Supramolecular inclusion complexes (ICs) involving polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) capped poly(?‐caprolactone) (PCL) and α‐cyclodextrin (α‐CD) were investigated. POSS‐terminated PCLs with various molecular weights were prepared via the ring‐opening polymerization of ?‐caprolactone (CL) with 3‐hydroxypropylheptaphenyl POSS as an initiator. Because of the presence of the bulky silsesquioxane terminal group, the inclusion complexation between α‐CD and the POSS‐capped PCL was carried out only with a single end of a PCL chain threading inside the cavity of α‐CD, which allowed the evaluation of the effect of the POSS terminal groups on the efficiency of the inclusion complexation. The X‐ray diffraction results indicated that the organic–inorganic ICs had a channel‐type crystalline structure. The stoichiometry of the organic–inorganic ICs was quite dependent on the molecular weights of the POSS‐capped PCLs. With moderate molecular weights of the POSS‐capped PCLs (e.g., Mn =3860 or 9880), the stoichiometry was 1:1 mol/mol (CL unit/α‐CD), which was close to the literature value based on the inclusion complexation of α‐CD with normal linear PCL chains with comparable molecular weights. When the PCL chains were shorter (e.g., for the POSS‐capped PCL of Mn = 1720 or 2490), the efficiency of the inclusion complexation decreased. The decreased efficiency of the inclusion complexation could be attributed to the lower mobility of the bulky POSS group, which restricted the motion of the PCL chain attached to the silsesquioxane cage. This effect was pronounced with the decreasing length of the PCL chains. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 45: 1247–1259, 2007  相似文献

Organic–inorganic hybrid diblock copolymers composed of poly(ε‐caprolactone) and poly(MA POSS) [PCL‐b‐P(MA POSS)] were synthesized via reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer polymerization of 3‐methacryloxypropylheptaphenyl polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (MA POSS) with dithiobenzoate‐terminated poly(ε‐caprolactone) as the macromolecular chain transfer agent. The dithiobenzoate‐terminated poly(ε‐caprolactone) (PCL‐CTA) was synthesized via the atom transfer radical reaction of 2‐bromopropionyl‐terminated PCL with bis(thiobenzoyl)disulfide in the presence of the complex of copper (I) bromide with N,N,N′,N″,N″‐pentamethyldiethylenetriamine. The results of molecular weights and polydispersity indicate that the polymerizations were in a controlled fashion. The organic–inorganic diblock copolymer was incorporated into epoxy to afford the organic–inorganic nanocomposites. The nanostructures of the organic–inorganic composites were investigated by means of transmission electron microscopy and dynamic mechanical thermal analysis. Thermogravimetric analysis shows that the organic–inorganic nanocomposites displayed the increased yields of degradation residues compared to the control epoxy. In the organic–inorganic nanocomposites, the inorganic block [viz., P(MA POSS)] had a tendency to enrich at the surface of the materials and the dewettability of surface for the organic–inorganic nanocomposites were improved in terms of the measurement of surface contact angles. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this report, we have synthesized organic/inorganic hybrid peptide–poly(?‐caprolactone) (PCL) conjugates via ring opening polymerization (ROP) of ?‐caprolactone (CL) in the presence of two sequence defined peptide initiators, namely POSS‐Leu‐Aib‐Leu‐NH2 (POSS: polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane; Leu: Leucine; Aib: α‐aminoisobutyric acid) and OMe‐Leu‐Aib‐Leu‐NH2. Covalent attachment of peptide segments with the PCLs were examined by 1H and 29Si NMR spectroscopy, matrix‐assisted laser desorption/ionization time‐of‐flight mass spectrometry (MALDI‐TOF‐MS) and FTIR spectroscopy. Supramolecular inclusion complexations of synthesized peptide‐PCL conjugates with α‐cyclodextrin (α‐CyD) were studied to understand the effect of POSS/OMe‐peptide moieties at the PCL chain ends. Inclusion complexation of peptide‐PCL conjugates with α‐CyD produced linear polypseudorotaxane, confirmed by 1H NMR, FTIR, powder X‐ray diffraction (PXRD), polarized optical microscopy (POM) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Extent of α‐CyD threading onto the hybrid peptide‐PCL conjugated polymers is less than that of α‐CyD threaded onto the linear PCL. Thus, PCL chains were not fully covered by the host α‐CyD molecules due to the bulky POSS/OMe‐peptide moieties connected with the one edge of the PCL chains. PXRD experiment reveals channel like structures by the synthesized inclusion complexes (ICs). Spherulitic morphologies of POSS/OMe‐peptide‐PCL conjugates were fully destroyed after inclusion complexation with α‐CyD and tiny nanoobjects were produced. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Well‐defined peptide‐poly(ε‐caprolactone) (Pep‐PCL) biohybrids were successfully synthesized by grafting‐from ring‐opening polymerization (ROP) of ε‐caprolactone (CL) using designed amine‐terminated sequence‐defined peptides as macroinitiators. MALDI‐TOF‐MS and 1H NMR analyses confirmed the successful attachment of peptide to the PCL chain. The gel permeation chromatography (GPC) measurement showed that the Pep‐PCL biohybrids with controllable molecular weights and low polydispersities (PDI <1.5) were obtained by this approach. The aggregation of Pep‐PCL hybrid molecules in THF solution resulted in the formation of micro/nanospheres as confirmed through FESEM, TEM, and DLS analyses. The circular dichroism study revealed that the secondary structure of peptide moiety was changed in the peptide‐PCL biohybrids. The crystallization and melting behavior of Pep‐PCL hybrids were somewhat changed compared with that of neat PCL of comparable molecular weight as revealed by DSC and XRD measurements. In Pep‐PCL biohybrids, extinction rings were observed in the PCL spherulites, in contrast with the normal spherulite morphology of the neat PCL. There was a substantial decrease (4–5 folds) in the spherulitic growth rate after the incorporation of peptide moiety at the end of PCL chain as measured by polarizing optical microscopy. Pseudomonas lipase catalyzed enzymatic degradation was studied for Pep‐PCL hybrids and neat PCL. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem, 2012  相似文献

In this contribution, we reported a design of shape memory networks of poly(ε‐caprolactone)s (PCLs) via POSS‐POSS interactions. First, a series of novel organic‐inorganic PCL stars with polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) termini were synthesized via the combination of ring‐opening polymerization of ε‐caprolactone and the copper (I)‐catalyzed cycloaddition of alkynyl with azido groups. It was found that the organic‐inorganic PCL stars significantly displayed shape memory properties with about 100% of recovery. The morphological observation showed that in the organic‐inorganic PCL stars, the POSS cages at the ends of PCL chains were self‐organized into the spherical POSS microdomains with the size of 10 to 20 nm in diameter. The POSS microdomains behaved as the netpoints, resulting in the formation of physically crosslinked networks. The novel physically crosslinked networks endowed the organic‐inorganic nanocomposites with shape memory properties.  相似文献

Novel poly(butylene terephthalate) (PBT)/polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) nanocomposites were synthesized by ring‐opening polymerization of cyclic poly(butylene terephthalate) initiated by functionalized POSS with various feed ratios. The impact of POSS incorporation on melting and crystallization behaviors of PBT/POSS nanocomposites was investigated by means of X‐ray diffraction and differential scanning calorimetry. It was found that the novel organic–inorganic association result in the significant alterations in the melting and crystallization behavior of PBT. Thermal studies confirmed that the incorporation of POSS can enhance the thermal stability of the polymers, and the copolymer glass transition temperature increased with the increasing of POSS macromonomer content. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Well‐defined hetero eight‐shaped copolymers composed of polystyrene (PS) and poly(ε‐caprolactone) (PCL) with controlled molecular weight and narrow molecular weight distribution were successfully synthesized by the combination of ring‐opening polymerization, ATRP, and “click” reaction. The synthetic procedure involves three steps: (1) preparation of a tetrafunctional PS and PCL star copolymer with two PS and two PCL arms using the tetrafunctional initiator bearing two hydroxyl groups and two bromo groups; (2) synthesis of tetrafunctional star copolymer, (α‐acetylene‐PCL)2(ω‐azido‐PS)2, by the transition of terminal hydroxyl and bromo groups to acetylene and azido groups through the reaction with 4‐propargyloxybutanedioyl chloride and NaN3 respectively; (3) intramolecular cyclization reaction to produce the hetero eight‐shaped copolymers using “click” chemistry under high dilution. The 1H NMR, FTIR, and gel permeation chromatography techniques were applied to characterize the chemical structures of the resulted intermediates and the target polymers. Their thermal behavior was investigated by DSC, and their crystallization behaviors of PCL were studied by polarized optical microscopy. The decrease in chain mobility of the eight‐shaped copolymers restricts the crystallization of PCL and the crystallization rate of PCL is slower in comparison with their corresponding star precursors. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The crystallization of block copolymers (BCPs) under homogeneous and heterogeneous nucleation is currently well understood revealing the strong interplay of crystallization in competition to microphase separation. This article reports investigations on synthesis and crystallization processes in weakly interacting supramolecular pseudo‐BCPs, composed of poly(ε‐caprolactone) (PCL) and poly(isobutylene) (PIB) blocks, connected by a specifically interacting hydrogen bond (thymine/2,6‐diaminotriazine). Starting from ring opening polymerization of ε‐caprolactone, the use of “click”‐chemistry enabled the introduction of thymine endgroups onto PCL polymer, thus generating the fully thymine‐substituted pure PCLs ( 1a , 1b ) as judged via NMR and MALDI analysis. Physical mixing of 1a , 1b with a bivalent, bis(2,6‐diaminotriazine)‐containing molecule ( 2 ) generated the bivalent polymers BC1 and BC2 , whereas mixing of 1a or 1b with the 2,6‐diaminotriazine‐substituted PIB ( 3 ) generated the supramolecular pseudo‐BCPs BC3 and BC4 . Thermal investigations (DSC, Avrami analysis) revealed only minor changes in the crystallization behavior of BC1 – BC4 with Avrami exponents close to three, indicative of a confluence of the growing crystals during the crystallization process. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Isothermal crystallization behavior of a new regular polyester constituted by glycolic acid and 4‐hydroxybutyric acid units is studied by means of differential scanning calorimetry and hot‐stage optical microscopy. A wide range of crystallization conditions were experimentally accessible, allowing various morphological features to be observed and accurate estimates made of characteristic growth parameters, including radial growth and nucleation rates. Three‐dimensional spherulitic growth from heterogeneous nuclei is deduced from the Avrami analysis, whereas optical micrographs reveal two different spherulitic textures that agree with the existence of two crystallization regimes. These can be well distinguished from the breaks observed in the Lauritzen and Hoffman plots when the linear crystal growth rate or the overall crystallization rate is considered. Ringed and nonringed spherulites with negative and positive birefringence, respectively, can be obtained depending on crystallization conditions and regimes. The studied polyester shows rather complex melting behavior which is interpreted in terms of a recrystallization process involving the two different kinds of spherulites. This study allows polymorphism to be discounted. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys 45: 2640–2653, 2007  相似文献

A series of well‐defined θ‐shaped copolymers composed of polystyrene (PS) and poly(ε‐caprolactone) (PCL) with controlled molecular weight and narrow molecular weight distribution have been successfully synthesized without any purification procedure by the combination of atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP), ring‐opening polymerization (ROP), and the “click” chemistry. The synthetic process involves two steps: (1) synthesis of AB2 miktoarm star copolymers, which contain one PCL chain terminated with two acetylene groups and two PS chains with two azido groups at their one end, (α,α′‐diacetylene‐PCL) (ω‐azido‐PS)2, by ROP, ATRP, and the terminal group transformation; (2) intramolecular cyclization of AB2 miktoarm star copolymers to produce well‐defined pure θ‐shaped copolymers using “click” chemistry under high dilution. The 1H NMR, FTIR, and gel permeation chromatography techniques were applied to characterize the chemical structures of the resultant intermediates and the target polymers. Their thermal behavior was investigated by DSC. The mobility decrease of PCL chain across PS ring in the theta‐shaped copolymers restricts the crystallization ability of PCL segment. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A simple and facile strategy for the functionalization of commercial poly(ε‐caprolactone) diols (PCLs) with pendant functionalities at the polymer chain termini is described. Well‐defined allyl‐functionalized PCLs with varying numbers of allyl end‐block side‐groups were synthesized by cationic ring‐opening polymerization of allyl glycidyl ether using PCL diols as macroinitiators. Further functionalization of the allyl‐functionalized PCLs was realized via the UV‐initiated radical addition of a furan‐functionalized thiol to the pendant allyl functional groups, showing the suitability for post‐modification of the PCL materials. Changes in polymer structure as a result of varying the number of pendant functional units at the PCL chain termini were demonstrated. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. Inorganic–organic hybrids mediated by hydrogen‐bonding interactions involving silicon oxide network and poly(ε‐caprolactone) (PCL) were prepared via an in situ sol–gel process of tetraethoxysilane in the presence of PCL. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy indicated that there were hydrogen‐bonding interactions between carbonyls of PCL and silanol hydroxyls that were formed by incomplete polycondensation in the sol–gel process. In terms of the frequency shift of the hydroxyl stretching vibration bands, it is concluded that the strength of the interassociation between PCL and silicon oxide networks is weaker than that of the self‐association in the control silica network. The phenomenon of equilibrium melting point depression was observed for the PCL/silica system. The hybridization of PCL with silica network causes a considerable increase in the overall crystallization rate and dramatically influences the mechanism of nucleation and growth of the PCL crystallization. The analysis of isothermal crystallization kinetic data according to the Hoffman‐Lauritzen theory shows that with increasing silica content in the hybrids, the surface energy of extremity surfaces increases dramatically for the hybrids. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In general, the complexation and gelation behavior between biocompatible poly(ε‐caprolactone) (PCL) derivatives and α‐cyclodextrin (α‐CD) is extensively studied in water, but not in organic solvents. In this article, the complexation and gelation behavior between α‐CD and multi‐arm polymer β‐cyclodextrin‐PCL (β‐CD‐PCL) with a unique “jellyfish‐like” structure are thoroughly investigated in organic solvent N,N‐dimethylformamide and a new heat‐induced organogel is obtained. However, PCL linear polymers cannot form organogels under the same condition. The complexation is characterized by rheological measurements, DSC, XRD, and SEM. The SEM images reveal that the complexes between β‐CD‐PCL and α‐CD present a novel topological helix porous structure which is distinctly different from the lamellar structure formed by PCL linear polymers and α‐CD, suggesting the unique “jellyfish‐like” structure of β‐CD‐PCL is crucial for the formation of the organogels. This research may provide insight into constructing new supramolecular organogels and potential for designing new functional biomaterials. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. ε‐caprolactone was polymerized in the presence of neat montmorillonite or organomontmorillonites to obtain a variety of poly(ε‐caprolactone) (PCL)‐based systems loaded with 10 wt % of the silicates. The materials were thoroughly investigated by different X‐ray scattering techniques to determine factors affecting structure of the systems. For one of the nanocomposites it was found that varying the temperature in the range corresponding to crystallization of PCL causes reversible changes in the interlayer distance of the organoclay. Extensive experimental and literature studies on this phenomenon provided clues indicating that this effect might be a result of two‐dimensional ordering of PCL chains inside the galleries of the silicate. Small angle X‐ray scattering and wide angle X‐ray scattering investigation of filaments oriented above melting point of PCL revealed that polymer lamellae were oriented perpendicularly to particles of unmodified silicate, while in PCL/organoclay systems they were found parallel to clay tactoids. Calorimetric and microscopic studies shown that clay particles are effective nucleating agents. In the nanocomposites, PCL crystallized 20‐fold faster than in the neat polymer. The crystallization rate in nanocomposites was also significantly higher than in microcomposite. Further research provided an insight how the presence of the filler affects crystalline fraction and spherulitic structure of the polymer matrix in the investigated systems. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The effects of the polymer concentration and quenching temperature on the phase separation, the membrane morphology and polymer crystallization behavior in a poly(4‐methyl‐1‐pentene) (TPX)‐dioctylsebacate (DOS)‐dimethylphthalate (DMP) system via thermally induced phase separation were studied with a pseudobinary phase diagram, with the weight ratio of DOS:DMP = 1:1. SEM was used to observe the membrane morphology and structure, whereas the TPX crystallization behavior was studied with DSC and WAXD. Liquid‐liquid phase separation occurred, although quenching under the crystallization temperature. As the quenching temperature decreased, the pore size decreased, with better connected pore structure formed. The membranes quenched at 333 and 363 K showed good cellular structures, with an average pore size of about 2.3μm, whereas the pores of the membranes quenched at 393 and 423 K were not well formed, with some lamellar crystals on the inner side. The diluent assisted the mobility of the polymer chain, which improved the polymer crystallization. Dual‐melting‐peak behavior occurred for all the samples studied here. As the quenching temperature increased, the first peak of the melting trace moved to a higher temperature, whereas the second one stayed almost the same. The flexibility of the TPX main chain was restricted by the side groups, which allowed liquid‐liquid phase separation to occur first when quenched below the equilibrium crystallization temperature. This allowed primary and secondary crystallization, which was responsible for the dual‐melting‐peak behavior. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys 45: 153–161, 2007  相似文献

Aminopropylisobutyl polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) was used to prepare a POSS‐containing reversible addition‐fragmentation transfer (RAFT) agent. The POSS‐containing RAFT agent was used in the RAFT polymerization of N‐isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM) to produce tadpole‐shaped organic/inorganic hybrid Poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM). The results show that the POSS‐containing RAFT agent was an effective chain transfer agent in the RAFT polymerization of NIPAM, and the polymerization kinetics were found to be pseudo‐first‐order behavior. The thermal properties of the organic/inorganic hybrid PNIPAM were also characterized by differential scanning calorimetry. The glass transition temperature (Tg) of the tadpole‐shaped inorganic/organic hybrid PNIPAM was enhanced by POSS molecule. The self‐assembly behavior of the tadpole‐shaped inorganic/organic hybrid PNIPAM was investigated by atomic force microscopy and dynamic light scattering. The results show the core‐shell nanostructured micelles with a uniform diameter. The diameter of the micelle increases with the molecular weight of the hybrid PNIPAM. Surprisingly, the micelle of the tadpole‐shaped inorganic/organic hybrid PNIPAM with low molecular weight has a much bigger and more compact core than that with high molecular weight. © Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The isothermal crystallization and subsequent melting process in semicrystalline poly(4‐methyl‐1‐pentene) were investigated via temperature‐dependent small‐ and wide‐angle X‐ray scattering and Flash DSC techniques. In a phase diagram of inversed crystalline lamellar thickness and temperature, the crystallization and melting lines can be described by two linear dependencies of different slopes and different limiting temperatures at infinite lamellar thickness. Upon subsequent heating, recrystallization lines with different slopes were observed for samples with different lamellar thickness, indicating changes in surface free energy difference between stabilized crystallites and mesomorphic phase. The surface free energy of native crystallites with extended‐chain conformation decreased with increasing lamellar thickness due to a more ordered surface region and less chain ends which changes cooperatively with mesomorphic phase. The surface free energy of stabilized crystallites remained unchanged for all lamellar thickness. Therefore, the recrystallization lines with different slopes are consequences of changes in surface free energy of mesomorphic phase. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part B: Polym. A series of novel organic–inorganic copolymers with polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) in the main chains were synthesized via the copper‐catalyzed Huisgen 1,3‐dipolar cycloaddition polymerization approach. Toward this end, we synthesized 3,13‐azidopropyloctaphenyl double‐decked silsesquioxane (DDSQ). This difunctional POSS macromer was used to copolymerize with α,ω‐dialkynyl‐terminated oligoethylenes with variable number of ethylene units. The organic–inorganic copolymers were obtained with the mass fraction of POSS up to 79%. Gel permeation chromatography showed that the high‐molecular‐weight copolymers were successfully obtained in all the cases. Differential scanning calorimetry showed that the amplitude of glass transitions for these copolymers was very feeble, suggesting that the segmental motions responsible for the glass transitions was highly restricted with DDSQ cages in the main chains. Thermogravimetric analysis showed that the organic–inorganic hybrid copolymers displayed extremely high thermal stability. Contact angle measurements showed that these organic–inorganic copolymers are highly hydrophobic and possessed very low surface energy. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. In this contribution, we reported the synthesis of a series of POSS‐terminated polycyclooctadiene (PCOD) telechelics via ring‐opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) approach. Toward this end, 1,4‐diPOSS‐but‐2‐ene was synthesized via copper‐catalyzed Huisgen cycloaddition reaction (i.e., click chemistry); it was then used as a chain transfer agent (CTA) for the ROMP of cyclooctadiene. The ROMP was carried out with Grubbs second generation catalyst and the POSS‐terminated PCOD telechelics with variable lengths of PCOD were obtained by controlling the molar ratios of CTA to cyclooctadiene. All the POSS‐terminated PCOD telechelics in bulks were microphase‐separated; the morphologies were quite dependent on the lengths of PCOD midchains. The POSS end groups can promote the crystallization of PCOD chains at room temperature, which was in marked contrast to the case of plain PCOD. Compared to the plain PCOD, the POSS‐terminated PCOD telechelics displayed improved thermal stability and surface hydrophobicity. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. In this work, we synthesized a novel organic–inorganic semitelechelic polymer from polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) and poly(acrylate amide) (PAA) via reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization. The organic–inorganic semitelechelic polymers have been characterized by means of nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, thermal gravimetric analysis, and dynamic mechanical thermal analysis. It was found that capping POSS groups to the single ends of PAA chains caused a series of significant changes in the morphologies and thermomechanical properties of the polymer. The organic–inorganic semitelechelics were microphase‐separated; the POSS microdomains were formed via the POSS–POSS interactions. In a selective solvent (e.g., methanol), the organic–inorganic semitelechelics can be self‐assembled into the micelle‐like nanoobjects. Compared to plain PAA, the POSS‐capped PAAs significantly displayed improved surface hydrophobicity as evidenced by the measurements of static contact angles and surface atomic force microscopy. More importantly, the organic–inorganic semitelechelics displayed typical shape memory properties, which was in marked contrast to plain PAA. The shape memory behavior is attributable to the formation of the physically cross‐linked networks from the combination of the POSS–POSS interactions with the intermolecular hydrogen‐bonding interactions in the organic–inorganic semitelechelics. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
