The pseudo‐spectral Legendre–Galerkin method (PS‐LGM) is applied to solve a nonlinear partial integro‐differential equation arising in population dynamics. This equation is a competition model in which similar individuals are competing for the same resources. It is a kind of reaction–diffusion equation with integral term corresponding to nonlocal consumption of resources. The proposed method is based on the Legendre–Galerkin formulation for the linear terms and interpolation operator at the Chebyshev–Gauss–Lobatto (CGL) points for the nonlinear terms. Also, the integral term, which is a kind of convolution, is directly computed by a fast and accurate method based on CGL interpolation operator, and thus, the use of any quadrature formula in its computation is avoided. The main difference of the PS‐LGM presented in the current paper with the classic LGM is in treating the nonlinear terms and imposing boundary conditions. Indeed, in the PS‐LGM, the nonlinear terms are efficiently handled using the CGL points, and also the boundary conditions are imposed strongly as collocation methods. Combination of the PS‐LGM with a semi‐implicit time integration method such as second‐order backward differentiation formula and Adams‐Bashforth method leads to reducing the complexity of computations and obtaining a linear algebraic system of equations with banded coefficient matrix. The desired equation is considered on one and two‐dimensional spatial domains. Efficiency, accuracy, and convergence of the proposed method are demonstrated numerically in both cases. A Fourier‐Galerkin spectral method is proposed and used to analyze a system of quasilinear partial differential equations governing the drainage of liquids of the Oldroyd four‐constant type. It is shown that, Fourier‐Galerkin approximations are convergent with spectral accuracy. An efficient and accurate algorithm based on the Fourier‐Galerkin approximations to the system of quasilinear partial differential equations are developed and implemented. Numerical results indicating the high accuracy and effectiveness of this algorithm are presented. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Numer Methods Partial Differential Eq 28: 492–505, 2012  相似文献

In the paper, we apply the generalized polynomial chaos expansion and spectral methods to the Burgers equation with a random perturbation on its left boundary condition. Firstly, the stochastic Galerkin method combined with the Legendre–Galerkin Chebyshev collocation scheme is adopted, which means that the original equation is transformed to the deterministic nonlinear equations by the stochastic Galerkin method and the Legendre–Galerkin Chebyshev collocation scheme is used to deal with the resulting nonlinear equations. Secondly, the stochastic Legendre–Galerkin Chebyshev collocation scheme is developed for solving the stochastic Burgers equation; that is, the stochastic Legendre–Galerkin method is used to discrete the random variable meanwhile the nonlinear term is interpolated through the Chebyshev–Gauss points. Then a set of deterministic linear equations can be obtained, which is in contrast to the other existing methods for the stochastic Burgers equation. The mean square convergence of the former method is analyzed. Numerical experiments are performed to show the effectiveness of our two methods. Both methods provide alternative approaches to deal with the stochastic differential equations with nonlinear terms.  相似文献

In this article, the Ritz‐Galerkin method in Bernstein polynomial basis is implemented to give an approximate solution of a hyperbolic partial differential equation with an integral condition. We will deal here with a type of nonlocal boundary value problem, that is, the solution of a hyperbolic partial differential equation with a nonlocal boundary specification. The nonlocal conditions arise mainly when the data on the boundary cannot be measured directly. The properties of Bernstein polynomial and Ritz‐Galerkin method are first presented, then Ritz‐Galerkin method is used to reduce the given hyperbolic partial differential equation to the solution of algebraic equations. Illustrative examples are included to demonstrate the validity and applicability of the technique presented in this article. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The nonlinear Galerkin methods are numerical schemes for evolutionary partial differential equations based on the theory of inertial manifolds and approximate inertial manifolds. In this paper, we consider the flow between two concentric rotating spheres, and combine the Legendre-Galerkin spectral methods in Part I together with the nonlinear Galerkin method, then construct the full discrete nonlinear Legendre-Galerkin spectral scheme, and derive the stability conditions and its error estimate.  相似文献

The paper is devoted to the investigation of a parabolic partial differential equation with non‐local and time‐dependent boundary conditions arising from ductal carcinoma in situ model. Approximation solution of the present problem is implemented by the Ritz–Galerkin method, which is a first attempt at tackling parabolic equation with such non‐classical boundary conditions. In the process of dealing with the difficulty caused by integral term in non‐local boundary condition, we use a trick of introducing the transition function G(x,t) to convert non‐local boundary to another non‐classical boundary, which can be handled with the Ritz–Galerkin method. Illustrative examples are included to demonstrate the validity and applicability of the technique in this paper. Copyright © 2015 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

This paper investigates bifurcation and chaos in transverse motion of axially accelerating viscoelastic beams. The Kelvin model is used to describe the viscoelastic property of the beam material, and the Lagrangian strain is used to account for geometric nonlinearity due to small but finite stretching of the beam. The transverse motion is governed by a nonlinear partial-differential equation. The Galerkin method is applied to truncate the partial-differential equation into a set of ordinary differential equations. When the Galerkin truncation is based on the eigenfunctions of a linear non-translating beam subjected to the same boundary constraints, a computation technique is proposed by regrouping nonlinear terms. The scheme can be easily implemented in practical computations. When the transport speed is assumed to be a constant mean speed with small harmonic variations, the Poincaré map is numerically calculated based on 4-term Galerkin truncation to identify dynamical behaviors. The bifurcation diagrams are present for varying one of the following parameter: the axial speed fluctuation amplitude, the mean axial speed and the beam viscosity coefficient, while other parameters are unchanged.  相似文献

We consider the Cauchy problem for the Navier-Stokes system of equations in a three-dimensional space rotating uniformly about the vertical axis with the periodicity condition with respect to the spatial variables. Studying this problem is based on expanding given and sought vector functions in Fourier series in terms of the eigenfunctions of the curl and Stokes operators. Using the Galerkin method, we reduce the problem to the Cauchy problem for the system of ordinary differential equations, which has a simple explicit form in the basis under consideration. Its linear part is diagonal, which allows writing explicit solutions of the linear Stokes-Sobolev system, to which fluid flows with a nonzero vorticity correspond. Based on the study of the nonlinear interaction of vortical flows, we find an approach that we can use to obtain families of explicit global solutions of the nonlinear problem.  相似文献

In this paper, a kind of partial upwind finite element scheme is studied for twodimensional nonlinear convection-diffusion problem. Nonlinear convection term approximated by partial upwind finite element method considered over a mesh dual to the triangular grid, whereas the nonlinear diffusion term approximated by Galerkin method. A linearized partial upwind finite element scheme and a higher order accuracy scheme are constructed respectively. It is shown that the numerical solutions of these schemes preserve discrete maximum principle. The convergence and error estimate are also given for both schemes under some assumptions. The numerical results show that these partial upwind finite element scheme are feasible and accurate.  相似文献

The fully Sinc‐Galerkin method is developed for a family of complex‐valued partial differential equations with time‐dependent boundary conditions. The Sinc‐Galerkin discrete system is formulated and represented by a Kronecker product form of those equations. The numerical solution is efficiently calculated and the method exhibits an exponential convergence rate. Several examples, some with a real‐valued solution and some with a complex‐valued solution, are used to demonstrate the performance of this method. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This paper presents a comprehensive comparison study between the generalized differential quadrature (GDQ) and the well-known global Galerkin method for analysis of pull-in behavior of nonlinear micro-electro-mechanical coupled systems. The nonlinear governing integro-differential equation for double clamped MEMS devices which was derived using variational principle by the authors [Sadeghian H, Rezazadeh G, Osterberg PM. Application of the generalized differential quadrature method to the study of pull-in phenomena of MEMS switches. J Microelectromech Syst 2007;16(6):1334–40] is discretized by applying Galerkin and GDQ methods. The divergence instability or pull-in phenomenon is analyzed. Obtained results are compared with the results of the pervious works. The Galerkin method is implemented with effect of number of used shape functions. Different types of trail functions on calculated pull-in voltage are examined.Furthermore, compare to one term and two terms truncation Galerkin method, it is observed that the GDQ with small number of grid points (non-uniform) performs accurate results for nonlinear micro-electro-mechanical coupled behavior which requires a large number of grid points at high-order approximation.  相似文献

In this work, we use the spectral Galerkin method to prove the existence of a pathwise unique mild solution of a fractional stochastic partial differential equation of Burgers type in a Hölder space. We get the temporal regularity, and using a combination of Galerkin and exponential‐Euler methods, we obtain a full discretization scheme of the solution. Moreover, we calculate the rates of convergence for both approximations (Galerkin and full discretization) with respect to time and to space.

We consider nonlinear semi-discrete problems that derive by reaction diffusion systems of partial differential equations, when finite difference methods or Faedo Galerkin methods are used for spatial discretization. The aim of this article is to give sufficient conditions for the contractivity of the θ-method, in a norm generated by a positive diagonal matrix G. We show that the numerical contractivity property is obtained if some matrices, constructed by means of the Jacobian matrix of nonlinear term, are M-matrices. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

In this paper, we further develop the local discontinuous Galerkin method to solve three classes of nonlinear wave equations formulated by the general KdV-Burgers type equations, the general fifth-order KdV type equations and the fully nonlinear K(n, n, n) equations, and prove their stability for these general classes of nonlinear equations. The schemes we present extend the previous work of Yan and Shu [30, 31] and of Levy, Shu and Yan [24] on local discontinuous Galerkin method solving partial differential equations with higher spatial derivatives. Numerical examples for nonlinear problems are shown to illustrate the accuracy and capability of the methods. The numerical experiments include stationary solitons, soliton interactions and oscillatory solitary wave solutions. The numerical experiments also include the compacton solutions of a generalized fifthorder KdV equation in which the highest order derivative term is nonlinear and the fully nonlinear K (n, n, n) equations.  相似文献

The incompressible miscible displacement problem in porous media is modeled by a coupled system of two nonlinear partial differential equations, the pressure‐velocity equation and the concentration equation. In this article, we present a mixed finite volume element method for the approximation of pressure‐velocity equation and a discontinuous Galerkin finite volume element method for the concentration equation. A priori error estimates in L(L2) are derived for velocity, pressure, and concentration. Numerical results are presented to substantiate the validity of the theoretical results. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Numer Methods Partial Differential Eq, 2012  相似文献

In the spectral Petrov‐Galerkin methods, the trial and test functions are required to satisfy particular boundary conditions. By a suitable linear combination of orthogonal polynomials, a basis, that is called the modal basis, is obtained. In this paper, we extend this idea to the nonorthogonal dual Bernstein polynomials. A compact general formula is derived for the modal basis functions based on dual Bernstein polynomials. Then, we present a Bernstein‐spectral Petrov‐Galerkin method for a class of time fractional partial differential equations with Caputo derivative. It is shown that the method leads to banded sparse linear systems for problems with constant coefficients. Some numerical examples are provided to show the efficiency and the spectral accuracy of the method.  相似文献

Using this method, we obtain exact solutions for these equations. The method is straightforward and concise, and its applications are promising. The three-dimensional nonlinear hydrodynamic equations which describe wind induced flow in a homogeneous sea are transformed from Cartesian coordinates into sigma coordinates. The solution of these equations in the horizontal is accomplished using a standard finite difference grid and established finite difference methods. The accuracy and computational efficiency, in terms of both computer time and main memory requirements, of using either the Galerkin method or a finite difference grid through the vertical is considered. Calculations, using the same number of functions in the Galerkin method as grid bases through the vertical shows that the Galerkin method has superior accuracy over the grid box method. Hence, for a given accuracy a smaller number of functions than grid boxes may be used, with associated saving in computational resources. For the case in which the vertical variation of eddy viscosity is fixed, an eigenvalue problem can be solved to yield a set of eigenfunctions. Using these eigenfunctions as a basis set with the Galerkin approach, a Galerkin-eigenfunction method is developed. Calculations show that the Galerkin-eigenfunction technique is accurate and in a linear model is clearly computationally more economic than the use of grid boxes through the vertical.  相似文献

In this paper, a class of high-order nonlinear Galerkin methods are provided. Moreover, convergence results with high-order spectral accuracy are derived for the schemes introduced.  相似文献
