‐ketone‐type semicrystalline polymers. Composition‐dependent, single Tg was observed within full composition range in the PK99/PEEK blends, and the narrow Tg breadth also suggests that the scale of mixing was fine and uniform. To better resolve any possible overlapping Tg's, physical aging was imposed on a comparison set of blend samples for the purpose of improving detectability of overlapped multiple transitions if existing. The result still showed one single Tg. The relative sharp Tg and lack of cloud point transition suggest that the scale of molecular intermixing is good. Phase homogeneity was further confirmed using optical and scanning electron microscopy. The X‐ray diffractograms suggest that isomorphism does not exist in the PK99/PEEK blends and that the crystal forms of the respective polymers remain distinct and unchanged by the miscibility in the amorphous region. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. In this work, novel star‐hyperbranched block copolymers containing four polystyrene arms and hyperbranched polyglycidol at the end of each arm (sPS‐b‐HPG) have been synthesized. The polystyrene arms were prepared through atom transfer radical polymerization of styrene starting from a four‐arm initiator. The hydroxyl‐terminated PS star polymers served as precursors for the cationic ring‐opening polymerization of glycidol using BF3·OEt2 as the catalyst. The chemical structures of these block copolymers were characterized by using 1H and 13C NMR. DSC analysis indicated that the star‐hyperbranched block copolymers exhibited two distinct glass transition temperatures corresponding to the linear PS and the HPG segments, respectively. The addition of LiClO4 increased the Tg of HPG segments at low concentrations, however, decreased the Tg at high concentrations. The Tg of PS segments was not affected by the addition of salts at all. Furthermore, the interaction of sPS‐b‐HPG with LiBr was studied by using viscosity analysis based on the Jones–Dole equation. The star‐like PS core strengthened the interaction of sPS‐b‐HPG with Li ions that could facile the inhomogeneous distribution of Li cations and anions in different phases, which is important in polymeric electrolytes for lithium chemical power sources. The ionic conductivity of one sPS‐b‐HPG/LiClO4 electrolyte was measured to be higher than that of HPG/LiClO4 electrolyte. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The molecular relaxation processes and structure of isotactic polystyrene (iPS) films were investigated with real‐time dielectric spectroscopy and simultaneous wide‐ and small‐angle X‐ray scattering. The purpose of this work was to explore the restrictions imposed on molecular mobility in the vicinity of the α relaxation (glass transition) for crystallized iPS. Isothermal cold crystallization at temperatures of Tc = 140 or 170 °C resulted in a sigmoidal increase of crystallinity with crystallization time. The glass‐transition temperature (Tg), determined calorimetrically, exhibited almost no increase during the first stage of crystal growth before impingement of spherulites. After impingement, the calorimetric Tg increased, suggesting that confinement effects occur in the latter stages of crystallization. For well‐crystallized samples, the radius of the cooperativity region decreased substantially as compared with the purely amorphous sample but was always smaller than the layer thickness of the mobile amorphous fraction. Dielectric experiments directly probed changes in the amorphous dipole mobility. The real‐time dielectric data were fitted to a Havriliak–Negami model, and the time dependence of the parameters describing the distribution of relaxation times and dielectric strength was obtained. The central dipolar relaxation time showed little variation before spherulite impingement but increased sharply during the second stage of crystal growth as confinement occurred. Vogel–Fulcher–Tammann analysis demonstrated that the dielectric reference temperature, corresponding to the onset of calorimetric Tg, did not vary for well‐crystallized samples. This observation agreed with a model in which constraints affect primarily the modes having longer relaxation times and thus broaden the glass‐transition relaxation process on the higher temperature side. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A new series of highly phenyl‐substituted polyfluorene derivatives were synthesized and characterized. The resulting polymers were amorphous and showed excellent solubility in common organic solvents, such as chloroform, tetrahydrofuran, xylene, toluene, chlorobenzene, and so forth. All possessed satisfied thermal stability with glass‐transition temperatures (Tg's) in the range of 79–115 °C. They emitted blue light with photoluminescent (PL) maximum peaks at about 408–412 nm in thin films. The PL efficiencies of the polymer films were measured around 30–33%. The highly phenylated pendants improved the Tg of polyfluorene without forming defects in the polymers and reduced their tendency to form aggregate/excimers. Polymer light‐emitting diodes were fabricated from these polymers with the configuration of indium tin oxide/polyethylenedioxythiophene:polystyrene sulfonic acid/polymer/Ba/Al, which emitted bright blue light with maximum peaks at 418–420 nm. The maximum external quantum efficiencies of these devices were 0.41–0.6%. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 42: 2985–2993, 2004  相似文献

We report a study on the interphase evolution in a system composed by three polymeric components with markedly different mobility distributed between two layers. One of the layers is a low‐Tg blend containing a low molecular weight polystyrene (PS) as a plasticizer (low‐M PS) and PS chains with much higher molecular weight (high‐M PS). The counterpart is a high‐Tg layer composed by polyphenylene oxide. The system was annealed at several temperatures between Tg of the polymer layers and the subsequent interphase development probed by optical sectioning with confocal Raman microspectroscopy. The profiles obtained revealed the existence of two diffusion fronts that advance in opposite directions, both showing a similar response with time and temperature. These fronts act as well‐defined boundaries that structure the interphase into three well‐defined regions with almost constant PS volume fraction. We discuss this particular phenomenology proposing a simple diffusion model that describes the main interphase features. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A combination of iridium‐catalyzed C H activation/borylation and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) was used to generate polar graft copolymers of syndiotactic polystyrene (sPS). The borylation at aromatic C H bonds of sPS and subsequent oxidation of boronate ester proceeded without negatively affecting the molecular weight properties and the tacticity of sPS. A macroinitiator suitable for ATRP could be synthesized by the esterification of 2‐bromo‐2‐methylpropionyl bromide and hydroxy‐functionalized sPS. The graft polymerizations of methyl methacrylate and tert‐butyl acrylate from the macroinitiator using ATRP afforded polar block grafted sPS materials, syndiotactic polystyrene‐graft‐poly(methyl methacrylate) (sPS‐g‐PMMA) and syndiotactic polystyrene‐graft‐poly(tert‐butyl acrylate) (sPS‐g‐PtBA). The latter was hydrolyzed to yield an amphiphilic graft copolymer, syndiotactic polystyrene‐graft‐poly(acrylic acid) (sPS‐g‐PAA). The structures of the copolymers were characterized by NMR and FTIR spectroscopies. Size exclusion chromatography and 1H NMR spectroscopy were used to study any changes in the molecular weight properties from the parent polymer. A decrease in the hydrophobicity of the graft copolymers was confirmed by water contact angle measurements. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 47: 6655–6667, 2009  相似文献

This work examined the effect of the pre‐melting temperature (Tmax) on the thermal properties and crystalline structure of four miscible syndiotactic polystyrene (sPS)‐based blends containing 80 wt % sPS. The counterparts for sPS included a high‐molecular‐weight atactic polystyrene [aPS(H)], a medium‐molecular‐weight atactic polystyrene [aPS(M)], a low‐molecular‐weight atactic polystyrene [aPS(L)], and a low‐molecular‐weight poly(styrene‐co‐α‐methyl styrene) [P(S‐co‐αMS)]. According to differential scanning calorimetry measurements, upon nonisothermal melt crystallization, the crystallization of sPS shifted to lower temperatures in the blends, and the shift followed this order of counterpart addition: P(S‐co‐αMS) > aPS(L) > aPS(M) > aPS(H). The change in Tmax (from 285 to 315 °C) influenced the crystallization of sPS in the blends to different degrees, depending on the counterpart's molecular weight and cooling rate. The change in Tmax also affected the complex melting behaviors of pure sPS and an sPS/aPS(H) blend, but it affected those of the other blends to a lesser extent. Microscopy investigations demonstrated that changing Tmax slightly affected the blends' crystalline morphology, but it apparently altered that of pure sPS. Furthermore, the X‐ray diffraction results revealed that the α‐form sPS crystal content in the blends generally decreased with an increase in Tmax, and it decreased with a decrease in the cooling rate as well. The blends showed a lower α‐form content than pure sPS; a counterpart of a lower molecular weight more effectively reduced the formation of α‐form crystals. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We have investigated the effect of sample preparation on the glass‐transition temperature (Tg) of thin films of polystyrene (PS). By preparing and measuring the glass‐transition temperature Tg of multilayered polymer films, we are able to assess the contribution of the spincoating process to the reduced Tg values often reported for thin PS films. We find that it is possible to determine a Tg even on the first heating cycle, and that by the third heating cycle (a total annealing time of 15 min at T = 393 K) the Tg value has reached a steady state. By comparing multilayered versus single layered films we find that the whole Tg depends only on the total film thickness, and not on the thickness of the individual layers. These results strongly suggest that the spincasting process does not contribute significantly to Tg reductions in thin polymer films. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Even far above the glass transition temperature, the amorphous phase in semicrystalline polymers is known to be constrained by crystals and less mobile than a pure amorphous polymer close to its equilibrium rubbery state. The aim of this paper devoted to Polyamide 11 was to investigate the existence and significance of a relaxed state in the amorphous phase of a semicrystalline polymer far above Tg. It focuses on the high temperatures, low strain‐rates, and small deformation ranges. A nonstrain‐rate dependent tensile curve (called “asymptotic curve”) was evidenced below a critical strain‐rate, consistently with reaching a fully relaxed state of the rubbery amorphous phase. Nevertheless, paradoxical mechanical features were observed at the same time (nonstrain‐rate dependent but hysteretic unloading, relaxation, and creep involving same strain‐rates as the asymptotic loading regime). Micromechanisms (orientation of primary crystals, creation of local hexagonal arrangements, orientation, and relaxation of the amorphous phase) were analyzed from DSC and X‐ray experiments. It suggested distinct amorphous and crystalline contributions depending on the loading path and therefore highlighted paradox of the mechanical behavior. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. X‐ray diffraction methods and differential scanning calorimetry thermal analysis have been used to investigate the structural changes of syndiotactic polystyrene (sPS)/clay nanocomposites. sPS/clay nanocomposites have been prepared by the mixing of sPS polymer solutions with organically modified montmorillonite. X‐ray diffraction data and differential scanning calorimetry results indicate that the dominating crystal forms and their relative fractions in sPS and sPS/clay nanocomposites are different for various premelting temperatures (Tmax's). Higher Tmax's favor the formation of the thermodynamically more stable β‐crystalline form, and its relative fraction has been obtained from the X‐ray diffraction data in the range of 11.5–13°. The intensity of the X‐ray diffraction data in the range of 11.5–13° decreases as the thickness of sPS/clay nanocomposites decreases from 150 to 20 μm. At the same time, the intensity of the X‐ray data in the range of 6–7° becomes sharper as the thickness of sPS/clay nanocomposites decreases. The calculation ratio based on the peak intensities at 6.2 and 6.8° for sPS/clay nanocomposites of equal thickness and crystallinity in the pure β and α forms has also been determined in this study. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Covalent fixed multicyclic polystyrene conformers were synthesized from inconvertible polystyrene conformers based on ptert‐butylthiacalix[4]arene by azidation and subsequent click coupling. Selective 1D NOESY analyses confirmed that the spatial structures of star polystyrene precursors and multicyclic polystyrenes were preserved during the azidation and click coupling processes. The conformation of star polymers affected degree of decrease in the hydrodynamic volume after cyclization but had little effect on glass transition behavior. The rigid core of star polymer increased the Tg but in the case of multicyclic polymer, this influence of core structure was reduced. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. Diffusion of gases in polymers below the glass transition temperature, Tg, is strongly modulated by local chain dynamics. For this reason, an analysis of pulsed field gradient (PFG) nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) diffusion measurements considering the viscoelastic behavior of polymers is proposed. Carbon‐13 PFG NMR measurements of [13C]O2 diffusion in polymer films at 298 K are performed. Data obtained in polymers with Tg above (polycarbonate) and below (polyethylene) the temperature set for diffusion measurements are analyzed with a stretched exponential. The results show that the distribution of diffusion coefficients in amorphous phases below Tg is wider than that above it. Moreover, from a PFG NMR perspective, full randomization of the dynamic processes in polymers below Tg requires long diffusion times, which suggests fluctuations of local chain density on a macroscopic scale may occur. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The old controversial idea of structures in molten amorphous polymers is being accepted with theoretical and experimental evidence. Wool's twinkling fractal theory of the glass transition and recent atomic force micrographs are convincing proof of the dynamic, solid aggregate presence below and above Tg. This article offers detailed analysis of the experimental data from high‐pressure dilatometry, as well as from the oscillatory shear tests in the glassy and the molten state of polystyrenes. The results indicate the presence of a transient structure at T > Tg; transient as it depends on the structure of the vitreous polymer and the rate of heating it across Tg. Thus, molten polymer is not always at the thermodynamic equilibrium. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys 49: 1369–1380, 2011  相似文献

The crystallization behavior of miscible syndiotactic polystyrene (sPS) and atactic polystyrene (aPS) blends with different sPS/aPS weight ratios was investigated in supercritical CO2 by using Fourier‐transform infrared spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, and wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction. Supercritical CO2 and aPS exhibited different effects on the conformational change of sPS and competed with each other. Increasing the content of amorphous aPS in the blends made its effect on the conformational change of sPS gradually surpass that of supercritical CO2. Supercritical CO2 favored the formation of the helical conformation of sPS in lower temperature range and the all trans planar conformation in higher temperature range, instead of forming the latter one only in higher temperature range in ambient atmosphere. However, increasing aPS content in the blends pushed the range for forming the helical conformation to lower temperature and made the all trans planar conformation dominant in aPS/sPS 25/75 blend after treating in supercritical CO2 above 60 °C. The all trans planar zigzag conformation was more favorable than the helical conformation after mixing aPS in sPS in supercritical CO2. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A self‐polymerizable quinoxaline monomer (A‐B) has been synthesized and polymerized via aromatic nucleophilic substitution reactions. An isomeric mixture of self‐polymerizable quinoxaline monomers—2‐(4‐hydroxyphenyl)‐3‐phenyl‐6‐fluoroquinoxaline and 3‐(4‐hydroxyphenyl)‐2‐phenyl‐6‐fluoroquinoxaline—was polymerized in N‐methyl‐2‐pyrrolidinone (NMP) to afford high molecular weight polyphenylquinoxaline (PPQ) with intrinsic viscosities up to 1.91 dL/g and a glass‐transition temperature (Tg) of 251 °C. A series of comonomers was polymerized with A‐B to form PPQ/polysulfone (PS), PPQ/polyetherether ketone (PEEK), and PPQ/polyethersulfone (PES) copolymers. The copolymers readily obtained high intrinsic viscosities when fluorine was displaced in NMP under reflux. However, single‐electron transfer (SET) side reactions, which limit molecular weight, played a more dominant role when chlorine was displaced instead of fluorine. SET side reactions were minimized in the synthesis of PPQ/PS copolymers through mild polymerization conditions in NMP for longer polymerization times. Thus, the Tg's of PES (Tg = 220 °C), PEEK (Tg = 145 °C), and PS (Tg = 195 °C) were raised through the incorporation of quinoxaline units into the polymer. Copolymers with high intrinsic viscosities resulted in all cases, except in the case of PPQ/PEEK copolymers when 4,4′‐dichlorobenzophenone was the comonomer. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The relationship between semicrystalline morphology and glass transition temperature has been investigated for solvent-crystallized poly(ether ether ketone) (PEEK) and poly(ether ketone ketone) (PEKK). Solvent-crystallized specimens of both PEEK and PEKK displayed a sizeable positive offset in Tg compared to quenched amorphous specimens as well as thermally crystallized specimens of comparable bulk crystallinity; the offset in Tg for the crystallized samples reflected the degree of constraint imposed on the amorphous segments by the crystallites. Small-angle X-ray scattering studies revealed markedly smaller crystal long periods (d) for the solvent-crystallized specimens compared to samples prepared by direct cold crystallization. The strong inverse correlation observed between Tg and interlamellar amorphous thickness (lA) based on a simple two-phase model was in excellent agreement with data reported previously for PEEK, and indicated the existence of a unique relationship between glass transition temperature and morphology in these poly(aryl ether ketones) over a wider range of sample preparation history and lamellar structure than was previously reported. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. We measured the cloud-point curves of eight-arm star polystyrene (sPS) in methylcyclohexane (MCH) for polymer samples of three total molecular masses [weight-average molecular weight (Mw) × 10−3 = 77, 215, or 268]. We found a downward shift of 5–15 K in the critical temperature (Tc) of the star polymer solutions with respect to linear polystyrene (PS) solutions of the same Mw. The shift in Tc became smaller as Mw increased. The critical volume fraction for eight-arm sPS in MCH was equal within experimental uncertainty (10–40%) to that of linear PS in MCH. For sPS of Mw = 77,000 in MCH, we studied the mass density (ρ) as a function of temperature (T). As for linear polymers in solution, the difference in ρ between coexisting phases (Δρ) could be described over t = (TcT)/Tc for 1.1 × 10−4 < t < 4.7 × 10−3 with the Ising value of the exponent β in the expression Δρ = B tβ. Both ρ(T) above Tc and the average value of ρ below Tc were linear functions of temperature; no singular corrections were observed. The measurements of the shear viscosity (η) near Tc for sPS (Mw = 74,000) in MCH indicated a strong critical anomaly in η, but the data were not precise enough for a quantitative analysis. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We have established time–temperature transformation and continuous-heating transformation diagrams for poly(ether–ether–ketone) (PEEK) and PEEK/poly(ether–imide) (PEI) blends, in order to analyze the effects of relaxation control on crystallization. Similar diagrams are widely used in the field of thermosetting resins. Upon crystallization, the glass transition temperature (Tg) of PEEK and PEEK/PEI blends is found to increase significantly. In the case of PEEK, the shift of the α-relaxation is due to the progressive constraining of amorphous regions by nearby crystals. This phenomenon results in the isothermal vitrification of PEEK during its latest crystallization stages for crystallization temperatures near the initial Tg of PEEK. However, vitrification/devitrification effects are found to be of minor importance for anisothermal crystallization, above 0.1°C/min heating rate. In the case of PEEK/PEI blends, amorphous regions are progressively enriched in PEI upon PEEK crystallization. This promotes a shift of the α-relaxation of these regions to higher temperatures, with a consequent vitrification of the material when crystallized below the Tg of PEI. The data obtained for the blends in anisothermal regimes allow one to detect a region in the (temperature/heating rate) plane where crystallization proceeds in the continuously close proximity of the glass transition (dynamic vitrification). These experimental findings are in agreement with simple simulations based on a modified Avrami model coupled with the Fox equation. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. We have designed and synthesized rod–coil–rod triblock copolymers of controlled molecular weight by two‐step nitroxide‐mediated radical polymerization, where the rod part consists of “mesogen‐jacketed liquid crystalline polymer” (MJLCP). The MJLCP segment examined in our studies is poly{2,5‐bis[(4‐methoxyphenyl)oxycarbonyl]styrene} (MPCS) while the coil part is polyisoprene (PI). Characterization of the triblock copolymers by GPC, 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopies, TGA, DSC confirmed that the triblock copolymers were comprised of microphase‐separated low Tg amorphous PI and high Tg PMPCS blocks. Analysis of POM and 1D, 2D‐WAXD demonstrated that the triblock copolymers formed nematic liquid crystal phase. Morphological studies using TEM indicated the sample formed lamellar structure. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 45: 5949–5956, 2007  相似文献

The calorimetric glass‐transition temperature (Tg) and transition width were measured over the full composition range for solvent–solvent mixtures of o‐terphenyl with tricresyl phosphate and with dibutyl phthalate and for polymer–solvent mixtures of polystyrene with three dialkyl phthalates. Tg shifted smoothly to higher temperatures with the addition of the component with the higher Tg for both sets of solvent–solvent mixtures. The superposition of the differential scanning calorimetry traces showed almost no composition dependence for the width of the transition region. In contrast, the composition dependence of Tg in polymer–solvent mixtures was different at high and low polymer concentrations, and two distinct Tg's were observed at intermediate compositions. These results were interpreted in terms of the local length scale and associated local composition variations affecting Tg. The possible implications of these results for the dynamics of miscible polymer blends were examined. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys 42: 1155–1163, 2004  相似文献
